VIDEO CORRECTION: Smart Reframe is in DaVinci Resolve 17 and it is excellent at resizing source materials to different aspect ratios. In particular it allows you define an area of the image to track and keep centralized. Also, the reframe function works by creating keyframes for the position transform meaning you can edit the movements later. Quite powerful!

Already moved to resolve 17 from premiere, and cant be more satisfied. And got the speed editor for free with r17 studio purchase.
Just did the same. I’m diggin it! I had no idea about the hot keys. Resolve is different but surprisingly easy to jump into.
@@craigbeilby 3 months ago i did this comment, now i am even more happy with resolve, there is a world wide training this summer from blackmagic design on all aspects of resolve (certified training) and totally free, for the people who would like to become davinci resolve certified.

@Gurdeep Makha yes it is over and I got my certificate (passed the test). Your best option now is to go the blackmagic design website, to the training section, and you download the 500 pages pdf file, with the 13gb media files FOR FREE and you follow step by step, Once you finish all the lessons in the book, and make sure to work with them, you can take the certification test as well. (85% to pass)
Else, head to one of their certified trainers, like rippletraining.com, but the courses their are not free.
Or stay on youtube and watch some videos, the only thing here, stuff are not organized, kinda messy, if you want to just learn, it is fine, if you want to apply for the test, i do not recommend youtube.
Best of luck!
This was exactly what I needed. I've been wanting to leave adobe so this is awesome and worth the $300 bucks.
Awesome. So glad it helped. Welcome to the world of Resolve.
Davinci is like blender,a platform that grows so fast it beats all it's competitors and will surpass them even more in the future
A very honest and on point case for DaVinci Resolve.
Using it since 2015 to edit features- shorts - music videos - Nonfiction as well as fiction. I love it. The Free version is all I need.
The free version is definitely an amazing amount of power and value.
Oh YES!!!
More Davinci Resolve stuff with your amazing style! Love you videos sir thank you.
You're welcome! We're building a full DaVinci training course as well!
Started with Davinci Resolve 4 years ago and never tried the others. Feel I don't need to. Davinci Resolve is more than enough to me. All that time I am working with the free version and just purchased the Studio one two month ago after the introduciton of version 17. Now I have the optimum package.
Your experience sounds exactly like mine.
I’m in the middle stages of using the free version. Edited some videos. They have helped me get into the world of UA-cam. They will have my money. No doubt. I would have never paid for Premiere. Cloud and annual subscription compared to this is a no brainer.
Best soft soft tutorial for beginners on UA-cam! I'm an absolute beginner and all the other tutorials I've found on UA-cam have been so
No brainer, switched in 2019, never looked back.
Got the Studio version with the Speed Editor. 👍
Hey Serg. You find the speed editor makes a huge difference?
@@dave.h4075 I am sure it will once I get more into it, it's really designed for the Cut Page,
and that takes a while to get up to speed.
After 14 years of editing in Final Cut. I finally switched over to DaVinci Resolve with the release DR 17 beta. Priceless, I purchased DR 15 studio a couple of years ago. But just played around with it here and there. But now, I'm sold.
What made you to switch?
Well Tom, where do I start🤣. Davinci Resolve has everything that I need for my style of editing. The three things that were holding me back were. Not having the Magnetic Timeline that I love in Fcpx. Second not be able to use my 3rd party plugins. I truly believe those two things are keeping a lot of Final Cut users from switching. Once I started using Resolve, more, and more. I found myself not missing the magnetic timeline as much. I can still shoot my project over to Fcpx if I really need one of my 3rd party plugins. The third and last thing that held me back was. I really did not want to take the time to learn it. But I'm so glad I took some personal time & learned everything about Resolve that would fit my workflow. Plus, I can still use my Motion 5 projects in Davinci Resolve as well. Hey Tom, which editing software are you currently using?
@@Mixxwizard Thx for so long answer. Currently Premiere, but I'm planning to switch to a mac. Then FCPX or Davinci. Premiere is sooo bugged....
What do you mean, you can use motion 5 projects in davinci? :)
If you create a project in Motion. Then you can render it out as Alpha/Transparent format. Then you can use that rendered file in your Resolve, Premiere or Fcpx project. The only thing is in Fcpx. You can edit your changes back & forward with Motion & Fcpx.
