Dr Brown is so clear minded and asks a very simple question *"Who else could be so highly exalted over Abraham, Moses and the angels?"* Simple and easy question from scripture. The horrendous truth is that the Christian Jesus was manufactured from plundered sources, re-purposed for the needs of the early Church. It is not with a human being that the Jesus myth begins. Christ is not a deified man but a humanised god who happened to be given the name Yeshu. Those real Jesuses, those that lived and died within normal human parameters, may have left stories and legends behind, later cannibalised by Christian scribes as source material for their own hero, but it is not with any flesh and blood rebel/rabbi/wonder-worker that the story begins. Rather, its genesis is in theology itself.

The suffering servant is clear if you simply read the preceding chapters. Isaiah 44;1 But now hear, O Jacob my servant , Israel whom I have chosen! Isaiah 44;21 Remember these things, O Jacob, and Israel, for you are my servant ; I formed you; you are my servant; O Israel, you will not be forgotten by me. Isaiah 45;4 For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen, I called you by your name, I name you, though you do not know me. I don't have the energy to check the others given how lengthy this reply will be, but there is a definite narrative shift at verse 5: "And now YHWH says-he who formed me in the womb to be his servant to bring Jacob back to him, to gather Israel back to himself..." This isn't talking about Israel, so 49:3 doesn't extend far enough to draw any sort of unbroken narrative from.) Moroever, the context of the suffering in 53 is of another entity suffering _for_ Israel. Isaiah starts using phrases like "for the transgression of my people" and "pierced for our trangressions": how is Israel the servant suffering for the sake of Isaiah's people when the sufferer is being portrayed as a separate being from Isaiah's people? There is also the textual evidence that Israel is referred as a female. The suffering servant is a male. Israel is the Daughter of Zion, yet the suffering servant is "he". Now that's especially important when you recognize that a sharp subject change happen at 52:13: "for YHWH will go before you". Then in the next verse the servant spoken is male (not a daughter) and he's given the language of divine exaltation. More importantly, it isn't just Christians who interpret this figure as a human being. It's messianic interpretation goes back to Judaism. In fact, I've even seen it said, and I've had it said to me, that the prophecy is about a Persian king.

@@MrArtist1971 The problem with that statement is that at the very least the idea of a diune YHWH is present even in Torah. It's also present very clearly in prophecy, ergo the Ancient Days sharing his divinity with the "one like a son of man". Or the divine exaltation of the suffering servant which is extremely similar to the language of the prophecy in Daniel. It has nothing to do with deceit, but rather one's willingness to see that even those who wrote the Old Testament were struggling to wrap their minds around the trinitarian nature of YHWH. If that openness isn't there, the truth evades perception.

Rabbi Asher keeps saying that this text is hyperbolic. The definition of hyperbole is, “Excessive exaggeration”. This text is a clear reading without exaggeration which clearly demonstrates that it is meant to be interpreted as literal.
The builders rejected the cornerstone and then the Israelis house fell down. But then the Cornerstone was offered to the Gentiles and the Gentiles built a temple in their hearts that this world will and cannot undermine. Narrow is the path that leads to salvation.

N B N B, I don’t see any of those particular words (“them in verse 8” and “deaths in verse 9”) as you say in Isaiah 53. Are you sure you’re talking about Isaiah 53 or some other chapter? Anyway, I see actually 3 “Servants” in the Scroll of Isaiah: (1), Cyrus (2). Israel (3). The Messiah for example the Scripture says, in Isaiah 49:5 and 6: “Now says Yahveh who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant, to bring Jacob again to him, and that Israel be gathered to Him (for I am honorable in the eyes of Yahweh, and my God is become my strength); yes, He says, "It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give you for a light to the nations, that you may be my salvation to the end of the earth." So here we have this particular “Servant” (which the prophet Isaiah was speaking on behalf of Yahveh), was “formed in the womb” by Yahveh Himself, and was later to “to bring back Jacob (Israel) to Him (Yahveh)” so that “Israel would be restored to Him” (or gathered to Him). This Servant shall be “glorious (וְאֶכָּבֵד֙) in the eyes of Yahveh” and Yahveh “will be the Servant’s Strength.” Then the prophet Isaiah says, “And He (Yahveh) says: “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give you for a light to the nations, that you may be my salvation to the end of the earth." Therefore, The Servant HERE, could not be Israel, because at this time Israel would be out of His Favor, but is in need to be “brought back to Him” and be “restored.” Also, this cannot be Isaiah the prophet because the language used by Isaiah describes someone else. @@David-kk4dr In Isaiah 53:8 according to the Hebrew text we read: "For the transgression of my people a plague befell *them (lamo)."* And in verse 9 the Hebrew word for "death" is plural so it's literally "deaths" although it should be noted that plural in the Hebrew Bible doesn't always denote a plural in number but rather a plural in intensity. But still, the plural form of "death" here makes the most sense in the context of the passage and with the servant being called "them" in verse 8. Regarding Isaiah 49, the Prophet Isaiah is speaking here about himself. The primary purpose of the prophets was to the bring the people back to God and this is what the text is speaking about here. Even in this passage however the servant is referred to as Israel (verse 3). Isaiah is singled out because he was among the righteous of Israel who are to be a light to the nations. And the righteous of Israel are also tasked with bringing the rest of Israel back to God and that's why read that the servant/Israel of verse 3 is tasked with bringing Israel back to God (verse 5).

