@@EUROCORP2027 They are both different genres and Death Stranding is a single player game so player count doesn't matter that much. Also Death Stranding has a healthy player base unlike Concord which shows which game sucks and which don't.
That's just AAA games and all the overly corporate stuff though, the indie scene is thriving in terms of quality, granted this is thanks to most of these games being inspired by the great stuff from the past, but still.
Well we did get gta's. I remember we were playing ultima underworld and thinking what if we got to play in the "real" world avatar came from to the underworld as freely as we got to move in the underworld in 3d etc. Then we got ultima 9's tutorial section and ehh... But really a lot of it got delivered in the end. Its just that now the industry has lost visionaries, instead they think that they just need money.

As a curiosity, at the end of the development of Killzone 2, the developers of the game discovered that they only used 60% of the PS3. They use all the SPU (there are 6 SPUs), but not 100%. In Killzone 3 they don't use it at 100% either, according to the interviews they gave, they only managed to use 95%, admitting that there was room for improvement in anti-aliasing. Killzone 2 was set to be released in 2008, but Sony, seeing that there was a lot of competition, decided to delay the game until 2009 and also put more money into making it come out better. Killzone 2 came out very polished at its premiere.
I remember playing Killzone 2 on launch day. It blew my mind how good it looked and sounded. I honestly couldn’t believe graphics that good were coming from the PS3.
@@hectop9593 Yeah, it's called attitude and confidence, which these younger developers do not have. Just look at the behind the scenes of Gears of War (2005), and see how much Microsoft executives and management kept challenging Epic Games regarding advertising with the chainsaw, and how the producer of GoW did not back down or give up. Compare that to now, where a ton of the management and developers are such pushovers and lack any sort of self respect for their product and customers.
Someone said the robot looked like the Monsters Inc. power canister because they asked ChatGPT to come up with character designs and it took the first thing it came up for "robot vacuum."
@@RudoMike21 There were apparently "sources" who told UA-camrs it was even higher than 400 million. Could be the biggest videogame flop in history by far. I think an investigation is warranted. This is my first time seeing footage of the game and I had no idea it looked this bad. It looks like an indie game, or maybe AA with a budget of 10 million. If it's true that 400+ million was spent then I'm guessing there was some ENORMOUS levels of embezzlement going on.
@@0ne0fmany I think 400 mil is the maximum estimate. More reasonable estimate is around 200 mil but that doesn't change the fact that it's a huge budget sink regardless.
Reminder that the PS3 had a total of 512mb of ram (0.5gb), half of which was the VRAM. A PS5 has 16gb of RAM and an additional 512mb of RAM specifically set aside as an SSD cache. Killzone 2 did all of that on a fraction of the memory available.
ps3 OS memory footprint, which was always bloated vs 360, went down from 120MB to 50MB only in 2010, that makes all those PS3 games even more impressive
back then developers had a bit of knowledge about computers so they were able to perform these optimizations, nowadays if your code is bloated, you just throw a gorillion more RAM into it until it works.
@@Smougda funny you say that, because hao Chen of Bungie said the opposite back in Dec 2011 after reach and before destiny was announced 'We found out that even for 360, we were grossly underutilizing the CPU, mostly due to our multithreading design that doesn't allow us to spread the work and execute them in parallel. So we redid the whole architecture in the new multiplat engine' basically the 360 single thread was so good they didn't even need to do optimize their multithread like PS3 devs were forced to. the full interview is called 'all that glitters' on Game Developer. fun fact, the og Xbox had a dedicated sound processing chip so halo 2 could do all the audio for free, but for h3 almost 1 whole 360 CPU core had to be reserved just to do sound, and you get less variation in some audio like marine dialogue, if u play straight from disk and without the 360 hdd
12:00 One reason I prefer classes over heros/operators is that from a world standpoint they are just soldiers, nameless nobodies, they do not matter in the grand scheme of things. When you die, you don't respawn. *You are replaced.*
@@mobiusraptor7 I also think it adds to the tragedy of the conflict depicted. Battlefield 2042's lore was setting up a global conflict in a pre-apocalypse world, Imagine if we played as regular grunts and made all player deaths canon.
8 years and a hunded million dollars for a game that feels like it was made by 3 people in a single year for free. Yeah sure the gun animations are good but there is literally a minecraft mod that has the same level of animation quality, if not better. What the actual fuck man...
which is funny since killzone 2 was blasted for having doing "bullshots" aka fake game footage for the trailer... a disappointment in 2009 is seen as superior to a game made with double the budget... in 2024... where have we gone wrong?
I upvoted because this is my firstime getting to experience killzone... But this is the wrong way to compare what looks like a war/military game and then juxtaposing it with a colorful/family shooter. Obviously the realism of everything you showed off doesn't really matter for Concord it's a game meant to sell cosmetics on some level but that only happens if it's fun and it plays well... And despite the naysayers - it actually is fun and plays well
@@wombat7961 The naysayers being the whole terraqueous globe minus 600 people. Look, if it was actually fun it would have been played by more than 600 people, no matter all the problems it's got.
@@ArdaUThe fact that that sentence is reasonable is a good indication of what is actually wrong with the game. It was, from the beginning, a re-hash of already well-treaded, oversaturated markets.
Do not forget the most important advantage for Killzone 2: it does not require a constant internet connection and, therefore, it will never die. Concord's online requirement means it will not be playable within a year and a half; just like those suicidal arcades that Capcom (among others), used to make.
@@reknostarfox4690I guess they will try to maintain the game for a few months hoping for players (even making the game free to play) and shut-down the servers within 2025 because they didn't attract enough players.
God remember when there was criticism against "modern shooters" for being boring because they were too brown or grey? I'd take that over this SBI unicorn vomit any day 🤮
That was literally only the UA-camrs and streamers saying that. All the rest of us wanted immersive FPS games. They want more in game purchases and pretty colors to make content with.
@@RickNockNah that was a pretty common criticism in the mid to late 2000s, before the era of live streamers. I was pretty frequent on gaming message boards at the time and games being “too brown nowadays” was a common opinion. I remember when Uncharted was being promoted for PS3 one of the big selling points was how saturated and colorful it was compared to other popular games being released at the time.
@@PatrickArcato I know, MGS2 was super ahead of its time. When I saw a video that showed the attention to detail of the game, I was absolutely impressed.