I'm still learning Fusion, for now. So I'm still using Apple's Motion to create my visual effects.
I'm using Davinci Resolve Studio for 1 month and it's just a killer of Premiere Pro! Now waiting for your course about editing in Avid and my toolset is completed 😁
Avid and DaVinci courses are both on the way!
@@FilmEditingPro u guys need to bring it out sooner
@@FilmEditingPro Great info 🔥
You simply awesome and great to explain all things about davinci. I'm a fan of davinci.
The cut page is only magnetic in the bottom. If you drag n drop in the “bars” on top you can do anything. Same with fcpx. You can turn off the magnetic function and freely move clips around. Also the tracking in resolve/fusion is bar none the best I have ever used (sans ‘synth eyes, which is pretty deep)
Bar none the best? what does that mean? That tracking is shit or good?
Fusion is so much more flexible than After Effects once you get used to the node based environment.
Really? I use resolve for everything but graphics. I love the nodes. But i think AE is still superior
@@Drogado68 yes, ae is superior only for motion graphics but not for VFX/compositing, for vfx, node based compositing has been industry standard since the beginning hence all the industry standard comp softwares have been node based, Flame, Shake, Fusion and currently nuke and yes Fusion was used to make movies before Nuke became the current industry standard. AE doesn't come anywhere close to Fusion for compositing.

I tried switching to resolve multiple times but the Adobe ecosystem pulls me back everytime 😂😂😂. In my opinion resolve is an amazing tool and deserves more appreciation 👍
Agreed. I really really tried moving to davinci for basic editing but Adobe is just more refined and easier to use. For color correction tho DaVinci is obviously the best
I've done all of my learning in DaVinci Resolve and continue to do so (that is until you release tutorials for Avid, I will add that to my toolset). And DaVinci has been easy enough for me to make me forget about software and technicalities just faded away so I could focus on the editing itself and pay more attention to your great content and editing tutorials.
Hey Ravikant! 😀👋
@@FilmEditingPro Hi! Great video. Superb job as always!
The CUT especialy with the speed editor it's the best thing that could happen to me. When you learn a few keys, the work is quick, intuitive, and accurate, I mean cutting scenes - forget about working with a mouse, it's the Middle Ages :)
8:15 This becomes even easier with multicam clips. Simply let resolve sync all clips of a scene based on timecode and waveform and switch between them with your numpad. Color grading isn't as straight-forward anymore with this but it's manageable and makes the timeline a lot cleaner with only one clip for all cameras and recorders you had shooting at the same time.
I have DaVinci 16 and pre-ordered DR17. I LOVE Davinci Resolve. the best editing software ever.

The video says that Resolve can't do automatic resizing of source media to different aspect ratios. I'm sorry, but this is wrong. Not only Resolve can do it, it's actually the software that does it better, with more options, and more flexibility.
You are 100% correct! Thank you for catching that. We've added a note in the video description addressing the correction.
I fucking love you mate!! I saw a lot of videos for soft but tNice tutorials one is handsdown the best one! Love how your super calm and really take
Alright that's it. After using premiere for 6 years, I'm so done. I've colored in resolve for a while, but now its time to fully make the switch.
I'm really hoping you do an After Effects vs fusion comparison. That's the only thing that is stopping me from jumping to Resolve and I really want to know how your opinion.
Great idea! It's now on the upcoming topic list.
I switched to Resolve last year but I also still use After Effects on just about every project. I can tell you, as much as I miss the dynamic link between Premiere and AE, the way that Resolve has drastically improved my editing experience far outweighs the lack of having dynamic link. Imo it's still worth ditching Premiere. Good luck!
Once you use nodes you’ll never go back to layered fx workflows
Yay! Thanks for taking a look at DaVinci. I also enjoyed watching you use your professional workflow to cut the scene! Great job for putting this together.
HI!
I had a really important question to ask... Is it absolutely necessary to know and work in Avid Media Composer in order to get a job as a film editor in Hollywood? (especially in New York)
There may be some projects that won’t require Avid but you’ll largely be limited if you don’t know it.
@@FilmEditingPro Thanks so much!!
I often end up destroying my timeline haha. i.e. I work at the end of it and my edits change something way earlier. I know why it happens, I just haven't adjusted to the workflow properly. I am an amateur after all.

