What is it that makes the Y2K era of movies so compelling? Is it that unique 2000s fashion? Is it the leather? The harsh blond high lights? Maybe it's all the Lindsay Lohan.
    0:00 Intro
    1:25 2000s Movie Landscape

9:38 The Ring and 2000s Color
10:40 Conclusion, Why The 2000s Matter
For me, it's about the 2000s movies that raised me. This was the last era when an A-List actor or a hot vampire could sell a movie to the masses. The 2000s also mark the rumblings of the franchise box office dominance that became commonplace by the 2010s. Unlike now, every blockbuster during the 2000s didn't come from under the Disney umbrella. But the 2000s is when it started, and that's what's so compelling about the niche trends of this era.
In this video essay (or opinion piece), I try to shed light on all of the niche movie genres of the 2000s. It's a Y2K video essay, a video essay about filmmaking, a video essay about art, leather, and beach bods. What kinds of movies were coming out after Y2K? What genres existed from 2000-2009 that movie-goers don't see any more? Watch this and find out my take.
Video essay, movie analysis, film history, y2k aesthetic, 2000s nostalgia, 2000s trends, 2000s movies, y2k movies
Hope the YT algorithm likes this description.

How could I have forgotten spoof movies and white-lady-girl-boss movies?!
I think it was slightly into the 2010s, but I saw the Twilight spoof movie in theaters with my friends in high school. It's such a unique experience to see one in theaters. The audience feels permission to be loud and interact more than during regular movies. Ah the days

I'll admit, as a kid I really loved those dumb spoof movies. You're right, the theatre experience for them was way more of a hang out than anything else!

Also I find it fascinating that the 2000's were cashing in on the 70's the same way the 2010's was on the 80's.

2000s were great for movies both stand alone and franchises. Some of my personal favorites being Star Wars prequels, Benchwarmers, Superbad, Hot Rod, Accepted, The Matrix, Spiderman 1-3, Dodge Ball, Batman Begins, Dark Knight, The 40 year old virgin. The list goes on and on not even including Disney and Pixar movies

I know your channel is cinema focused, but I would love to also see/hear your thoughts about TV during the 2000s. Much of that was a huge influence for me growing up, and while it's different from film, it really does contain a familiar sort of aesthetic and tone.

Great suggestion! I probably spend more time watching TV than movies, and I think that the difference between the two is increasingly blurry.
With that said, I'd love to do a video on early reality TV from the 2000s😂 Also early single cam comedies like Malcolm In The Middle.

Looking back it’s actually kinda surprising how FEW “torture porn films” were big in the 2000’s. Like it seemed so genre defining because the media would constantly highlight these films for being so controversial but really you only got the saw franchise, the hostel franchise, and that one movie where the truck driver spends all his time harassing a bunch of kids for some reason. The rest were pretty typical slasher flicks, remakes of foreign films and ghost movies with a emo twist. Not a lot of on screen torturing going on.

and im not a huge movie buff but i miss that specifically campy or "corny" melodramatic dialogue particularly from star wars episode 3, my favorite, where i think it was typified. Im not ashamed to admit i love the sincerity to it. Hayden got memed on for being angsty and edgy and awkward, but I thought the performance was perfect, and there was no better casting imo. It might be nostalgia but i greatly prefer it to Kylo, and especially prefer it over the post-ironic and constantly sarcastic characters like the MCU has, where they try to be funny and dont take themselves seriously. While I enjoy that for everyday conversation, I actually miss it in my movies!

So the 00s were were made up of a few big trends and then many small trends. Two noticeable change I notice early on, is the decline in the Action Thriller genre that was a staple of 90s Films and the other being the death of the courtroom Drama trend of the 90s, mostly centring on John Grisham Novels.

Digital backlot was incredible - stuff like Captain Sky and the World of Tomorrow, Speed Racer, Sin City...
there were also those "old auteurs try digital for the first time and make some cheaper, experimental stuff that is disliked by the public, then loved 10 years later by a cult audience" movies. Stuff like Miami Vice by Mann, The things Schrader did, or Argento or De Palma... metaphysical, weird action films.
There was that "grindhouse" type cinema that was overtaken by the straight-to-video market and the SyFy channel and Asylum. That trend was interconnected with the throwback go the 70's thing. Things like Death Race reboot franchise, Tarantino and Rodriguez, all the different classic horror franchises getting reboots, exploitation revivals like Crank and other Neveldine and Taylor stuff.
Another genre of action was the EuropaCorp-like movies. Today it has been deformed into bad straight-to-video stuff with actors like Jaaon Statham (even though he still plays in larger movies)
Worldwide coming of age movies were popular among alternative communities, emos, scene kids, people into anime and forums... movies like the likes of Lukas Moodyson's, stuff like Suicide Room, Fish Tank, Lily Chou-Chou were popular and lived another life as gifs on forums full of teenagers... that's also were a lot of queer people were hanging around and it kinda bled over into 2010's with the festival-circuit queer dramas... movies like Blue is the Warmest Color, Mysterious Skin, Floating Skyscrapers....
Along these lines, there was the Japanese boom in interest among US audiences. Cellphones, anime, manga, games, all thing japanese was influencing a lot of Hollywood and with the rise of the Internet people were more into Japanese culture (lots of early youtube uploads were Niconico re-uplods, AMVs, gaming parodies focusing on Sega, Capcom, Konami, Sony and Nintendo franchises... all kinds of action shows for kids were also manga-inspired and even lots of brands like Marvel heavily tried to appeal to anime and manga fans.
Spy movies. No more words needed.

From what I researched, 20 years ago, 2002 alone had way too many sequels, with most of them having 2 in the title. And 2009 might've been the year animated movies peaked, but it was also the year movies based on kids shows peaked. Not just because there were so many of them, but because each of them are unique in completely different ways. Demonstrated in this playlist of reviews I made! Enjoy!

LMAO WTF are you talking about, Tom Cruise is the world's biggest movie star for 40 years and still on the top of the world. Tom has a worldwide box office of $12.1 billion without any help from the MCU.

I'm so sorry, I spent the 00s avoiding 00 movies because they were so triggering and pure rape culture. I scoured every movie before 2000 looking for something better
