Thanks for covering my run, really enjoyed the video! Also shoutout to the whole Celeste speedrun community, could not have done it without all the labbers, supporters and all the other incredible runners that pushed this game forward.
I’d like to see a video (or series) covering how to do various tricks and skips, I myself am a speedrunner, and learning how to get runs below 40 mins, and I’d definitely watch 6 hours of a deep tutorial on how to play through any% room by room
@@monkeyman55667 Look no further than AverageImposter's WR Pace series! He's already done detailed videos on sub 60 and sub 50 strats and posted videos that show the whole recommended route for each chapter. I'm sure he's working on follow-ups to those videos.
I think my favorite aspect of Celeste speedrunning is the beautiful relationship it has with the intended mechanics of the game; most of the speedrun tech was even programmed intentionally. Like, save for a few death skips, speedrunning Celeste is far less about exploiting errors and more about getting really, really good at the core play style of Celeste.
Agreed! Another amazing thing that Maddy and the team did is the introduction of wavedashing and wall bouncing during 7B, 8C, and Farewell. I’m replaying the game again, and now that I know these mechanics, I can never look at the rooms the same way ever again
9:05 He isn’t actually dodging the spikes hitboxes. He’s using a hard coded mechanic of the game where, if you going the same direction as a spike is facing, it won’t damage you. This allows for stuff like one way dream blocks, but can also be used like this where he just barely can wall jump off of the wall. This is usually why speedrunners have 2-3 jump keys binded.
16:20 it's so weird to say this is "developer error" - the team are so aware of speed running and have built so much around these techniques, I think they're very aware that good players will find ways to bypass and find new routes through screens
Fun fact: There is one skip they patched out. Initially you could "Skip cutscene" in the prologue in a way that would immediately end it when the bird tells you how to dash. However, this also skipped the screen saying "You can do this" and this message was so important to the devs that they patched the game. Now you can still skip the cutscene of the bird cawing at you, but the message always shows up. So yes, they absolutely pay attention to all the speedrun shenanigans, but usually they embrace it, e.g. by adding a crouch-dash macro as a new optional key.
The actual reason for that patch was that it was a frame perfect trick that saved several seconds, leading people to reset runs for it a lot, which wasn’t an enjoyable experience. The fact that they wanted the “you can do this” message to appear was involved as that was the original reason for the cutscene being “unskippable”, and they made it still appear post-patch, but they were more interested in making the start of runs less reset heavy
@@deuceditton2574 either way, you definitely add to the point that the devs are quite involved in the speedrunning community when making changes and walk the line between intent and helping them out rather than doing things like that carelessly or out of error
And even with some of the things that genuinely were oversights such as demodashes, Maddy embraced them and incorporated them into the Farewell DLC and made them easier to make keybinds for & perform. Celeste isn't the average game where most of the skips and speed tricks are dev oversight.
2:01 What you show is actually wave dashes, not hyper dashes. I know they accomplish pretty much the same thing in most cases, but they are slightly different.
In fact there are a few misconceptions in the video, such as saying there are hitboxes missing in corner kicks, where the spikes don’t actually harm you if you are travelling in the direction they are pointing

I remember when I tried speedrunning this game, 3 months of playtime and I was more than proud of getting under 1 hour. Little would I know that it would be piss poor lol. Crazy how talented these guys are, mad props.
I recently started running and i already got over 300 hours and I have been slowly getting close to a a sub 50 minute. Stay on the grind and anything is possible.
I personally think sub 1 hour was the perfect goal for someone who wants a challenge but has little to no experience with speedrunning in general. I personally did sub 1 hour and stopped as was happy to stop there. Took me a couple months and by the time I finally got the run it was becoming less of a challenge and more just frustrating. sorry but i think you got this one wrong at 9:05 . That jump isn't pixel perfect. As long as you move away from the spikes, you can jump through them. Wonderful video nonetheless, and I hope to see more videos!
Yeah, spike jumps aren’t actually as hard as some people make them out to be. Honestly any moderately experienced player can get it in a couple attempts with barely any setup.
While I'm still sure it's not pixel perfect, the fact that you are moving away from the wall does only give you a short window. If you're too late, you won't die sure, but you also won't jump.
@@alansmithee419 buffers exist though making the time window about 6 frames. That sounds tight but some intended inputs in the main game are 4 frames or even lower so its not that bad.

Appreciated the video. A lot of your explanations of what tech was used where and how were wrong but aside from that it explains really well. And I don’t expect a video like this to know all the tech and how it works and such. :)
@@smth35 hyperdashes are introduced in 8C (core C side) but if you only play vanilla and don't watch any speedrunning content, you won't know that if you delay the jump you can get your dash back. wow. this is my first real introduction to the celeste speedrunning community, and you explained it really well. i can't believe the practice that must be put in to play through the game this quickly. so different than my probably tens of hours to beat the main game.
you found at least 14 errors in the video, ranging from calling wave dashes hyper dashes several times, to at 8:42 you 1) called an extended super reversed for some reason and 2)called a wave dash a hyper to at bumper boosts being hard for some reason(edit: found another one, at 9:10 he does not avoid the spikes, spikes have no hitbox if you are moving away from them)(edit 2: still an amazing video but i am very annoyed)
I really love how this game teaches you a lot of its speed tech through b-sides, core, and farewell. Even playing through the a-sides again, just knowing how to do those things makes you want to go faster.
I just got this game like 3 days ago and boy is it fun. Watching these speedrun after beating the main story with such a struggle is amazing. It's insane how people speed throught this game
The editing and narration is great but if I'm being honest certain things bugged me in this video. The strats and mechanics making them possible weren't explained that well, even if the names of the tech were mentioned there wasn't much explanation behind them. A lot of the tech names were mixed up like calling a cornerkick a corner boost and a wavedash a hyperdash but that's not that important honestly. The cornerkick in the shrine section of ridge isn't pixel perfect, it works by moving in the same direction as the spikes are pointing (moving the same direction as spikes doesn't kill you because they wanted things like spiked jumpthrough and dreamblocks to be possible), Isaac wasn't ahead of his PB during reflection exit, his best exit was a sub 18. Not trying to hate, these are just some problems I had with the video
This was one of the best videos I've ever seen in my life, I'm brazilian and this video alone is worth learning english, unfortunately I can't subscribe to be a member so all I can do is thank you, the speedruner and the entire celeste community

