I am not gonna keep Aliens because the blu-ray is better. I picked up True Lies as it came out in stores in the UK on Monday and happened to see it and was like "fine fine I will get it becuase I have never seen it". So I decided to pick that up and now having seen it my good it looks really quite disgusting. Just look no further than Speed (1994) or Face/Off (1997 to see what action of this era can look like on 4k. Maybe waxy isnt the word because that implies lack of detail, the way I will describe them is Plasticy. It looks plastic (sometimes almost like CGI) because the image and detail we are seeing isnt real in the slightest, it is created and interpreted by the AI algorithm that they are using. Everything looks fake. True Lies looks fine until Arnold takes his scuba diving mask off and instantly his face looks like CGI. I may pick up The Abyss, I havent decided. Like people are like "woahhh it looks better than the DVD". Like no shit lol, im sure it looks much better than a DVD I dont debate that but it isnt close to the Picture we should have gotten from proper scans and restorations that so many boutique labels and releases are capable of doing. So for that I may yet get The Abyss. The True Lies 4k sure does look better than a DVD...a literal DVD (this is what we are praising guys? that it can look better than a DVD ugh), but whether it looks better than the old HD master used on the bootleg Blu-ray or the D-VHS, that I dont know. Because they have just AI Upscaled that old master, they both have the same basis, they both have their merits. The old master is a dated and quite poor HD transfer, but it is far less distracting to watch. Sometimes the 4k has better colours and sometimes the old master has better colours. In my comparison it is very apparent that there are many spots in the new 4k master where detail has been completely scrubbed and replaced with what the AI thinks should be there. For example there is a scene where Jamie Lee Curtis clearly has colour in her cheeks and they are redder than the rest of her face or skin, but in the 4k all of her skin is uniform and the colour and detail has been scrubbed and replaced with AI generated detail. The whole image has been "painted" over by the AI.
This is apparent in all three of these transfers, it is just whether you notice or whether that annoys you. It annoys me but sure it looks better than a 20 year old DVD. So Aliens can get away cos it is horrible and nothing compared to the blu-ray, True Lies is mixed because it is also basically up against a DVD and The Abyss is better than its previous DVD. B ut still we shouldn't condone the methods used to create these instead of doing actual restoration work. So for that reason I still may not pick up The Abyss.
These 3 4K discs are bad but true lies is horrendous. The abyss is essentially a special edition with new colors and effects so call them all that from the start.

They’re not bad whatsoever. At least Aliens and The Abyss aren’t. You’re being dramatic/ flat out lying. True Lies is the worst, but the other two look amazing and you’re wrong if you say otherwise.

Like Aliens, once you see the Special Edition of The Abyss, you will never go back. The Abyss is Cameron's Close Encounters of the Third Kind. He proved that he could be just as good with campy storytelling as Steven Spielberg. Then with Terminator 2 and Titanic, Cameron proved that he is an even better director.

Don't watch this movie in theatrical version. Special extended cut is the proper way to watch this masterpiece. It's so much better than the theatrical version
I'll grab this at some point but im trying to slow down to catch up on my backlog with the exception of Vinegar Syndromes HWTBF sale lol. Im just glad i dont care about slip covers because id be going crazy right now about these releases. Great review as always
I love the Abyss. It’s of my favourite Cameron movies. We need an honest behind the scenes documentary of the making of the movie, apparently it was a very bad filming experience for most of the cast. Ed Harris won’t talk about it to this day. Side note:Cornette on the T.V behind you 😁
Had to be hell filming a lot of the film in the water. Ed Harris held his breath with water in is helmet? That would be awful
how could they have messed up all of these? the 4k transfers from what i heard are so damn bad

I got True Lies and Abyss. Skipped out on Aliens cause I'm fine with my blu ray boxset, but I might pick it up. Are there any new special features on it or is it all old features?
I don't own The Abyss on Blu-ray yet but I have seen the film it's very good my favorite James Cameron film of all time is The Terminator True Lies was never a favorite for me I own the Quadrilogy set on DVD and Blu-ray plus the anniversary edition of Aliens which I haven't watched yet so I don't know if it's worth picking up the new set I don't have a 4K player is it worth picking up the Abyss set if you don't own a Blu-ray of it
I also prefer the theatrical version. I don't need everything to be explained.

I thought The Abyss was the best and I suspect there is a reason why it was the only one rereleased in theatres!
What’s bullshit is how The Abyss is out of stock still.
I will definitely say the theatrical version of Aliens is great and I agree with you there, but if you haven’t seen the Special Edition version of The Abyss, you need to watch that instead of theatrical. It’s a much better version and adds a lot to the film, especially the ending with the aliens.

When it comes to the people who think it looks waxy. I really think they adjust their 4K settings so much on their TV to where it makes movies look like what they're seeing on certain movies. These movies looked beautiful on my LG C3 OLED. CHH keeping it real 👍🏼

I think all 3 look great. True ain’t the best but it’s still really good. The only problem with t2 transfer is they accidentally used the 3d print. James Cameron just may be one of the best directors. T2 alone would put him at the top. Imo.
Abyss , true lies, aliens
Abyss is a remarkable film for the underwater scenes alone. Ahead of its time.
I thought all the 4k’s looked good. Just not great. Something is a little off. But still worth the purchase. If I didn’t know about the waxy complaints I don’t know if I would have noticed. The films are just lacking the depth or almost 3d look to a good 4k film.
Atmos upgrade is worth the money alone.