N B @ N B, thank you for your response. What I see in verse 8 is the Servant is condemned to death. He would be “taken away” and “cut off from the land of the living.” The latter verb (נִגְזַר֙) “He was cut off” is always used of a violent and premature death (as in 2 Kings 6:4 cutting timber or trees; 2 Chron. 26:21 King Uzziah; Psa. 88:5 regarding those who go down to the pit etc.). What is not so clear in verse 8 is how the Servant’s death is connected to his “arrest” (מֵעֹ֤צֶר the very first word in verse 8) which word is also found in Psalm 107:39, and which is defined as “to restrain; to shut up as in imprison” see also 2 Kings 17:4. So, verse 8 begins מֵעֹ֤צֶר וּמִמִּשְׁפָּט֙ (“From prison and from judgement...”). Therefore, the main possible interpretations are: (1). “Without” arrest and “without” judgment the servant was taken away, that is, he was not legally arrested and did not receive a fair trial. Or, (2). from the midst of the arrest (confinement, restraint, or oppression) and “judgement” he was taken away by death. And lastly, (3). By reason of arrest and a judgement he was taken away, that is, he was arrested and then sentenced to die. If you notice that in verse 5 it was the Servant’s suffering only, which was substitutionary; but in verse 8 it is his death itself. The servant would become, potentially the substitution of all those who committed “sins” and “iniquities” (our sins and our iniquities, v.5) “for the sin of My people (Israel) who deserved the punishment” (v.8). Again, I repeat this is my opinion and I don’t like quarreling, but I don’t mind respectful and honorable reason and debate. Shalom, David.

God identifies His servants by name. The suffering servant in Isaiah 53 is not named, because God already names His servant many times in the passages leading up to Isaiah 53. Additionally, Isaiah 53 is the main passage the Christian Church hangs their prophetic understanding of Jesus on. If the writers of the new testament thought Isaiah 53 was a clear reference to Jesus, then why wasn’t Isaiah 53 quoted at length or by passage all over the place?? We see the servant quoted by name extensively in Isaiah. It's just so clear.
Isaiah 53 is a complete biography of Jesus Christ, His life, ministry, death, resurrection and prophetic telling of the Gospel. If we lost the New Testament, this one passage would allow us to reconstruct enough of the Gospel to bring someone to salvation.

That's prophecy is for 483 years then the clock stops short 7 years cause the prophecy first told was for 490 years . So then you see the Messiah is cut off (Die) just like Isaiah 53 says. No prophets and no Halakhah may contradict His Revealed Will (Torah / Nomos in Greek) for Israel (and Sons and Daughters of Noah). I think the paradoxes seen in Isaiah 53 are just so beautiful. So like God to say things like this: ... Who shall declare his generation? For he was cut off out of the land of the living ... he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days ... ... He made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death ... So, whomever is being spoken of here would (1) have no children, and yet have children; (2) be brought to the grave as a wicked person, and yet laid in the grave of the rich. Who else could this be speaking of except for our Jesus? And if this is referring to a general group of martyrs, how do these great details apply to do many people? And if this is all hyperbolic language, does not that take away from the uniqueness of the message? Why, then, would Isaiah say that this prophecy is something that people "had not [before] heard" and will have to "consider" (Isaiah 52:15), and what would cause Isaiah to ask who would believe the report if it's just hyperbolic language which could apply to any martyrs?

