The Go-Go's were punk then Belinda then went solo in the late ,80'd this is from her second album Heaven on earth you check out Circle in the sand, I get weak, Since you've gone, Stuff and Nonsense, Leave s light on, and Summer rain
The 80ies, where they still had recognizable bass lines, key changes and generally great songwriting! This song is from her 1987 album. Belinda was big from 1987 to the mid nineties - and she was my teenage love, I fell for her vocal fry and the aching sound in her voice. Next: „La Luna“ or „Summer Rain“!
Few 80s anthems have lived on like this one. One of the most memorable songs of the 1980s. You could not escape the song in the late 80s and I still hear it all the time on TV at the stores. Between the Go-Go's and her solo hits she is constantly being played everywhere. Internationally she's even more popular she has had 26 solo international hits! Her solo career was huge too in the USA too, even having more hits than the GoGos. Some people get it all
The Go-Go's are one of the best bands ever. Belinda, was the lead singer and her solo work is excellent. Check out "Mad About You", "Circle in the Sand". The Go-Go's went from nothing to huge in such a short period of time and the success, drugs and everything else that came with it took its toll. They broke up and Belinda went solo, as did Jane Weiland. But they are back together and touring.
I think of more than just love with this song. “In this world, we’re just beginning to understand the miracle of living…. they say in heaven love comes first. We’ll make heaven a place on Earth.” I imagine someone who’s been afraid to explore what she’s capable of, what we as a society are capable of. What a tremendous ambition: to put love first and make Earth be like Heaven.
Belinda Carlisle's solo work is pure pop perfection!! You will also want to check out "Mad About You", "I Get Weak", "Circle in the Sand", "Leave a Light On", "Summer Rain" and "Live Your Life Be Free" (just to name a few!!)
This is definitely 80s pop canon, one of the most iconic songs and videos of the era; and it's an example of the wave of 80s artists to have solo careers after being known for being in a band.
Belinda had a huge solo career, with this being her signature song. It was everywhere in the late 80s, you could not escape it. This particular album had a couple other big hits too, “I Get Weak” and “Circle in the Sand.” To this day, she still tours both as a solo artist and with the Go-Go’s.
The Go-Go's are not broken up (yay) and they were finally inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last year. They had long deserved that honor, they were the first all female band to perform their own songs, playing their own instruments and they are still absolutely one of the best and most fun bands to see live in concert 🔥
Belinda is my favorite female artist of all time. I have loved her and her music for decades, I own one copy of Playboy magazine and she's the centerfold. Great reaction and one of my favorite songs! I was 12 when this came out in 1997! The GoGos reformed in 1999 and she still performs with them and solo.
The go go's split back in 1985. Belinda went solo and had her first hit with mad about you a year later. The gogo's reunited in the early 90's and are still together, having been inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame!
Belinda Caralisle has so many great songs like the obvious hit songs but also many great gems that never got played on the radio especially in the States. Please react to these great songs that never got their fair share of fame "California", "Big Scary Animal", "In Too Deep", "Do You Feel Like I Feel" etc.
