TONEH for life!! Ha No worries dude 🙂👍 Thanks for making your video! There's loads of weird, hidden stuff in Resolve. I'm used to alot of them these days so it's good to point out some of the stuff which is a PITA to newer users.
Two things: 1: If you like cameras, check out Camera Conspiracies! He's a funny dude! Plus he raised some great points I'd never come across before :) 2: Don't be a dick! People don't know what they don't know. What you think is obvious might be a revelation to someone else. We're all learning 😊 3: I don't work for Blackmagic! I've no affiliation with them at all. DV does odd stuff sometimes! I'm not here to defend it. I'm just a weirdo on the internet trying to make useful videos 😁
Alex, I appreciate your channel and humor a bunch. Point #2 needs to be said over and over. People don't know what they don't know. Fortunately, I knew 95% of what you showed in this video, but I learn a ton from you on a weekly basis. We all were beginners at some point! Now, if we can get BMD to build a proper Text tool like they have in Premiere.. It's the one thing I miss since moving to DR back three years ago.
I don’t watch a lot of UA-cam, so it always blows my mind when two desperate creators that I follow suddenly show up in each others content. Great video, and thanks for saving us trouble typing a lot of that out in a comment :)
Your content really does make a significant difference for folks that don't know the little quirks of resolve, for people like me it's invaluable, massive thank you.
I REEEALLY LOVE how you do this without brow beating. As far as I go, when I really struggle with something and am ready to throw it through the wall, it really sux to have someone tell you how to do it in a degrading way cuz I already feel stupid. I've also come to find ALWAYS make things too hard.. the answer is always really logical and straight to the point. But I still do it every time. I think that is the difference between a really creative mind and a mechanical one on a first pass at something..idk. This really helped thank you. Side note..his video made me laugh so hard when I first saw it 🤣 I'm glad others are as frustrated as me..
Clicking the centre to get the last keyframe adjustment makes sense once you know, This will actually be really helpful for my workflow, thanks Alex for the tip
What an awesome collection of workarounds and process tips. Been watching you since moving to DaVinci and appreciate all the quick and practical walk-throughs and demos. Thank you
camera conspiracies has made a couple similar videos. i am glad you have made this video, i knew some work arounds, but you have taught me some new ones and i am very happy about this. great video.
These kind of videos are super helpful because DR is great, but still full of surprises for beginners or people transitioning from other NLE. And oftentimes one has no idea what's just happened. Sometimes I find solutions for some of the problems, but this video often explains it even better and gives me more options.
Amazing tips!! Thank you so much! You keep setting a new standard for 'The video with the most helpful Resolve tips' pretty much every time you put out a new video.
6:45 While I love Resolve, I've always HATED the edit page keyframe system. Imo it's the worst part about Resolve, especially the spline editors, which are essentially unusable if you want to keyframe position and scale at the same time. We shouldn't have to go to the fusion page anytime we want our keyframes to look good
Just starting to use DR and this is my first venture in to proper editing software. I have much to learn and glad I found your channel. Your content is spot on and delivered perfectly. I just need to practice as I learn through doing. Thanks for the guides 👍🏼
Thank you for your tips. Your videos are always very helpful and I learn a lot. Although I think I already know quite a lot about Davinci Reolve, you always manage to surprise me with new tricks and key shortcuts. 🙏👍
When I was doing a lot of data management on set I had a premade folder structure that could be imported directly in any video editor that supported folder structure, no matter what software you used you would be happy with it. I would always contact the editor to know if the structure was ok and if needed I would modify it for that specific shoot, but it was rare.
Just a thought. It strikes me that DR is designed for Pro Edit facilities, and some of the fixes that can be done in the media page are there because that's where a professional would send their media first to do those jobs. I personally love the media page for all of the possibilities that it offers in media management, and is one of the strong points in DR. Fantastic tutorial as always, Alex. Thanks again.
Your amazing at what you do Alex, wow you solved the guys problem in no time, your videos are explained so easily without complication, thank you for everything u do for us
The transform limit seems to be connected to Resolve's 16k image limit. You can't bring in even a still image that exceeds Resolve's max resolution limit (15,360 wide and/or 8,640 tall). I wrote to them about that years ago.
I'm curious can you import it into the Fusion tab and adjust it further? If so then one could make a custom Timeline Fusion transform filter that had controls to move the image around and that could potential fix it. I would test this my self, but I'm in the middle of a render. so can't test this at the moment.
@@billyoung9538 I would assume you could, if you had no other great choice. Fusion also has the 16k limit for images, but I've never had issues with its transform running into limits.
@@NathanShirley I think the image size limit likely has more to do with speed and video ram given how GPU dependent Resolve is, but I was just trying to think of a relatively simple solution to solve the transformation limit. One a Timeline fusion transformation fileter was mode, it should in theory be as easy to use as any other timeline filter, and one would only have to build the effect once and place it into the proper folder, depending on ones OS.
Love to see this collab. Two of my favourite UA-camrs - what's not to like! I learned a few things too. One thing I'd like to see Black Magic add is a nice way to delete files from the hard drive without having to find in Media Pool first, and when I do delete them, please put them in the recycle bin.
