And the answer is that they don’t and they aren’t, they become violent when we resist. Tess has no reason to fight back against that infected, so the infected had no reason to be violent to her. They don’t bite us to eat us, they bite us to spread their fungus from their mouth through our bodies. It wasn’t a kiss, it was simply the proper natural way to infect and turn her.

Tess actually said to Joel that she never asked him to felt how she felt implying that Joel doesnt even allow himself to get attached to even the most important person in his life, it shows the weight that his and Ellies relationship holds as it grows and gets stronger like we saw and the game and hopefully will see in the tv show.
no, if tess had pushed that infected away, she wouldn't have been able to set fire to the building. all of them would have swarmed and tore her apart, she wouldn't have had those vital few seconds to light up the lighter. she stood there while the infected did that so that they wouldn't swarm her, in hopes the lighter would spark up and she could give joel/ellie time to get out...
I thought the "save who you can save" line was a callback to Joel's daughter. Tess probably knows about his past and potentially guilt having been unable to save her 20 years ago.
I thought it was about Tess herself too. Since Joel can't do anything for Tess now that she has already been bitten, she says this to remind him that Ellie and the possibility of a vaccine are still there. That was my interpretation anyways.
That's exactly right. In the HBO podcast, they say that it's Tess basically saying, "Stop trying to save your daughter, she's already dad. Save this girl."
@@pegusus12346 like to think its a bit of both like , you can't save me, an you can't save Sarah, stop trying to save people you can't save an focus on those you can. Save Ellie an you might be able to save others.
15:10 (About what Aaron says). Aaron is thinking about the infection like Zombies from other media. from what I understand, if you die at all, you cannot be infected. The fungus can still grow on your dead body, but you will still just be dead, it doesn't magically reanimate you after death like a zombie. The fungus acts as a parasite, so if it takes over a host and their mind, that host needs to be alive. Its just a parasitic relationship, with the goal of the fungus trying to reproduce using the human, controlling their mind and actions to spread the fungus to other humans by any means, and on and on it goes. Am I correct?
yea you see this demonstrated in the opening when the mycologist does the autopsy of the female corpse and finds the tendrils in her throat still alive and moving over a day after her death
oh i just love watching my favourite reactors reacting to the opening scene for this episode! christine hakim and yayu unru are veterans, seniors, acting coaches, and mentors for indonesian actors. they’ve done so much for indonesian cinema and we couldn’t help but to feel so happy for them and proud to see them star in a huge project like this! and obviously they did a great job!!
@@asianfries08 i just remembered that christine hakim was in eat, pray, love (2010) with julia roberts, and she had also done many international projects before. but it’s just so cool seeing her in a project that the whole world is talking about! queen!
I’m probably in the minority but for me it’s the extra backstory that’s really the cherry on top of an already amazing script, cast, acting that’s impeccable, sound design that’s ASMR porn, and the cinematography. The pre-infection timeline showing things like Sarah, the scientist we meet this episode, from other previews and such it looks like we are getting some Bill backstory. It’s gonna be great
From what I understood from the games, the cordycepts need a living body in order to turn and control them. So if you get bit and bleed out I don't think you'd turn since it's more like puppeting people instead of reanimating the dead
There are so many cool nods to the game with Ellie and Joel hiding behind those counters, Joel giving Tess the boost. They really give you that feeling of playing the game. I was half expecting one of the clickers to look right at Ellie but not attack her because Joel was around the corner and couldn't be seen.
Even though I played the game and knew how it would go down I was somehow even MORE terrified in the museum scene than when I played the game! The fact that Neil Druckman himself directed this episode makes it even more perfect. And from the cold open showing how cordyceps originated in Jakarta it proves the Bread Theory was right. Which makes rewatching the pilot even MORE tense because you see how lucky Joel, Tommy and Sarah were that they didn’t get infected from eating any flour based foods. As for Tess’ ending, I think it was actually done better than the game. The scene of the mycelium (the fungal threads) going into her mouth was incredibly disgusting but the look in her eye when it happened showed that even though she was about to turn into one of them she managed used that iron will of hers to force herself through those last seconds before turning to burn them all. Stand and applaud for Anna Torv everyone!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Fun Fact: So Neil Druckman and Craig Mazin did more research on fungus and found out that if spores were as much of a threat as they are in the game that humanity would be completely wiped out. So they changed it to another scary fact about fungus which is that there are some species that grow so big that they can cover entire acres of rainforest in Brazil. So they added that instead of spores.
