James Woods loved being Hades so much he's had an open offer to Disney to voice the character for scale for any project they have, including the follow-up TV show. Heck he even came back for a random episode of House of Mouse.😁
He comes back every time Hades appears and is probably the most recurring character of House of Mouse outside the main Mickey cast. Only time he didn’t voice him was one singing line in Mickey’s House of Villains and even then he sang another singing line in the same sequence.
Idk who thought putting gospel music in a movie about Greek myth was a good idea.... but it was an absolutely legendary idea and I really hope they have a good life forever. Also, "That's Phil's boy!" at the end gotta be one of the most cathartic lines in any Disney movie.
Have you ever noticed that, when Hercules cut off the Hydra's head for the first time, the moment Hades said: "Relax, it's only halftime" it is actually the halfway point of the movie ??
3:49 Funny you should mention that, Mickey They made a tv series for Disney Hercules, and in that Zeus was voiced by Corey Burton Years later, Corey Burton would be casted as Zeus for God of War
They used gospel music because Greek theater used to have an omniscient narrator and choir that would introduce scenes and explain things so they combined both of them into what you see in this movie.
It's been years and I'm still dumbfounded at Zeus, the happy faithful family man. Hooo boy. James Woods might be a nutcase, but he's INCREDIBLE as Hades.
the original version of the hydra in the myths had a lot of heads but didn't regenerate them, but in the most famous version of the Hydra, in the Labors of Hercules, it did regrow heads, and if you took off one head, two take it's place. and in the myth Hercules killed it with the help of his nephew, who immediately cauterized the neck each time Hercules cut a head off.
I wear a duster regularly (cliche trench coat) and I quote “wanna buy a sundial?” frequently. I never know if anyone gets the reference, I just remember thinking that was one of the funniest things to me watching this movie as a young one.
Why the hell can't I find a woman like that lol. If a woman this attractive comes up to me in a duster and hits me with the Sundial quote, I'd likely wife her on the spot haha
Meg is one of the few animated Disney heroines that I genuinely liked, because of how relatable she is and actually has a personality! Plus her and Hades are such an iconic duo!
I never realized how much they took from Superman with this movie lol having Hercules come out of the sky , these 2 farmers find him & raise him to be good with all the power he has
Megara was officially the first ever cartoon woman to activate something deep within me while I was still far too young to properly understand what just happened lol. To this day, I'm still significantly attracted to long haired brunettes with husky voices--lord almighty they melt me into a puddle haha
so the thing with the Fates sharing a single eye is taken from another trio of sisters in greek mythology, the Graeae (they also had to share a single tooth). They were daughters of Phorcys, a minor sea god, who was also the father of the three Gorgons.
3:58: "I don't know whose idea this was, but it's a great idea." "To combine this genre of music with -- " "Yeah, like gospel music over a cartoon with Greek mythology. Somehow it hits." So, the song music for "Hercules" were written by Alan Menken, and this film is actually the second time he's worked in this particular musical genre (meaning gospel music). The first was for the film "Little Shop of Horrors: The Director's Cut." * If you like music for "Hercules" it's probably worth your time to react to "Little Shop" too. * It's a long story, but there's a theatrical cut of "Little Shop of Horrors" and a Director's Cut of "Little Shop of Horrors". The Director's cut is a more faithful adaptation of Menken's off-Broadway-play, but they made a theatrical cut to appease a test audience. Editor's Note: Alan Menken collaborated with different lyricists on the songs for "The Little Mermaid", "Beauty and the Beast", "Aladdin", "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", "Home on the Range", "Tangled", "Enchanted" and "Disenchanted".
Oh wow, the nostalgia. Didn't expect this reaction but, I'm not disappointed. I'm so here for more throwback reactions to animated movies, especially by the Normies who haven't seen them.
I was so scared to call out today, but thanks to this reaction it gave me the courage and the strength and the knowledge to know that I too could go the distance. Thanks, Normies!! -from from bed
Man i love this movie. I still own the VHS copy of this movie and fun facts • Hades says "Relax, it's only half-time" right in the middle of the movie. • In the movie, Pain and Panic take the shape of two snakes in order to kill infant Hercules, but he simply grabs and tosses them about. This is another reference to the Herculean myths, where goddess Hera sent two snakes to kill infant Hercules, who simply grabbed and choked them. • While the movie is about Greek myths, Hercules is actually the protagonist's Roman name. Heracles is his Greek name.
The Last Movie of the often called "Disney's Renaissance" Era was actually Tarzan which came out in 1999. Atlantis The Lost Empire came out in 2001 and was part of the "Experimental" Era of animation, tho it wasn't just a Disney thing, the experimental era was also seen in other big animation studios and was started by DreamWorks' First Big Hit which was The Prince of Egypt back in 1998.
This was a fun reaction! Would love to see y'all watch Hunchback. There's a surprising amount of depth and darkness in that one that would make for a fun reaction.
Hercules was my JAM back in the day! Everyone has one of those movies that simply formative for their childhood and personality, and this was it for me. Also a dorky awkward, often misunderstood kid with waaayyyy too much strength for his age, Herc just was an idol to me. In the end I think the message is what solidifies the movie to me. No matter your strength, fame or whatever, a true hero is only born by doing what is right. And baller gospel music. It's mandatory, man.
Watching this made me realize The Norimes gotta react to the more underrated classic animated movies like The Road to El Dorado and The Prince of Egypt
11:02 - This is, by the way, a strange moment: after all, all the heroes, Perseus, Odysseus, Theseus, and Achilles were descendants of gods. Perseus was actually another son of Zeus. And concurrently, the great-grandfather of Hercules himself, through his earthly father. :)
I KNEW there was a reason I vibe with Chris so hard and him sayin he saw Troll in Central Park AND Rockadoodle??? I SEE YOU but have YOU ever seen The Princess and The Goblin? No one I ever talk to remembers that one and I loved it as a kid
10:14 "Haven't you ever had a dream, something you wanted so bad you would do anything?" The stuttering "Have you ever had a dream" kid was trying to quote this line 🤣🤣
Something they don’t say in the movie but I think would be a cool detail would’ve been if Hercules’s adoptive parents mentioned they’ve had 15 years of solid perfect harvests. And it was because Zeus and the gods always made sure they had a perfect harvest so they could always provide the best possible life for Herc. Just something I thought about seeing that giant stack of hay on their wagon when they arrive to the town market.
I know one thing, THE most important casting for the live action Hercules is not Hercules, Meg, or Hades, nah it's the Muses! Let's be real, they make this movie!!!!
I absolutely love it when Micky is on the couch. This is one of my faves. Also I like having an all guy reaction and I'd love an all girl reaction. Hilarious one!
The most beloved strongman in all of fiction. His legend has inspired many great heroes throughout fantasy. Herc himself has been interpreted into Live-action, animated, film, television, video games, comic books, you name it. In the 1990s, Hercules:The Legendary Journeys with Kevin Sorbo and Young Hercules with Ryan Gosling (both tv series/same universe) were the peak of the hero's popularity. But nothing could prepare us for when Disney would take it on. At first, i wasn't interested. But i had to see what they would do with one of the eldest IPs in history and it was indeed a cool feature. One of the best films of The Disney Renaissance. All the trimmings, well deserved in the summer of 1997. The songs are great of course including "Go The Distance" which is never left out of the Top-Tier Disney movie songs. A straight to video sequel called "Zero to Hero" was the prelude to the animated series that ran 2 seasons (65 episodes). Even with this adaptation, the truth of Herc's story still holds up. Finding our place in the world, putting our gifts into the right path and always using our heart as our greatest power. A live-action remake of this is in the works. Don't think they should make one. It's fine just the way it is. If you wanna see a non-kid friendly version of the legend that is a hardcore story of Good and Evil with no holding back, watch HERCULES (2014) with Dwayne Johnson.
I just discovered that, because of my baby brother watching this movie at least 2 times a day for years, I have every word of dialogue in this movie memorized.
My absolute favorite Disney animated movie, everything is great from the voice actors to the story( though the actual story of Hercules is much more messed up). The Muses are the best part of the movie and James Woods is amazing as Hades!
If they have to keep ONE thing whenever they remake Hercules into live action is the muses singing gospel about Greek mythology lore Also, fun fact: in Latin America, the actor who voiced Hercules was Ricky Martin
With regards to the upcoming live action Hercules movie, Ariana Grande did a cover of the song "no way i'm in love", a while ago, and it was pretty damn good if you ask me. You can find it here on youtube.
I absolutely NEED you guys to all watch Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame together soon. Amazing music, independent heroine, and probably the best dark villain. Beautiful overall.
spidey hasn't seen the little mermaid!? please add to the list, it's my all time fav disney movie! also one of the ones where every song is a recognizable classic. part of your world, under the sea, poor unfortunate souls, kiss the girl...
As per usual, Chris is a man of taste, with the Don Bluth shout out 😂 Those movies were my childhood favs . I make reference to them all the time and my high school students never have a clue what I’m taking about

