Cold Steel (GSM Outdoors) NEEDS to offer new Recon's in medium, large and Extra Large blade versions like The Cold Steel of old and add low profile, deep carry pocket clips.
I miss when big Pappa Bear Lynn Thompson sat down and showed us his new 20-foot sword he was concealing in his boot :( now we got fancy man showing us fancy box cutters that are indistinguishable from every other brand.
I miss the old Cold Steel DVDs where Lynn would cut pigs in half with increasingly ridiculous swords, all while wearing a cutoff hoodie and sweat shorts. It ruled. Back in the days before youtube, watching the cold steel DVD and smoking a joint was good for hours of entertainment.
I get that, tho they do come out w some cool big folders too. I like that new mayhem, I tend to go for unique blades as well. I think the market for those just arent as big. Lynn is one of a kind, can't fault CS for not replacing him.
The good thing about companies pricing themselves out of the reach of their original customer base is that it opens the door to new companies coming into the marketplace that serve customer bases abandoned by manufacturers that forgotten them !
Finally they bring back the old classics. Really looking forward to these old school knives. And the original titanium linerlock. Thats pretty cool stuff👍. Also the guy with the business dress for the presentation. Well done.
Web prices and msrp from what I've bought lately have been very different. How reasonable it all is, that's up to each consumer obviously. Compared to the extensive use of aus 8 two decades ago, my personal opinion is that Cold Steel has been more recently mopping the floor with most of the American titans in most ways you could measure the difference. Inflation and corresponding intercontinental havoc is also a harsh effect at play. I would certainly give them credit for working so closely with Lynn to ensure their competence and customer confidence and appreciation.
@@RexApplegateWhile true, there is some “ Price gouging” going on with GSM too. An example the 4 Max. They took a USA made (later Italian made), 20CV blade steel, huge stop pin and I believe pivot too, knife , and GSM made it on the Scout frame in Taiwan thus reducing the stop and possibly the pivot, went with cheaper S35VN, god awful Rambo wannabe scales (in my opinion) …to adjust for inflation and keep the cost down to pass to the consumer? No! They raised the price $125 putting the knife in Sabenza territory! Do they think we are that blind and stupid? Apparently so because a certain UA-camr shilled for them on that very product! Some prices have come down and more in line but I betting this is because product sat on shelves. Your option may vary.
@@palerider7171 That's not a model I follow, so I appreciate the good reference info. The most dedicated of enthusiasts holding manufacturers to account on their favorite models is a beautiful thing.
Cold Steel used to be a brand loaded with affordable hard use working knives. A few years ago the recon 1 was under $100. All of their products are now completely out of the blue collar worker’s price range. The price of their products has doubled within the span of 10 years. Spyderco has gotten ridiculous too. The majority of their products are hundreds of dollars. These companies completely abandoned their original customer base. Really sucks to see your favorite brands completely give in to greed.
Nah, cold steels knives are still very affordable for what they are. The recon 1 s35vn is like $129... The ad10 is $140-$149 the ad15 is about the same so stop it. With prices the way they are now a days cold steel is very reasonable.
Any knife could be made with alternate blade steels and materials and be at any price point. Just like how a F-150 costs Ford $15,000 or less to make; anything sold for more makes them much more. That's how they are playing the knife market. A $250 knife does not have $250 worth of materials.
I think the original Cold Steels in the 1980's were over $100... so about $400 inflation-adjusted. You can still find the Recon 1 under $100 when it's on sale... and the Code 4 in S35VN for $60 something.
That Cold Steel Recon M1 folder with 4" Black Stonewashed MagnaCut blade, Tri-Ad lock and Black G-10 looks great. Is it made by Fox Knives of Maniago, Italy?
The hold out 2 4" was just better in every way that counts in my opinion. I am actually disappointed that they release a knife kind of similar but 1) less durable 2) less usable for I guess better looks for some and more satisfying fidgety mechanics. Does not feel like cold steel to me. Bring back the hold out 2 with magnacut, that blade would really shine with this steel, not like the mini EDCs that would never take a beating anyway
kinda wish they had just brought back the holdout 4" in s35vn like the other two, would have still been a marketable upgrade that would be more affordable than 500 dollars
Love the Caledonian. Super glad to hear Cold Steel is making the Recon 1 with MagnaCut. My wants from Cold Steel are… A Cold Steel automatic Voyager XL’s with a high end steel.
Compared to the old days of Aus 8 voyagers, I'd call this a golden era. Personally, if I had a large Luzon with a triad lock in aus 10 or better I'd have a no question edc for life.
CS bests BM on their own turf by simply copy&pasting on this round I consider. and much thanks for DCA actually asked and confirmed the new AA was running on bushings, I've seen bladehq vids talks 10+ minutes around the BM necron and new AA, and None of them mentions anything about pivot constructions. it's like the first or second most important thing bali buyers today would like to know about.