@@ZoepX I partially agree, you know back then the Trailers used to look better than the game at last, obviously not all games, but nowadays if we *actually* compare Final release game vs final release like the video shows surely Killzone 2 solos, I'd like to have another example of FPS right now that'd be better than Concord but I haven't played them yet.
it requires talent, heart and soul to make a good game. Such people have been run out of the industry. Literally. Look up Amy Hennig at naughty dog and tell me otherwise. It's always interesting to see two games from different generations be broken down in to a spreadsheet and you tick off what they're able to do both from a gameplay perspective as well as from a technical perspective. You honestly have to go much further back to find a game which would give Concord a fighting chance to be comparable with.

If You've ever played TF2, You'd know how disappointing in terms of damage the Liberator rocket launcher is compared to stock weapon, but it comes NOWHERE near as close as Concord's rocket launcher is. What'd the point of it if it barely deals any damage? Isn't the thing about explosive weapons in games is that they do a lot of damage in one shot?
@@reknostarfox4690 This video is the first time I've seen the grenades from Concord and I could swear on my life that they've found a free explosion starter pack asset. One that basically gives You a barebones explosion code and animation but You'll have to do the rest to polish it out, to make explosion development faster than it would be had they started it from scratch. So in my understanding, these smartheads took this skeleton asset, tweaked some code here and there a little, replaced original animation with their own and called it finished. I've seen literal beginner devs making GMod mods with better explosions than what Concord has. Don't get me started on that short little growing floor plant section of the video, I literally made the "Was that the bite of 87!?" Markiplier face when I first saw it. They had the audacity to make a growing .jpeg vine texture for a plant thing. For a triple a game.
Concord is so lifeless and hollow. It just looks like generic assets thrown together with generic screen effects mashed together without any charm or character. Killzone 2 may have had a simple colour pallet but it was gritty and atmospheric as fuck. Concord feels like every modern videogame fused together.
1:47 I don't understand what is happening with Killzone 2's shotgun. It ejects the empty casing automatically, but then you still have to pump it to load the next round?? Usually the extracting/ejecting and the loading is done in the same cycle...
game devs are famous for not understanding how shotgun loading works in general. It looks like KZ2 devs got conflicting design notes about whether their SPAS-12 esque shotgun was semi-auto or pump-action.
@@Adrian_FahrenheitȚepeș Eh, the first Killzone is nowhere near as good and can be safely skipped. It's bland, boring, unpolished and ugly even by PS2 standards. The re-releases' HD coat doesn't help. You can tell that it was the product of an inexperienced team that bit off far more than they could chew. Remember when it was touted as a Halo killer? That never happened. The devs were however aware of the mistakes they had made and their shortcomings, which, together with a healthy cash infusion from Sony, allowed them to improve considerably during the development of Killzone 2.
I always thought killzone 2 and 3 were really impressive especially with the attention to detail for the time. The game got so much hate for not being the Halo killer which it was never ment to be.
Sony Exclusives have their occasional terrible game, such as No Man's Sky. The difference between NMS and Concord is that NMS failed due to being extremely ambitious, the marketing was inappropriate and the priec tag wasn't worth the game players were buying on release and has since redeemed itself. NMS wanted to be *the* next big innovation that would define games for years to come but had an extremely rough start due to many factors. Concord, on the other hand, was designed by a pie chart.
@@lambda760what's even sadder is that NMS still had passion, hence its eventual rise to greatness. What exactly are they going to do about Concord? What exactly is there to fix? There's not much to work with because unlike NMS there's no niche really being satisfied here. The vast majority of the people this game panders to either a) don't play this kind of game, or videogames in general or b) wouldn't like it because the game simply sucks in general.
The only things that modern games get better than old games is the sheer amount of settings customization and how good the controls feel (sometimes) Old games are superior in every other way, I just wish they often didn't feel so stiff and clunky to play at times. Its good to see the public start agreeing with me on seeing what old games are capable of, rather than insulting me for disliking their favorite multibillion dollar company

Software engineering as a whole used to have much smarter people than today. Look at Dennis Ritchie, Brian Kernighan, Ken Thompson, Linus Torvalds, etc. People back then built their own operating systems, libraries, languages and compilers. The best a "software engineer" can do today is javascript and some framework he got off github.

