    3:50 Lateral Relief. INCORRECT INFORMATION. The Reference Point is ON the edge of the red penalty area where your ball went in. You must take 2 club lengths from that. You cannot take a 'Full Relief' stance (like from a cart path) and then add 2 more club lengths!

    Thanks so much for that video. I recently went into a lateral red hazard zone and I wanted to drop my ball two club lengths as described. My playing partner insisted I play from the hazard even though it was virtually impossible. I took an 11 on that hole and it cost me the competition. I will stick up for myself now if it happens again. 👍🏽

    I concur - Wrong (incorrect) drop at 3:50 - It’s two club lengths from where it entered.

  • @erichansen3641

    Under the old Rules of Golf, we had red penalty areas called lateral water hazards and yellow penalty areas which were NOT considered lateral water hazards although considered water hazards of separate type ("direct"?). Lateral water hazards you could take the entry point and take 2 club lengths relief no closer to the hole. The other ("direct"?) you had to take 2 club lengths relief from behind them at the entry point. Can you please add this as an additional video please? This can be tricky to know how to handle. I saw Rory Mcllroy chip his ball in the water from around the green and have to then travel by electric cart way back to in front of the green on the opposite side of the water to hit his next shot.

    Hi Andy. In the video we can’t see any penalty area marking, but I assume from your pointing with the club that it’s close to the long grass, or the line of the long grass itself. The correct reference point for relief is on that edge of the penalty area. When you demonstrate taking relief you appear to simulate a stance outside the penalty area to mark another reference point from which you measure two club lengths. If the edge of the penalty area is as I suggested above, this would be incorrect. Is the edge of the penalty area close to, or at the line of, long grass? Or is it further out, where you placed the tee.

    Not sure what was the difference between going back to the last hit location and going to the line of entry. Seems like it would be more beneficial to go back to the line of entry rather than go all the way back to the last hit location. Did I miss something?

    • @mjsplash6555
      @mjsplash6555 Рік тому

      The difference is when selecting the line of entry option you have to go back on the line between the line of entry and the hole, not the line from where the last shot was taken. Hopefully that makes sense because I know that might sound confusing at first. In terms of when taking the last shot location would be better option, well typically it isn't, but there are plenty of times where it would be advantageous to do so. A couple of examples could be that the angle of the entry point and the hole is not as good as the previous shot location, or likely even more common, you might have a situation off a tee where your line of entry is not too far off the tee and you would be better off just reteeing versus dropping from the rough 20 yards closer. Obviously its pretty situational and there could be a myriad of other reasons

    is not a arc anymor but when you're backwards you can mark a circle and even if the ball kicks forward but still inside the circle the ball is eligible to play

  • @ksmithreps1
    @ksmithreps1 Рік тому

    At 3:48 Lateral drop is described incorrectly in this video. You DO NOT take full relief from the point of last entry then measure two club lengths...instead...one must measure two club lengths from the point of last entry then drop within those two club lengths.

  • @staffan.eriksson5061

    Should you not put a tee in the ground at the last option.? Two club length from where the ball crossed, and put the tee there, and then you have the arc where you can drop...It is just a minor fault, but i think you have to do it to follow the rules...

  • @attackthebeat

    When you consider the ball as having entered the hazard, does the ball have to roll into the hazard or can it fly into the hazard as well for when determining entry point into the hazard?

    when hitting the ball off the tee into the water and taking lateral relief, are you now hitting 3 or 4? Does the drop count as a stroke?

    • @AndyWeissinger

    I have tried almost everywhere for a ruling, perhaps you can enlighten me on the below scenario,
    Your ball is lying inside a red penalty area (Water hazard) but not in the water itself, however there is casual water where your ball is lying inside the penalty area, what are your options?
    This happened just the other day with a playing partner and I said bad luck you can't move it without a penalty,
    Hope you can clarify this for me as my playing partner disagreed,

    • @AndyWeissinger
      @AndyWeissinger  2 роки тому

      You are correct. As long as it is inside the line of the penalty area you cannot move it without penalty. It may look like casual water but if it is inside the penalty area it is not considered casual water and must be played as it lies inside the penalty area. As rule 16.1 reads with casual water that relief is allowed anywhere on the course EXCEPT when the ball is in a penalty area. Hope this helps

    So, you first take your stance outside the penalty area, mark where the ball would be, and THEN measure your 2 club lengths? Because I always thought it was 2 club lengths from the penalty line? This makes a huge difference. (3:48 on video)

    • @dbasrus
      @dbasrus 3 роки тому +1

      No, it's not correct. From the Rules of Golf:
      "Reference Point: The estimated point where the original ball last crossed the edge of the red penalty area.
      Size of Relief Area Measured from Reference Point: Two club-lengths"

    Trying to figure out why there is the option to drop back on the line OR drop two club lengths away only. Why would we want to limit the drop distance by only two club lengths when there is the option to drop as far back as we want? What am I missing?

  • @aaronh.917

    Is there any difference in the amount of penalty strokes received based on whether the ball is lost or found in the penalty area?

    • @tomgoodin5974
      @tomgoodin5974 3 роки тому +1

      In general I don't believe so, though there are some issues that relate to whether you are reasonably sure or certain that the ball was actually lost in the penalty area and not somewhere else, which might require you to rehit from the prior location

    • @AndyWeissinger
      @AndyWeissinger  3 роки тому +2

      Tom is correct in his comment. rule 17.1.c states that it is known or virtually certain your ball is in the penalty area but you cannot find it then you may proceed the same way as if you found it when dealing with the penalty and the options you have in putting a ball back into play.

  • @dougpickering2295
    @dougpickering2295 3 роки тому +1

    If your ball hits on ground then goes into water, after crossing water in front of green, you drop where ball hit by the green, but no closer to the hole, correct?

    • @AndyWeissinger
      @AndyWeissinger  3 роки тому +1

      Only if the penalty area is Red can you take your drop next to that spot. If it is Yellow the only options you have are to take stroke and distance to hit another from the original spot or to take the point it last crossed the penalty area and keep that in line with the hole and go back as far as you want (therefore keeping the penalty area in between you and the hole).

    • @pdub7562
      @pdub7562 3 роки тому +2

      Yes, but around the green it can often be hard to take lateral relief that is no closer to the hole so you may only have the stroke-and-distance and back-on-the-line relief available to you.

    • @AndyWeissinger
      @AndyWeissinger  3 роки тому +1

      @@pdub7562 Correct. In most cases where there is no spot closer to the hole to drop it will be marked as a yellow penalty area, but not always.

    where do you drop if you hit a ball at the green it goes over the green through the bunker behind it and into the water hazard behind bunker, do you drop in the bunker or another area

    • @AndyWeissinger
      @AndyWeissinger  3 роки тому

      In that instance your best option would most likely be to hit again from where you hit the first ball. Depending on the size of the water behind the green your spot might be quite far away. The bunker would not be an option because that would be closer to the hole than the water that the ball went into.