Aaaaah. That first tip is perfect. I have a folder structure that I do in windows and it always miffed me because it wouldn’t add them with folders in DR. Thanks!!!
I actually prefer that you are not employed or paid by Blackmagic because it makes your responses more legit. You are simply defending the program you use for editing because you actually find it useful (minus some hiccups on the road but every program has them), as opposed to being paid by the company and you are just blindly defending them. Another great video by the great MrAlexTech.
Thank you so much ! 🙏🏼 Maybe someone stated it already. When it comes to transitions - you can CTRL + C , CTRL+V them anywhere :) I find it easiest iso dragging from the side 🤷🏼 If I missed it in the video or comments, I'm sorry. 🙏🏼❤️
Love it 😁, now Casey can be a little less grumpy 😂. Didn know the Auto-sync in media pool trick. Would have been nice to know a few month ago where I had to sync 200clips individual 🤦♂️. But now I know 🥳🤩👍
For the Transform Limit - I hit this frequently. It's basically due to zooming in really far into an image, so transforming to THAT extent happens frequently. The "fix" I found was to simply move the anchor point. If I want to zoom in on something, I move the anchor to it first, THEN zoom in and do minor adjustments.
Hi Alex, Coming from Avid MC my main problem on the edit page is not being able to toggle between timeline and source clip. Wondering why nobody addresses this basic issue. On Avid I can toggle to the source clip, solo monitor an audio channel, set in and out points and route the selected channel to the timeline. In DR I have to delete audio channels in the clip attributes before editing or bring all audio to the timeline and delete then unwanted audio. Or I have to create timelines for my source clips as a workaround with the restriction of copying files to the timeline instead of editing. Being able to toggle to the source clip and routing audio would make editing in DR so much easier. That’s my main issue with DR.
Some good stuff in here. I'm still getting used to Resolve (I'm a recent Premiere refugee) and I have had some little things I have had to work out like this that are just different to Premiere. One thing that kills me about BOTH programs is that I can't draw a box to select multiple timeline clips if I have the Ripple/Trim Edit tool active. I can shift-select them individually, but I want to draw the box!
For sequenced images, Resolve assumes images are in sequence if they are named in any kind of order. It wouldn't lump them together if one image was "IMG 01" and the next was "IMG 03" for example. Most of the time, you do want sequenced images so another quick fix would just be to change one of the image names.
10:08 Can you tell me why the audio and video transitions won’t move independently? If I try to shorten or lengthen either one separately, the both respond. Even in your video, when you click on just the video transition, it highlights the audio transition as well. Super annoying! 😡
Really awesome video....unfortunately it didn't resolve my workflow issue. So here's one for you @MrAlexTech ...I hope you've got a fix for this! Why can't I smart filter the individual clips within a multicam once I add that multicam onto a timeline and cut it up into various segments? Here's the workflow use case...Imagine you strap two cameras on a vehicle (e.g. a kayak) one pointed forward and one backward and you film yourself as you travel around (e.g. catching fish). Sometimes you're pointed directly at the sun and sometimes you're not...in fact you're at all different lighting angles. Because you don't know when the action will take place you're recording all of the time. And at any point in time or lighting angle you may want to use the action captured (e.g. caught fish). The good news is that you've got multiple angles to play with in post. So you sit down, edit your footage, keeping only the best angles from your multicam shoot...sometimes wishing you could move the sun itself, but alas you can't so you take the other angle and/or cover with some b-roll or drone shots. Now you want to color it to ensure different cameras match, mood, etc. But those 300 segments you ended up with that reside inside of that multicam clip....there's no way to filter them to the given angle so that you can color that angle as a group....let me take that back, you can do it...you have to click one at a time with multi-select, ensure you're precise on your clicks and keep the multi-select key down, scroll the strip as you click each one, and once they're all selected right click and add them to a group. Now you need to repeat that same laborious process for the other angle too. Then you can lightbox each group, re-group any that have extremely different lighting, and now start color correction/grade against the groups you made. That whole precise-click-multi-select-and-scroll-with-manual-selection-of-angle-name part of the process would be two clicks if you could Smart Filter angles in a multicam clip. We can do it manually, we can even put them in groups, so why can't we smart filter them???
@9:22 "clips gone forever..." just hit "undo". At least they're back for you to try again. Usually, (after undo) I just zoom out so I can see the whole time-line. Then I can drag them to where I want them without having that issue.
Thank you Alix, i have one problem in my newest video after i published it, i found that three little clips were upside down, i have no idea how it happened can it be fixed ????, ps it was my hero 8 on my chest strap
Look at audio 15:54 , its shifted... When i get this my audio has become desynchronized. Anyone knows how fix it to normal state? Once time i did something wrong while making movie and i don't know how i can fix it :( Internet didn't help :(
My audio was actually in sync (think just the video looks out). But if you need it back, find the clip in the media pool, right click and select Clip Attributes. Then select Audio tab, change Source Channel back to embedded channel
@@MrAlexTech audio works well now (its sync) thank you so much :D just only look like desynchronized and still point at the beginning (without waveform) is "muted". I will try fix it but right now is better than before, because i don't have to rewatch every time I put something on timeline for good sync :)
I'm new to Davinci. Probably this is somewhere out there, but can't figure out what to search for to get me answers. When I import a 4k footage it automatically assigns it a 1080p res for the viewport. When I tried to export said footage, it exports it as 1080. If i change the resolution it does scaling instead. I don't understand why this is so overly complicated. Any tips would be appreciated!
