Yea, there needed to be a puzzle where you had to wait on it. Like, jump on a (blue) key and wait for a spiked wall to slide out of the way. Easy but, it makes sure you understand how it actually works before letting you continue.
I just realized the oshiro boss fight prepares you for the snowballs which both of those together prepares you for the seekers they all have the jump on it and regain dash mechanic, the oshiro boss has the dash, the snowballs let you practice the jumping off them, and when you see the seeker dash in chapter 5 you know somewhat how to avoid it edit: or maybe the snowballs prepare you for the jumps you have to do off the slow moving ice things all throughout chapter 8
Another thing that i’ve noticed is that snowballs and Oshiro are teach you about the mechanics of ice-fireballs in core (also the bouncers are exactly the same)
Panga, a SMM2 and Kaizo Mario legend, has talked about the "formula" for SMM levels recently: introduce a gimmick, teach the player the basics, and then make them learn new techniques with the gimmick. It's similar to zippers in 1A and Dash Activated Blocks in 5A: Introduce objects that give Madeline momentum, then mix it up a bit. The formula is very useful and makes for incredibly fun levels to play and watch :)
Another example I love is how the Theo Crystal kind of teaches you how to use the jelly in Farewell, you have to carry both of them, throw both of them in similar ways to move, you can dash into both of them. Someone else did talk about this in the comments, but I thought I'd give my take anyways. Great video!

I always liked this type of 'leveling tutorial' (at least, thats what I'm calling it) where it never *outright* tells you 2 things work alike, instead they give you something easy to learn, then add a little something to make it harder, then when you get used to that, do it again and again without you ever realizing it. It kinda feels like the scene in dragon ball with goku taking off the weighted clothes, where you don't realize how far you've gotten until you get there. At first, you struggle with the traffic light blocks, then you immediately understand how the dash blocks work, then next thing you know you're a master. Always liked that type of intentionally gradual growth.
i think the snowballs are connected to mr oshiro. they both come from the edge of the screen, and you can jump off both of them. plus, mr oshiro is connected with the mirror dimention monsters
The snowballs may actually be a tutorial for another game. There's a Pico 8 cartridge of the original Celeste, and also a Pico 8 for a 'Celeste 2' where the main mechanic is a grappling hook that lets you pull yourself forward. A segment of the game similar to the Golden Ridge has you using the grapple to grab snowballs, then throw them and bounce on them to reach the end of certain screens.
6:55 i think dream blocks are still a part of this in a way in bsides csides and farewell. The game teaches you how the dream blocks work in chapter 2 but then in bsides (and others) the game expands upon this by teaching you about jumping out of them for extra height and about the ability to grab on to one right after coming out of it. It’s much easier to understand this because you already know the fundamentals of the dream blocks just like the other object connections. Even though it’s the same object it is very much the same idea imo
I noticed most of this stuff playing through the game the first time. It’s something that seems obvious at first, like of course the later mechanics are going to build off of easier to understand older mechanics, but the more you think about it, actually putting those mechanics into an actual game and having the difficulty curve flow as you gain knowledge and understanding is something I tip my metaphorical hat to.
this is that "its obvious it should be done" type thing, not an obvious "does it itself thing". These types of things usually take a lot more time to do than the non-obvious but fun mechanics that come out of nowhere. It was probably easier to think of the traffic block than the dash block just because a new idea is easier than a better/harder iteration while keeping the original idea fun. Mad props to Maddie for doing it so well!

in my head, the snoballs work off oshiro, which is then explored further by the seekers from chapter 5. and dream block work similarly to kevinblocks as platforms you have to dash into to interact. in the case of snowballs, the progression goes clearly telegraphed and chasing you in the same direction you are going, making bonking it easy, to harder to predict ones coming againsg you, making the timing harder, to freely moving obstacles that chase you and for dreamblocks it goes from platform you have dash into to go the same way you dashed, that you can platform around like a normal block to get your bearings before dashing, to a platform you dash into to go the opposite way, that you then HAVE to platform around once you dash to use.

