When I see people complaining about the power button at the bottom, the most common rebuttal I see is "This isn't a Windows machine. You don't need to turn of a Mac." That's not a bad question - when was the last time you turned off a Mac? I haven't turned off any of my Macs...because I don't have one, lol.

@@VincentGroenewold Putting it at the back above the ports would've been a less annoying choice, that's for sure! Knowing Apple, they'd still probably make it embedded for "keeping the design seamless", lol.
I don't turn off my Windows home made desktop machine either (which you can't do with Apple BTW). But I don't download crappy software and have properly sized the machine for what I use it for (working remotely, photo processing, light video processing) My wife uses a $175 mini-pc that works fine for her. Again, she never turns it off because she doesn't download crappy software. And there were a TON of choices, not .... 1. Both are essentially noiseless. All of this fascination about having the 'best' or the 'smallest' is just idiotic. As long as it works for what it is intended to do, that's all that matters. What I did get out of this is I don't need to spend $600 when $175 will work.
The base Mac mini is an amazing value. On the PC side, this mini-PC factor has been very popular since the Intel NUC came out in 2013, and has since grown into a huge category from many manufacturers. Even with the expensive upgrades, the Mac mini is in the same ballpark pricewise as high end mini-PCs from no-name manufacturers.
I can imagine this is the computer I would buy my kid for his 12th birthday. Not to much for gaming, great for work + blends into the environment perfectly.
I can’t wait for my mini to come. I also bought one for my dad to fit on his cluttered desk. I know his desk is messy, but he loves it, and the mini saves a lot of space, so he loves it too. I don’t care about the power button; in fact, I hate the idea of shutting down the computer. So, I love it. It’s just a tool, and you can choose whatever you want as long as you can afford it.
I’m incredibly impressed with the base model Mac Mini. You can honestly solve the storage issue by using external drives or even waiting until someone develops a base station for it that has expandable storage that would also bring back ports like usb A and an sd card slot. I’m still rocking my M1 Pro 14” MacBook Pro and I’m considering upgrading to the new M4 Pro model.
I agree. Best bang you'll ever get for the buck! I also waited. I have an M1 MacBook Pro. I just ordered the new iMac M4 $1699. model. Comes tomorrow. Wish they had made the screen bigger. But all in all a very good upgrade.
Moving the power button to the bottom back corner is what allowed them to shrink it! Seriously, Mini + portable folding monitor = serious mobile editing power

I own and use the magic mouse (come on, Apple, give it USB-C, it's my last lightning device!) and never has the port on the bottom been a problem, I was never left with an unusable mouse. The battery lasts long enough that you have ample time to charge it at some point when you're not using it, before it's actually dead. You also shouldn't run your lithium batteries dead; there's a reason you get a warning at 20% on your phone and the icon becomes red, and it's not to protect you from having a dead phone (that 20% can last a good while, for the bare necessities), but to protect the battery from losing capacity.
This is a genuinely good machine, though. Seriously. The only thing wrong with it is the absurdly expensive upgrades, and Marques clearly stated that it's the best deal for a _base model._

I rather carry an Air if I needed portability. No reason to lug this around unless you’re a video editor and always end up at a workstation. Even then. I’d pay the extra for a crispy MacBook Pro Display, speakers, etc.
Like others in this thread I’m genuinely curious what’s the use case for this Mac. I have a pc and a MacBook, they both excel in their domains. Getting a Mac mini is like getting the disadvantages of both a pc and a MacBook without getting any of their advantages
Apple missed the opportunity to "discontinue" the Mac Mini and call this the Mac Nano. They haven't had any products with that name since the final iPod nano in 2012. They could have brought out some nostalgia with that name.
They already have the iPad mini, though. They probably want to use the same word across their product lines to describe their entry-level models. And since all their previous models were called mini, even when they changed the dimensions in 2010, it's best they just stick with it. After all, while the new model is smaller in width and length, it's bigger in height.