The Messiah has to be from the line of David. He had to come from Christ era. He couldn't possibly come now, because it would be, absolutely impossible to prove that your from the " line of David" because the temples been destroyed. Thats where the records were kept . As a nation, the people of Israel, while desiring the advent of the Messiah, were so far separated from God in heart and life that they could have no true conception of the character or mission of the promised Redeemer. Instead of desiring redemption from sin, and the glory and peace of holiness, their hearts were fixed upon deliverance from their national foes, and restoration to worldly power. They looked for Messiah to come as a conqueror, to break every yoke, and exalt Israel to dominion over all nations. This is a perfect example of the power of a "good relationship". Rabbi Meza and Dr. Brown have a well established friendly relationship. The subject speaking in the beginning of Isaiah 53 are the "kings of the nations" who will have their mouths opened of astonishment upon seeing Israel (the smallest amongst the powerful nations) raised and exalted. The kings of nations that had Israel captive are saying among themselves : "because of the transgressions of my people he was afflicted". The Midrash does not mention anything about the Messiah in Isaiah 53. This is wrong! What is said is that "My Servant" (EXPLICITLY DESCRIBED AS BEING ISRAEL SEVERAL TIMES BY ISAIAH) will be raised higher than Moses, higher than the angels, higher than the prophets of Israel. Know that according to ANY RABBINICAL COMMENTARY the "MY SERVANT" TERM USED IN ISAIAH 41-53 IS ISRAEL, AS IT IS WRITTEN EXPLICITLY IN THE TEXT OF ISAIAH. The term "MY SERVANT" does not change from Isaiah 41 through Isaiah 53, it refers always to ISRAEL. Rabbi Meza is right about the word "Messiah" does not appear NOT EVEN ONCE IN THE WHOLE TANAKH referring to the figure of the Messiah of the Jewish people. ALL the verses where the word "mashiach" appear in the Tanakh refer to a specific "anointed" person, not to the Messiah himself. Ezekiel 34:12 , it is very interesting the fact that you mixed truly Messianic verses (Ezekiel 34:23-24) with verses that report what will happen to Israel ("My servant") in the Messianic era (Isaiah 53:11-12). Well, let's start with Ezekiel 34-23-24; these verses talk about "My servant David will be a shepherd over them", indicating that the Messiah will be a direct descendant from king David, and this fact is repeated over and over again by all the prophets of Israel. G-d promised King David that his throne will never lack a king, meaning that the one who will be king over the Jewish people and lead the Jews in the ways of G-D will descend from him (King David). The "shepherd" means simply "the leader", "the one who guides". In fact, the verse 34:24 mentions exactly the word "prince" (as we can read below). And this "shepherd" ("leader") will lead the Jewish people over the mountains of the Land Israel, where they will inhabit in COMPLETE PEACE (thing that hasn't happened). Indeed, after the first century C.E. (period of the Jesus) the Jewish people was expelled to the long exile in the four corners of the world, and have been suffering ALL KINDS OF ATROCITIES by the nations. Isaiah is narrating the trajectory of Israel from chapter 41 through 53. Israel (the righteous ones) is defined explicitly several times as "My servant" from chapters 41 through 53, and talks prophetically about their exile in Babylon. The righteous "Jews" were exiled in Babylon together with the wicked "Jews" for over 70 years due to the transgressions of the wicked ones amongst them. And all that generation that went to Babylon died in Babylon, and never returned to Jerusalem. Even the righteous "Jews" were buried together with the transgressors in Babylon ("because he bared his soul unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors"). There was no punishment of the righteous with death whatsoever. This is an idea invented by ignorant Christianity of first centuries C.E. that has lasted until today. The righteous was carried away to Babylon together with the transgressors to instill the good ways of G-d among the people Israel. The righteous ones should bring back the ones astray. The purpose of G-d allowing the righteous ones ("My servant") to be sent to the exile was rather a support and example to the wicked ones. Only when they all together realized that ONLY ONE way of justice existed (the way of G-D of Israel), they were allowed to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple and the city destroyed by Nabuchadnaser. But the generation that returned was born in Babylon, it was not the same who went unto the exile. What I see in many is their hesitancy to honestly debate the possibility that Jesus could really be the Messiah/Chosen One because of fear of rejection by family, friends or community. But who we must fear more is the rejection of God. “Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe.” Proverbs 29:25
It's good to see that what we have is a respectful debate, even in the midst of a strong disagreement. I think Dr. Brown clearly wins the argument, but unfortunately winning an argument has never closed this gap.

He came to his own and his own received him not. Having eyes to see, they do not see, having EARS to hear, they do not hear. In the other words, Jesus as the Arm of the Lord signifies His Omnipotent and proactive nature. John 1:3 says, "All things were made by Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made."

Hebrew word saw-eer means hairy or goat and is used in Lev 16:5, the ram represents Isaac, as in Gen 22:13. Hebrew word aza-zel also means "strong one agaist God", or "God fighter", and is simmilar to the meaning of the name "Israel" the name given to Jacob in Gen 32:28 In the Yom Kippur ceremony we have represented Esau/Christians, Jacob/Jews, and Isaac/Jehoshua son of Joseph. The "common era, or Christian era" is a global Day of Attonment with one "saw-eer" sacrificed "for the pasha", and the other a scapegoat for the sins of humanity.

Embedded in the Ten Commandments there is a promise, the promise of Rest, Shabbat. All promises in the Bible are about the Messiah, and the Messiah is about Rest, Shabbat. In the Christian part of the Bible we have: "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." (Mat 11:28-30)

First promise is in Genesis 3:15, "the seed of the women", preparatory fulfillment of this promise was the birth of Isaac and his twin sons Esau and Jacob. Global Day of Atonement was on Golgotha, notice that on either side of the Messiah we have two sinners, it is a triune sacrifice for the sins of the world, the two sinners on either side of the Messiah represent, the Christian Church, and the Jewish nation. Same as in the Day of Atonement in Lev 16:5 we have a triune sacrifice, so on Golgotha we have triune sacrifice for the sins of the world, all three represent the One Messiah.

The Rabbi's stand, where the suffering servant is an ambiguous plural group (of messengers & prophets, possibly including Jesus as well) feels like "spiritualizing" a topic. The whole context of that section of Isaiah clearly speaks to the singular one, who would be high and lifted up. It sounded like the Rabbi's rebuttal to this is that the rewards for the messengers and prophets (on the other side of death) would be reflective of this "high and lifted up" simply because we don't know what those rewards are explicitly. I've had many conversations with people who read a verse and refuse to (or are blind to) see it for what it is saying, grammatically and contextually, so this doesn't surprise me. That being said, I'm curious if Rabbi Asher Meza were to "play it forward," on the opposing argument, whether seeing how precisely Jesus fulfills those verses exactly, and goes on to exactly fit so many others, if that the Rabbi might reconsider his view that Isaiah 53 is pluralistic & spiritualized? The Messiah has to be from the line of David. He had to come from Christ era. He couldn't possibly come now, because it would be, absolutely impossible to prove that your from the " line of David" because the temples been destroyed. Thats where the records were kept . I wish Rabbi Tovia Singer would debate more. He gives strong answers and convinces so many of his Jewish followers but he has rarely allowed his views to be held up to scrutiny by those in the know. The Servant song of Isaiah 53 parallels II Kings in parts concerning King Hezekiah . There are some who suggest that King Hezekiah suffered of the pigment distorting disease of old world leprosy as well. This narrative is the Kings and leaders that surrounded Judah during the stand down. Imagine the handful of survivors that told the tale of the Assyrian army completely devastated in this miraculous turn of events. Who would believe our report?
Rabbi Meza has unfortunately allowed himself to be boxed in ny giving his own limited interpretation of the "servant" as prophets and martyrs. The servant is better defined as the RIGHTEOUS REMNANT of Israel or the righteous Jews who are prepared to suffer for God's purpose. This definition will include messiahs and prophets, but not be limited to them. When Isaiah says that the "servant" will be lifted up,. he is saying that the righteous remnant of Jews, who survive the Assyrian persecution (which is the theme of Isaiah), will be thrive and prosper, and be lifted up above the Gentile nations that persecute them. Meza is right (and Brown wrong) that the "servant" is not an individual man.