Resolve is catching up fast. it's good for consumers to have a competition in Good NLE's
Catching up? They blew past Adobe a long time ago.
Very nice. I'm using FCPX on a Mac, but I've got a spare Linux machine with some NVidia GPUs so I'll give Resolve a try.

I'm really glad I made the switch from Premiere to Resolve - once you get used to it, it's so much better. Premiere was getting right on my tits.
I love DaVinci Resolve, but its just to demanding for my computer. I get a ton of crashes and that makes editing frustrating. So for that reason I switched back to Premier Pro. Unfortunately. Hopefully just temporary until I can afford a better Pc.
On what part of your pc was Davinci too demanding? RAM, CPU, GPU or something else? I have problems with Davinci too, while I can edit smoother with Premiere without the image stuttering.
Your lesson helped a lot, after that i wrote my first lody. Thank you very much.
BTW Davinci Resolve has a Keyword system: 6:59 - you can clearly see it on the right side in the metadata panel. Just type keywords to appropriate cell and smart bins will be created automatically.
Yes it has, but its so much limited... First there is no quick keyboard short cut to bring the keyword window and second, and most importantly, you can't assign keywords to multiples selections inside a single clip.. As I said in a previous comment, this is absolutely killer feature to have when editing documentary work, where very long takes are common..When you have a 15 min clip containing a lot of scenes or situations going from a two shot of a conversation to close up cut aways etc.... (cameraman did not cut to keep sound rolling or avoid missing a spontaneous event) ... it's just amazing. Also, if you keyword say a 5 seconds selection of a longer clip, when clicking on the keyword "bin", your 5 seconds selection will appear as a new, 5 sec clip, a bit like when you create a sub clip in Resolve, except you STILL can extend it or reduce it, by moving it's IN and OUT points.
Wow!!! Your tutorial was terrific!!! Thank you!
Great, need more editing tutorials

Our prices haven’t changed in the last last few years, as unfortunate as global situations have transpired.
Obviously personal preferences play a role in choosing an NLE, but I always find myself feeling a little sorry for anyone that has to struggle through editing tasks with other products, especially Premier. Everything is so much easier and faster with Resolve.

@@FilmEditingPro really nice stable voice tone as well as editing
can you make a tutorial on how to synch audio with the footage
At 1:55 he states Resolve is not as customizable as Premiere Pro. To me the layout of the GUI is the most impotent aspect of an NLE. With Premiere Pro I can have everything where I want it. That being said I do like Resolve, Media Composer and FCPX. I agree that they all work about the same with different strengths and weaknesses. I just prefer the GUI of Premiere Pro best. It would be great if Adobe lowered the cost of all their programs.
Resolve default GUI is so good it doesn't need customising from our perspective. Having features split into pages is a huge help too.
@@FilmEditingPro I disagree. I don't like the fact that Resolve is like using five different programs with different layouts.. The Adobe programs all have a similar GUI and similar way of working. Resolve is like switching between Avid Media Composer and Garage Band. I admit the Lumetri Color Panel is not the greatest but it is just a panel in Premiere Pro as opposed to using a totally different software program just to do color correction. The audio is just anther panel in Premiere Pro as well. With Resolve nine times out of ten you will switch over to Fairlight. Rather than integrate Fairlight into Resolve's Editing GUI it was tacked on as a separate program. I like Resolve but I think the GUI could be a lot better.
What did you use for all the animations in this video? Fusion or After Affects?
i am so glad that UA-cam suggested this channel to me. I am blessed now. Thanks 🙏
Well done on this video. Resolve is the future king of NLE's.
I've watched lots of videos about switching to resolve, most of them made me dizzy. Now I'm convinced. Thanks for breaking things down so simply. Liked and subscribed.
Good guide for beginners)
Glad you think so!
I lost the audio waveforms. I can hear the sound and i can see the wavforms on some of my go pro clips but on more than half it never generated. This makes it impossible to use resolve and i wish i could because it is free.
One additional con for AVID users is that when you bring a sequence (via AAF) with 3D Picture in Picture elements in it to Resolve, the effect isn't recognized and you're left with the top-most video layer of the composition. Otherwise, DaVinci is really good at translating Timewarps and Resizes.
