Another great video, cheers mate. PS. I dunno if you remember when I got all pi**ed off like 6 or 8 months ago about Resolve literally just wiping my timeline clean, even though I'd saved it and everything correctly... but when I opened it, it was like the first thing I'd done and then nothing after that. Well I think I've worked out what that is: I think it's live save causing an error. I think somewhere in the program's "brain", it is not live saving, but somewhere else, it is... so like, I make a change and I save it manually but that is eventually overriden by "live save" which actually saved and only remembered the very first save I made to the project. That's my theory anyway... but now I just save new versions every time I am going to shut Resolve. Probably slow and unnecessary but I don't really have a better idea.
I have a quick tip for beginners. If you want to watch a fully rendered section of your edited work, use the "i" and "o" keys to select a section in your timeline. Go to the deliver page. Export it. Whenever you want to do it again I suggest using the same name and overwriting the file name so you don't have a million different "testing timeline" videos. I hope this makes sense and helps anyone who hasn't thought ab doing this.
Project backups are are so important! There is a very interesting shortcut key that will erase your entire timeline. (I don't know what it is but I've had it happen at least twice!) When I went to undo it, Resolve froze and crashed, and when I reopened the project, of course the timeline was empty. Thankfully the last backup was fairly recent, and I was back to where I was in no time.
Now we know about five ways to create copies and backups. But what is the difference between them? Live save (auto save) and duplicate timeline are kind of self-explaining. But what is the difference between a project backup and a database backup and a project archive?
The Live Save does save unsaved projects. If you crash before you've saved it has a project waiting for you with a name like Untitled Project 2022-03-05_082537. If you exit normally it deletes the saves. Any time I'm just messing around and try to use the ranges node, it crashes me. It's allowed me to go back to what I was playing with before I placed that node.
i use duplicate timeline cause I prepare double language videos, so I create the first set based on the first language, then duplicate (and rename it) and then Iadjust for the second onne. Or I work on two timelines at the same time after the first duplicate. i decide often based on how many effect I think about using so not to have to repeat every step twice, but onece and then adjust correcting the timing if I simply have to add the audio
Excellent! Thanks. One question...when you duplicate a timeline how much more data is created? Does it actually double the amount of data that needs to be stored?
Hiya Doug. Not too much data, it's just the timeline itself but not the media. Think of the timeline like a seating plan, if you double it, you're just doubling the list of where everyone sits, not actually doubling the amount of people!
Auto backup is great but I always turn off live save. I'm too used to opening up documents (i.e. word docs, reaper projects, whatever) and being able to try things out, in the knowledge that if I don't save, all my changes will be discarded on exit. My heart sank when I did that in Resolve and was not asked if I wanted to save when I exited. I immediately reopened the project only to find that my project had been trashed by all my experiments that I never expected to persist. 😔
thanks for this. how about export project? do you keep manual projects savings from time to time? coming from premiere It's hard for me to think I don't have a saved project file from time to time and all I have is a project saving over itself over and over (what if I accidently delete something along the way?) and it's autosaves...
Another excellent video loaded with most useful tips. I have a question. I use video transitions when one clip moves on to another... usually blur dissolve. Sometimes...the blur dissolve just doesn't get added between two clips, although it shows that + sign. This usually happens at just 1-2 joints and for the rest of the joints... everything is fine. What am I doing wrong? Please guide.
Great tips 👍🏻 most I already use ☺️ Just one question, can you save the database backup on an external drive? And will it include all the cool preset's that I added?
Hey! Yeah you could store the DB backup on an external drive but it won't include any presets. Its just all of the project files but presets etc are seperate.
Alex a little off topic! Excuse my ignorance but can you answer this query for me? I watch your videos via the Sky UA-cam app and I cannot find a way to subscribe or comment. Any ideas? I have subscribed on my PC but as I have multiple UA-cam channels it means logging in to one of these channels to see your videos on Sky. I am maybe missing something obvious.
great video and good tips! But I have to share that while I really enjoyed using resolve, the amount of time it takes to render versus using an app on the phone is staggering. No I'm not doing professional editing and no I'm not doing a high-end photography or cinematic blog, but I am shooting 4K video of my art in progress on my art channel @lightcode. And I'm still amazed that I can use an app that renders me a 30 minute video in 45 minutes but resolve took 2 days! I guess it's all about what level of finesse you need in your work.
It's all about what hardware you're using. You need a modern, decent pc for Resolve to be quick. This video for example rendered in under 2 minutes for me, but I'm using a high end Pc 🙂
@@MrAlexTech Also, if you are rendering the video in the same format you imported, it will go really fast. I accidently rendered to *.mov recently, (which is what most of my footage is) and it rendered in like 5 min! Verse when I re-rendered it in mp4, it yeah, took like 20 mins.
Yes, certainly the hardware. On my old laptop it would always take quite a long time to export but when I got my new one it is so fast I am still in awe of it every time 🤪.
Yeaaah but I *think* (haven't confirmed) that if you had it off, then upgraded it wouldn't be on. If you installed latest from scratch then it would be on .
I'm on DR 18.5. Why don't I see the "Backup" icon next to Project Libraries...? I only see "Sort Project Library", "Restore", and "Search" icons as options to click on. hmmmm..... IDK. Anyone please help.
Great video! I have a question, what version of Davinci Resolve should I download for m1 MacBook air? Is 17.4 also optimized for not only m1 max and m1 pro but also just m1 chip? Thanks!
@@MrAlexTech @MrAlexTech Thanks for the reply :) I downloaded the newest 17.4.5 version for Davinci Resolve and it works great with the MacBook m1 air! I completely disagree with this video. I am new to Davinci Resolve. Why is "live save" an option?!?!?!?! UUGHHH!!!! Are you SERIOUS? I had no clue this was on by default. No need for a first save. Since 17 live save does no longer require a first manual save to trigger live save. I know it did before - but no longer…

File - Save or keyboard shortcut CTRL + S :)
