Excellent professionally made review. No crazyman jumping around screaming at you & insulting your intelligence. Just straightforward & factual. A joy to watch.
The Recon is a beast and looks to be very capable. I own the OSS with Kraton handle for home defense. I saw the Cold Steel video where the guide killed the Cape buffalo. I was sold on it!
I have the Recon Tanto, from the 80's, made from Carbon V steel. Love the knife. Carried it when ever I went hiking in Yellowstone, the three summers I worked up there.
I think you missed one. The drop forged bowie is an excellent combat knife. The balance makes it so nimble that you'd swear it was half the weight. The steel doesn't hold an edge the greatest, but makes up for it in extreme toughness! I don't think it's the best wood chopper, but it's outstanding at butchering. 10" of blade is pretty nice too
I only do knives that I can have in hand… It always seems disingenuous. I’ve never liked Knife channels that do reviews on knives based just on what they see on a website. If I don’t have one to judge then I don’t consider it
I have 3 CS SRK knives in San Mai, AUS8A, and CPM3V. Great knives, also have the OSS, the Marauder and just got the Recon Scout in CPM3V as well, such a beast. Love em all. I'm definitely a fan of Cold Steel.
I like all of those but the last one is probably my favorite. I love all my Cold Steel knives, but their more recent Securex sheaths have glass fiber in the plastic and when the edge touches the inside of the sheath it immediately dulls the blade. CRKT fixed blade knives have had fiber in their sheaths for years. Glock field knives and Morakniv knives do not have glass fiber in their sheaths. Thanks for showing us these!
Just found your channel. Yep, I like ColdSteel. The R1 it looks like was meant to be fought with like a backwards Bowie. Killer blades&killer vid brother!!
I have the Trailmaster and was very happy with its Beautiful Knife..but I Accidentally Hit the Tip into Cement Hard and I Bent the Tip I tried to fix it but the tips had a big Bend it...I got a Sharp Tip but I can see were I Fixed it so it's ruined some people can't tell but I could see it easily
SRK, search and rescue knife. Black bear classic is lethal! The recon scout is one of my favourite knives. The R1 is great, but the sheath let's it down, why did they put the retention strap on the edge of the blade? Should be on the spine side! The 3v version of the recon scout is very expensive in the UK. The handle is not coffin shaped, it is a Japanese style of handle. And brilliant!
The Randall #1 knockoff was my favorite there . Number 1’s sell for 600. ish all day at gun shows . Owned both a #1 and 14 for decades. Being near Orlando it’s my home Team.
Great selection. However, the best cold steel blade if we are talking fighting knives. Not survival but strictly fighting. The Taipan is the best hands down. In my opinion anyway.
I have a brand new *Recon Tanto®* (Carbon V) and a *Recon Tanto* (SK5) that's great. Have used neither, but you should see there workmanship on the latter. The ground edges are perfect. Hephaestus, himself, could not have made it better, and it feels superb in the hand. I don't have a Randall, but I do have two *SOG Agency®* knives with the most beautiful finishes a man could desire! I can't bring myself to use either as they, too, are out of production. As for the sub-hilt knife, you're lucky to have yours. I have a couple of *Cold Steel OSS* knives and look, people can scream all they want about AUS8A steel, but the OSS is not an everyday EDC. And as someone who loves and uses CTS-XHP for my EDC, there ain't nuthin’ wrong with AUS8A knives. Back in the day, before all the powdered knife steels were the rage, people carried and used AUS8A all the time and didn't complain at all except that it rusted if it wasn't cared for. And no one said, “my damn knife needs to be sharpened all the time!” (They didn't even say that about their Buck 420HC knives which, I think, are still in production and which have “medium” edge retention. Some of these Buck Hunter® knives have even killed black bears.) The *Recon Scout®* is a knife I'd love to have, but I don't like Kraton rubber grips on a knife that expensive.
I have a vg1 san mai trailmaster and I won't go out to the bush without it. Slices, chops, holds an edge to. Ur vids are right on guy, keep it up and I'm hoping that you will review some puma knives. 👏🇨🇦
Lynn Thompson is a bit of a carnival barker who delivers multiple solid products. He invented the American tango and made the kukri tactical in the 90s.
At this point I can’t afford to buy any more knives for this channel… Things that come in get reviewed. I cannot purchase anything I have been forbidden
They’re great… But I think these are better that’s why I let everyone know that this channel is based on my opinions. I like all three of the knives you mentioned. But they’re just not ones I think are the top tier
Both viewpoints are fair, but context is needed. A pure bred fighting knife choice will depend on fighting style and circumstances, and for that matter so will a combat and utility knife hybrid. I don't own any you guys listed besides a Tai Pan, but my favorite go anywhere do anything fixed knife is the 60's buck 122/124, not very different from the video choices, and if I had to pick a fixed blade knife to take to confront violence it'd be the Tai Pan. And I EDC a 5.5 tanto for trades work. All great knives but fundamentally feature very different schools of thought by the discerning users who actually field them.
The Loveless Style Black Bear is not a "drop point" it's a clip point. The balance on this copy is all wrong and too handle-heavy because Loveless tapered his tangs and that left just enough weight forward to improve momentum in the cut. The Black Bear is also "sharpened" to use the term loosely, inconsistently at anywhere from 20 dps in the body of the knife to nearly 30 dps near the point. This makes it a nightmare to actually sharpen.
Because it was definitely a better Steel… Aus8 is not a very good steel even though cold steel does a great heat treat on it, it’s no where near as good as the carbon v was
@@CrazySharp » Yeah, but the present steel is SK-5, not AUS8A, and the AUS8A I have in my Rajah II has done very well in chopping and cutting. I have models in AUS8A and 10A and both have performed admirably. But I also have two Recon Tantos, one with Carbon V and one in SR-K, both unused. Are they about the same? I'm told not to use the former because it's a collector's item. What do you think?
My preference is based on edge retention I tried many knives Buck Kershaw and even custom knives but the carbon V cold steel lasted 3-4 X longer when processing elk and deer I had a master hunter and a fish filet knife 9”

