You have a great way of putting together all the random thoughts jumbled in my 62 year brain and simplifying them in a concise way that's easy to understand. It took me 117 days and 17 videos to reach the magical 1000 subscriber mark this week and it's been eye opening. I still haven't nailed down a concrete niche and that's ok. I'm leaning into leaving my legacy for my family and hope to entertain a few people while doing so.
Haha. Am 59. Been on UA-cam for over 10 years, have a few hundred videos, (mostly original animated content) still only have 365 subscribers. But I get it. my stuff is kind of weird. Probably a niche audience I've still yet to find. Still, I just keep plugging away.

After 1200 vids and nearly 2k subs, you reach the point, "I just do this as a creative release, it makes me feel good!" and if people want to watch great, if not.... who cares? Just do it for your own pleasure first and foremost.
UA-cam is based on the universal principle that if you want to receive, you must give first, and not a little. I love videos of UA-camrs telling the truth and what they have learned on their journey.
Great points! The first one is especially important for UA-camrs just starting out: "Your family and friends don't care that you started a UA-cam channel." Learned this lesson earlier this year. I got virtually zero support from friends & family on FB/Insta, and it was demoralizing for a while... UNTIL I had a couple videos go viral and then quickly realized, oh wait... THESE are my peeps! They *get it*. Whether they're existing friends/fam or *new* friends/followers... it's ULTRA important to surround yourself with people who are supportive, encouraging, and generally interested in what you're doing/creating. They're *out there*... you just gotta put yourself out there until they finally see your stuff and connect with your content (and you). It feels great when it happens, but yeah... it can take a whiiiiile. Just keep going!
Virginia, I love your channel and have gotten a lot out of them. I can really relate to what you're saying. My best friend has supported my UA-cam efforts from the very beginning. Even before I posted my first video. But other than him, nobody cares. I view UA-cam as a business, but when you're 71 years old and you tell someone you're a UA-cam Creator, it's like...."that's nice, it's good to have a hobby." I think i need to find some other creators to network with. Keep up the great work. Ralph Jones.
Great content and SO true. Those closest to you usually have no idea the work that goes into the doing of videos. Thanks for always the solid content. I appreciate all the tips and insights.
I’ve been watching your videos and using the info. One of the best things has been where to put text on the thumbnail! A small tip but great! My views and subs have gone way up!
These are great tips!! I’m at 600 subs which is amazing and look forward to growing! I didn’t think you used your hands too much. You always seem very natural and relaxed.
Virginia! As a fellow former TV gal I found this video SO validating and refreshing. I’m right there with you in that I just assumed my TV experience would make my channel grow faster. Boy was I wrong. UA-cam has humbled me in more ways than I could ever imagine. Thanks for speaking the truth and inspiring me to keep going even when I feel like my videos are getting no views!!
I'm just about to start my own channel and I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this honest insight from an experienced youtuber & TV personality. Thank you!
Very true, strangely, just doing videos has got me hired by friends to help them with their marketing, an unexpected side gig not related to my business channel at all.
Now THIS was a bunch of great advice! Refreshing to hear from a perspective different from most "regular" people ie having a background in TV. It sounds like it should be a perfect fit but UA-cam seems to be different in how we want information delivered. More personal. Also, the new calmer version of you without getting loud and yelling is light years better. I actually liked your previous content but the exaggerated and loud tone made me stop watching your videos. Now you're informative and interesting without going overboard, great job! Subscribed.
We would post a photo of our listener in Studio. The person we were talking to. Another name trick. Before you talk on camera, ASK the question. The one you"re about to answer. "Virginia, who are you exactly, and why are you here?" "How do I get more Subs?" etc
Thanks for sharing these insights, Virginia! I'm a small creator myself, and I've definitely felt some of these truths along the way. Your honesty and willingness to share your experiences are truly inspiring. I'm going to keep these lessons in mind as I continue to grow my channel. Thanks again!
Thank you so much! As a new creator, I feel overwhelmed with all the advice out there. It’s been exhausting, but I truly appreciate you taking the time to make this video.🙏
Great Video virginia! We are rebranding our channel a little since it has begun growing. Love seeing others out there learning the knowledge and applying it. =D
You and Rob the Maritimer were my biggest help in my starting my UA-cam channel. My channel monetized after only 5 videos and it’s because of your valuable “how to” videos. This video is so good and the advice is right on. Love your channel.
Thank you Virginia, also for your honesty. This is the first video on how to grow on UA-cam which I actually watched until the end for a very long time. You made me laugh out a few times. Keep on going….❤😊
Great video, Virginia! You made me LOL when you were messing up the intro and finally looked at the camera and said, "Stop it." This is me every week! I could put together a 5-hour video of outtakes of me saying "Stop it!" 😂
Hi Virginia…I’ve always loved your videos! Absolutely never once thought you were loud or overused your hands. Who are these people making such comments! Hand gestures are good…and some people have their own issues and struggle to express themselves…your perceived ‘loudness’ is triggering for them. I do wonder what percentage of people who commented said this…(very low in reality?). You’re a very creative and very sensitive person. Make sure you create boundaries and taking onboard constructive criticism is sensible…depending on who is giving the criticism. I’m on Instagram and your videos were my favourite when I was first starting out. They were really helpful! You’re great! Seriously! My family has zilch interest in my reels too! 😊❤
Your channel has been very helpful. I ran into your channel a couple of weeks ago. My channel has been off to a slow start which has been slightly frustrating to say the least. Great points!! I don’t understand the whole “easy mode” phenomena. I’ve been doing UA-cam for 4 years now and FINALLY got monetized this past year after treating my channel less as a hobby and more like a business. I make a vlog series about “life in my 40s”, not gonna lie, it’s a lot of hard work and can be very frustrating at times. Especially when you don’t see the views or growth the you want. My only advice is to keep learning and improving with each video.