One of my fav artists. She still tours and I have seen her live many times. Summer Rain is one of my favs of hers and shows a more vocal range that Heaven is a place on earth
The Go Go's barely scraped into the UK charts but this was a huge number one in the UK starting a successful solo career for her. Late eighties early nineties. Much love from England 🏴
I remember seeing this video at my friend's house before we left for school. I swear I couldn't get Belinda Carlisle out of my mind that day! She ruined my whole concentration for the day. 😂
The last Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted The Go-Go's, Tina Turner as a solo performer, and Carol King. The Go-Go's performed, but it's the absolutely haunting rendition of Carole King's "Will you still love me, tomorrow?" is well worth a watch
I've been waiting a long time for you to discover this beautiful gem of a song! One small note, the title is Heaven is a Place on Earth. This was a #1 single off her 2nd solo album, also called Heaven is a Place on Earth released in 1987. She had a very successful solo career after the Go-Go's broke up and in my opinion is one of the most underrated singers ever. The man who appears with her in the video is her actual husband, who also appeared with her in the video for the song Mad About You, her first solo single off her first solo album, Belinda. As far why the Go-Go's broke up, it was the usual thing that happens to a lot of bands, egos got in the way, different members wanted to do different things, and no small amount of drug abuse. They have reunited and broken a couple more times but now occasionally put on a few shows. I haven't seen them together in decades but I did catch Belinda by herself at the Minnesota State Fair a few years ago. For some other great songs from her solo career, I suggest the afore-mentioned Mad About You, Circle in the Sand, I Feel the Magic, Summer Rain, La Luna, Little Black Book, Nobody Owns Me, Do You Feel Like I feel, (We Want) the Same Thing, Runaway Horses, In Too Deep, You're Nothing Without Me, I Plead Insanity, Tell Me, One With You, California, A Woman and a Man, and Always Breaking My Heart.
Great song, love her voice. This brings back great memories for me of the 80s. For more of her solo songs I would recommend both "Circle in the sand" and "Leave a light on for me".
Great reaction. Another Go Gos member Jane Wiedlin has a couple of great solo songs from the 80s as well. "Rush hour" "Blue Kiss" and her great duet with New Wave brother duo Sparks called" Cool Places" 😀
Belinda was so classy and in an interview said she wanted to experiment with key board and other sounds beyond the go go guitar sound and she did even tnough its a drum machine on the record.
This song brings back a great memory….this song was playing at a roller skating rink one night and there was this girl I liked and I finally built up enough courage to talk to her as this song was playing. Magical moment. Thanks for reacting to it!
I laughed out loud when you mentioned her sounding a bit punk because the Go-Go's actually started out as a punk band before realizing they had to move to pop to actually break. There was a TV show called "Behind the Music" that did an hour on the band, how they formed, and why they broke up. Turns out the girls were just as into drugs as sex as the guys were. The guitarist Jany Weiland is actually a dominatrix now. Definitely worth a watch. You could have a lot of fun and get very educated by reacting to episodes of that show. Would answer a lot of questions about a lot of bands I've heard you bring up during various reaction videos you've done.
The Go-Go's still tour... they played a couple months ago with Blondie's drummer, Clem Burke (their drummer was recovering from an injury). Belinda Carlisle still looks magnificent in her 60s!
The Go Go's are pretty much back together. They have been for a while, as they also do their solo stuff in between. And the Go-Go's did start off as a punk band back in the late 70's. Love the two of you. Always fun reactions.
Such a beautiful song Belinda has alot of great songs like Mad About You, I Feel The Magic, I Get Weak, Circle In The Sand, Leave A Light On, Summer Rain, We Want The Same Thing
Whenever I hear this song, I think of the Black Mirror episode "San Junipero" -- you guys should check out that show. Each episode is its own story and it is a parable of how technology (taken to extremes) can affect our lives,
Before The Gogos, Belinda was briefly a member of the LA punk band, The Germs and was called Dottie Danger. Pat Smear of Nirvana and the Foo Fighters was also in the Germs.
"Heaven Is a Place On Earth" peaked @ #1 for 1 week on Dec. 5, 1987 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was Carlisle's 2nd Top 10 since she launched her solo career after The Go-Go's disbanded. Eventually. between 1986 -1991, she will chart 9 singles in the Hot 100, featuring 4 Top 10 titles including this #1. This video was directed by Diane Keaton; male lover in video is Belinda's real-life husband, Morgan Mason, son of the late actor James Mason. Carlisle was Grammy nominated for a Best Female Pop vocal but lost to Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)". Other nominees: Carly Simon (Coming Round Again LP), Barbra Streisand (One Voice LP) and Suzanne Vega (Luka).
