Reminder that the PS3 had a total of 512mb of ram (0.5gb), half of which was the VRAM. A PS5 has 16gb of RAM and an additional 512mb of RAM specifically set aside as an SSD cache. Killzone 2 did all of that on a fraction of the memory available.
ps3 OS memory footprint, which was always bloated vs 360, went down from 120MB to 50MB only in 2010, that makes all those PS3 games even more impressive
back then developers had a bit of knowledge about computers so they were able to perform these optimizations, nowadays if your code is bloated, you just throw a gorillion more RAM into it until it works.
@@Smougda funny you say that, because hao Chen of Bungie said the opposite back in Dec 2011 after reach and before destiny was announced 'We found out that even for 360, we were grossly underutilizing the CPU, mostly due to our multithreading design that doesn't allow us to spread the work and execute them in parallel. So we redid the whole architecture in the new multiplat engine' basically the 360 single thread was so good they didn't even need to do optimize their multithread like PS3 devs were forced to. the full interview is called 'all that glitters' on Game Developer. fun fact, the og Xbox had a dedicated sound processing chip so halo 2 could do all the audio for free, but for h3 almost 1 whole 360 CPU core had to be reserved just to do sound, and you get less variation in some audio like marine dialogue, if u play straight from disk and without the 360 hdd
@@winlover37 you should be. it was a stupendous time in chaos. sony should be ashamed to of not brought it back and to of head stomped zipper into closing down.
As a curiosity, at the end of the development of Killzone 2, the developers of the game discovered that they only used 60% of the PS3. They use all the SPU (there are 6 SPUs), but not 100%. In Killzone 3 they don't use it at 100% either, according to the interviews they gave, they only managed to use 95%, admitting that there was room for improvement in anti-aliasing. Killzone 2 was set to be released in 2008, but Sony, seeing that there was a lot of competition, decided to delay the game until 2009 and also put more money into making it come out better. Killzone 2 came out very polished at its premiere.
I remember playing Killzone 2 on launch day. It blew my mind how good it looked and sounded. I honestly couldn’t believe graphics that good were coming from the PS3.
@@hectop9593 Yeah, it's called attitude and confidence, which these younger developers do not have. Just look at the behind the scenes of Gears of War (2005), and see how much Microsoft executives and management kept challenging Epic Games regarding advertising with the chainsaw, and how the producer of GoW did not back down or give up. Compare that to now, where a ton of the management and developers are such pushovers and lack any sort of self respect for their product and customers.
8 years and a hunded million dollars for a game that feels like it was made by 3 people in a single year for free. Yeah sure the gun animations are good but there is literally a minecraft mod that has the same level of animation quality, if not better. What the actual fuck man...

I upvoted because this is my firstime getting to experience killzone... But this is the wrong way to compare what looks like a war/military game and then juxtaposing it with a colorful/family shooter. Obviously the realism of everything you showed off doesn't really matter for Concord it's a game meant to sell cosmetics on some level but that only happens if it's fun and it plays well... And despite the naysayers - it actually is fun and plays well
@@wombat7961 The naysayers being the whole terraqueous globe minus 600 people. Look, if it was actually fun it would have been played by more than 600 people, no matter all the problems it's got.
Concord's so damn lazily done that even an (considered old) videogame, PVZ GW2 still lives well in Steam and there's plenty content creators that keep it alive, even though it's for kids yet is played by sane adults.
@@Leo-mj1mt you nailed it. Many so called kids gates have such creativity that we adult gamers not only enjoy, but also admire. My personal favorite: Rayman Legends
Killzone 2 had a budget of around $40 mil, developer size of 120 employees. Then you have Concord budget around $200 mil, developer size of 169 employees, and 8 years in development. If anything this shows that if you are making a game and the team behind it is passionate about making a piece of art and something great they themselves would wanna play you can do anything. Instead Concord decides to hire people based on their political believes, skin color and sexuality and thats how you get an uninspired bland game like Concord with zero passion behind it and no vision other then pushing their political believes on others. The Concord devs themselves also hate video games and games as many of them expressed that on their public twitter accounts, this was the only logical outcome for Concord.
@@PatrickArcato I know, MGS2 was super ahead of its time. When I saw a video that showed the attention to detail of the game, I was absolutely impressed.