I see the 'rabbi' making some assumptions which are not in the text. For example, he talks about prophets in Isaiah 53 when the text doesn't say so. He says it doesn't refer to one person when the text says 'My servant' and NOT 'servants'. Again, the text does not say 'his seeds' but the rabbi keeps saying his seeds. Where in the NT does it say that when one believes in Yeshua that He remains a Gentile? Isn't true circumcision a matter of the heart? Isn't a true Jew, one who has been circumcized by the Holy Spirit, permanently indwelling? Doesn't the word say that there is neither Jew nor Gentile but all are one? Cory Abouaf , It's not that He cancelled the sabbath for the Gentiles. He never gave the Sabbath to the Gentiles in the first place, only to the Jews. Bear in mind that He offered the Torah to all the nations, but only the Israelites (the Jews) accepted it. I don't know where or if the NT says who remains a Gentile and when, but that doesn't matter. What matters is what G-d says. No, true circumcision is not a matter of the heart. A true Jew is either one who was born of a Jewish mother, or one who has gone thru a kosher conversion. In the case of a man, that conversion is not kosher if the man has not been circumcised with the physical removal of the foreskin. Does the word say there is neither Jew nor Gentile? No, I don't think so, at least not here on earth. What vine? Gentiles are not part of Israel unless they have gone through an orthodox conversion, and obey all the commandments.

Rabbi Meza's interpretation of Isaiah 53 is actually something I've been entertaining for some time lately. I would take it a few different ways, however. I wouldn't say it is just the prophets and martyrs of the Jews, but the prophets and martyrs of the world. I would include Martin Luther King Jr., Socrates, Gandhi, and others as well. Many of the Righteous Among the Nations would be on this list. Whenever society becomes corrupted, God sends a messenger to warn them of their ways. But more often than not, the world hates those who call out their evil. But the evil needs to be called out because it leads the society to destruction if they do not repent. Perhaps the society will turn back after they are appalled by their evil, and how they treated the prophet who warned them (They will look on the one whom they have pierced). They will then turn from their sin in shame, thus their society will be saved (By his stripes we are healed). Other times they will not turn back and their society will be destroyed. Then the history books will recall the wisdom of the prophet and contrast it with the folly of the people (Therefore I will give him a portion among the great). Even with this interpretation, it is far from getting Jesus off the hook of being the subject of Isaiah 53. Rabbi Meza confirmed this, that Jesus would count in his interpretation. Even Jewish literature talks about the evil of the generation of Jesus' time, so the people were ripe for a prophet, and the very messages Jesus taught are exactly the kind that addressed the people's evil, -the rich pharisees exploiting the poor and acting righteous on the outside. But it cannot suffice to say that Jesus was only a prophet like Isaiah. He claimed to be God (or else his followers claimed him to be). If Jesus was not God, he is either a heretic, or his message got terribly corrupted. And since it seems his followers were genuinely convinced he did rise from the dead, then we must say his message was corrupted by God himself. So we cannot say Jesus was a mere prophet. Instead, I would take it a step further: not only is Jesus one among the many prophets Isaiah 53 is about, but he is the gold-standard. The archetype itself points to Jesus as the ultimate prophet.

I don't have the energy to check the others given how lengthy this reply will be, but there is a definite narrative shift at verse 5: "And now YHWH says-he who formed me in the womb to be his servant to bring Jacob back to him, to gather Israel back to himself..." This isn't talking about Israel, so 49:3 doesn't extend far enough to draw any sort of unbroken narrative from.)
Moroever, the context of the suffering in 53 is of another entity suffering _for_ Israel. Isaiah starts using phrases like "for the transgression of my people" and "pierced for our trangressions": how is Israel the servant suffering for the sake of Isaiah's people when the sufferer is being portrayed as a separate being from Isaiah's people?
There is also the textual evidence that Israel is referred as a female. The suffering servant is a male. Israel is the Daughter of Zion, yet the suffering servant is "he".
Now that's especially important when you recognize that a sharp subject change happen at 52:13: "for YHWH will go before you". Then in the next verse the servant spoken is male (not a daughter) and he's given the language of divine exaltation.
More importantly, it isn't just Christians who interpret this figure as a human being. It's messianic interpretation goes back to Judaism. In fact, I've even seen it said, and I've had it said to me, that the prophecy is about a Persian king.

@@MrArtist1971 The problem with that statement is that at the very least the idea of a diune YHWH is present even in Torah. It's also present very clearly in prophecy, ergo the Ancient Days sharing his divinity with the "one like a son of man". Or the divine exaltation of the suffering servant which is extremely similar to the language of the prophecy in Daniel.
It has nothing to do with deceit, but rather one's willingness to see that even those who wrote the Old Testament were struggling to wrap their minds around the trinitarian nature of YHWH. If that openness isn't there, the truth evades perception.

