Hi All, thanks for your comments. .. I had a few things going on, my abs module needed resoldering, once done it would consistently return a fault code. But was still faulty and abs not working. .... so then tested the wiring to each sensor, by removing the muti connector from the abs module, removing the connector from each sensor, connecting in a 9 volt radio battery on each sensor connector in turn, and measuring the voltage on each pair of sensor pins in the multi connector. This all checked out ok and i knew the abs sensor wiring was ok. Then I removed each sensor to clean them. The rears were ok but the front sensors were both fouled by what I can describe as bits of rust, like iron filings sat on the face of the sensor. Cleaning this off with the best automotive cleaning wipes known to man (Johnson's baby wipes) solved the problem. ABS has worked perfectly ever since. I guess those sensors are a bit like audio tape heads, once they start to accumulate dirt the signal gets worse until it gets to the point that the ABS ecu no longer is receiving a good enough signal to operate. So my recommendation is to check if your abs is throwing up Cxxxx fault codes, check out your sensor wiring and then clean all your sensors. If still no go, or you have no fault codes, either replace or repair your ecu by re soldering your dry joints as i have shown in the video. Good luck and all the best, Bobby4star

A good video here from DIY Robert explaining how to remove and clean the ABS sensors. Shows the crud that builds up on the sensors. Try this first before looking to the abs module. ua-cam.com/video/s_34WT3AbWc/v-deo.html

cheers Alanrtment, over a year later and mine has been ok since. i only drive my jag occasionally and once or twice the abs light has come on at start up. restarting the engine cleared it. i read on a forum also that low volts on the battery can cause abs light also as the abs module doesn't always boot up properly if battery low. good thing to eliminate with a full charge if having problems. good luck getting your reluctor rings changed? would a good going over with a wire brush help?

You need not remove the entire cover, just drill a 1" hole in the notched corner of the unit with a hole saw, solder the terminals and RTV in a plug.

I have a 1998 jaguar XJR. I need to change the ABS box. I cannot get an E4 star socket onto the two bottom bolt heads on the unit as there is insufficient space between the ABS unit and a bulkhead. Is there a special tool for this or a shorter shank E4 star socket to fit to a bar or is there a combined tool that can be bought? Other people on You Tube have done this job but is an XJR slightly different to other XJ's. Chris

hi chris, a long time since i did this job now. ... but if i remember correctly the whole pump unit is mounted to the chassis on rubberised mountings... can you lift / angle the unit to get your E4 socket on? i guess it might depend on the type of sockets you have, mine were long slim sockets and i only had to bend the pipes a bit away from the chassis to get at those small bolts. good luck!

Odd to have asc fail with no ABS fail warning. Check all wheel sensors etc and clean any rust particles that may be stuck to them. Check for error codes with an odb11 reader. Good luck.

Bobby, I hope you can take this as helpful criticism because It looked like it might be a good vid, but seriously, I couldn't get past all your "Uhm's". Over 30 in the 1st 80 seconds alone? Maybe someone can get through it and count them for you.

Yes i know what you mean. I am certainly no tv presenter, this vid was just a point, shoot and talk sort of thing, i didn't exactly work off a script and i think that comes down in the way i spoke, brain not quite keeping up with mouth....! Probably time i took this vid down... there are no doubt some better ones out there by now. Cheers for the feedback anyway.

Hello Oscar. I was talking about the ABS wheel sensors on the front wheels.... They get bits of rust and muck sticking to them. remove them from your front hubs and just clean the ends of them, it might fix your problem if you're getting intermittent ABS fail. It's a really simple job. Try it first before taking apart your ABS unit! You can also get the ABS wheel sensors failing and going intermittent. They have a fine wire coil inside and if the wire breaks (due to ageing, vibration) they can stop working completely, but also you can get it where they work intermittently. Good luck.