Concord is so lifeless and hollow. It just looks like generic assets thrown together with generic screen effects mashed together without any charm or character. Killzone 2 may have had a simple colour pallet but it was gritty and atmospheric as fuck. Concord feels like every modern videogame fused together.
If You've ever played TF2, You'd know how disappointing in terms of damage the Liberator rocket launcher is compared to stock weapon, but it comes NOWHERE near as close as Concord's rocket launcher is. What'd the point of it if it barely deals any damage? Isn't the thing about explosive weapons in games is that they do a lot of damage in one shot?
@@reknostarfox4690 This video is the first time I've seen the grenades from Concord and I could swear on my life that they've found a free explosion starter pack asset. One that basically gives You a barebones explosion code and animation but You'll have to do the rest to polish it out, to make explosion development faster than it would be had they started it from scratch. So in my understanding, these smartheads took this skeleton asset, tweaked some code here and there a little, replaced original animation with their own and called it finished. I've seen literal beginner devs making GMod mods with better explosions than what Concord has. Don't get me started on that short little growing floor plant section of the video, I literally made the "Was that the bite of 87!?" Markiplier face when I first saw it. They had the audacity to make a growing .jpeg vine texture for a plant thing. For a triple a game.

12:00 One reason I prefer classes over heros/operators is that from a world standpoint they are just soldiers, nameless nobodies, they do not matter in the grand scheme of things. When you die, you don't respawn. *You are replaced.*
Plus you can insert yourself in a nameless nobody. I'm not white but I couldn't see my soldier in FPS games like Killzone and Battlefield 2 so why do I care; he can look like who I want to be.
@@mobiusraptor7 I also think it adds to the tragedy of the conflict depicted. Battlefield 2042's lore was setting up a global conflict in a pre-apocalypse world, Imagine if we played as regular grunts and made all player deaths canon.
Do not forget the most important advantage for Killzone 2: it does not require a constant internet connection and, therefore, it will never die. Concord's online requirement means it will not be playable within a year and a half; just like those suicidal arcades that Capcom (among others), used to make.

@@D_Kirby Eh, the first Killzone is nowhere near as good and can be safely skipped. It's bland, boring, unpolished and ugly even by PS2 standards. The re-releases' HD coat doesn't help. The devs were however aware of the mistakes they had made and their shortcomings, which, together with a healthy cash infusion from Sony, allowed them to improve considerably during the development of Killzone 2.

Sony Exclusives have their occasional terrible game, such as No Man's Sky. The difference between NMS and Concord is that NMS failed due to being extremely ambitious, the marketing was inappropriate and the priec tag wasn't worth the game players were buying on release and has since redeemed itself. NMS wanted to be *the* next big innovation that would define games for years to come but had an extremely rough start due to many factors. Concord, on the other hand, was designed by a pie chart.
@@lambda760what's even sadder is that NMS still had passion, hence its eventual rise to greatness. What exactly are they going to do about Concord? What exactly is there to fix? There's not much to work with because unlike NMS there's no niche really being satisfied here. The vast majority of the people this game panders to either a) don't play this kind of game, or videogames in general or b) wouldn't like it because the game simply sucks in general.
Concord: 8 years, $200 million spent, 697 peak players, got a 7/10 from IGN Black Myth wukong: 4 years, $100 million spent, 2.4 million peak player, 15 million copy sold, got a 8/10 from IGN. The sole fact it’s one point away from Black Myth Wukong is a crime
When you're as dependent on early copies & publisher favors as IGN is, a 7/10 is realistically the worst score one can give. 5/10 and below is reserved for Indie games and niche titles by foreign studios.
What's worse is that Concord runs on the Unreal Engine 5 which is (at the time of writing) the most cutting edge engine in terms of visual fidelity and somehow Killzone a game that came out fifteen years ago and uses a custom made engine looks miles better. Just goes to show that it doesn't matter if you have the best tools, if the one holding it doesn't give a damn the end result it's gonna be mediocre.
afterall the engine is quite irrelevant, you can make old engines look great with high resolution textures, but you can also make new engines look bad with low res/bad textures
@@BH4x0r this is true, but it's a crime to say UE5 doesn't look good when used properly. between the tech in it and the actual optimisation allowing for really pretty games, they still have zero excuse for how awful Concord looks aside from being plain lazy/incapable. even the tech demos look better than this.

