    Thank you Dr. GretaGolf- good video.
    Worth mention- USGA Rule 18 "Stroke and Distance / Out of Bounds" does NOT include the "2-stroke" penalty / drop where the ball went out / was lost.
    It's a "local" rule, but if any type of organized event, players must verify if it applies.

    • @DeiSchwarzfalke
      @DeiSchwarzfalke 2 роки тому

      It's not only a local rule it's a rule that is not fully understood on how it should be implemented. Here in N. Nevada we recommend clubs not use this local rule. For NNGA and USGA events we NEVER use this rule. All it starts is problems.

    I think it's worth noting the 2-stroke, fairway-drop rule for lost/OB ball is a local rule, so not always in effect. I just learned about this one and, unfortunately, plan on using it often.

    • @DrGretaGolf
      @DrGretaGolf  3 роки тому +4

      Yes, you’re correct - it’s a local rule designed to keep groups moving at an acceptable pace of play. This way, players do not have to go all the way back to the tee box after a lengthy hunt for their lost drives.
      We’ll make a note to advise that it’s a local rule when we update in short order!!

    • @dsbrainard
      @dsbrainard 3 роки тому +1

      @@DrGretaGolf Strange. So, we're penalized an additional stroke for speeding up play? Sounds like "Pace Of Play" isn't as important of an issue as they make it sound.

    • @DrGretaGolf
      @DrGretaGolf  3 роки тому +1

      It’s certainly not the ideal to incur a penalty for sure, but in this situation in which the ball is lost, the player would incur a penalty one way or another. So, it’s a bit of a trade off, but accepting the penalty and dropping further down vs. re-teeing is a viable option and definitely time saving in most instances.

    • @apaulmcdonough2170
      @apaulmcdonough2170 3 роки тому +1

      @@dsbrainard since the proper Penalty is *Stroke and Distance* - and whenever there is a suspicion that your Ball went OB or might be Lost - *a Provisional Ball should have been played.* That Provisional Ball would now lie 2 Strokes more than the OB/Lost Ball.

      The Local Rule Drop is a substitution for the Provisional Ball.

    Not sure if this information is correct. I thought if you hit the ball out of bounds or called for a lost ball the only option you have is to re-tee your ball under penalty of one stroke. Stroke and distance. The option of taking a drop within two club lengths from the point your ball entered the OB area or from a approximate area where you lost your ball under the penalty of two strokes is a local rule only adopted by some golf clubs to speed up play if I'm not mistaken.
    Yellow stakes you have two options by taking the two club lengths rule from the point your ball entered into the hazard area keeping the same alignment from the point of entry and the hole itself, obviously not nearer the hole, this option I'm not sure was mentioned or secondly as correctly stated you can take your next shot from a position as far back at your discretion but again keeping the same alignment between the point of entry into the hazard and the hole. Keeping in mind their maybe a nearby drop Zone area where you should take you penalty shot.

    Hi, great video!
    Off the tee your ball goes into a penalty area (red or yellow stakes) you either find your ball but can't hit it or don't find it at all. You proceed to take the right relief option and drop instead of re teeing. Would this incure a two shot penalty once you have dropped or would it incure just 1 shot penalty? I understand anything of the tee that goes OB (white stakes) you will either re tee for 3 or drop for 3 (hitting for 4) up the fairway. Thanks.