I’m pretty sure there was an original Heracles myth about Titans assault on Olympus. They were invincible, so basically only Herc did anything of value. IIRC he used Hydra flavored poisoned arrows to paralyze titans, then dragged them one by one to one location where they could be killed.
Holy throwback!! When's the last time you watched this?
4 months ago......plez react to Hercules the disney animated series.....its fun yet non canon

Also every Kingdom Hearts game with Hades in it. Which is like, six of them
I would have James Woods play a less evil Hades and just a tired working dad that has to deal with his family nonsense
I HIGHLY doubt James Woods would do anything with Disney at this point.
Fun fact, this Hades is pretty much how C3PO was originally written, before the actor decided to make him a stuffy butler.
Idk who thought putting gospel music in a movie about Greek myth was a good idea.... but it was an absolutely legendary idea and I really hope they have a good life forever.

It was the most inspired thing. I don’t even like most gospel (even as a kid who grew up with it) but the music in this movie has always been amazing.
Yes! Black women singing soul/gospel to be the muses was inspired.
The Gospel music makes me think of the Chorus they had in most Greek plays. Just a group of singers/chanters who kinda announce things
“That’s Phil’s boy” makes me bawl. Every. Single. Time.
Have you ever noticed that, when Hercules cut off the Hydra's head for the first time, the moment Hades said: "Relax, it's only halftime" it is actually the halfway point of the movie ??
Thats Crazy!
"Gospel music with Greek mythology totally slaps!'' Please tell that to Nostalgia Critic.
“IT LOOKS LIKE VEGAS, WHY DOES IT LOOK LIKE VEGAS?!”
Who cares about nostalgia critic? He's irrelevant.
Nostalgia Critic fell off a looong time ago.

Micky "Cut off his head!"
Chris eyes rolls. 🤣
3:49 Funny you should mention that, Mickey
They made a tv series for Disney Hercules, and in that Zeus was voiced by Corey Burton
Years later, Corey Burton would be casted as Zeus for God of War
The voice actor for Zeus in the movie also voiced Hephaestus in god of war 3
I always loved this connection
Loved that series. Shame it didn't last all that long.
Fun Fact: In the Latin Spanish Dub of this movie the singer Ricky Martin gives voice to Adult Hercules.
5:36 “omg….these bitches” lmaoo this is exactly how I felt when I rewatched this recently after 20 years 😂