This game's failure doesn't bode well for Marathon assuming it isn't delayed indefinitely and restarts development from the ground-up as a traditional single player FPS, or gets scrapped entirely. Then again, I wouldn't be shocked if they moved forward with their initial concept anyway because publishers refuse to take a fucking hint about the general public perception of these games, all they want to do now is scam a few whales, abandon the game, rinse and repeat instead of selling a game normal, sane people would enjoy and resonate with like they used to.
The funny thing is Concord was made by former Bungie devs the influence is pretty clear it's a Destiny clone. Bungie has terrible management so it won't be surprising if Marathon gets delayed or ends up being a dumpster fire like the original Destiny.
I think singularity and timeshift went through something similar, where most of the final game was actually rushed out within just a year, cods like bo3 suffered from that too
Old Gen Developers: We desire for you to feel the darkness of war and like the sky is clawing at your soul. To feel the gruesome environment of war. New developers: We want you to choose the right outfit
New gen: we um want you to feel included and loved with these obviously very stereotypical happy characters who are excited to fight! We also want to make sure that players are so focused on how fat and black one of our heroes are that they forget about how little effort we put into the game! Equality is more important in good gameplay than good gameplay after all
Actually, Gaming is doing fine, you just need to look a little bit deeper. As AAA experiences a crash in slow motion, AA and Indie games are doing surprisingly well. Not to mention remasters of old faves.
You're old and on valium good games in the last two years Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree, Elden Ring, God of war Ragnarok, baldur's gate 3, Tears of the Kingdom, Alan Wake 2, RE4 Remake, Armored Core 6, Cyberpunk Phantom Liberty, Final Fantasy 16, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Remnant 2, Lies of P, Sea of stars, Pizza tower, Spiderman 2, Street Fighter 6, Pikman 4, Mario Bross Wonder, Hi fi Rush, Blasphemous 2, Prince of Persia, Wukong, Dragon Dogma 2, Helldivers 2, Another's Crab Treasure...
The wind effects are still incredible. Seeing the debri of the grenade explosion get carried away along with the sand on the ground was so cool to see.
I like that you included KZ2 MP map footage to show this wasn't just single-player set piece stuff. Back in the day I thought that was the default state for modern game technology. But really these things require dedicated and detail oriented developers making sure everything feels right. The same goes for Far Cry 2 versus modern Far Cry, such a big difference in how much interaction there is in the world. Another issue is that so many games these days use pre-made game engines like UE5. If the engine the team is using doesn't have a certain feature, it simply doesn't get included in the game. While back in the day tech was more custom built to fit the game they were making.
The only thing I didn't like about games in the PS3/360 era is how games were so grimmy, brownish... And now I don't like how cartoonish and colorful they look, like... Can't there be any balance?
There's Just Cause 2, which seamlessly blended different environmental terrains and locations together with bright, vibrant colors and insane draw distance fidelity.
As someone who plays on Xbox, I'm glad Concord didn't come to our console. I also wish I could get a PS3 with PSREWIRED just so that I could play online.
From an older gamer, this is the kind of detail we appreciated more back in the day. All the little details that really showed the developers wanted you to have the most immersive experience that tech could provide. I remember spending hours replaying games like this just to see how much I could interact with the landscape and NPCs. I specifically remember wasting away summer days obsessing over Jumping Flash in such a manner.
Now I will put killzone 2 in my list of inspiration games of my project "Suicide madness⛔ " This project is based on the online cartoon series " madness combat " It is a 3D online offline first-person shooter game with a cartoonish and realistic style. The gameplay similar to killing floor 2 with an RPG system like Payday 2
Look at the tonality of both games, Dark, gritty and dirty war setting. Then you have a brightly lit, upbeat environment also featuring guns and killing. Games have taken a very strange direction.
That's what happens when Minecraft, Overwatch and Fortnite make a gazillion dollars. Suits see this level of profits and that's what they think the majority want. Sony under Jim Ryan closed all innovative studios and they now make either AAA games or this Overwatch + Guardians of the Galaxy cartoonish clone thrash. No in-between