I find your videos super interesting and full of information, however this video made me realise that I want to take things slowly. Growing super fast, getting more subscribers, making more videos, I just realised it would just put a lot of pressure and suck all the fun out of it. I will apply your tips for sure, but I want to enjoy the process without putting too much pressure on the outcome. Thanks for sharing all your wisdom❤
Luuuuuuuuve this! My channel is fairly new but I sooooo needed this direction to go slightly beyond sharing tips and info about creating funny women greeting cards to expand what I share that may be related...but will pull more views in because basically it will be more "Me!" For instance, I could share how a card is born from a unified experience and how to look at situations with humor... That's what I think you stress most..., plan and follow direction but most importantly BE YOU!
The tip about saying someone’s name is a very good one. I’ve started my cleaning channel and do voiceovers. I also (this sounds crazy) started doing vocal warm ups and stretching out my lips! 😂So this is very helpful. Thank you.
I was about to post me starting a fast and this video popped up and just made me think a little. I was going to post every day for the next week but you made some good points.
Great advice! I've certainly changed my tonality over time, but feel like I can refine it further. I'll try the name trick and see if it helps. Thanks! 😊
Really good course Virginia you are so talking to me this morning, on my way to work. So I tried logging and those were my lowest performing videos because people only wanna hear from me how to grow on UA-cam. I don’t know if I’ll keep logging once a month is what I do Because I need to make best use of my time.
Very true. One of my friends gets it, as he's now an experienced UA-camr and we support each other. Thanks to your tips, UA-cam has now sent me emails to congratulate me on my new subs, even though I haven't had time to share much yet. Hopefully many more next year!
Wow, you are amazing. Great video, great information, great personality and a beautiful person to look at. Thank you for sharing this great information, I can only imagine how awesome your course is. Appreciate you. I have subscribed to your channel and look forward to hearing more from you. May God continue to bless you.
I’ve been doing videos 6 years ago about paper crafts. Had a bigger following and engagement in Instagram. UA-cam has changed so much in 6 years. By the way great lessons. TFS
These are great tips. I have a question: it seems like once my channel monetized fully with ads, my views dropped way off. Is this a real thing? I am baffled because I am not doing anything differently and even the click through rate and watch time will be good, but it doesn't look like UA-cam is suggesting my videos to non-subscribers as much once I got ads. Would love to see a video if that is the case on having to rebuild somehow to have YT push videos out again.
Great video, Virginia! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and tips! You Tube provides us an opportunity to grow as well as help others. For that I am truly grateful, if we are able to help just one person- it's all worth it! You just helped me! ♥🎀
Virginia, this is pure gold! 🌟 Thank you for sharing these hard-earned lessons-it’s so inspiring to see your journey and how much you’ve grown. The tips and truth bombs are exactly what I needed to hear right now. 🙌 What’s one thing you wish you had started doing earlier in your UA-cam journey?

Really good course Virginia you are so talking to me this morning, on my way to work. So I tried logging and those were my lowest performing videos because people only wanna hear from me how to grow on UA-cam. I don’t know if I’ll keep logging once a month is what I do Because I need to make best use of my time.
I am about to start an educational channel and this is so helpful. Thank you so much ❤
Great tips as always, focusing more in 2025 on utube & definitely helps. Thank you
❤ bring on 2025
I’m so glad you found it helpful!
YES!
Excellent video, some genuine useful nuggets of information that i will implement in my future videos
Thanks for the insights, just getting my real estate channel off the ground. Averaging 4-6 views, feel like a rock star when one hits 20 :)
Very true. One of my friends gets it, as he's now an experienced UA-camr and we support each other. Thanks to your tips, UA-cam has now sent me emails to congratulate me on my new subs, even though I haven't had time to share much yet. Hopefully many more next year!
Thank you Virginia!
This is a really great video with insightful tips.. thanks for sharing!
Love the video. I'm going to use the name trick to make it personal!
Wow, you are amazing. Great video, great information, great personality and a beautiful person to look at. Thank you for sharing this great information, I can only imagine how awesome your course is. Appreciate you. I have subscribed to your channel and look forward to hearing more from you. May God continue to bless you.
Thank you for this! Good content!
I’ve been doing videos 6 years ago about paper crafts. Had a bigger following and engagement in Instagram. UA-cam has changed so much in 6 years. By the way great lessons. TFS
small youtuber here ! first time seeing your content !
I know you said you don’t vlog anymore but do you have any tips for vlog specific videos?
Great video, Virginia! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and tips! You Tube provides us an opportunity to grow as well as help others. For that I am truly grateful, if we are able to help just one person- it's all worth it! You just helped me! ♥🎀
Great video!
I predict the MOST popular segment will be at the 9:05 mark! OMG- You dropped a FANTASTIC nugget "the name trick" - it's priceless. thank you!
Superb video, awesome advice, thank you so much.
Great video! Some are better than others, but this is one of your best to me.
Why thank you! What made you like this over the others of mine?
@@ThisIsVirginiaKerr There were just a few things that I've heard before that "stuck" this morning.