I wonder if there'll be a Mac Studio redesign. The previous Mac Mini had the same size as the current Mac Studio, but it was shorter. Now, the Mac Mini is smaller and taller.
I doubt it since most of the area increase is taken up by the dual fan + heatsink required to house an Ultra. They won't shrink down the PSU either. The existing mac mini already had a bunch of empty space inside of it due to the transition to all soldered storage and lower power requirements. The studio doesn't have any empty space and the new chips keep the same power envelopes. Besides, the studio is a relatively new design whereas the old mini used a chassis that was designed back when steve jobs was still alive.
I've got a M2 Pro Mac mini, best computer I've bought, handles all my editing and will be the next Mac I get. Very tempted to ditch my MacBook and run a Mac mini as a portable device for when I go to the office.
The power button is not a problem. I never switch off my macbook. With the new CPUS you can put them to sleep with super low consumption. I love it connected to a studio display. It works like magic. But you are right. The placement of the button is a bit insane.
Not a Mac user but from what I've seen online, people rarely ever turn their Macs off just opting to put them to sleep. They mostly use them as mini servers but eh, Apple be Apple.
I love MKBHD and his videos. I have no intentions of buying a Mac Mini or a new computer or even ANY tech at the moment but for some reason I’m going to still watch every single video. Why is that? Haha. I’m not complaining but I just wish I could gain this “superpower.”

The baseline model is great value for money, but I wouldn't go as far to say that this Mac Mini is unmatched as said at 2:45 . There are tiny pc's, just as small or within a few centimetes left or right, that perform similarly. You have things like the Beelink SER9 which is in a similar performance class, or one of the many Minisforum tiny pc's. Those have (as far as I know off) yet to be upgraded with the latest generation AMD Ryzen CPU's (which are already in that Beelink), but both are options. Still, the Mac Mini is a great value, but so are some of the others.
The Mac mini will be more thermal efficient than any of those options. It's just the way ARM-based architecture works. It runs cooler, faster and more efficiently because the whole computer is on a single chip. Also, Mac build quality trumps your listed options. As someone who mass-deploys Beelink devices as SNMP monitors at their job, I can attest that they have an extremely high failure rate: about 40% within two years. An average lifespan of under two years in the field is pathetic. They're made with generic hardware, the RAM/SSD modules often have Chinese characters written on them and no manufacturer info. Those computers aren't even in the same league as a Mac mini. You get what you pay for.
Really like what Apple has become in the computer space. They're actual one of the best budget options now. The M1 Macbook Air absolutely changed the game
Can't believe I'm even saying this, but this is by far the best computer I've seen release in regards to price to performance and sheer engineering.. Smokes the Windows PC counterparts in the same price bracket. Best of all, it's so small it can virtually be taken anywhere. The first time Apple has convinced me into buying one of their products.

The power button placement forces you to lift the Mini making it an unstable base and a subconscious reminder not to put things on it.
You’re giving incredible credit to the designers
@@06howea1it’s apple designers… so if anyone were to get the credit it would be them probably😅
the power button theory is plain and simple (just like apples design in general) ,hide it away for better looks

