  • You have heard the phrase 'A developer is only as good as his last app', but looking back at all the apps I've written over the years I strongly disagree with that statement!
    This is the first in a series of showcase videos where I showcase some of my favourite 4Pockets apps. I know a lot of iOS musicians are new to the scene, and you will be seeing these apps for the first time. There are so many great apps on iOS, and it is easy to forget those apps that made the eco-system such a fantastic source of fun and creativity.
    Those interested in Euclidean should checkout the theory paper by David Collett which is linked below. This paper goes into great detail about the difference between Euclidean, PolyMeter and PolyRhythm and PolyTempo modes, and gives some practical examples and ideas on rhythm creation using the app.

    Hey Paul I love your apps - straight up I have like 90% of them.
    I did want to say something since you’re showcasing all these beauties here: it would be very appreciated if you could offer an alternative way of switching “pages” on your apps - especially on iPhone it’s kinda hard to swipe on the very “limited” area that you’ve programmed to sort of work as the slider allowing you to switch pages - could you consider implementing a “buttons” switcher for the pages? Nothing too fancy, just a way of simply clicking a button to swap pages. It would honestly improve all your apps tremendously especially considering how little there is to it.
    I would also suggest reworking the overall window UI you have going so that it is more manageable on iPhone, but your synths are so complex and full of controls so I completely understand if this one aspect isn’t really doable… however the page switcher I think is certainly something you could add to your “core engine” in only a few days at most and it honestly would be a very welcome “option” for layout switching.
    PS: thanks for everything, you’re a magician my dude 🙏🏼

    I soo soo enjoyed all 4 Pocket apps have created many songs with them that have made it to my first CD Spinning Globes and other projects docked in my Alesis IO Dock that i still use.. And Paul i can whole hearty concluded that i still use them as i still have a working Ipad 1. The reason is they still beat all the other apps in so many ways. you are a music genius and i see that what you developed then became an standard of inspiration to new app developers.
    i sincerly thank you for all you created and joy i still today have composing with all 4Pockets apps you developed.
    Kind healthy and musical greetings from Finland.

    Thanks Paul for this first of what I hope will be several showcase videos. I have often thought it would be great to have an index of your apps. The index would address questions like, “I am trying to do something (fill in the blank), which app or apps can I use?” or “I am having this problem. Which app or apps will help me solve this problem?”.

      Yes my friend, it seems the older apps get forgotten so I do plan on doing a series of these videos to highlight what I consider the best.

    I have most of your wonderful apps and at first hesitated at the price of the newest Strings app. However, not for long . When I realized how iOS really needed more physical modeling software and more importantly the incredible value of most of the 4 Pockets apps . And the in-depth tutorials and the free upgrades and the frequent sales, on and on. So I thought yes why not pay for this new String app (which I mostly use for bells , mallets and tonal percussion cause it sounds great) if only to support this unique , talented and extremely hardworking developer. Happy to do it.

    Nice one Paul. I haven’t used evolver for ages. I had worked out how to use it as a live arranger from the bass side of my accordion, I think I even made a video about it, but in truth while I love the app, Im too stupid to fully understand it. Nearly finished my move now so hopefully I will have more time to make music again, especially with the excellent string lab, which is great when paired with strummer fx.

    Great video. Some of my faves are in there! Evolver is criminally underappreciated - it pairs really well with Progressions and Scaler 2 - just hook it up with a chord progression, pick a Performance, and you've got a whole band and a song in a few minutes! And NuRack - once I sat down and broke through my initial confusion suddenly everything clicked - it's like the 50-in-one swiss army knife with the magnifying glass, saw, and all that fancy stuff under the hood just waiting to be tapped. The "cool" factor on these apps is off the charts. Thanks Paul! 👍

    Neon is a favorite app of mine, but i still think that Neon can be a bigger app if it had the option to work with different samples at the same time, instead of just one at the time, basically something like Koala sampler, also the options of having a sequencer/piano roll like Helium too, plus a sample root key note finder Chord Ai,,, if that the case would think Neon would've been the greatest sampler ever made !!
    but i guess that would be just a thought and not a reality 😭
    anyhow great video Paul 👍🏽

    • @PaultheMusicMan

      There is no build in arpegiator in Helium as it is a MIDI recorder I expect most people will be recording MIDI from external arpegiators.

      @@paulsargeant8179 Helium is an AUv3 so needs to be hosted inside another app like AUM. You can easily route MIDI keyboards in and out of Helium using AUM but it totally depends on which host app you use. Take a look through my videos at the Hulium playlist. I'm not a music producer as such.so I don't have any materials online.

    Hi Paul, I’ve just purchased evolver fx. It looks brilliant but I have a problem that I hope you can help me with.
    On the performance tab, chord pad I want to generate a chord set. I can select the root note ok but the dialogue box that pops up is empty and no chord set is generated. Also I can’t assign a chord to a pad. The assign box turns yellow but when I play a chord using the on screen keyboard and press a pad nothing happens.
    Any idea what I’m doing wrong? Thanks

    • @PaultheMusicMan
      @PaultheMusicMan  8 місяців тому +1

      Yes, I can reproduce this error and can say with confidence this is an iOS17 issue which I need to fix. If you display another popup too quickly iOS17 doesn't add the backing view controller correctly. Annoying issue that Apple need to resolve, but I do have a solution and will get a new version posted over the next day or two.

      @@PaultheMusicMan Thanks Paul that’s brilliant! I have indeed just updated ipadOS to 17.0.3!
      Really nice video by the way, it’s good to see the brilliant apps you’ve created over the years and I look forward to seeing your next one! I wish that I had a fraction of your knowledge and experience. I’m only a novice but I really like the look of EvolverFX and want to take the time to learn it properly (I’ve got plenty of time now that I’ve retired!). I’ve also recently purchases Scaler 2 and would like to use the two in conjunction with one another. I only have GarageBand to work with but I’m having fun and that’s the main thing,
      Thanks again and keep up the good work, it’s really appreciated. I’ve liked and subscribed so I shouldn’t miss any of your excellent videos 😀👍

      @@gm-kp8is If your open to experimentation I highly recommend AUM, its one of those pieces of software I have never regretted buying and I am in awe of Jonatan the author who write this fantastic piece of software. It brings together so many great apps and you can do far more in this app than any other. I've submitted the app to Apple so it 'should' go live over the weekend (hopefully). Thanks also for the recommendation. I kept looking at AUM but couldn’t decide if it was right for me. I do like to tinker but I would also like to produce some actual compositions as well. I still have an awful lot to learn with regard to the technical aspects of midi and audio as I’m a bit late to the game!

    • @PaultheMusicMan
      @PaultheMusicMan  9 місяців тому +1

      You can export WAV files including slices but not loop points since there are very few apps that support it and there are too many ways to embed loop points. In strummer, change the input mode to Piano to Guitar Chords, then you can play in your own chords via MIDI. The only issue with this is you need to register the chord before the beat.

      Paul, I have long regarded you as the reigning genius of iPad music creation. I have no idea how you can keep coming up with so many varied and beautiful ways of creating music on an iPad, much less turn them into such elegant and useable apps. i may have missed a couple, but I make a point of buying each of your apps as soon as you release them as an expression of my support for your work. You create them faster than I can absorb them, but just knowing they are there and what they can do feels like I always have unopened presents under the Christmas tree. I’m going to go open one of them right now and see what I can create with the amazing Euclidean app.