My “sort order” is greyed out when the Media Pool is in List mode (but there if it’s in Gridor Thumbnail view). You don’t seem to have this issue! Any idea why? (I’m on Resolve 17, was this a bug fix that 18 sorted?)
Great video and great workarounds Alex. One thing I've noticed in this beta which is slightly annoying is, over on the colour page, when I make my scopes a floating window they...well, they just kinda have a mind of their own when it comes to moving them around the screen 🤣. I'm editing an interview and last night I actually felt like I was in a wrestling match with the vector scope as I colour graded (I lost) 🤣. I'm sure this is just a little "beta-bug" - still annoying though 🙄🤣. Cheers as always sir 🙏🏻
I've got more! 😂 Easing position keyframes on the edit page Controls on the timeline edit vs color and on the viewer edit vs fusion Wanky keyframes in fusion (bunch of issues) Importing svg files Audio export bitrate limit for mp4 Adjusting cross dissolve for multiple clips by dragging clip corner Pasting sth to a specific track Wanky keyframes in fusion tracking No specific opacity node in fusion And more surely
Hi Alex! Off topic comment here but I am Trying to learn how to “draw” a handwritten text on DaVince… look at your vídeos and couldn’t find it. Do you have something teaching this? Thanks and kudos
When I synch audio in 17 using "based on waveform" it still appends the audio, but removes the original audio as expected. If I were to do this in 18, it'll just leave the single audio track? Is this new in 18, or am I missing something in 17, or am I just bonkers? If it's a new feature, I'm downloading 18 asap.
Some great tips here - thanks. Question ! I create power bins and they reflect my PC file structure - all the media are available in the DR Power Bin. However if I add a file to my folder on the PC, it does not come through to the power bin. I have to re-import the structure (and the files)again into DR. Is this right or am I missing something?
Hey Adrian! That's correct. It's a one time thing, it doesn't keep track of what's on your PC, only replicated the structure within resolve upon import.
09:33 I think he was refering to applu several transitions to the same clip, not to several clips at the same time... like, I don't know, use an arrow shape and fade to white ate the same time or something...
Since 18 beta I get the File permission error for backups. No matter what drive I set it to. I also on a few occasions have gotten a weird save error that if I am not careful to copy timeline over after error can result in me losing everything. I know it is beta and 17 was solid before that so not complaining I have still completed 5 FX projects in 18 already but I am sure to do a safety rendering out of the timeline after each session just in case.
Super helpful, thanks dude! I figured most of these were user error lol.

Here's the workflow use case...Imagine you strap two cameras on a vehicle (e.g. a kayak) one pointed forward and one backward and you film yourself as you travel around (e.g. catching fish).

One thing I've noticed in this beta which is slightly annoying is, over on the colour page, when I make my scopes a floating window they...well, they just kinda have a mind of their own when it comes to moving them around the screen 🤣. I'm editing an interview and last night I actually felt like I was in a wrestling match with the vector scope as I colour graded (I lost) 🤣.
I'm sure this is just a little "beta-bug" - still annoying though 🙄🤣.
Cheers as always sir 🙏🏻
I've got more! 😂
Easing position keyframes on the edit page
Controls on the timeline edit vs color and on the viewer edit vs fusion
Wanky keyframes in fusion (bunch of issues)
Importing svg files
Audio export bitrate limit for mp4
Adjusting cross dissolve for multiple clips by dragging clip corner
Pasting sth to a specific track
Wanky keyframes in fusion tracking
No specific opacity node in fusion
And more surely
I love your videos!!!!!
It seems like most of the issues come from not working in the cut page or am I wrong ?
On top of some file types work, but then don't work. Like some mp3s it will allow to be imported, some not. No .gif support.
How about the app seems to be corrupted, with color green vertical lines.
@@MrAlexTech Thank you for clarifying that point. keep up the good work and I am looking forward to the October event.
09:33 I think he was refering to applu several transitions to the same clip, not to several clips at the same time... like, I don't know, use an arrow shape and fade to white ate the same time or something...
Just found this video, .. instant subscribe, of course.
Great tips, cheers! :))
Good man! Ta!
Since 18 beta I get the File permission error for backups. No matter what drive I set it to. I also on a few occasions have gotten a weird save error that if I am not careful to copy timeline over after error can result in me losing everything. I know it is beta and 17 was solid before that so not complaining
I have still completed 5 FX projects in 18 already but I am sure to do a safety rendering out of the timeline after each session just in case.
Answering the questions I didn't even know I had yet.