That is a huge con. Basically Avid has no logic with using multylayerd effects upon nested ones. It is just jarring how Avid just does whatever it wants at some point and that trying to make an effect as you want it can be sometimes complicated. In DR you have to find work arounds too, but at least they work on a logical base.
It is hard to explain and I could give you any real detail, but avid just gets wonky at some point using many pic in pic overlays-
Yes yes yes. Resolve eats up timewarps which are much quicker to do in Avid. Dozens of less clicks and fussing with the lack of ability to freeze within a Resolve retime. When I first learned there is no real zero in a retime, you have to cut and use a freeze frame then go back to the retiming in another cut. Very frustrating to do. In Avid, you curve to zero, hold it as long as you want and curve back up. Resolve's retiming should be like that. But, coming from Avid's retime from an AAF and using Resolve's optical flow is eons better quality so best of both worlds if you edit primarily in Avid. Optical flow is slow but you've already timed everything out so no guesswork, just render time.
I don't think so if I've ever watched a video about experiencing a totally new software, I've been thinking about moving to resolve from past few months but I got lazy cause it's kinda huge, and complexed, made me think I won't get hang of it, but now I'm definitely going to try this tomorrow, Thanks!
You’re welcome, Syed!
There is no better editting software out there. No question! Thank you for this video.
Man please teach us the creative edit. Your "2 min" preview edit was better than my 12 hrs version
Sometimes I egostically wish that creators stop making videos telling about the excellence of Resolve or suggesting that people make a switch. I just want to maintain exclusivity and brilliance of Resolve. Let the Adobe fans stick with their adobe and FCP their fcp. We don't want overcrowding in the Resolve space 🤑 Wow! I sound very selfish!!
Frrrrr tNice tutorials man just straight forward !
Sir can you post a video about working with different frame rates video in one sequence in premiere pro...
Edit
I have edited a video of 120 FPS in 24 FPS frame rate...but that looks choppy.. help me sir..🙏
Yes, that’s a great topic idea. We’ll make a video on it!
coming from FCPX this really feels overwhelming because I loved the simple design but I see the advantage of switching so I wanna learn and your video finally explains something more understandable!
You *can* automatically resize a clip to fit your aspect ration in Resolve. You just have to enable it in the settings.
True!
You came up in my recommendations on UA-cam, working on my first feature, nearly everything will be done in Resolve. I will be directing, cameraman, editing, VFX, sound design, colour work and delivering as DCP for festivals and a couple of test screenings at a local independent cinema. Blender is going to be used for some of the vfx into Fusion for compositing. I am in two minds on using fairlight for the audio and music side. I have Nuendo so will use that. This is a totally No budget movie, all the equipment is owned by the crew. It is a passion project, we have no delusions of getting it out as a money maker. But I am determined to make it the best that we can. So I am really pleased to have stumbled onto another channel that will have a positive affect on our journey.
I love DaVinci Resolve. But, as a Sony user, I record everything in 10-bit color, and that is where the free version becomes unusable... resolve won't even let you view the 10-bit AXVS-I clips. Once you buy the license (or one of the hardware tools, which is a better deal), you can start to work with your 10-bit footage.
The real love with Resolve comes when you start using the speed editor and the color panels. To me, that is what obliterates the competition.... well, not to mention that the stabilization is very good and runs FAST, and that DaVinci essentially never crashes, and that you don't even have to save your edit, and that the color page is actually proper color grading, and that the audio panel is an integrated tool, etc, etc, etc... sigh
Once you learn resolve (which is not super easy), you will feel like Premiere Pro was a toy.
Thanks so much for tNice tutorials ssage

Keyword feature is available in Resolve and you can make smart bins out of it.
Are you able to advise about Pinnacle Studio as compared to other software that you have reviewed please?
Recently gave Resolve editing a shot on some decent sized projects. It's so great in so many ways. I don't like all the mousing around. It's fast technically but doesn't particularly "feel" accurate like trimming in Avid is so making fine adjustments ends up overall slower. But, for constructing quick assemblies especially per scene getting them close enough and porting them over into Avid for offlining is actually very easy and considerably faster for once in a lifetime. It has almost everything good going for it.
Things I miss.