N B N B, I don’t see any of those particular words (“them in verse 8” and “deaths in verse 9”) as you say in Isaiah 53. Are you sure you’re talking about Isaiah 53 or some other chapter? Anyway, I see actually 3 “Servants” in the Scroll of Isaiah: (1), Cyrus (2). Israel (3). The Messiah for example the Scripture says, in Isaiah 49:5 and 6: “Now says Yahveh who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant, to bring Jacob again to him, and that Israel be gathered to Him (for I am honorable in the eyes of Yahweh, and my God is become my strength); yes, He says, "It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give you for a light to the nations, that you may be my salvation to the end of the earth."
So here we have this particular “Servant” (which the prophet Isaiah was speaking on behalf of Yahveh), was “formed in the womb” by Yahveh Himself, and was later to “to bring back Jacob (Israel) to Him (Yahveh)” so that “Israel would be restored to Him” (or gathered to Him). This Servant shall be “glorious (וְאֶכָּבֵד֙) in the eyes of Yahveh” and Yahveh “will be the Servant’s Strength.” Then the prophet Isaiah says, “And He (Yahveh) says: “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give you for a light to the nations, that you may be my salvation to the end of the earth." Therefore, The Servant HERE, could not be Israel, because at this time Israel would be out of His Favor, but is in need to be “brought back to Him” and be “restored.” Also, this cannot be Isaiah the prophet because the language used by Isaiah describes someone else. It also cannot be Cyrus because he was never “a Light to the Nations” and Yahveh’s “Salvation” to the end of the earth.” Only MY OPINION and I can say confidently that I was honest in my hermeneutical interpretation; for I desire the truth wherever IT leads. @@David-kk4dr In Isaiah 53:8 according to the Hebrew text we read: "For the transgression of my people a plague befell *them (lamo)."* And in verse 9 the Hebrew word for "death" is plural so it's literally "deaths" although it should be noted that plural in the Hebrew Bible doesn't always denote a plural in number but rather a plural in intensity. But still, the plural form of "death" here makes the most sense in the context of the passage and with the servant being called "them" in verse 8. Regarding Isaiah 49, the Prophet Isaiah is speaking here about himself. The primary purpose of the prophets was to the bring the people back to God and this is what the text is speaking about here. Even in this passage however the servant is referred to as Israel (verse 3). Isaiah is singled out because he was among the righteous of Israel who are to be a light to the nations. And the righteous of Israel are also tasked with bringing the rest of Israel back to God and that's why read that the servant/Israel of verse 3 is tasked with bringing Israel back to God (verse 5).

He would be “taken away” and “cut off from the land of the living.” The latter verb (נִגְזַר֙) “He was cut off” is always used of a violent and premature death (as in 2 Kings 6:4 cutting timber or trees; 2 Chron. 26:21 King Uzziah; Psa. 88:5 regarding those who go down to the pit etc.). What is not so clear in verse 8 is how the Servant’s death is connected to his “arrest” (מֵעֹ֤צֶר the very first word in verse 8) which word is also found in Psalm 107:39, and which is defined as “to restrain; to shut up as in imprison” see also 2 Kings 17:4. So, verse 8 begins מֵעֹ֤צֶר וּמִמִּשְׁפָּט֙ (“From prison and from judgement...”). Therefore, the main possible interpretations are: (1). “Without” arrest and “without” judgment the servant was taken away, that is, he was not legally arrested and did not receive a fair trial. Or, (2). from the midst of the arrest (confinement, restraint, or oppression) and “judgement” he was taken away by death. And lastly, (3). By reason of arrest and a judgement he was taken away, that is, he was arrested and then sentenced to die. If you notice that in verse 5 it was the Servant’s suffering only, which was substitutionary; but in verse 8 it is his death itself. The servant would become, potentially the substitution of all those who committed “sins” and “iniquities” (our sins and our iniquities, v.5) “for the sin of My people (Israel) who deserved the punishment” (v.8). Again, I repeat this is my opinion and I don’t like quarreling, but I don’t mind respectful and honorable reason and debate. Shalom, David.

The named, righteous servant is Jacob-Israel, who God said with clarity that God had: chosen, redeemed, glorified, named, will not cast off (Isaiah 41:8-9, Isaiah 44:1, Isaiah 44:21, Isaiah 45:4, Isaiah 48:20, Isaiah 49:3).

The Christian Roman Catholic and Christian protestant church religion attempt to teach you their mysterious, un-named servant and that this is a clear reference to Jesus. God identifies His servants by name. The suffering servant in Isaiah 53 is not named, because God already names His servant many times in the passages leading up to Isaiah 53.
Additionally, Isaiah 53 is the main passage the Christian Church hangs their prophetic understanding of Jesus on. If the writers of the new testament thought Isaiah 53 was a clear reference to Jesus, then why wasn’t Isaiah 53 quoted at length or by passage all over the place?? We see the servant quoted by name extensively in Isaiah. It's just so clear.

