The opto-mechanic switches are light powered switches. Meaning that the keyboard has to power the small laser for every single key on the keyboard. This would likely consume some battery, which is probably why they opted for the normal switches
Another reason, one that technically makes sense, is that the opto-mechanical switched are a huntsman thing. Only the huntsman lineup has the opto-mechanical keys. I have this keyboard because of a broken blackwidow v2 and I used it for 2 months... After a PC upgrade(whole new PC) and a firmware update my keyboard started to have double typing keys(chatter). After long support emails, they couldn't do anything because I already had a new keyboard from warranty. Well, I wanted to try the newish Windows 11 dynamic lightning and the only supported hardware I have is this keyboard, (I have mostly Logitech products nowadays). Removed the dust on it and tried it... Didn't worked... updated the firmware and WTF? They keyboard is working like a charm... I wonder how much time people like me struggled with chatter. I did try chatter software, it helped but wasn't perfect at all. I'll stick with logitech for the foreseeable future, anyway a 100$ logitech product = 300$ razer one. Edit: I have the yellow switches, not sure if it matters.
Optical switches use tiny LEDs that are firing at all times for switch actuation. Imagine that for battery life. You combine that with only getting 5 hours of battery life with a white LED setting and you're probably looking at 3 hours or less of battery life. As nice as it would be to have an optical wireless keyboard, a contact based switch just makes more sense.
The reason is cuz razer's blackwidow lineup has always had the traditional switches, the optomechanical switches are part of the huntsman lineup. Is like saying that the wrist rest doesnt come in the huntsman keyboards, its just not part of the lineup
Optical switches consume a lot more energy than regular switches. If you go wireless, you want to save as much as you can, or deal with poor battery time.
It is not a good idea to make a wireless optical swtich keyboard. Technically the optical switch is turned on all the time, means it consumes a lot more power than the troditional switches. Batterylife will be a huge issue .
Hey RandomFrankP, big fan of ur videos. I was just wondering why did you never make a video on the Razer Black Widow V3 TKL?? I really wanted to buy one but unlike almost all other razer products you didn’t make a review for this one :(
A razer rep explained in a reddit AMA why opto-mechanical switches won’t be in wireless for a while. The switches would be “always on” due to the light beams in each switch that break when the switch is pressed, leading to abysmal battery life with current mainstream battery technology.
Swapped my Huntsman Elite for this! some differences are the non RGB wrists rest in the V3. and didn't have the new purple faster switches (not noticable). But this is bluetooth which I was looking for. I noticed that the Huntsman had higher quality keys the feel(touch) was different it felt more luxurious. V3 feels more grainy. Go for Elite which is cheaper, if you dont mind the wire.
Im pretty sure the reason they didnt put their opto-mech keyswitches in the blackwidow is because of the blackwidow brand, the huntsman brand is opto-mech. Just a thought!
I don't really like Keyboard reviews on youtube, but this is one is very good (not too long and dwell on certain aspects) and definitely helped me when I was actually thinking of buying this Razer Keyboard. And my verdict is not to buy this keyboard nor the Logitech G15 (or TKL version). Both carried Premium Price tag but just don't feel completely premium. Let's hope for better new future products.
Love how their product page on their website shows the F keys having secondary media functions (like play, pause, skip, go back, volume up and down and mute) but the product itself doesn't. Is that false advertising? Fraud? I bought this keyboard under the expectation that it had all of the features I was looking for, and their support just told me I should've checked UA-cam reviews first, like that is a requirement to buying a product. I went to Razer's website. You'd think their photos would be accurate on their own website.

I just bought the black widow Elite not long ago, and this things decides to release right after I’ve bought it
5:01 thank me later
Razer didn't include optomechnical switches because blackwidow keyboards are meant to have the green ones
5:01 is the keyboard sound test
Thanks for your honest review, I ended up getting the Corsair K100.
Razer keeps releasing expensive stuff.
Hehe he that's cheap, you've never built a keyboard have you
@@excaliber2845 it might be cheap for you but it isn't for us people who have low source of income.
@@nautilus5288 oh I'm trulely sorry for coming a cross like a asshole, didn't mean it like that, if you want a cheap keyboard that's good get the gk61 barebones (doesn't come with switches or Keycaps)
Then online order some novelkey silk yellow switches then choose a keycapset you want, the whole thing should cost around 80 or 70 if you get cheap Keycaps but if you want one better Keycaps it'll cost 100
I hope this is in your budget if not tell me I can help you find 1
@@excaliber2845 we never talked about custom keyboards. It's about razer releasing expensive products that doesn't last very long.
@@nautilus5288 I wouldn't call that keyboard a custom
A good honest review, love to see it
Me watching with my broke ass 50 dollar mouse and 50 dollar keyboard:
*hmm interesting...*
100 dollars seems cheap to u lol
arCa it pretty much is tbh
arCa it is for a mouse and keyboard
I want my orange switches🥺🥺🥺
i love your videos your my favorite tech youtube please never stop uploading
Haven't watched it yet but thought its time for a comment: Hi!
Look how big that thing is, it can easily carry 10000Mah battery or so
All I want is a keyboard with a touchscreen on it
The reason is cuz razer's blackwidow lineup has always had the traditional switches, the optomechanical switches are part of the huntsman lineup. Is like saying that the wrist rest doesnt come in the huntsman keyboards, its just not part of the lineup
You are getting your own Razer customs thing? Nice job!
Thanks for the review frank
one disadvantage of wireless keyboard is that you can't assess the bios without plugging in a proper usb keyboard.
Brightmess on the 3rd one XD 8:43
Love the video, can you do the black shark wireless pro next?
Nari ultimate is way better
0:05, nice save
I reaaalyyy loooooove your videos. KEEP IT UP!!!!
Solid review Frank!!!!
Optimechanical switches use more power to shine a beam of light then traditional mechanical switches use
Love you man your the best UA-camr
Swapped my Huntsman Elite for this! some differences are the non RGB wrists rest in the V3. and didn't have the new purple faster switches (not noticable). But this is bluetooth which I was looking for. I noticed that the Huntsman had higher quality keys the feel(touch) was different it felt more luxurious. V3 feels more grainy. Go for Elite which is cheaper, if you dont mind the wire.
Do you still use the V3? I'm debating if I should get it. Do you think it's worth $140? That's the going price right now.
Im pretty sure the reason they didnt put their opto-mech keyswitches in the blackwidow is because of the blackwidow brand, the huntsman brand is opto-mech. Just a thought!
I was happy to pick this up on sale.
WAIT A SECOND !!!! on 7:20 we can see you have two viper ultimates or it's just my imagination ?
You'd think their photos would be accurate on their own website.
quartz colour gonna look nice
The blackwidow lineup is their standard switches. the huntsman has a different name because it is the highest quality of their keyboards.
Hi bro love from India 🇮🇳
Hey Frank, nice video! I recently switch from a g915 to this keyboard and as for range I’m getting almost as far 25 feet and i can probably go further if my living room was longer. I did notice the keyboard range took a hit when the dongle is plug into a USB 2.0 port or in Bluetooth.
they can't put the optical switches in a wireless keyboard because they have a beam of light in them that are constantly on which would drain the battery and it would last like an hour
makes sense.
Please tell me which is better Razer BlackWidow V3 (NON PRO) or Razer Huntsman Elite? What would you choose from your experience?
all i do is make typos on this keyboard. i've literally never had that problem before on any brand or type of keyboard. i am returning this thing tomorrow!
what caused the Typos? did you try O-Rings? because I just got this today
frankp would u prefer a normal BlackWidow, BlackWidow Elite, or this?