I saw the Go-Go's on their big US tour at Billy Bob's Texas in a sold out standing room only show. I was amazed they all played instruments professionally and sounded equally as good as studio. Much to my girlfriend's chagrin I got right up front to see Carlisle who definitely had that "it" factor and plenty of voice talent.
I've been a little confused by all the calls for "Mad About You" since I've never heard of it, but apparently it was only a hit in the US. In the UK, her Greatest Hits album (which got to No. 1) didn't even include it.
*Also as a hard rock fan I actually also listened to Belinda Carlisle one or the other time back then, she reflects the full joy of life in her songs.*
No Canadian triad. Oh, well, because it's Belinda, I forgive you. She had a TON of hits in the late 80s, early 90s. (This one was from 1987). You should also check out "I Get Weak", "Mad About You", "Circle in the Sand," "Leave a Light On", and my personal favorite, "Summer Rain". Thanks for reacting! I love Female Friday! To answer your question - the GoGos broke up in 1985 due to "creative differences", and several members were having drug problems. They have gotten together several times since then to do reunion shows, and even did a reunion tour in 2021 (with Billy Idol!), which coincided with their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Behind did quite well when she went solo. "Circles In The Sand" is another one by Belinda that did well. #4 in The UK 🇬🇧 & #7 8n The US 🇺🇸, released in 1988
I've mentioned before that I had a huge crush on her. And just because an artist does something as a solo artis doesn't mean the band broke up. They still played together after she did her solo stuff too. Often artists will do some solo stuff during a hiatus when the band wants to take a break. She put out several albums on her own that did quite well.
Well. I’m a fan of the Smithereens. And there’s a song called “Blue Period” that is almost a duet with Pat DiNizio (the Smithereens’ lead singer, RIP) and Belinda Carlisle. The song really shows her beautiful voice as it blends with Pat’s. It’s a great song, and it’ll hopefully make you want to hear more Smithereens. 💜💜💜

Her album after this, Runaway Horses, is one of the most underrated albums of the 80s. Actress Diane Keaton directed this video. Jay’s been doing bicep curls and it shows.
Gotta go with her first solo hit, Mad About You. Much like Our Lips Are Sealed, that song is also one you need to hear on a summer drive, windows rolled down, radio turned up.

The most recognizable vibrato in the history of modern music.
I would say Stevie Nicks and Grace Slick vibrato's are more recognizable, but Belinda is up there too....
My favorite
P.S. Brandi Carlile, "The Story". Please. You'll be blown away.
Belinda Carlisle is AMAZING. Please react to more of her solo songs.
I remember seeing this as a little kid and thinking she was the most beautiful woman in the world.
John Farnham singing Help, live with the Melbourne symphony orchestra, you’ll be impressed.
I had no idea Belinda Carlisle was even in the Go-Go's LOL
Liked this video , Belinda Carlisle still tours in the UK and I saw her recently at an 80s concert with some other stars from that time.
Love the Smithereens. Saw them live in 1990. Have not heard this song so will go listen to it. RIP Pat.
Wife here..Was fortunate enough to see the Smithereens in concert in the very late 90's..Love "Blue Period"!!
@@kbusby4824 @eric smith After being a fan for many years, I finally saw them live for the first time in 2009 at the Stone Pony. Why I never saw them earlier? 🤷🏼♀️ Pretty sure “Blue Period” is my favorite Smithereens song. Pat’s voice is so great. 💜
I agree! Love The Smithereens.
Finally saw the Smithereens a couple years ago, Marshall Crenshaw on vocals.
RIP Pat
Love the mad respect these young folks give the artists from my time, when I was their age.
One of my favorite 80s jams ever! I'd like to throw my hat in on "Lost on You" by LP (live version is a must) for Female Friday. She will definitely give J Amy Winehouse vibes. Keep up the great work!
"Mad About You" !
She is one of the most beautiful divas of all time belinda is a true legend of the 80s will you please react to batdance by prince please that's my request Tommy click
I was so in love with Belinda in the 80's