I think the paradoxes seen in Isaiah 53 are just so beautiful. So like God to say things like this:
... Who shall declare his generation? For he was cut off out of the land of the living ... he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days ...
... He made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death ...
So, whomever is being spoken of here would (1) have no children, and yet have children; (2) be brought to the grave as a wicked person, and yet laid in the grave of the rich.
Who else could this be speaking of except for our Jesus?
And if this is referring to a general group of martyrs, how do these great details apply to do many people?
And if this is all hyperbolic language, does not that take away from the uniqueness of the message? Why, then, would Isaiah say that this prophecy is something that people "had not [before] heard" and will have to "consider" (Isaiah 52:15), and what would cause Isaiah to ask who would believe the report if it's just hyperbolic language which could apply to any martyrs?
Never got around to Isaiah 53:10, "Yet it pleased THE LORD TO BRUISE HIM; HE has put Him to grief ..." Profound!

coming of the promised Saviour. Their brightest hopes had rested upon
this event. For a thousand years, in song and prophecy, in temple rite
and household prayer, His name had been enshrined; and yet when He came,
they did not recognize Him as the Messiah for whom they had so long
waited.
"He came unto His own, and His own received Him not." John 1:11.
To their world-loving hearts the Beloved of heaven was "as a root out
of a dry ground." In their eyes He had "no form nor comeliness;" they
discerned in Him no beauty that they should desire Him. Isaiah 53:2.

This is a perfect example of the power of a "good relationship". Rabbi Meza and Dr. Brown have a well established friendly relationship. With all due respect, you both are mistaken in the point of "Who is speaking" in Isaiah 53:1-9. To understand Isaiah 53, one should start in Isaiah 52-13.
The subject speaking in the beginning of Isaiah 53 are the "kings of the nations" who will have their mouths opened of astonishment upon seeing Israel (the smallest amongst the powerful nations) raised and exalted.
The kings of nations that had Israel captive are saying among themselves : "because of the transgressions of my people he was afflicted".
The Midrash does not mention anything about the Messiah in Isaiah 53. This is wrong! What is said is that "My Servant" (EXPLICITLY DESCRIBED AS BEING ISRAEL SEVERAL TIMES BY ISAIAH) will be raised higher than Moses, higher than the angels, higher than the prophets of Israel.
Know that according to ANY RABBINICAL COMMENTARY the "MY SERVANT" TERM USED IN ISAIAH 41-53 IS ISRAEL, AS IT IS WRITTEN EXPLICITLY IN THE TEXT OF ISAIAH. The term "MY SERVANT" does not change from Isaiah 41 through Isaiah 53, it refers always to ISRAEL.
Rabbi Meza is right about the word "Messiah" does not appear NOT EVEN ONCE IN THE WHOLE TANAKH referring to the figure of the Messiah of the Jewish people. ALL the verses where the word "mashiach" appear in the Tanakh refer to a specific "anointed" person, not to the Messiah himself. NONE of the Messianic verses in the Tanakh mention the word "ha'mashiach" anywhere, but rather talks about how the world will be transformed.
Mr. Brown, the last Messianic chapters of the Prophet Ezekiel clearly tell us that the Messiah will have children himself, and also will bring sacrifice offers to the Temple (the third temple) for his own unintentional sins.
In Isaiah 53:11 the text says clearly that "My servant, the righteous one, by his KNOWLEDGE (NOT by his blood) SHALL CAUSE MANY TO BE JUST (many people of the nations will be just)".
Shouldn't Isaiah have written "by HIS BLOOD My servant, the righteous one, shall cause many to be just" ???
ISRAEL is mentioned in the Tanakh in different ways, as individual, as a "man" (by Isaiah), as a "child" (by Hosea), as a "G-d' first born son" (by Moshe Rabeinu, in Exodus), as a "son of G-d" (by Hosea), as a "nation of priests" (by Moshe, in Exodus), as the "worm of Jacob", etc. despite all these terms are the singular, they refer to the People Israel as a group.

"My servant" is a singular term, but it referes to "My WITNESSES" in the plural... so, if you still have any doubt about the singular "My servant" described explicitly by the prophet Isaiah actually refers to a plural "My WITNESSES" (the people Israel), then I don't know what world you live in, Mr. Brown.
Oh, wait, there's more if you are still in doubt about "My servant" referring to Israel.

Ezekiel 34:12 , it is very interesting the fact that you mixed truly Messianic verses (Ezekiel 34:23-24) with verses that report what will happen to Israel ("My servant") in the Messianic era (Isaiah 53:11-12).
Well, let's start with Ezekiel 34-23-24; these verses talk about "My servant David will be a shepherd over them", indicating that the Messiah will be a direct descendant from king David, and this fact is repeated over and over again by all the prophets of Israel. G-d promised King David that his throne will never lack a king, meaning that the one who will be king over the Jewish people and lead the Jews in the ways of G-D will descend from him (King David). The "shepherd" means simply "the leader", "the one who guides". In fact, the verse 34:24 mentions exactly the word "prince" (as we can read below). And this "shepherd" ("leader") will lead the Jewish people over the mountains of the Land Israel, where they will inhabit in COMPLETE PEACE (thing that hasn't happened). Indeed, after the first century C.E. (period of the Jesus) the Jewish people was expelled to the long exile in the four corners of the world, and have been suffering ALL KINDS OF ATROCITIES by the nations.
Theses verses of Ezekiel are truly talking about the Messiah, who has not yet arrived, as you and everybody else know that the Jewish people are still spread around the world and not ALL living peacefully in the mountains of Israel, as this chapter of Ezekiel mentions.