I would connect the jellyfish with walls and platforms. It works with momentum very similarly to how jumping, landing and climbing work. For example you dash and grab it to move up more, kind of like dashing and jumping next to a wall, which is taught in the summit.
Dream blocks are connected back to dash crystals, the way they can be chained together and each returns your dash. Dream blocks connect forward to feathers, being a form of extended faster movement. Dream blocks restrict you to straight lines in specific zones, where the feather only gives you a timer. Dream blocks in the B-side are also where dream jumps are introduced, which connect back to how momentum works in zippers and dash blocks, and connect forward to the way you can take momentum from your own dashes in wallbounces and wavedashes. Omg, dude, you’re literally the first person to comment about the Pokemon sequence. I’ve been waiting for this moment ever since I posted the video! I think it took me like two whole days to make it look just right. Finally, the Pokemon X Celeste thing has been acknowledged and respected. Thank you.
There’s another game called Grime that has some “do a thing to make a platform move and also if you jump at the right time it can and will launch you” just came to mind.
Crystal theo and jellyfish: Hold grab (Also some advadanced techniques like jellyvator works in both of them) Deadly snowballs, mrs.oshiro and some baddeline attacks in ch 6: A missile appears where u were standing
The snowballs are obviously connected to Mr. Oshiro. Same idea: something shooting at you in a straight line every few seconds, so you gotta move up or down. Actually also uses idea from Badeline in that you can't stay in the same place too long.
i feel that the zipper blocks are more important as a tutorial for the clouds than springs are, since both zippers and clouds can give huge momentum with a well-timed jump and bouncy things are intuitive enough even without a tutorial
Another one that is a little more vague is Badeline from chapter 6 (Reflection). Her lasers actually resemble a bit the woodworms, just opposite. You can go in the same location twice, but you can't stay in one place too long (the projectiles aren't really like this, but I have no idea what they are like). Also dashing into stuff can be found everywhere in the game, that does not really need much explanation. In the last few rooms, she starts moving around platforms and walls, which behave like the zippers from chapter 1, except they don't wait for the player to do anything, they just go.
I would say that the laser is basically an instant-speed Oshiro moving along a diagonal. Staying in the same line as the laser (like for Oshiro) leads to death and you should dodge to avoid it.
Think about this, theo prepares you for the jelly. It teaches you how to throw it, that it can go through spinners (circle spikes) and other dangerous objects, and that it can activate touch and dash switches. The jelly expands upon that with adding gliding and gaining hight. And the gaining hight part is technically possible with theo, although less affective.
I only now learned that Badeline isn't rushing to catch you but only follows. I've died way too many times just because I was hurrying to "not get caught".
6:45 the jellyfish are connected to trapped theo, which is ofc connected to theo. Theo is a friendly character which shows up in chapters for story, when Theo gets trapped we wanna help him. The game introduces us to carrying things. This changes move mechanics as now we can't climb and dash while we hold Theo, but we can throw/drop him. Also here if Theo dies we fail so the game gets us used to looking after something. Also Theo has different rules of what kills him while he's stuck/protected so stuff like spikes he'll just go through no issues. Next with the jellyfish it uses that concept of carrying things, except now it adds that the jellyfish isn't essential to look after always, so when we have to look after the jellyfish it isn't a new concept, and it adds floating, slow fall, and new movement. It keeps some Theo crystal mechanics, like being able to drop, dash, and catch for more momentum (working this out with Theo would make jellyfish even easier while learning). So yeah the jellyfish isn't out of place it's on the stack of progression too.
I'd argue that a better connection with the clouds is the fire blocks in the core. same kind of timing your jump, but the fire blocks can have you grab them from the side too
The jelly blocks from level 2 teach you about dashing. Level 1 doesn't really require you to dash a lot but level 2 teaches you about how some blocks reset your dash and how to manage your dash properly. If you dash too many times in level 1 you can just touch the ground to get it back but sometimes in level 2 if you dash too early, you won't be able to get through a block and you'll have to die to get the dash back. I think that skill of dash management is used a lot in the summit with the springs and crystals. The best example of dash management is in chapter 7c where you can only use your dash. The entire final screen is in the air and you have no breathing room to touch the ground or backtrack. Level 2 perfectly prepares you for this this all the dashing puzzles and the anxiety of badeline chasing you. It's the game telling you that you have to go forward. Level 1 felt almost like an open world exploration whereas certain sections in level 2 are very linear. Also the weird blocks in the core are like a mix between the zippers in level 1 and the clouds in level 4. Their bounciness and momentum is almost identical to clouds but their multidirectionality and the fact that you have to grab onto them is similar to zippers. Also the ice blocks that are destroyed when you step on them are a lot like Oshiro, snowballs and the pufferfish to me.
Id argue jellyfish, snowballs and dreams blocks are all connected to something. Jellyfish are like carrying theo, but while carrying it you fave the low gravity from the summits vertical wind. Snowballs are like oshiro but without the warning before he attacks. And dream blocks are in the zipper-dash block-kevin-feather chain. You can control where you dash, but not for how long, unlike kevins.

There’s another game called Grime that has some “do a thing to make a platform move and also if you jump at the right time it can and will launch you” just came to mind.
Crystal theo and jellyfish: Hold grab (Also some advadanced techniques like jellyvator works in both of them)
Deadly snowballs, mrs.oshiro and some baddeline attacks in ch 6: A missile appears where u were standing
UA-cam recommended doing gods work
1:17 Dimension by Creo. Man I play way to much Geometry Dash
The snowballs are obviously connected to Mr. Oshiro. Same idea: something shooting at you in a straight line every few seconds, so you gotta move up or down. Actually also uses idea from Badeline in that you can't stay in the same place too long.
i just finished climbing to the summit on bsides and i SWEAR thats where i thought this was going . good video!
Mr. Oshiro got you ready for the snowballs
This was a great video and it needs more recognition.
i feel that the zipper blocks are more important as a tutorial for the clouds than springs are, since both zippers and clouds can give huge momentum with a well-timed jump and bouncy things are intuitive enough even without a tutorial
You say that the snowball is random and unrelated, but it's just like Mr. Oshiro in chapter 2, just from the front not the back
The snowballs might be similar to Oshiro? Jumping on its top, moving in a straight line, killing you.
The script/voiceover for this video wasnt great but wow! The visuals were really well made! Keep it up!
As a GD fan, dimension in this video was funny
I was looking for this comment
I only now learned that Badeline isn't rushing to catch you but only follows. I've died way too many times just because I was hurrying to "not get caught".
I think there could be an argument for a connection between the snowballs and angry oshiro
I’ve always known that Celeste had some part of this tutorial, but I didn’t know it stretches to so many things.
I'd argue that a better connection with the clouds is the fire blocks in the core. same kind of timing your jump, but the fire blocks can have you grab them from the side too
A very good point
I though Wile e Coyote was a timeless classic. I'm shocked people growing up don't know about him anymore.