I love that change so much from spores to tendrils. And honestly it's terrifying thinking about being able to accidentally trigger a bunch of infected a mile away. Also the tendrils in the mouth absolutely disturb me every scene I think about how their airways are clogged and how they're still technically alive in there and it makes me so grossed out. Well done
Yeah, at first I wasn't convinced with the change but after watching this episode I actually really really love it. It's innovative and terrifying. I'm looking forward to see how they play with the new concept.
@@TheMimo2001 Makes me wonder how they'll handle the Bloater, considering one of its defining features was to throw a ball of exploding spores to try and infect anyone that gets caught. With the removal of spores so far, it also makes the whole Ellie doesn't need a gas mask in heavy spore areas. One of the defining moments in the game was Joel really accepting her immunity due to her going through without a gas mask.
Anna Torv was amazing. That brief moment when Joel and Ellie run and she is alone, knowing what is about to happen...subtle and superb acting. Sad we don't get more of her (one can hope for flashbacks though!)
Tess death scene was completely alterated in comparison to games....in game she died in struggle...barely killing one or two in her own demise.....meanwhile in series she got the hero death(sacrificing herself and kiling dozens of infected for Ellie)
i love how sometimes they just give us an over-the-shoulder shot following joel plus i love how they always get joel to be the one who opens doors and moves cabnets like in the game lmao
Joel’s mentioning of Infected “walking around for 20 years” is a nod to the Rat King variant from Part 2, where a bloater, stalker and clicker fused into one in the basement of the Seattle Hospital
Not really. If it was something Joel hasn't seen yet than it's probably a referance to Bloaters. But clickers are perfectly capable of living for decades.
Bella Ramsey is absolutely perfect as Ellie. I read that the producers or whomever didn’t let Bella or Pedro read or look into anything about the game (if true) they killed these roles already. (If not true) they’re still killing the roles. 🔥
They must have a very detailed script but also helps the creators of the game are working on this bc alot of the game players say they do certain scenes exactly like the games.
I love how even if you're not that familiar with the game, just the atmosphere of it all, and just seeing the two clickers is enough to put shivers down your spine. How even though there were just two of them, it still took a while for the characters to put them down. Really shows how unrelenting and hard it is to kill these things. Also, I really love the addition of Ellie getting bitten again, because I feel like that definitely reinforces the idea of her being immune in Joel's head. At first, Joel was very adamant that Ellie would turn eventually, but seeing Tess's bite mark, compared to Ellie's fresh one, was definitely the push that Joel needed to continue on and find the Fireflies.
The intros to the first two episodes have been AMAZING with the exposition and how interesting and just scary it is. These weren't in the game but I'm glad because it adds more to the unknown and I hope every episode starts with an intro like that. I always found ground zero, patient zero, where it all started, early interaction, and the cure the most interesting part of apocalypse media. Super unsettling too coming from a scientist and professor to just say "Bomb" because that disease as they know it is uncurable after all the research that has been done to it. Knowing that it can now infect humans, she realizes they already lost
Agreed. Personally, i think the intros have been the scariest part of the series so far, just because of how the atmosphere feels in them. Great direction by the writers and showrunners.
@@mikkelholst96 Agreed definitely scarier than the show itself though I played the game so that might be because I already know what's coming in the show but not in the parts that weren't in the game. Either way it's really good
So terrifying of a thought that Tess' brain was being hijacked by the fungus and literally going through a drug trip focused on 'Spread the infection' that probably felt a LOT stronger than any sexual reproduction or survival urge
Eugh god, that's a deeply upsetting way to describe it and I love that. Almost makes me want a novelization so we can see an infection playing out from a first-person POV.
