Do you tie the Fluro leader to the braid with a swivel or line-to-line knot?

You want a swivel in there. The jig spins like crazy on the way down so you want something to let it not tangle all the way up to your reel

Excellent entry description on bottom fishing! While jigging for lings using 20 ounce we landed 3 HALI! literally just outside Ukee harbour....go figure.
Question: what is the ideal weight for bottom fishing at 100-130' slack tide? Just enough to get down? What about the onset of a flood tide; is there a specific angle (line to the water) where "your wasting your time!"? I see the line in the your vid displays a vertical line. Can you please comment on ebb vs flood vs slack for jigging?
    Awesome Vids, tnx for sharing

Thank you for the great video. But how do you prevent catching common bottomfish such as rockfist when jigging for salmon? It's a similar method for catching all kinds of bottomfish.

Thanks for watching. Sometimes avoiding bottom fish while jigging can be tough for sure. Typically we like to try jigging in areas where we have been catching salmon already while trolling. If you do this though, please don't do it if other boats are already trolling that spot and get in their way! We also like to use the mac fish jigs in the herring aid pattern since they seem to really attract salmon moreso than other rock fish. Of course we also recommend having a descending device on board so you can quickly descend a rock fish if you happen to catch one and if you find all you're getting is rock fish and no salmon then it may mean it's time to go back to trolling. Sometimes when the stars align and you can get into a bunch of salmon in relatively shallow water then jigging is definitely worth trying out! It's an absolute blast!

@@ReelWestCoast Thank you so much for the quick reply! That is very helpful. I love your shows and more people should watch your videos - they are great. In future videos, could you please explain a bit more about the technique and explanation of the gear/lures used? Thank you again!

All we’ve done for last three seasons is jig! Nothing like having the rod in hand, you feel every nibble and hit! No noise from the motor too. We basically have the same setup as you guys, +-10 ft rod, similar reels, same lures. 100% correct re good electronics. Only difference is we never leave the lure near bottom, unless we are targeting lingcod, otherwise hooking too many bottom fish. We count the passes on the real to know what depth we want to stop at.

I’ve hooked 2 and both times the line broke. It’s 25lb set up. My friend caught a 20lb on it day before. Would you recommend I increase the line load?

This may sound stupid but why do you use a 10Ft rod for jigging!! A steelhead rod? I always see people on boats use 10ft+ jigging rods. A 6’6”-7ft jigging rod would be way more appropriate and save you less fatigue on your wrist!

I agree I use an 8 foot fast action loomis GL4 hot shot rod it is bad ass for the hook set!