- A solid trim mode. Avid's is just hands down the best. Premiere's dynamic trim is okay, Resolve's is actually terrible (super clunky unless you like precise mousing). The biggest thing is it doesn't release trim mode like you can in Avid by clicking on the TC track. That for me is a huge time saver while refining an edit.
- Keyboard functionality without dozens of modifier combinations. Alt, ctrl and shift are all you really should need for cutting.
- Snapping via one button hold. Hate that you have to toggle it.
- True track based edit manipulation. Resolve is quasi track based even in edit mode.
- Roughly managing audio levels is much faster in Avid mixer largely because you can apply per track and in/out and not have to copy paste things.
- Extend edit that isn't schizophrenic.
- Speed and retime manipulation are so much easier in Avid. Hell it's easier in After Effects. However, Resolve's optical flow and stabilization are much much better.
- Forced rendering that doesn't create a mixdown that needs to be swapped back to the OG before adjusting. Sure, Avid creates mini mixdowns for renders just as Premiere does but adjusting them in Resolve after forcing it to render sucks and creates a mess. It's auto render is nice but when I'm focusing on a certain area tweaking timings, it's a chore to wait the several seconds for Resolve to start to background render what I actually want. I could go somewhere else in the timeline and do things while I wait but No. That's silly. My brain is focused on the thing I am doing. Waiting for any of the options to keep up is phoooosh.. trying at times. Wouldn't want a client in the room explaining to them about magic computer ghosts while it's rendering something I don't actually care about instead of what I do want done first. Seems okay for a grading session but not for cutting as fast as the brains in the room are moving.
Going back to Resolve for polish and grading is how it's always been but it's really a very very useful tool to help minimize the tedious work before the edit and spend more time actually shaping the feels. For example. Syncing external audio in Resolve is _worlds_ faster and less tedious. Doing a nice one light LUT before busting out proxies makes it so there is no processing at all for offline color in Avid while cutting. Smooth like butter.
Long story short: I have started beginning my projects in Resolve, Proxying out the footage, slapping scenes together with all the shots I think I will want -- face find is truly a treat, popping over those timelines and actually cutting in Avid, get approval and off to ProTools for sounds, back to Resolve as it has been for a long time now for final tweaks, grading and polish. I have yet to deliver to broadcast or any streaming service out of Resolve. Other guys do that so I'm not sure if it's better or not.
Can't believe I didn't know about how easy round tripping to Avid and back is years ago or I'd have been doing it all this time. I've met tons of editors and no one has ever suggested this. Really great stuff.
while Resolve's feature set is great, it didn't work for me while i was doctoring 2 feature films edited in Resolve. It was just too buggy and slow when the project is big. When edit versions were about 3-4, it was acceptable, but when it went over 10 versions of feature film in the same project, it started to be super slow, driving me mad. When i got back to Premiere I was so happy and relieved. In my experience, one can tell Resolve wasn't designed as an editing application but made into one. For now at least. I sincerely hope they will fix it as the software itself is amazing
A good caveat for sure! Has anyone else here experience the same issue with larger projects getting buggy?
@@FilmEditingPro That can easily happen when you use a disk database instead of a Postgres SQL server. A disk database is a large folder of XML files. On every save Resolve will create a complete new set and then delete the old ones. The bigger the project the more time it will take to do all that. Disk databases are fine for some quick projects, but any serious use definitely should switch to a Postgres DB for saving projects.
But can easily become a problem with many NLEs. Premiere has problems too on very large projects, because everything is saved in a single XML file. Avid has a bit of an advantage because each bin is it's own file and you can close them when they're not in use.
Another issue to look out for is version compatibility. During major version upgrades, the database needs to be upgraded, those projects can no longer be opened with older versions. And if you have databases that are more than 1-2 versions back, they may not open either. Resolves requires a rigorous archive strategy to avoid data loss. Not as foolproof as Avid on that front.
@@JanKlier Amazing and helpful information, thank you Jan! This is some of the "behind-the-interface" stuff that we all feel as we're working but typically don't understand why it's happening.
@@FilmEditingPro Like Jan Klier suggested, switch to a PostgreSQL database for bigger projects. Projects will open and save much quicker. It also helps to store media and caches on a fast SSD or RAID, so thumbnails, audio waveform and clip metadata can be read and written quickly. I also usually switch my timeline view to the preset with no thumbnails.