@@aClownBaby- - yea i wanna know if the newly infected are still alive inside their bodies, aware of everything that's happening but unable to control themselves - i can't imagine a more horrific fate
@@joeg6478 Same, though if it's anything similar to real cordycepts fungi, it would keep the host alive and "conscious" up until the moment the fungus is ready to begin fruiting, which, disturbingly, would suggest that every infected individual (including clickers) are still somewhat conscious (albeit blind for the clickers) up until they either are killed or are fully encompassed like the dead sessile infected that Tess and Joel encountered on their way to Marlene underground.
I don't know if you noticed this detail, but in the first episode Jakarta is mentioned at the beginning, when Joel, Sarah and Tommy are talking at breakfast. It's a very interesting detail.
This was shot in my city, Calgary, it was so cool because i would pass filming locations that they had set dressed on my way to and from work, or even see them filming. So many people i know were extras and even one person who is one of the Editors. Everyone really put their heart into it and you can tell.
A great episode all round, but the highlight by far for me is the clickers. They absolutely killed it, perfect translation to live action. They were just as terrifying and freaky as in the games, looking forward to seeing more of them.
I loved the opening backstory scenes. I guess I've seen so many zombie shows that kick off after the zombies have over run the world. I find seeing the actual fall of society even scarier.
LOVE the second renaissance this fantastic game is having! Apparently sales have gone up 200% and as a fan of both games I couldn’t be happier for more people to experience this amazing story
The clickers look and sound absolutely amazing. It feels so much like the game. I love all the little detail changes they're making it just feels natural. I can't believe how good of a job they've done visually, and the cast is doing amazing. The origin stories have been great. I'm still wondering if the kid from the 1st episode with the orange shirt in the Nike's that wandered into the QZ was like Ellie. I'm almost wondering if there's been a number of kids like her, but because they come up as being infected by the scanners they get took out. Can't see that little boy making it all the way there unless he was immune. They saw the wound on his knee and just assumed he was bitten and about to change.
All the little bonus scenes at the start really feel like how the BOOK of World War Z was, basically a collection of interviews from people at various stages of the outbreak. I hope it continues and we get to see some more very specific POVs.
I'm wondering how much of what we are getting to see now was originally written up by Neil but was ultimately scrapped because of the limitations of the ps3. Mega zombie swarms, the inclusion of the moving tentacle type things, and the kiss scene... All feel like stuff that was probably part of the original creative outburst.
All I can say is I can't wait to see Bill!!!! The beauty with this series is that we'll actually get to flesh out the character of Frank, and it's going to be epic!!!! The Clickers looked AWESOME, I am so stoked for everything that comes after!!!! 🍄 🍄 🍄 🍄
I really like how smart, and aware of danger the doctors/military/scientists are, but there is just nothing that can be done, even doing everything right couldnt stop it. Where in other zombie shows/video games, it only got bad because everyone mishandles/underestimated the situation. The cordyceps infection is truly terrifying.
I liked the intro to the first two episodes. I’m thinking we could get flashbacks of Joel & Tommy moving from Texas to Boston, who Ellie’s parents were/are and what else has happened since it started.
Never played the game (never owned a console), but have heard of it through generally being a fan of games and gaming. Was very keen to check this series out and it's not disappointed at all.
I've never played or even watch the playthrough. I really love this series. For someone who do not enjoy watching zombie movie or the likes but I really enjoy this show. Cannot wait for episode 3.
Joel and Sarah dodge eating grains multiple times right before the outbreak! Joel forgets the pancake mix, they pass on the biscuits (which infects their neighbor), Sarah leaves before eating the cookies and Joel forgets the cake. They were so lucky to miss the infection and I think that's so cool.
26:00 I think the idea is that like Joel said some only survive for a month or so because once the fungus has spread all it can spread without interacting with other humans the process is complete. Like the one they found in the tunnel before meeting Elle, it had turned and didn’t have the opportunity to spread to other people so you can see the fungus spread all across the wall
I love how the clips at the start of these episodes kind of pertains to what we will see in the actual episode. Like ep 1 was introducing the fungus and then in the episode was the outbreak. Ep 2 was talking about the bombing of the cities and we see the bomb holes and it being mentioned throughout the episode.
I find it so funny y’all discussed the meaning of him saying they’re “cooked”. That’s a popular phrase in the south for being unable to continue, or having hit your limit. Love to see Joel’s Texan roots lol
Adoranymph Lupin is a weird backwards version of Nymphadora Lupin, a character from Harry Potter. Her last name is initially Tonks but she marries Remus Lupin.