12 Therefore will I divide him a portion among the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the mighty; because he bared his soul unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
Isaiah is narrating the trajectory of Israel from chapter 41 through 53. Israel (the righteous ones) is defined explicitly several times as "My servant" from chapters 41 through 53, and talks prophetically about their exile in Babylon. The righteous "Jews" were exiled in Babylon together with the wicked "Jews" for over 70 years due to the transgressions of the wicked ones amongst them. And all that generation that went to Babylon died in Babylon, and never returned to Jerusalem. Even the righteous "Jews" were buried together with the transgressors in Babylon ("because he bared his soul unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors").
There was no punishment of the righteous with death whatsoever. This is an idea invented by ignorant Christianity of first centuries C.E. that has lasted until today. The righteous was carried away to Babylon together with the transgressors to instill the good ways of G-d among the people Israel. The righteous ones should bring back the ones astray. The purpose of G-d allowing the righteous ones ("My servant") to be sent to the exile was rather a support and example to the wicked ones. Only when they all together realized that ONLY ONE way of justice existed (the way of G-D of Israel), they were allowed to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple and the city destroyed by Nabuchadnaser. But the generation that returned was born in Babylon, it was not the same who went unto the exile. That generation who went unto the exile in Babylon (righteous ones and wicked ones) died and was buried in Babylon.
I hope you read the texts in context, for a text without context is just a pretext.

GM P , it is not worth it debating with people who REJECT explicit passages of the Tanakh. Mr. Brown knows the truth himself, but he convinces people otherwise because of his personal gain by doing so. He is not that stupid of a man to not see the truth. Even my 8 year-old niece reads the Bible and understands clearly that the term "My Servant" is used for Israel, because it is said explicitly by the Prophet Isaiah. This is about basic text reading skills, which the Christians seem to lack.

What I see in many is their hesitancy to honestly debate the possibility that Jesus could really be the Messiah/Chosen One because of fear of rejection by family, friends or community. But who we must fear more is the rejection of God.

The Suffering Servant in Isaiah ch. 42, 49, 50, 52, 53, is both the nation Israel, the Jews, and also the personified Israel in their King Jehoshua son of Joseph, the "one for the pasha" see Gen 30:22-24, and Gen ch 27:9 in Targum ben Uzziel.
The key to understand this, is in the Yom Kippur ceremony in Leviticus ch16.
Understanding the typology of the two kids of the goat, and the ram in Lev 16:5 is the key.
Typology of the two kids of the goat and the ram is derived from Gen ch 27, the story of the blessing of Jacob by Isaac.
In Gen 27, Esau is born hairy/saw-eer, and Jacob in order to get the blessing from Isaac must become become hairy/saw-eer and is told to depart to Laban, Jacob becomes saw-eer aza-zel, that is goat of departurue, or scapegoat.
Hebrew word saw-eer means hairy or goat and is used in Lev 16:5, the ram represents Isaac, as in Gen 22:13.
Hebrew word aza-zel also means "strong one agaist God", or "God fighter", and is simmilar to the meaning of the name "Israel" the name given to Jacob in Gen 32:28
In the Yom Kippur ceremony we have represented Esau/Christians, Jacob/Jews, and Isaac/Jehoshua son of Joseph.

In the Christian part of the Bible we have: "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." (Mat 11:28-30)

First promise is in Genesis 3:15, "the seed of the women", preparatory fulfillment of this promise was the birth of Isaac and his twin sons Esau and Jacob. Global Day of Atonement was on Golgotha, notice that on either side of the Messiah we have two sinners, it is a triune sacrifice for the sins of the world, the two sinners on either side of the Messiah represent, the Christian Church, and the Jewish nation.
Same as in the Day of Atonement in Lev 16:5 we have a triune sacrifice, so on Golgotha we have triune sacrifice for the sins of the world, all three represent the One Messiah.

The Rabbi's stand, where the suffering servant is an ambiguous plural group (of messengers & prophets, possibly including Jesus as well) feels like "spiritualizing" a topic. The whole context of that section of Isaiah clearly speaks to the singular one, who would be high and lifted up. It sounded like the Rabbi's rebuttal to this is that the rewards for the messengers and prophets (on the other side of death) would be reflective of this "high and lifted up" simply because we don't know what those rewards are explicitly.
I've had many conversations with people who read a verse and refuse to (or are blind to) see it for what it is saying, grammatically and contextually, so this doesn't surprise me. That being said, I'm curious if Rabbi Asher Meza were to "play it forward," on the opposing argument, whether seeing how precisely Jesus fulfills those verses exactly, and goes on to exactly fit so many others, if that the Rabbi might reconsider his view that Isaiah 53 is pluralistic & spiritualized?

Rabbi Meza has unfortunately allowed himself to be boxed in ny giving his own limited interpretation of the "servant" as prophets and martyrs. The servant is better defined as the RIGHTEOUS REMNANT of Israel or the righteous Jews who are prepared to suffer for God's purpose. This definition will include messiahs and prophets, but not be limited to them. When Isaiah says that the "servant" will be lifted up,. he is saying that the righteous remnant of Jews, who survive the Assyrian persecution (which is the theme of Isaiah), will be thrive and prosper, and be lifted up above the Gentile nations that persecute them. Meza is right (and Brown wrong) that the "servant" is not an individual man.

These people dedicated a *hewn* altar which is forbidden by Elohim. They bring their holocaust, inquisitions, etc. upon themselves. YHWH chastens his children with the rod of the pagan. Group or individual is an interpretation and THIS is where Christians LOVE to dwell. You give them a direct passage and they're hellbent to spin it. It's amazing and sad.

