  • As fans, we love to see an auteur director like James Cameron stop at nothing to achieve their vision. We want to see movies like Terminator, Titanic, and Aliens realized to their fullest potential. But even James Cameron can take his vision a step too far and almost end his directing career before it got off the ground. The Abyss was not only a massive undertaking by James Cameron, it almost cost him his life. But how exactly did The Abyss almost kill James Cameron? And how did The Abyss make it to the end of production?

Ed Harris almost drowned on this film too and has admitted it caused him to break down while driving off set and he had to pull over and cry to let out the stress...this movie was intense

Ed Harris’ near-drowning is actually more serious, because Cameron had more agency in being able to resurface - Ed Harris was totally reliant on safety divers (ultimately Al Giddings) .. unlike Cameron, Ed Harris had no ability to surface on his own during his incident

There was more to what happened to Cameron than that. The radio guy responsible for keeping comms open with the divers made a mistake and Cameron couldn't communicate his problem, only making his panic to get to the surface more serious.
On top of that, the pool was fresh water and within the first weeks of the shoot began to sprout algae blooms that murked the water. So they used a chlorine solution to clear it up, but the mix was too strong and several people dealt with burns and irriations during the shoot.

I LOVE this movie. It's absolutely bad-ass and so cool in every way. I actually prefer the extended edition, I think it's paints a more complete picture. Plus you get more giant waves lol.
The scene with Ed Harris reviving Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio is so incredibly intense and heartwrought. Really gets to me every time.

He still would have done practical effects regardless. When he did Titanic he used the same methods of flooding sets etc to get what he wanted.

We need a 4K Blu-ray release of The Abyss, with both the theatrical and the extended directors cut, I own both versions but they're only on DVD in low res 480p, this movie has been on my all time favorite sci-fi's ever since I first saw a copy of it on VHS in the early 90's at my local video store, the cover just intrigued me and when I first watched The Abyss it blew me away, is such a cinematic masterpiece.

@@Lamont580 Oh really, that's good to know, I've been really hoping for a HD or a Ultra HD release for over 15 years, as it's been almost 20 years since I last watched The Abyss, because I only have a low res DVD 480p and the transfer doesn't look the best, which the picture looks really washed out on DVD, I want to rewatch it on the best current 4K Blu-ray formats, finger's crossed James Cameron releases it very soon for movie collector's, with a new pristine picture transfer and a ton of special features.

I love this movie. It is such an intense thriller that you can see it multiple times and still be on the edge of your seat. The resuscitation scene is agonizing in the best way. However, this movie also drives me nuts. I love it. I love it so much. But the ending is terrible. It’s so unsatisfying and odd and just bad that I have spent years. Possible plural decades trying to figure out how to end it better and I cannot figure it out.

From multiple accounts, James Cameron was quite the asshole and dictator on set in the first half of his career. I forget in which movie this happened, but cast and crew came up with a name for his darker side, Mij (Jim backwards). And there was a t-shirt that cast and crew wore that said “You can't scare me-I work for James Cameron” during the shoot for another movie. I hope he's mellowed nowadays.

We need to talk about film budgets today. The Abyss had a budget between $40-75 million.
How do these CGI monstrosities get up to $200-300 million today?

    • @jasonblalock4429
      @jasonblalock4429 6 місяців тому +2

Inflation is why. $40 - $75 million in 1989 is worth between $100M - $200M today. Abyss was a very high-budget movie for its time. For that matter, the official most expensive films of the 80s - Roger Rabbit and Rambo III - both cost around $60M. So if the higher estimates of Abyss's budget are actually true, it would be the most expensive film of the decade.

I admit, I sniffed at The Terminater and Aliens when they came out. When folks "converted" me, I was eager to watch The Abyss in its theatrical run. Twice. It's hard to comprehend how impactful the production value of this action/sci-fi mash-up with gripping emotinal moments was. Cult classic, in its original run it didn't quite get the recognition it deserved. To this day, I guess most of my friends don't even know the film.

      THE TERMINATOR,

I'm not suggesting Cameron should be cancelled, but Joss Whedon's career has ended over FAR LESS! I'm not defending Whedon, but it's a well known secret that Cameron is BRUTAL to work for (as you can obviously see here).
Say what you will about Whedon, but to my knowledge he never almost KILLED someone.
No offense to any Cameron fans, but I think his INSANELY profitable AVATAR films are keeping him safe. As long as he keeps making $2billion+, Oscar winning movies for the Hollywood studios, he's gonna be well protected from cancel culture.
