    2012 was the year of the Jacks. I fish lots in the Gulf of the Farallons . As you probably know we use barbless hooks when trolling or jigging for salmon. Do any of the guides in the river use barbless hooks? I think it would be a good thing to practice. Thanks for posting the video. Ed

    California only clips 25% of adipose fins. Meaning there is a good chance a fish with an adipose is actually still a hatchery fish. We should be clipping 100% like Oregon and Washington do.

    • @jackellenberger3578
      @jackellenberger3578 6 років тому +2

      the tribes in washington often do no fin clip so the sportsman have to release hatchery fish too. sucks!!

    • @Jrza7x
      @Jrza7x 9 років тому +1

      They are fishing for the reaction strikes because typically salmon do stop feeding when they hit fresh water so the strike is out of anger or curiosity more than for food

    Hey great video! Just one thin to add on it you should look at the regulations on non buoyant lures. it says 1 ounce and over-single hook- non buoyant -Under 1 ounce treble hook is allowed- should have this info in your video. Good luck out there.

  • @InformativeFisherman

    Being able to lead the fish with a tighter drag and to build a better load into the stretch of your line is crucial. The reason you will see me strip line is strictly to maintain the rods action when it starts to get into a negative position that can damage the rod. When I'm jigging and hooking them straight from above I prefer to stay as close to the fish as possible that's also why I run them down on the trolling motor. If you jig shifts around to much your odds of landing them decreases.

  • @shastasteve3929
    @shastasteve3929 12 років тому

    Great video. One minor correction though. Just because the salmon does not have a clipped fin does not mean it is a wild fish. Most likely, in the Sacramento River, it is a hatchery fish. It only means that the salmon does not have a wire tag in it's head. They generally tag about 25% of the fish before they release them.

    I have noticed you have not commented on the treble hook on any lure/jig over 1 ounce. I too thought any jig (example P Line minnow) over 1 once had to use only a single hook ( Gamakatsu side wash hooks are great examples). Just don't want you to get caught using a treble and get a ticket. Enjoy your fishing videos by the way. Hope to see ya out on the water someday.

      Treble hooks are legal to use there. This section does make it sound like it is illegal, however he is fishing near Freeport. Since Freeport is south of Highway 50, it is considered the delta. Section B here states that this restriction does not apply to where he is fishing. Had he been fishing north of the Highway 50 bridge then yes it would not be legal.
      2.10. HOOK AND WEIGHT RESTRICTIONS.
      (a) Definition of Gap: For the purposes of this section,
      “gap” means the distance measured from the point
      of a hook to the shank.
      (b) Maximum Gaps and Gear Rigging for Rivers and
      Streams unless otherwise provided (does not apply
      to lakes and reservoirs, the Sacramento-San Joaquin
      Delta (see Section 1.71 for definition of the Delta),
      and the Colorado River).
      1. No person shall use any single hook with a gap
      greater than 1 inch or any multiple hook with a gap
      greater than 3/4 inch.
      2. It is unlawful to use any hook which is directly
      or indirectly attached closer than 18 inches to any
      weight exceeding 1/2 ounce.
      3. It is unlawful to use any multiple hook or more than
      one single hook on non-buoyant lures exceeding
      one ounce.
      1.71. SACRAMENTO-SAN JOAQUIN RIVER
      DELTA.
      The Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta includes
      all rivers, sloughs, canals, cuts, forebays, and
      flooded islands within the area south of Interstate
      80 to its junction with Highway 50, and south of
      Highway 50 via the Pioneer Bridge to its junction
      with Highway 99, west of Highway 99, north of
      Interstate 580, 205, and Highway 120, and east of
      Interstate 680.

    Big fish are the results to big baits more often than not. try using a smaller live fish you catch there as bait or using a much larger lure than normal. Just remember there are always more small than large patience will pay off.

    I enjoyed your video on jigging for king salmon, I have been jigging in the Pacific NW, since the early 80’s, my only comment about the video, was your handling of foul hooked fish in 70 degree water, there would be a high degree of mortality on fish that were played for a long time, better to net fish as quickly as possible, revive and release, in Oregon it’s against the law to bring a field hooked salmon fish into the boat

    Adipose fin presence does NOT necessarily make it a "wild" salmon... Most CA hatcheries don't clip adipose fins from salmon as they do for hatchery steelhead. Many hatcheries do clip the adipose from only those salmon whose heads are fitted with coded wire tags so they know when to collect heads during creel and/or carcass surveys/counts (to get data). FWIW... I'm not correcting you to be an asshole, just to clarify. Your videos are well done and surely appreciated by many. I wouldn't bother to correct you if I didn't deem you worthy ;)