I can’t believe how well they recreated the feeling of the combat with clickers. I felt the exact same way I did during the game and used the exact strategies they did.
They filmed a ton of this in Calgary, a lot of this episode is here as I can recognize a lot of the places. It was fun watching them do all of the filming here and seeing it changed so much in the show. The traffic problems were insane at times though.
I love that they're adding these scenes from before the outbreak. It adds even more depth and makes the world that more terrifyingly real. Great reaction, guys!
I played the game I think in 2015. So I don't really remember all too much about the actual story and stuff. This series makes me wanna play again and get into it properly
So far, the changes made have been great. Joel is more humanized, mentally and physically (he's not quite as brawly and big as in the game, and the wear and tear of age is pointed out by Tess' comment on their knees), having Ellie being bit again to reaffirm her immunity as the spores originally served that purpose. We even get to see the infected preferred and most logical way of spreading the fungus (which was incredibly disturbing might I add). I also really love the small scene in the hotel where Ellie goes kinda of the "track" and starts joking and talking with herself. It was nice to see, as I find those small exchanges in the game to be some of the most rewarding and fun parts of the experience.
Hey guys at the end of this episode everything that the person who left a comment at 33:40 about what Neil said there was bts footage of Neil Druckman, the cast ,and crew going over and showing how they designed the clickers and how they came up with the changes behind the spores and tendrils the set design and and more things. Im saying this because it could become a regular thing and as a fan of the game and the show it was very interesting. You should definitely watch it. Great video as always boys. Wishing Rick health as well.
The biggest compliment I can give the show so far is that I have absolutely no issues or complaints about the first two episodes. I haven’t played the games but am aware of their cultural relevance and am amazed by every single aspect of this show from the acting, the cinematography, the art direction and the music it’s all phenomenal
If you listen to the podcast Neil mentioned wanting to shoot across the globe to show the outbreak but didn’t have enough budget. Maybe season 2.. Also sucks the editor cut out Eric and Calvin realizing the subtle hints of Tess being infected in the show vs how the game handles it in the full length. Was a good moment.
I honestly prefer not knowing what happened to people outside the US, because if you were Joel/Ellie, you wouldn’t know how Jakarta was handling the outbreak either
The only thing missing from this episode was Joel throwing a brick or bottle to distract the clickers yeah, he push that one bust over but we wanna see Bricks and bottles
The last scene with Tess would make more sense if we could see the fungus forcing her to stand still or controlling her. That whole scene was a little weird, but the rest of the episode was stellar.
Wheat I like about the tendrils is that it gives a logical reason for swarms to exist. Swarms of enemies is such a video game to exist but logically don’t work in real life. Like if runners are newer infected, why would 30+ swarms exist when people tend to travel in small groups. It’s just a smart way to explain the waves of enemies that we see in video games
The thing with the tunnels of fungus that can awake swarms of infected anywhere is such a cool mechanic that could totally be used in the game. If they ever make a part III, I hope they use it!
I played a little bit of the game so I'm somewhat familiar but my wife had no idea that this was based on a game and she's really into it. She saw the little girl silhouette at the beginning and thought it was his daughter. She was so surprised when she died.
I just want to show appreciation for this channel, since both Calvin and Rick are currently playing my favorite games of all time, and both of them seem to be enjoying it. I love this crew and I love this channel!
On the podcast for the second episode, Mazin and Druckmann mentioned an alternative Cold Open to episode two which was a flashback to Tess's backstory. It would've revealed that she had a husband and son who were infected during the outbreak. She would've killed her husband but locked her son in the basement when she couldn't bring herself to kill him. This was scrapped before filming in favour of the flashback to Jakarta.
Loved the chnage they mode to Tess's death, the game is great but it comes down to bit ~ then shot. But the show version adds some world building and some depth too this virus. Better in every single way. AMAZING!
So since I live in Canada that entire episode was shot in Edmonton Alberta Canada 🇨🇦. The capital building was the city’s Legislator building it looks exactly like the building in the game that’s why it was used. The opening shot when they step outside is a street in downtown Edmonton. The museum is also a government building they dressed up. The production on this show has been top notch.