Games nowadays are missing three key factors
One: passion
Two: creative freedom
Three: the ability to make a game without needing to add fat black gay characters as one of the requirements so you can easily write off the equality check
Can you imagine how good Killzone 2, 3, and Mercenary would be if you put them on PS5 and all you did was like, up the resolution and get it running at 60fps. That would be a system seller for me.
Killzone collection, 4K/120, HDR support
@@Cruxis_Angel they make that and I’ll buy a ps5
The multiplayer in KZ2 alone would sell the collection, such an underrated multiplayer experience and one of the best.
I'll give you the best comment in this comment section.
@@BRAMCRACK3R Literally, i would actually pay that money for being able to play that MP again with an increased frame rate
FEAR was a more interactive game than Concord and that was even older (2005!)
Yeah. In spite of having the generic office space that Armacham has, it's got unique enemy NPCs and some obscure Easter eggs (one being a dancing Norton Mapes)
@@trainenthusiast5199 that office was the perfect blank canvas for players to turn into a fine picasso painting with the blood and guts of the Replicas and the bullet holes of your guns
Yk, maybe I was too harsh on the killzone series
SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 2 on the PSP released almost 20 years ago, and that Sony exclusive has better maps and multiplayer than Concord. God, I miss that game's multiplayer.
Remember glitching through gates and killing out of bounds in the map, and the game had voice chat/clans/lobbies funny ass voice chat
It even supported voice chat on the PSP to! Spent a lot of summers playing that online 😅
my dog chewed so many of those little psp mic/headphones up cost me like 40 dollars each
This game's failure doesn't bode well for Marathon assuming it isn't delayed indefinitely and restarts development from the ground-up as a traditional single player FPS, or gets scrapped entirely.
Marathon failing. Other than it looking nothing like it should, imagine brining that back only for it to bomb.
I wouldnt trust nu-bungie to deliver a finished product let alone a quality one
The funny thing is Concord was made by former Bungie devs the influence is pretty clear it's a Destiny clone. Bungie has terrible management so it won't be surprising if Marathon gets delayed or ends up being a dumpster fire like the original Destiny.
@@Legion849The original Destiny was a dumpster fire? That's news to me, i played up to TTK.
Scam games like those Digimon mobile Gacha games that can't survive two years...

W PS3/X360 Era.
I'm starting to wonder if ridiculously long dev time like 8 years just meant they scrapped everything and started from scratch a dozen times...
I think singularity and timeshift went through something similar, where most of the final game was actually rushed out within just a year, cods like bo3 suffered from that too
Got Killzone 2 today in the mail hype to play it again after so many years.
_"But game development is so haaaard!"_
_"But we don't have enough tiiiime!"_
_"Think of the developeeeers!"_
Many, many such cases.
It's not the devs fault necessarily. The higher ups aren't doing the jobs right (mostly)
Equality is more important in good gameplay than good gameplay after all
@deputyhobbs9683 😂😂😂😂 you killed me, 100% true
Gaming is actually going backwards.... what happened...
Actually, Gaming is doing fine, you just need to look a little bit deeper.
As AAA experiences a crash in slow motion, AA and Indie games are doing surprisingly well. Not to mention remasters of old faves.
Just AAA+ gaming crashing down, Indie games are now taking over
You're old and on valium

Killzone 2 looking pretty dope lmao
The only drawback to killzone 2 back in the day was that it consisted of 27 different shades of grey
and we were playing with the old crapy TV.
A lot of shooters that era were gray and had that awful sepia filter. Cod mw 1 and 2 are pretty colorless too
almost like they were trying to tell a gritty story
Between 27 shades of gray and modern day rainbow vomit, i would rather have my grays, thank you very much.