You have a distorted view on the intentions of anyone who believes in Yeshua. If you doubt the intentions, you won't trust anything they say.
However, believers in Yeshua gave their lives to confirm their testimony was genuine. This beats the point of being manipulative or lying.
Where is the gain of giving up your life for something you fabricated?
Belief in Yeshua is a genuine and honest Faith, unlike Islam, where Muhammad killed, sexually favored himself and all glory was to him, "say I'm a prophet or be killed!"

I see the 'rabbi' making some assumptions which are not in the text. For example, he talks about prophets in Isaiah 53 when the text doesn't say so. He says it doesn't refer to one person when the text says 'My servant' and NOT 'servants'. Again, the text does not say 'his seeds' but the rabbi keeps saying his seeds. He also mentions Jeremiah but Jeremiah didn't suffer for his people. He seems to be arguing like a muslim

Cory Abouaf He did not cancel the Sabbath, but he only gave the Sabbath to the Israelites, the Jews. Non-Jews are not allowed to keep the Sabbath, at least not strictly; but by making the first day of the week the Christian Sabbath, instead of the 7th day, that's allowed for non-Jews.
Qrayon, thx for your response. I used to think that way too but really found that that is not entirely correct. Some questions: Where in the scriptures did He cancel the sabbath for Gentiles? Where in the NT does it say that when one believes in Yeshua that He remains a Gentile? Isn't true circumcision a matter of the heart? Isn't a true Jew, one who has been circumcized by the Holy Spirit, permanently indwelling? Doesn't the word say that there is neither Jew nor Gentile but all are one? Are not Gentiles grafted into the vine and then part of Israel?
Cory Abouaf , It's not that He cancelled the sabbath for the Gentiles. He never gave the Sabbath to the Gentiles in the first place, only to the Jews. Bear in mind that He offered the Torah to all the nations, but only the Israelites (the Jews) accepted it. I don't know where or if the NT says who remains a Gentile and when, but that doesn't matter. What matters is what G-d says.
No, true circumcision is not a matter of the heart. A true Jew is either one who was born of a Jewish mother, or one who has gone thru a kosher conversion. In the case of a man, that conversion is not kosher if the man has not been circumcised with the physical removal of the foreskin. Does the word say there is neither Jew nor Gentile? No, I don't think so, at least not here on earth. What vine? Gentiles are not part of Israel unless they have gone through an orthodox conversion, and obey all the commandments.

Rabbi Meza's interpretation of Isaiah 53 is actually something I've been entertaining for some time lately. I would take it a few different ways, however. I wouldn't say it is just the prophets and martyrs of the Jews, but the prophets and martyrs of the world. I would include Martin Luther King Jr., Socrates, Gandhi, and others as well. Many of the Righteous Among the Nations would be on this list.
Whenever society becomes corrupted, God sends a messenger to warn them of their ways. But more often than not, the world hates those who call out their evil. But the evil needs to be called out because it leads the society to destruction if they do not repent. Perhaps the society will turn back after they are appalled by their evil, and how they treated the prophet who warned them (They will look on the one whom they have pierced). They will then turn from their sin in shame, thus their society will be saved (By his stripes we are healed). Other times they will not turn back and their society will be destroyed. Then the history books will recall the wisdom of the prophet and contrast it with the folly of the people (Therefore I will give him a portion among the great).
Even with this interpretation, it is far from getting Jesus off the hook of being the subject of Isaiah 53. Rabbi Meza confirmed this, that Jesus would count in his interpretation. Even Jewish literature talks about the evil of the generation of Jesus' time, so the people were ripe for a prophet, and the very messages Jesus taught are exactly the kind that addressed the people's evil, -the rich pharisees exploiting the poor and acting righteous on the outside.
But it cannot suffice to say that Jesus was only a prophet like Isaiah. He claimed to be God (or else his followers claimed him to be). If Jesus was not God, he is either a heretic, or his message got terribly corrupted. And since it seems his followers were genuinely convinced he did rise from the dead, then we must say his message was corrupted by God himself. So we cannot say Jesus was a mere prophet. Instead, I would take it a step further: not only is Jesus one among the many prophets Isaiah 53 is about, but he is the gold-standard. The archetype itself points to Jesus as the ultimate prophet.
No offense to Meza but he's unprepared for this. Brown is cherry picking the Isaiah 53 reference and shoe horning it to fit Christian doctrine - as all Christians do. The suffering servant is clear if you simply read the preceding chapters.

Whatever the case no one can sidestep the final nail in the coffin to all of Brown's arguments and any anti-Judaism argument and that is - Isaiah 43:11 I, yes I, am YHWH, and there is no Savior but Me. Case closed.

The Rabbi contradicted himself in different occasions and the only way out of his contradictions was by saying the verses are spoken in a parabolic way, even if this chapter of Isaiah 53 is as clear as pure waters. This won't change YESHUA IS the Jewish MESSIAH spoken in Daniel chapt 9 to be cut off before the destruction of the 2nd temple.

I’m greatly honoured Dr Browns cause to prove that 53rd chapter of Isiah is talking about the Messiah. But it is the blinding of the Jew, which is now blessing the Gentiles. Once the day & time of Gentiles is over, this spiritual vale will be removed by Joshua himself, when he comes to deliver his people the Jew and bring them into the Kingdom.