Aside from the price he weird for the Caledonian edge, that coated blade just makes me sad. It seems like an awful lot of knife companies have designed or in this case reintroduced really nice knives and then decided they need to have coated blades for no reason. This is a really annoying trend.
Recon 1 in Magnacut, great! But why the coating? Bring it in satin finish. Other than that, bring back the Rajah *1* with alu frame and micarta like scales, but in CPM-3V! That would be bonkers! The original Spectre looked so good like many of CS' collection of that era, but why was the blade dull?
The Ti Lite 4 inch with zytel handel was my top 3 favorite folder i ever owned, so beautiful, love the liner lock, and i love the oldschool italian switchblade look.
I - like many others - was worried about what was going to happen to CS when GSM outdoors bought them, but I gotta say, they have been knocking it out of the park!
Wow this is exciting news after some mostly so-so blades coming outta cold steel for the past several years (basically everything after the AD series). I've been trying to get a Caledonian edge for like 5 years, but they rarely pop up online. I bought a Hatamoto new in box years ago, and it's still one of my favs. Not big on carbon fiber though 😒
@KnifeCenter: at [2:24] you show a drop-point knife that I really liked, but I couldn't find it on your page. Please tell us more about it and where I can order it. Thank you.
If cold steel is going to be bringing back previously released knives, please bring back the 1993-1994 Ultralock knives. Just make it a 3 1/2" blade knife with steel liners with washers or bearings. Also please make sure the blades are centered .
they are not easy to maintain IMHO, they got more parts than most crossbar knives on the market today. but if land&sea rescue was brought back with triad and voyager style construction, SOLD!
I like the fact the are bringing back the 60series. The lack of new offerings is a little disappointing but ok. Nothing like yesteryear when I used to wait with bated breath and scoured the interwebs for any news on “this year’s new release”. Heck thy haven’t even updated their “new product” section. The spokesman is a vast improvement over last year interview with “Stickman” not even understanding his own product lines and history. Good job CS.
The balisong has classic BM-42 vibes about it. I predict that Cold Steel will sell loads of them. I would prefer a spring latch though. The best latch was on the BM-51 because it springs open from closed, stays out of the way whilst flipping, and stays locked when engaged with the blade deployed.
I wish they'd standardize their offerings. I have a 6” hold out which is ok, but I want the 4”. Conversely, I have 4” counter point (which I do like ), but would also prefer in 6”. While we're at it😜 how about some different blade options for Frenzy, an XL Bush Ranger…and still waiting / hoping for 5 max scout.
Excited for the arc angel. Seems like the pocket clip isn’t returning and wondering if different blade shapes will be available as well. Bushings were never on the original angel just good old stainless steel washers
Does this mean Master Tanto, Outdoorsman in Magnacut? Maybe at least 3V for the outdoorsman. Awesome to see still! The recon 1 in magnacut is gonna be killer
The caledonian seems linke a less robust more fancy version of the hold out 2. I do not dig it, please bring back the (perfect in every way i find) hold out 2 4" with magnacut. Cannot imagine a better knife than that.
You need to find out what HRC they will be running that Magnacut recon 1 at. I can guarantee there’s going to be a lot of scrutiny on that blade when it comes out and people are going to test it. Knowing knives made in Italy before have had subpar heat treats, people will want to know. I think back to the lion steel controversy several years ago where some of their m390 slip joints were testing at 55 HRC.
What? No stabbing through car hoods? This more upscale side of Cold Steel is strange. Not necessarily bad, though. At least they pulled out the Espada!
My Luzon XL gets carried a lot. I shelled out a little over $40 for it several years ago. I would hate to think what the price of it would be with a Magnacut blade. If it wasn't just stupid expensive, I would buy one.
I have had various Cold Steel knives throughout the years. The 90’s models were the best and reasonably priced. The ones built after that are less than stellar. Had a Recon that sits in a drawer. Junk. Had an SRK from about 91. Great knife in carbon 5.
Remake the s35vn stockmans with a pocket clip and then make a cold steel version of the benchmade outlast with a tanto serrated a then a plain blade, no belt cutter with the tirade lock
I like the updates but what am I dropping all that money on a frigging liner lock for? Civivi and many others make extremely nice knives with liner locks for half the price or often even less...
Bring back the mini recon 1 in g10, sv35vn with no coating. Make an espada the size of a recon 1 in g10 with s35vn. Bring back the hold out with the same recipe. Boom. Instant cash flow.

I hope cold steel brings back the Scimitar folder. I had mine for 10 years until i lost it. Such a unique design
Mine was stolen so yeah I want them back in production too!
Love/miss my Scimitar.
Miss the L.Thompson/A.Demko team along with the parking lot sale.
Probably not as they already brought back the Talwar and that's very similar to the scimitar. I agree about how awesome it is too.

Gotta love how the Cold Steel booth is in a quiet darkened room isolated from all the other areas of the show.