KZ2 looks really good for a 15 year old game

The wind effects are still incredible. Seeing the debri of the grenade explosion get carried away along with the sand on the ground was so cool to see.
@@itstommymate You trolling? kz2 came out in 2009
@@JayRM714 Yes I am
I like that you included KZ2 MP map footage to show this wasn't just single-player set piece stuff.
Back in the day I thought that was the default state for modern game technology. But really these things require dedicated and detail oriented developers making sure everything feels right. The same goes for Far Cry 2 versus modern Far Cry, such a big difference in how much interaction there is in the world.
Another issue is that so many games these days use pre-made game engines like UE5. If the engine the team is using doesn't have a certain feature, it simply doesn't get included in the game. While back in the day tech was more custom built to fit the game they were making.
i refuse to believe that concord toon more than 100mil to produce
Chad Killzone 2 vs Virgin Concord.
Killzone was a masterpiece concord looks like a cartoon !
A game made for 10 year-olds by 30 year-olds parroting the propaganda of 80 year-olds while having the emotional maturity of 2 year-olds.
@1:35 damn that's thier shotgun? It's weak, underpowered and no kick compared to any other game
This is has a very Crowbcat B4B vs L4D vibe.
18:31 the use of Gta The Ballad of Gay Tony pause theme is GENIUS
The only thing I didn't like about games in the PS3/360 era is how games were so grimmy, brownish... And now I don't like how cartoonish and colorful they look, like... Can't there be any balance?
Ratchet and Clank?
Tried garden warfare?
Team fortress 2 has the perfect balance for cartoon and bloody
There's Just Cause 2, which seamlessly blended different environmental terrains and locations together with bright, vibrant colors and insane draw distance fidelity.
3:21 that mop made by anti-matter
As someone who plays on Xbox, I'm glad Concord didn't come to our console. I also wish I could get a PS3 with PSREWIRED just so that I could play online.
As soon as I saw the thumbnail I immediately recognized Killzone 2 and thought, yup Concord is done for... Killzone 2 was way ahead of its time. 😂
1:15 Twinkle Toes Rocket Launcher 😂
From an older gamer, this is the kind of detail we appreciated more back in the day. All the little details that really showed the developers wanted you to have the most immersive experience that tech could provide. I remember spending hours replaying games like this just to see how much I could interact with the landscape and NPCs. I specifically remember wasting away summer days obsessing over Jumping Flash in such a manner.

There's also F.E.A.R. that looks really similar to them as well.
Now I will put killzone 2 in my list of inspiration games of my project "Suicide madness⛔ "
This project is based on the online cartoon series " madness combat "
It is a 3D online offline first-person shooter game with a cartoonish and realistic style.
The gameplay similar to killing floor 2 with an RPG system like Payday 2
Nice
Yooo mc less goooo
Look at the tonality of both games, Dark, gritty and dirty war setting. Then you have a brightly lit, upbeat environment also featuring guns and killing. Games have taken a very strange direction.
Soft and goofy
That's what happens when Minecraft, Overwatch and Fortnite make a gazillion dollars. Suits see this level of profits and that's what they think the majority want. Sony under Jim Ryan closed all innovative studios and they now make either AAA games or this Overwatch + Guardians of the Galaxy cartoonish clone thrash. No in-between
Yeah why did games put killing things in a happy setting, morbid as hell if you ask me
This is such a stupid point to make.
