I love Celeste. The b side and c sides are basically speed running tutorials. It’s really smart. Take your most dedicated fans and teach them to speed run. That way your game stays relevant for longer. Brilliant

If you're planning analog stick I highly recommend a gamecube controller or another controller with a octagonal gate for more consistent dashes

The modding scene for Celeste has some of the best maps! For anyone wanting to learn tech in depth, the 2020 spring collab is an amazing and polished project. It has 5 chapters based on different difficulties, each having a gym that helps teach them! Its amazing

Tip for controller stick users: GameCube controllers with the notches are VERY useful because it gives the precision of the dpad and is a joystick. I also found the face button layout pretty useful for just going through the game.
To learn mechanics, definitely complete the game (inc c9) and i recommend the modded map spring 2020 collab (they have gyms for each difficulty that teach you mechanics) i managed to learn a LOT from these :)

It's been a while since I played on the switch and I honestly didn't notice the revamped control settings. I love that they streamlined demos!
Oh yea it’s soooooo much better now! Movement optimization is on a whole ‘nother level using the demo button too
Celeste is hard enough as it is for me but it's so cool to see what kinds of crazy stuff people are able to do in this game.
That's what drew me to this game months ago, people like Zkad are truly mind blowing when pulling off some of this stuff so consistently

I actually knew most of these, but the hyper hop was new. This was also very well put together.
Thank you! Hyper b-hops have a lot of great uses in any% when you need a lot of speed and height (especially in Reflection). Top level runners use em all over the place!

This is a really good overview on speedrunning basics! I just got into speedrunning Celeste a Few Days ago and my current PB is 1:32:sth, but I'll try to learn (and master) the tricks you showed! I didn't even know I had to bind 2 jumps, as it's not needed in a 'casual' playthrough. Thanks!

Wow, what an informative video! I’ve watched speedruns for a while now, but never actively ran a game. However, I’m fairly comfortable with wavedashing and those big wall jump (BWJs?) things, and the other moves seem possible to learn. I may actually try out some attempts on Celeste once I watch some routing videos!

I finished this game casually in february 2022. Gonna finish it again casually and then going for the deeper stuff.
Looking forward to finally speedrun a game. And I really enjoyed the story and soundtrack of this game aswell as the top of the notch movement.

I somehow learnt the superdash mechanic that keeps ur dash after launching urself, on the 2nd chapter by pure accident. It never rly had a specific use in the base game so now it makes a lot of sense being a mechanic used mainly in speedruns

I've never really been interested in speedrunning Celeste, if I'll be honest, but I'm definitely going to try these out!
I'm a sucker for challenging but fair mechanics, and having played Celeste for over a year, it definitely scratches that itch for a challenge.
Celeste has honestly felt like one of the most honest games I’ve ever played, especially when it comes to speedrunning. The more advanced tech you learn, the freakier and more fun it gets

Awesome video! Would you consider making a full any% guide like programmatic did in the past but with updated routes? Or is that too much of an undertaking and not really that useful anyway as most of the strats present in programmatic's tutorials are still very relevant?

I think if I were to make a full any% guide I'd probably take a different approach to it and focus more on essential strats / routing depending on the speedrunning barrier people are hitting. For instance, how to get sub hour, sub 50 minutes, sub 40, etc. But it's definitely up for consideration!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that Corner Kicks do not require a second jump button. But if done with just one button you need to hold the jump button for long enough to reach past the corner and then quickly release it and press again. Which is way harder than using a second button.

Here are some tips for people who didn’t really understand it: super dash is easier when you jump only a little so jump for like a couple frame and then dash into the ground, Hyper dash helps to know that you crouch after dashing then jump. Idk reverses. Wave dash is jump AND LITERALLY like 2 frames after jumping dash and press jump, continue doing this and you get a wave dash

Oh yea definitely! I’d highly recommend trying everything with the vanilla stuff they teach you first since relearning a lot of the game with higher level strats is super fun and rewarding, but everyone’s got their own way of playing the game!
@@AverageImposter I just finished my playthrough. Amazing game. The mechanics you explained are really interesting. I think it made the game more fun but also certain parts were easier because of them.
You forgot to mention that the dash pauses the game (and the timer) for few seconds, so it doesn't look faster doing repeated hypers, like at the start of chapter 3A. But it is faster doing constant hypers than just bhopping between each one.
I’m so proud of myself bc I figured out hyper and extended hyper dashes all on my own.