    • @DrGretaGolf
      @DrGretaGolf  2 роки тому

      Hi @jordan Carroll
      Thanks for watching the video - I’m glad it was helpful to you!! The short answer to your question is one-stroke penalty. I think the easiest way to fully address your question re: # of penalty strokes assessed is to explain as directly stated by the USGA Official Rules of Golf:
      When you take relief from a penalty area, you get one penalty stroke. For yellow penalty areas, you have two relief options. For red penalty areas, you have three relief options (the same two relief options as you do for yellow, plus one additional option.) For a yellow penalty area, you may take relief by dropping into a relief area using (1) the spot at which your last stroke was made under stroke and distance (see Rule 17.1d(1)) or (2) the back-on-the-line relief procedure (see Rule 17.1d(2)). For a red penalty area, you have the two options above for a yellow penalty area, plus an additional option to take lateral relief. Lateral relief allows you to drop a ball into a relief area measured from where your ball last crossed the edge of red penalty area. From that reference point, you are allowed to drop outside the penalty area and anywhere within two club-lengths of that spot, no nearer to the hole (see Rule 17.1d(3))
      I hope this full explanation makes it easy and clear about how to properly execute to ensure it remains just a one-stroke penalty!! 😊

However you talked about out of bounds and being able to drop the ball on the fairway for a two stroke penalty. Please tell me if I'm wrong, I thought that was model local rule E5 and is only in use if the course says it's in use? I was having a semi-argument on the internet recently with someone. Is this a US thing where the whole of the US has adopted this or something? Because USGA and R&A both state you have to take stroke and distance. Thanks in advance.

      Since Rule changes of 2019, in a penalty area:
      1. You can ground your club
      2. You can move loose impediments
      3. You can move moveable obstructions (plastic cup, etc.)
      4. You can take practice swings
      Basically everything you can do in the General Area but you DO NOT get free relief from any immovable obstructions in the Penalty Area.

Are you just trying to keep things simple or have they done away with that? I also missed you saying how much of a penalty ( if any) was incurred if the ball finds its way into a penalty area.. The way I heard you saying " relief" one would gather that there is no penalty at all...............just " relief". I'm pretty sure that not how it works. How's about redoing this whole video and making a few additions/ corrections? Thank you.

    I play at a course with an island green. There no red or yellow stakes to define the nature of the water, the penalty area. It can make a huge difference if it would be yellow or red. I've seen opinions that it should be yellow, so you should play it as yellow if you go in the water, and I've seen opinions that if the water is unmarked, it should be assumed to be red. What is the correct answer and can you reference a rule # in the rule book. I can't find anything on this. Thanks!!

      Hi Kevin,
      First - thanks so much for watching! This is an interesting question, and I bet this situation is a bit more common than we might think.
      I will take a close look at the official rules of golf to see if anything is there. However, my first thought here is to learn a bit more about (the official) local rules regarding these areas of the course. Have you asked the course officials about these spots? How are they treated during league play, tournaments, events, etc.?
      Please let me know!

    • @DeiSchwarzfalke
      @DeiSchwarzfalke 2 роки тому

      As the person who marks courses for tournaments we consider two things. 1. What was the intent of the course design. 2. Where will the player take penalty relief. If there is no back on the line option from where a hole location will be we paint it red, so not to force the player to have to rehit the shot. If the hole was designed so that the penalty area needed to be hit over we paint it yellow. BUT as of 2019 any penalty are may be marked red. Plus ANYTHING can be made a penalty area. Here in the west we have areas with tall fescue. If I feel a player could hit into this area and not find the ball we paint it red to avoid the stroke and distance lost ball situation. Most courses have moved to all red areas. The sad fact is it saves money and time for many courses to not mark at all. So they don't. Check the back of the score card or ask in the golf shop. It's not in the rule book.

    Let's count the errors in this video:
    1. OB is not "penalty area". OB is OB, it is a beast unto itself. Penalty areas are Marked as Red or Yellow.
    2. Golf doesn't have "shots", it has "strokes"
    3. Standard Rules do not allow a 2-stroke penalty drop for OB.
    4. Talking about lost ball and then say "out of bounds" 2:00
    5. She Said a player can play a shot without penalty if a ball is found in a penalty area. Need to stipulate must be played from its location in the penalty area.
    6. Stroke and distance description regarding relief from yellow penalty area is terrible 3:15
    7. Back on the line description is so wrong. 3:35
    8. It is not "impossible" to "get behind" a lateral water hazard. 4:00. That's why red penalty areas have a "back on the line" option.
    The seems like a joke video, but I think it isn't.