I also noticed the newer the version the more bigger projects become an issue. Maybe I'll try what has been suggested
a little tip cuz ive been using davinci fo quiet a while now you should spent more time in the fusion and color tab than the editing cuz inspecter and effects sre great but you can make it more alive with 3d motion graphic design and more so spend like 3 hours in editing and then hop in the the rest for most of the remaining time if you need to make a few patches here and there in the editing tab do that but dont spend all your time there
I hope you get what you're looking for!
Iam editing in resolve since 2017
I n the last 25 years I used pretty much any NLE out there . I switched to Resolve as my only NLE since version 12, and never looked back. For me it's the best editor so far.
Yes, it has been a good working program for me since 2016
Myanmar dia Light Nice tutorial, wNice tutorialch soft soft did you buy? I’ve been wanting to buy one for a wNice tutorialle as well
I tried it. I love it, biy it kept crashing on my brand new Mac M1 with 16GB. Final Cut doesn't do that.
you just destroyed Premiere.....good Work! i'm convinced
Haha, we still love Premiere and use it a lot too. But Resolve really has a LOT going for it.
Awesome! Another editing platform to learn then I’ll have 3 of them under my belt.
I'm sticking to grading only. I had to use DaVinci as my sole editor for almost two years and am glad to say I'm finally back in FCPX. I just can't get used to DaVinci. Editing with it feels way too slow for me, and I've had the studio version since Christmas 2019. As soon as covid hit, it became my only option for editing. I was not pleased. You'd think after two years I'd just be used to it now, but I'm not. It took me a week in FCPX to remember everything I liked about it. The timeline is the worst offender for me. I just hate Resolve's timeline. Colour grading is amazing, and that's literally all I use it for now. I grade and export, that's it. Everything else is handled in Final Cut.
Why is no one talking about how buggy/unstable DR is? I get 50 crash per day and I spend around 30% of my time working out why DR won't render.
Depending on the machine you are currently using, probably. I use Resolve since version7 and NEVER seen that before! Very stable!
Yes, you might have problems with your computer system. Resolve runs very stable on our computer systems. Even the beta versions.
my entire workflow is Resolve...from camera to software and the speed editor in the middle...perfect...all my videos on my channel are from that workflow...i m still learning but its so cool...love it..totally....
I use resolve because it came free on my bmpcc 4k and it runs on Linux.
Blackmagic are amazing for bundling it with their cameras! And very cool that it runs on Linux, Windows and Mac.
I finally just bought into the studio version and it's 100% worth the $300 for the extra features. Especially the native video decoding and encoding.
Thanks for this. Just getting started it’s a bit overwhelming what tool to invest energies into. I’ve been leaning to FCP but this demo is causing me to second guess.
I went from final cut 7 to resolve. I just started using the speed editor too. So good.

I think if they make possible in edit window to switch between Source and Record windows like in Avid and make more precise in and out points will be big upgrade, and most important to work in net with other editors and vfx, and sound designer will be step that put this software next to Avid in professional editing, trim tools need polish too, just my opinion . I saw in Blackmagic page that they can make some net working with Avid Nitris servers but is too expensive, i want to see their solution of this. I working with Avid for 20 years and i love Resolve. One more thing, so many panels for different works somethimes going to bugs and making program heavy, think all that all functions and tools from cut page can be implemented in edit, one panel less better performance and more clean workspace. All my little projects i done in Davinci just to learn it and this is what i think about it.
Resolve's page system is one of it's strengths. Each page is streamlined for the work you do in that page, rather than getting bloated with too many features crammed in. Check out Resolve's database system and remote collaboration features.
What? You can have source window on edit page too
just finished making my first track! thanks bro for all the help with learning soft soft. much love
DaVinci works well on my Mac at home, but I've twice had the experience of trying to help friends install it on their Macs, only to find that the keyboard shortcuts wouldn't work because they didn't have the large Mac keyboard with the extra number pads on the right, only the smaller compact one. I would assign commands to certain keys through the keyboard command editor, and DaVinci would simply ignore them, even after quitting the software and rebooting everything. What's up with that, Resolve??
You have to do everything step by step and you will succeed. You must disconnect evrotection. Thank you, Tutorials Buddyerything from PC p