Perhaps it is so small that was the best place for it. Not much room.
Outside of that I think you are reaching. I give it a 3.14% probability you are correct. I pulled that number from me arse.
Watch an Apple employee see it, and use this an excuse, ha. Maybe you should go into marketing.
When I see people complaining about the power button at the bottom, the most common rebuttal I see is "This isn't a Windows machine. You don't need to turn of a Mac."
That's not a bad question - when was the last time you turned off a Mac? I haven't turned off any of my Macs...because I don't have one, lol.
You can also shut it down from the menu like most windows and other OS users do. It’s annoying in the rare case you have to manually power it down, but not the biggest dealbreaker in the world
@@remixisthis Is it necessary though. Even if I don't use it often, the times I do use it, it's annoying and even more so because someone deliberately designed it like that.
@@remixisthis Yeah, it isn't a dealbreaker at all.
But I don't download crappy software and have properly sized the machine for what I use it for (working remotely, photo processing, light video processing)
My wife uses a $175 mini-pc that works fine for her.
Only one way to see this button make sense if You stick velcro on top, and you always stick this Mac under your desk hidden.
Or velcro it to the back of a monitor to minimize cable clutter. That's what I'm planning.
@@mllarson that's such a good idea 👏
I'm fine with where the button is, but I agree this is a great idea.
Just turn it upside down?
@@3f_18 I don't see any vents at the top, so this might be the best idea - you get better aiflow too!
Hi, annoying controversial feature Apple guy here. Thanks for finally appreciating me, Marques!
I am annoyed by your comment. Well played, sir. Bravo!😂
But all in all a very good upgrade.
yes I agree with you .. 32 inches would have been great!!!!
Moving the power button to the bottom back corner is what allowed them to shrink it!
Seriously, Mini + portable folding monitor = serious mobile editing power
That transition at @5:47 is sick!
Yeah
I love Marques's editing so much that I (almost) never find editing errors. Today I found one and want to point it out just for the sake of being super picky. At 8:37 there is a weird audio clipping at the transition.
That's all, folks. I'll probably watch another hundred videos before catching any editing mistakes so good job
Edit: It clips again at 10:29
It’s cool that you can bring your desktop around. I can use my personal desktop at work, just by connecting it to the dock.
I'm thinking about using it for mobile DJ events. It's small enough to transport and I can add a larger monitor than any laptop screen available at a cheaper price. Tempting......
@@BoomDocs14K I'm sitting here considering the same thing! This would fit nicely in my road case.
That sounds like a good idea that is absolutely not a great idea
@@simonmaduxx6777 In my opinion, as long as protective shockproof cases are used, it will work flawlessly. No different than transporting a laptop or other professional gear (in my case...Pro DJ Gear).
Why not a laptop? No need to have a mains supply nearby.
That subtle flex about apple having a dedicated engineer to push for an annoying feature, when he has a whole team for his Panels app. MKHB is on another level. 💀👍
The only innovation Apple did this year: made a Mac mini a bit more mini and everyone is so wow about it.
i'm so excited to get this as my first macOS device.
I have a BeeLink Ser9 and have on order the new base model m4 mac mini and both are the same exact size and equivalent in power for both widows and mac users on one desk and i love it.

Definitely considering this for my home desktop
My Mac minis (2018 and M2 Pro) are easily my best purchases, ever.
Windows has mini pcs too, but if you can use Mac this is easily the best value power wise (not storage or ram which is sadly what most people utilize)
Hearing a non-dev endorse a base model computer for dev work without knowing their workload in the slightest is a ridiculous take
I wonder who will be the first to make a mod that moves the power button to the top?

The Power Mac M4 Cube is BACK!
Lightning port on the bottom of an exclusively-rechargeable mouse is the GOAT of terrible designs.
@@houserhythm Quit glazing Apple
Marques has fully sold out to Apple and he’s not even hiding it anymore.
This is a genuinely good machine, though. Seriously. The only thing wrong with it is the absurdly expensive upgrades, and Marques clearly stated that it's the best deal for a _base model._
Is there *anything* he said which is not a fact?
Apple's M-series just keeps raising the bar!
The power button on the bottom is so Apple. Ha
Bro probably never heard about Intel or AMD NUC and what's more, in devices from AMD or Intel, I can easily change the RAM, hard drive (sometimes even two), processor, wifi card or connect an external GPU. And I can easily disassemble them, clean them and service them. Please Give Me A Break

@@CreativePublisher they are fragile + expensive and compared to mac mini a little slow
The power button placement is just perfect. Easy accessible when you need it, literally invisible when you don’t need it!!❤

I wonder if there'll be a Mac Studio redesign. The previous Mac Mini had the same size as the current Mac Studio, but it was shorter. Now, the Mac Mini is smaller and taller.
I think the only problem would be that they’d have to cut down on the rear IO as it already takes up all of the horizontal space on the Studio
@@JoshCarterWeb Apple would probably remove the USB-A ports for that new design.

The most obvious use case is for Vision Pro users who don’t need a monitor at all! I do all my music with it on Logic.
Also get a NAS box or USB-C external storage if you need more than 256 GB of storage. It's cheaper and you don't see any performance hits. Trust me as I've been an IT Admin for 28 years now. I know a thing or two about technology.
This could be the Apple TV replacement that we all wanted - apple arcade games in 4k 120? Yes please
Yes! My thoughts exactly!