What's worse is that Concord runs on the Unreal Engine 5 which is (at the time of writing) the most cutting edge engine in terms of visual fidelity and somehow Killzone a game that came out fifteen years ago and uses a custom made engine looks miles better. Just goes to show that it doesn't matter if you have the best tools, if the one holding it doesn't give a damn the end result it's gonna be mediocre.
afterall the engine is quite irrelevant, you can make old engines look great with high resolution textures, but you can also make new engines look bad with low res/bad textures
@@BH4x0r this is true, but it's a crime to say UE5 doesn't look good when used properly. between the tech in it and the actual optimisation allowing for really pretty games, they still have zero excuse for how awful Concord looks aside from being plain lazy/incapable. even the tech demos look better than this.
Meanwhile, in Skyrim, that pack of wolves you offed on the way to Riverwood are still there when you walk by for weeks thereafter in game time. With a mod, the bodies actually begin to decay. This game's failure doesn't bode well for Marathon assuming it isn't delayed indefinitely and restarts development from the ground-up as a traditional single player FPS, or gets scrapped entirely. Then again, I wouldn't be shocked if they moved forward with their initial concept anyway because publishers refuse to take a fucking hint about the general public perception of these games, all they want to do now is scam a few whales, abandon the game, rinse and repeat instead of selling a game normal, sane people would enjoy and resonate with like they used to.
The funny thing is Concord was made by former Bungie devs the influence is pretty clear it's a Destiny clone. Bungie has terrible management so it won't be surprising if Marathon gets delayed or ends up being a dumpster fire like the original Destiny.
The wind effects are still incredible. Seeing the debri of the grenade explosion get carried away along with the sand on the ground was so cool to see.
@3:30, you can see exactly how much attention to detail there is. The first bullet misses the pallet after sliding BETWEEN the wooden planks. A split of no more than one inch, finely modelled into the hit box itself. That's dedication
I think singularity and timeshift went through something similar, where most of the final game was actually rushed out within just a year, cods like bo3 suffered from that too
Every weapon in concord sounds like a plasma nail gun . The weapons also same to lack power when impacting anything. The game, the weapon sounds and lack of detail are the perfect representation of what you'd expect the developers behind the game to look like.
I like that you included KZ2 MP map footage to show this wasn't just single-player set piece stuff. Back in the day I thought that was the default state for modern game technology. But really these things require dedicated and detail oriented developers making sure everything feels right. The same goes for Far Cry 2 versus modern Far Cry, such a big difference in how much interaction there is in the world. Another issue is that so many games these days use pre-made game engines like UE5. If the engine the team is using doesn't have a certain feature, it simply doesn't get included in the game. While back in the day tech was more custom built to fit the game they were making.
The Killzone series has a special place in my heart there was nothing like playing KZ2 or 3 with the sound all the way up it made you feel like you were really in a combat zone gives me nostalgia
I mean it's Killzone 2. To me it looks and feels better than most games. Both if it's time and now. It's a fantastic look at what game can push and what used to be expected.
Old Gen Developers: We desire for you to feel the darkness of war and like the sky is clawing at your soul. To feel the gruesome environment of war. New developers: We want you to choose the right outfit
New gen: we um want you to feel included and loved with these obviously very stereotypical happy characters who are excited to fight! We also want to make sure that players are so focused on how fat and black one of our heroes are that they forget about how little effort we put into the game! Equality is more important in good gameplay than good gameplay after all
i booted deep rock galactic to compare it with the gunner's "Hurricane" rocket launcher and even an indie company managed to make it better and plus the terrain is fully destructible too, you dont need to go back 15 years, just need to pick any indie game and it will wreck these AAA companies easily
The only thing I didn't like about games in the PS3/360 era is how games were so grimmy, brownish... And now I don't like how cartoonish and colorful they look, like... Can't there be any balance?
There's Just Cause 2, which seamlessly blended different environmental terrains and locations together with bright, vibrant colors and insane draw distance fidelity.

I mean fortnite runs on UE5 aswell and looks pretty awful aswell

@@BH4x0r this is true, but it's a crime to say UE5 doesn't look good when used properly. between the tech in it and the actual optimisation allowing for really pretty games, they still have zero excuse for how awful Concord looks aside from being plain lazy/incapable. even the tech demos look better than this.

reasons why i'm retro gaming now
Every weapon in concord sounds like a plasma nail gun .
Even the shooting in the classic versions of doom feels better than that...
The Killzone series has a special place in my heart there was nothing like playing KZ2 or 3 with the sound all the way up it made you feel like you were really in a combat zone gives me nostalgia