It reminded me of Jack in Lost counting to five when panicking to calm down and be rational, he felt everything in that moment and immediately turned the protector mode on and ran with ellie.
At first I was like jealous at those who played the game because this series gives them nostalgic feeling seeing some of the scenes, but then some of them were wishing they they did not know the game.
The reason the professor lady checked the mouth is because if the infection spread through a bite, it must have a mechanism to do so. Human teeth can't inject stuff like those of venomous snakes.

no, if tess had pushed that infected away, she wouldn't have been able to set fire to the building. all of them would have swarmed and tore her apart, she wouldn't have had those vital few seconds to light up the lighter. she stood there while the infected did that so that they wouldn't swarm her, in hopes the lighter would spark up and she could give joel/ellie time to get out...
The changing of spores to tendrils was a great change.
You are correct
yea you see this demonstrated in the opening when the mycologist does the autopsy of the female corpse and finds the tendrils in her throat still alive and moving over a day after her death
"Dead people can't be infected" yep
oh i just love watching my favourite reactors reacting to the opening scene for this episode! christine hakim and yayu unru are veterans, seniors, acting coaches, and mentors for indonesian actors. they’ve done so much for indonesian cinema and we couldn’t help but to feel so happy for them and proud to see them star in a huge project like this! and obviously they did a great job!!
im not indonesian but this makes me so happy to hear!! im glad theyre finally getting their flowers
@@asianfries08 i just remembered that christine hakim was in eat, pray, love (2010) with julia roberts, and she had also done many international projects before. but it’s just so cool seeing her in a project that the whole world is talking about! queen!

The way Erik's head snaps up at 16:00 when the Clicker shows up is gold
This 👏 it was like a happy child at Christmas 😂
You’re right, the cordyceps brain infection from the game lore can’t reanimate dead bodies
There are so many cool nods to the game with Ellie and Joel hiding behind those counters, Joel giving Tess the boost. They really give you that feeling of playing the game. I was half expecting one of the clickers to look right at Ellie but not attack her because Joel was around the corner and couldn't be seen.
I'm still waiting for the inevitable scene where Joel just punches a Clicker to death
Stand and applaud for Anna Torv everyone!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Fun Fact: So Neil Druckman and Craig Mazin did more research on fungus and found out that if spores were as much of a threat as they are in the game that humanity would be completely wiped out.
Tess death scene was sooo much disturbing than in the game. Gave me shivers just cause i was not expecting it
Tess death scene was completely alterated in comparison to games....in game she died in struggle...barely killing one or two in her own demise.....meanwhile in series she got the hero death(sacrificing herself and kiling dozens of infected for Ellie)
@@glacialtomb7251 i know I've played the game. But tv show option hurt more tbh.
Tess' live action death was so much more poignant and gruesome, imo. it's one of several changes the show made that legit surpass the game storyline
I feel like the addition of Tess and Ellie having a conversation and us spending more time with Tess made her death all the more emotional
as a native jakartan, i was really happy with that cold open. love it when indonesian actors show up in big western projects.
I knew Tess’ death was coming but wow I didn’t expect her to go out kiss of death style. It made uncomfortable which I’m pretty sure was the intention
i love how sometimes they just give us an over-the-shoulder shot following joel
plus i love how they always get joel to be the one who opens doors and moves cabnets like in the game lmao
In good Ellie fashion Bella secretary looked at gameplay footage without telling the staff
They must have a very detailed script but also helps the creators of the game are working on this bc alot of the game players say they do certain scenes exactly like the games.
they told her not to but she still watched game play on YT :))))
pedro tried to play the game but he wasn’t very good at it in his own words
I'm glad they're adding new stuff from before the outbreak
@@TheBananaBox I’m so hoping they do a first person infection view. Forreal 🙏
I'm so sad they cut out my favorite line delivery in the episode. "Okay. Jesus. Fine I'll have to throw a fuckin sandwich at them."
When Anna Torv does the hand cross with the gun and flashlight I had an Olivia Dunham flashback.
A great episode all round, but the highlight by far for me is the clickers. They absolutely killed it, perfect translation to live action. They were just as terrifying and freaky as in the games, looking forward to seeing more of them.
