What you need to start a LEGO City & things to think about - LEGO City Building

  • I am happy to answer some questions in the comments, but there were a few more points I didn't mention in the video that I wanted to address quickly:
    Regarding Mils plates: As much as this is a fantastic system, when you are just starting out I don't think it is essential. I only started experimenting when I had a particular need. Also when you are totally new to building a city it may just add a lot of case and daunting decisions, so maybe leave it until you have a particular need.
    Basically, everyone walks their own journey and there is not right or wrong way to go about it. Just start by lining up some buildings and making a little path, the rest will come from there.
    I hope it'll bring you as much joy as it did for me.
    If you do end up building a city please share you photos on instagram, I love to see things.

    really agree with what you said about doing whatever you like with your city!
    i got an old lego alien conquest set (7051) and i was planning to just take it apart.
    but then... i looked at my lego city...
    and now there is an alien invasion in my lego city and there are Minifigures running away and pointing at the aliens in fear.
    i love it so much and it really does show that any lego set can be used in your lego city!

    I actually prefer this city over Bricksie's. I agree with your opinion on limitations. Bricksie's city gives me a headache. I feel like an "anything and everything" approach sort of kills the charm, which is what Jang and Bricksie have. But they are talented and I am imagine for them it's less about the end product and the massive display, but more about the process of building. But yes, love your take on limitations and have too much space to fill.

    I just want to say that your city videos have been really inspirational to me, especially given the limited space you've been working with. I love the fact that your city has many levels, or that in some parts there's an entire side of the shelf dividing the street in two. It just proves your point that any amount of space is good enough and will help getting creative. Like that MOC building you did from the noodle shop, so that it could fit in one of the dead space.
    Thanks for all the advice and bright ideas you've been sharing over the past year!

    I REALLY love the way you’ve set up your city- I don’t have a lot of space, so mine will probably look a bit more like yours- but what I especially loved was seeing the overhead view of all of your details, it looks amazing!
    I think Harry Potter lego sets are somehow super addictive- like, gateway lego sets.. bc I truly only collected the 2010 wave (as an adult, and only bc I am obsessed with HP and at the time I was about to have spine surgery & knew I was going to be bored sitting around & had a stepson who was a lego genius- so I figured I’d have help- which I did.. thankfully!) but.. sometime last year, a friend of mine texted me a picture of the Umbridge’s Encounter set- and I said “I don’t think I have that one- I don’t remember it..” and that is when she told me there was a new wave of HP lego sets out…. Fast forward a year, and I’ve gotten into modulars, city, ninjago, Monkie Kid (I love your Ramen Shop Moc & intend to build it- so THANK YOU in advance for that!).. and pretty much everything in between. So, again, I blame Harry Potter sets for my addiction.. I’ve even purchased Friends sets just bc they were on clearance & figured I could use the pieces. And 4plus sets bc “they have printed pieces”- it goes on and on.. so I get it. Your city is gorgeous- I love that there is now a 3rd level! I can’t wait to see it!

    Tfs your tips and thoughts Johanna! Your city is really unique to well most everything else I’ve seen on YT where people have lots of table tops and space. Love those but like you I don’t have that, so I really appreciate to know about other options. My city plans are super random at this point as I buy sets that mean something to me, not specifically a theme. Like as a child I loved medieval sets and I would love to start with them and get the blacksmith set and some Ninjago dragons, a forest, play with mountains and caves as landscaping, add Winnie the Pooh’s house in there plus HP sets that I have, etc. I love greenery and to work with that will be so relaxing for me. But sadly with current global circumstances, my local Lego store closed their PAB wall as they don’t want people touching the bricks, so sad. So hopefully that opens up again in future. Have a lovely weekend 🤗💖

    • @HighTeaToys
      @HighTeaToys  3 роки тому +1

      Sounds like you could take a theme park like approach where you have different themed sections? So each area of you city has a different theme. The medieval quarter, the Ninjago waterfront, etc. It could be super unique that way! Im sure over time it would come together wonderfully. Our lego stored would fill cups for their customers when we couldn’t touch the bricks. But Bricklink has been my main source of bricks as there you can buy exactly what you need. Especially if space is limited it’s easier to only get what you need then needing to store lots of random parts.

    This arrangement of your city seemed strange to me at first, but after listening to what you were saying about the limitations etc, I find that you have a very rational and healthy approach👍
    and yes, there might be a LEGO master-piece city's out there, but hey! With lack of space or money, the imagination and creativity is all we need!❣

  • @mathewkolakwsk
    @mathewkolakwsk 3 роки тому

    Terrific advice! Start small, be creative with the space you have - limitations are part of the creative process, and above all else, have fun. Doing your own thing is what matters. Don’t feel like you have to copy someone else’s vision. You know what you like - so experiment and let the inspiration just happen as you go. Happy building :-)

    I think you will like the x2 or x3 31131 half baseplate corner building that's going around, looks amazing and would suit your city IMO. I love your city FYI, these nook space style cities are much more interesting and cosy. The mini figs can traverse the levels via a chairlift or pulley system, hehe ☺️
    It would be nice if Lego made half modulars and sold them on their own. They would be cheaper of course, but what I like about them is that you can have more of them with different facades filling in a smaller space, which makes it look much busier, rather than having big buildings taking up all the space with a single facade. That's why I have multi facade modulars in my Lego Street (not city due to space limitations ☺️) like the detectives office, police building, assembly square and then the bookshop half's to break up the street even more. It makes less look more. I'd like to add the Boutique hotel next as well as the x3 31131 building.

    Ooohh! Did you say tree house city?! That would be epic!! Someone needs to do this!! 😄
    Hey are you going convert that shelf pillar into a falling waterfall?!! ..with water flowing from the top shelf (open up a tunnel under the brickbank for it to line up) and ends up flowing (build a little bridge for the red walk path to go over the flow of the water too....) into the water in the City Gardens! 😄
    A vertical gondola that raises and lowers (suspended using twine as cables that lift (no need to build a vertical elevator-like structure that takes up too much space--only the lifting structure at the very top shelf)...maybe even motorized!) minifigures to the different levels would be kinda neat

      @dgray3771 Рік тому

      I think having a train station would be mandatory first imo. But you can do it on the outside, provided you got space. That is usually the issue, people tend to start too far in the back and then realize, crap I put all that stuff in the rear how do I lay the track. If people take to heart not to go to the outside edge of the table too fast they can always add the rails and train later with minimal issues to their city.