My OSS arrived today and boy was it a pleasure to hold in my hand. It came super sharp all the way around and with a light strop, its now a razor!
The Recon is a beast and looks to be very capable. I own the OSS with Kraton handle for home defense. I saw the Cold Steel video where the guide killed the Cape buffalo. I was sold on it!

The Black Bear Classic and 3v Recon Scout are on sale rn at midwayusa, only $112 and $150 respectively! I had to get both
I have had a San Mai Trailmaster for the last 20 years, and it has held up incredibly well.
Hey! Good video! I actually have that OSS, it’s a very good knife
Awesome Collection of Fixed Blades! :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)
As a long-time Cold Steel fan I found this vid very informative!
I own the R1 and absolutely love it's steel, construction, and look.
Thanks, Mike.
Awesome review of some great knives. I'd also add the Cold Steel Peace Keeper and Cold Steel Tai Pan to the combat list.

The only thing on earth that can dull a cold steel blade is the the securex sheath.
For me Master Tanto is hell of a knife, so as Recon Tanto, i think they are best!
Recon Scout San Mai is my all time favourite, because I prefer convex grind.
I like all of those but the last one is probably my favorite. Thank You , Great Video ! Have a Blessed Day !
Will never part with my Recon Scout in Carbon V. Still love it after 30 years.

Carbon v steel was made by Camillus I think.. wish I'd bought more when they were 15-50$

Tanto not tango. Freaking iPhone autocorrect.
The Gurkhas made the Kukri tactical over 100 -years ago not Lynn Thompson

You got the good one and Three of them I also have. 😊
Which ones?
That Recon Scout deserves a better handle material than kraton imo.
Why did CS discontinue the R1 Military Classic? It's a beautiful knife!!!
I think their license agreement expired
3V Trailmaster is king 😎
Investigate the backcut my dude.
I also love my recon scout
I wish so bad we could get the R1 still 😭
You left out the Recon Tanto which I believe to be the best value for the money out there 😉

Nah, the Carbon V Trailmaster was the best knife CS ever made.
No way the sk5 trailmaster
