FATHER-IN-LAW TILED SHOWER AND IT FAILED!!!

  • Too often I see family members, friends, or neighbors try to do tile work and fail. They may have good intentions but they don't have the knowledge or skill to build a properly waterproof tiled shower. Homeowners who need tile work done are often in a bind because they don't have the money to pay for a qualified tile installer. The result is usually a disaster, and can lead to water damage, mold, and dry rot causing thousands more in damage.
To see more videos on how to properly tile a shower, floor, or backsplash subscribe and turn on your notifications. I upload videos every Thursday at 6pm. Usually a tutorial on how to properly tile a shower, or a video showing what happens and what went wrong on a bad installation. I even show my own company's issues and problems that arise since I know it will help others.
My goal is to provide educational, motivational, and entertaining videos that help others get better and improve their lives through building and creating.

When I was a kid, my dad rewired most of the electrical in our 100 y/o house (in a small town) from 'knob&post' .... then had the inspector come out. Inspector said, ".... you must not be an electrician from around here ... you did everything by the books, no cut corners ... have you thought of doing this for a living?" LOL! Dad had done some electrical work in the military ... so there's that ..... DIY'ers sometimes get their experience from other places besides "the industry."

If money is the real issue, you can reuse the tiles since they come off so easy. Scrape of the mastic and if needed, soak them up and wash off the rest of mastic with a sponge. Add hardie where needed and then redguard for waterproof. Buy a finer blade for cleaner cuts and disc-sander to buff off the rough spots. If you dont use shluter trim, it will cost under $250 with proper thinset.

I wonder if a major cause of these kinds of mistakes is that people assume the water won't go through the grout, and because the tiles are impermeable, they think it kind of works like the inside of a porcelain bathtub. They don't realize that even showers aren't actually 100% waterproof, they just minimize the total amount of water that goes in and have a good system for drainage and wicking.

I was in Lowes last night in the tile area. A guy told the clerk that he was doing a shower and wanted to know what to use on the pebbles he was buying for the shower floor. That mastic was grabbed. I asked if the guy knew what he was doing. He said "Yes." I then asked him why he thought it was acceptable to use mastic in a wet area. The customer in the bright orange construction shirt said that he was doing his own shower and didn't care. The clerk later approached me and said that he would never recommend that for wet areas. I told him that he almost helped a guy that doesn't know what he's doing ruin someone's shower.
