The only one you missed I think is reversing a dash jump, and a wavedash, by dashing and then flicking in the opposite direction and jumping to reverse it. Useful on small platforms as you can start a wavedash from the direction you want to go.
Thanks man, i needed to practice these movements, I got all the blue crystal hearts, the cassettes and the first four red crystal hearts and i wanted to go fully prepared for Farewell (also, that place in Old Site is very comfortable for practicing!) 💙
Really helpful. I've seen speed runs use these techniques and had no idea how. I've been googling trying to find an explanation, and failed. Then UA-cam just recommends this video.... like it knows....
This tech is literally explained in the C-sides :P All these mechanics are approved by the devs, this game was tested heavily with regard to speed-running!
Chapter 9 is going to require you to master a lot of these formerly speedrun-only moves, especially the wavedash. It's just giving me so much trouble that even just watching the later levels on UA-cam gives me nausea. I don't want to have that, but my body's just not ready to tackle the last 2/3rds of the chapter.
wavedash I don't know, but infinite wall jump is simply required for some sections. I noticed i was doing it sometimes but didn't know how. had to see how it worked here.
I was really struggling with the wall dash before this video. Turns out I was holding A instead of pressing it as I hit the wall. Your comparison to the wavedash made me understand it better and I'm much more consistent now, thanks! I must have failed a screen about a hundred times by missing the first wall dash before looking up a vid :(
Was it your first attempt? If so you beat my first attempt by roughly 6 mins. Took me about 8 more full runs (and 50-100 resets) to get a 57, my first sub 1hr.
I've been requesting a video or guide like this, so this is fantastic. Thank you! Can I make a suggestion? Your talking, the small key viewer, and the quickness of the action makes it very difficult to keep up and understand. Instead what would have been great is that before each move, have a title screen with the name of the move, a small description, and the key combination clearly annotated. In the meanwhile I can always try and run the videos at a very slow speed. But the little title slide and a 5 second pause would have been very useful. Thanks!
Glad it helped you out. And the way you described is definitely better, but mind you I am not a video creator at all, I don't have the editing experience or skill to do that. This was just something I threw together really quick, hopefully somebody with more talent for creating stuff like this will make a better version eventually.
Thank you buddy, used this for the last room of Ch1 to get the flying golden strawberry. Took ages but I did it. I would advice just trying and trying again.
It should be noted that it's possible for you to land and jump without getting a refreshed dash if you jump within a small enough time-frame. (I believe it is frame-perfect.) It may be unique to wooden/jump-throughable paltforms, as that's where I've had it happen the most, but I'm sure i've had it happen to me on regular floors as well. I've just gotten my recording setup completed, so I'll be sure to post videos of it when it occurs to verify.
If you jump again before the cooldown is expired, you will not regain your dash. Doing the hyperdashes from the air makes it easier to regain your dash, but you can still end up without one by jumping too early, that is totally correct. Sorry if the way I explained it was confusing.
Yeah it does a good job of walking that tight rope between “I hate this un fair nonsense” snaps controller* and wow I feel my hard work pay off and my fine motor skills are really improving to overcome these challenges
If you look only at the comments without having seen anything in the video (not even the thumbnail, nor the title), it's virtually impossible to distinguish whether the video is about Celeste or SSB. The frontier has become blurred
Much as I appreciate your explanations, I'd like to see a video (or two) about how you could use these strategies in-game. Maybe in the B-Side chapters, perhaps? Great video, by the way.
All these mechanics are used heavily in speedruns, so I'd suggest you just check out a Any% speedrun if you want to see them in action. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Watch any playthrough of Chapter 7 and Core C-sides and you will see these often. There is a pretty spectacular sequence of hyperdashes right in the middle of Core C-Side!
Yo I’m pretty sure if you hold the climb button while neutral jumping off a wall you have 100% vertical momentum.... recently picked up the game so I’m no authority but just a thought
I feel like I'm the only one who has an easy time wavedashing. Y'all are waaaay too patient. Just mess around with when you dash a bit and make a mental note on what worked and didn't work. Eventually you'll get a feel for it. It was hard for me at first too.
If you haven't played the Core B-Side level yet, but are planning to, I could show you an easy trick to get through the otherwise rather challenging first room, using the hyperdash. You have to get the timing right, but once I figured out how to do it I could clear the room with minimal attempts. It's my most recent tweet on my Twitter @_IAmBrett_. (sorry this sounds like self promotion but I'm just trying to help rip. You don't need to follow or anything)
you missed abunch of nonedash advanced mechanics, all the stuff for the winged golden berrys for exp. not related to speedrun sure but with this title ;)
So, I've made it up in the vertical shaft above the elder in Level 6, but can't seem to navigate up it. Would any of these in particular be helpful for that?
To get to the secret area I used the dash wall jump and the hyperdash. Also there are two secret rooms that you can't explicitly see where you have to run into to the "wall" to make them appear, much like a lot of the other hidden rooms in the game. Getting into these two rooms is required to find the secret at the end, which I won't spoil, but I will say that it's pretty cool. If you can't find the rooms you could always look up a UA-cam guide as well, I suppose.
I simply cannot regain the dash again no matter what I try. Tried the Wave dash millions of times. Is there something wrong with me? Is this movement available since the begining of the game? Do I need to get some amount of strawberries or something?? Does the switch have a different version? Please help me out...
before you had to dash downwards to make madeline crouch, and in a small time window (4 frames or something, idk) you had to redirect to another direction but now in the keybind menu you can do a crouched dash. also the crouch dash is called a demodash, and demodashes make madeline always do a hyper n stuff
Fastfalling, wavedashes and neutral walljumps aren't explained at all. They teach you about extended walljump and hyperdash in C-Sides, but I didn't play that far at the time I made this video.
ì could be wrong but i dont think hyperdashing and dashcancel is explained anywhere, just wavedashing and the updashjump mechanic, if it is explained somewhere then i missed it

It is definitely unfair. Casuals don't have the mental capacity to press the jump button right after pressing the dash button.