I'm loving the opening senes so far, I hope they keep going with them, it's such a cool way to enrich the worldbuilding and expand on the game lore!
I loved the opening backstory scenes. I guess I've seen so many zombie shows that kick off after the zombies have over run the world. I find seeing the actual fall of society even scarier.
LOVE the second renaissance this fantastic game is having! Apparently sales have gone up 200% and as a fan of both games I couldn’t be happier for more people to experience this amazing story
i’m such a fan of the music from the games. So happy to see We Allowed To Be Happy played at the end
Tess really had some awesome Gandalf parallels this episode.
Tess the White for episode 3?

Never played the game but I am loving this series so far! Really well made and Pedro is killing it🙏
I'm wondering how much of what we are getting to see now was originally written up by Neil but was ultimately scrapped because of the limitations of the ps3.
They nailed this episode can’t wait for more
I really like how smart, and aware of danger the doctors/military/scientists are, but there is just nothing that can be done, even doing everything right couldnt stop it.
We're 100% getting Ellie's mom. That's who Ashley Johnson is playing, Anna.
I loved the piece of music they used at the end from The Last of Us 2
I think the first scenes in each of the first two episodes were so incredible! Laying in the fear with only dialogue and exposition. So well done.
Did anyone else think Tess was actually going to take ellie's chicken sandwich? 😅
Imagine watching the beginning of the first episode with the scientist and realizing we're in winter and it's 50-60 degrees
Man i'm gonna miss Anna Torv such a great actor. Loved her in Fringe.
I caught that too. I was like, that is clearly a Potterhead.
Though I saw it as:
Adora means Adore in portuguese
I Love Nymph Lupin
This showing is going to be huge, one of the best of the year. I can see it!
Two episodes w chilling cold opens, my personal favorite part of the series besides Pedro of course lol the clickers look awesome too
I can’t believe how well they recreated the feeling of the combat with clickers.
I freaking love this show played both games and this is so good
I played the game I think in 2015.
When Joel took out the tape from his backpack I got sooo giddy lol
Cry Cry Cry, The Smart One, and Repeat What I'm Seeing. Such a dynamic trio.
Eric: This is fun! The Doctor: Bomb it all...
Those tendrils made me think of Vecna and the Upside Down monsters, another great episode,r.i.p. Tess :(
The thing with the tunnels of fungus that can awake swarms of infected anywhere is such a cool mechanic that could totally be used in the game. If they ever make a part III, I hope they use it!
My only critique is that Ellie would never joke about her infection, it's a touchy subject for her because of Riley
I played a little bit of the game so I'm somewhat familiar but my wife had no idea that this was based on a game and she's really into it. She saw the little girl silhouette at the beginning and thought it was his daughter. She was so surprised when she died.
Watching Calvin turn into Bluto during the fungus kiss was hilarious
I just want to show appreciation for this channel, since both Calvin and Rick are currently playing my favorite games of all time, and both of them seem to be enjoying it. I love this crew and I love this channel!
The intros to the first 2 episodes have been great
Loving the show, never played the game, and adding some realistic science makes it even scarier
AMAZING!
Wow! The guys who couldn't recognize "I'm taking a ride with my best friend" - Music for the masses - Depeche Mode. 80s
Eric I’m the same way I stock pile resources and grenades and such even if I never use it 😂. Great reaction again guys!
Really appreciate the addition of chapters!
Loved Pedro Pascal’s subtle expressions when he was making the decision to leave Tess behind.
It reminded me of Jack in Lost counting to five when panicking to calm down and be rational, he felt everything in that moment and immediately turned the protector mode on and ran with ellie.
Loved the reaction guys
At first I was like jealous at those who played the game because this series gives them nostalgic feeling seeing some of the scenes, but then some of them were wishing they they did not know the game.
I just remember the bottle making more noise. If I was trying to distract or ambush I would use a bottle. For damage or fewer enemies... Brick
Two main Indonesian actress and actor was Christine Hakim and Yayu Aw Unru, they're performance nailed it.
The reason the professor lady checked the mouth is because if the infection spread through a bite, it must have a mechanism to do so. Human teeth can't inject stuff like those of venomous snakes.