I love these speedrunning videos, please make more! I would suggest maybe Terraria, it doesn't have as much of a community as celeste, but it quite interesting with the strategies and pure luck involved. But you do you, I need to see more of these speedrunning videos!
You deserve INFINITY more subscribers. Like how do you have so many videos that have become so popular and still not reached 100k. The algorithm will hopefully bless you one day
Perfect explanation of the speed run - in depth but not overly long, and the editing and the lil strawberries went a long way to demonstrate the different moves
I just started playing Celeste for the first time last week. Playing it super casual. This game is incredible and I understand why people speed run it. This is also the first game I have ever played and anytime I get stuck executing something I think "how would a speed runner do this" and I usually get the jumps down within a try or 2 once I try and "speed run" the section. Very strange but also really fun.
Only 5k subs ? Nah you deserve mine ! I know all these tricks by heart and you still got my attention for these 20 mins and i didnt get bored even a second. Really awesome video.
Imagine training your body for years so you can climb mountains in a few days, just to see a girl zoom past you and reach the mountain's top in less than half an hour even after falling down
Ok, fine, since you apparently need a more constructed comment instead of a compliment towards the video creator: Yes, I know they didn't get everything perfectly right, but instead they explained the mechanics well enough so that a non-experienced Celeste player could understand the run much better. To me, it's clear that this is exactly what this video is trying to accomplish. As an experienced Celeste player, nitpicking every detail of it is entirely pointless because you aren't the target audience. The video isn't perfect, but it is very good
You NEED to cover the 202 and/or 100% deathless Celeste runs. I've watched the entire 202 deathless run and it was a wild ride. Constantly on the edge of my seat with all the risky jumps and fast paced gameplay - while also trying not to die a single time!
10:14 Hang on, did Isaac actually figure this strategy out, or is this another case of mis-atrubuting discoveries to a runner doing them...? Because speedrunning a game is a MASSIVE collective effort, and I see way too many people forget this
As someone who really enjoys the Mirror Temple B-side, specifically Theo's part, I can't believe people wouldn't like it. EDIT: Same with the next level's B-side...even though I died at least 300 times on it, I enjoyed it a lot. Honestly this whole game is just so good. EDIT 2: I think I had around 3,000 deaths when I first hit that flag...and that was BEFORE I did any B-sides lolol
16:17 There was no developer error here, though, this game was _designed_ for speedrunning. The devs intended for tons of skips and other time saves to exist.
As someone who plays Celeste more than they probably should, id say it's kinda odd having a video explain dashing mechanics that I don't even think look possible to also explaining the game's sections at similar times.

yeah I thought that as well. like one of the aims for the game was literally to make it as speedrun friendly as possible.

@@Kamirasu lmao I wasn't trying to pretend it wasn't me XD
Just asked if they heard about it
The strange hitboxes aren't just unique to Celeste. These types of smaller hitboxes are used in several games to make it feel more lenient.
Your editing and scripting are really great. I hope you keep creating and that your projects get the attention they deserve!
It’s actually really cool how you not only covered a really advanced run, but you also explained every mechanic for your viewers to understand what’s happening
This game is quite complicated but your narration and the edit are crystal clear and help understand how tremendously talented speedrunners of this game are, big props on that !
This video was so incredibly well made! The script was solid, the infographics were on point, and of course the run was absolutely incredible :) Was really hoping someone would make this xD
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome video! I think your editing style is quite refined. It's clear you know what you are doing.
I'm working my way into Celeste speedruns (my PB is still 50min and I'm incapable of doing many of the skips, but I'm proud of it), and videos like these are what keeps my motivation. Great explanation!
I love the editing of this video! The narration and all of the little pop-up text box things are so smooth and nice!
how do you manage to mislabel almost every tech 😭
IKR HOW DID HE MISLABEL A CORNER KICK FOR A CORNER BOOST
@@spulp_lordI ain't complaining cus I do that sometimes
But renaming a wall BOUNCE to a wall JUMP is just unacceptable.
Yh I've never even run this game and I caught a load of his mistakes
he called wavedashes hyperdashes bro 😭😭
Appreciated the video. A lot of your explanations of what tech was used where and how were wrong but aside from that it explains really well. And I don’t expect a video like this to know all the tech and how it works and such. :)
Uhm, so somebody a month later managed to beat the record
Yeah, that happens. It’s called the Bannister Effect.
I’m a big fan of your spelunky 2 content but I really love Celeste and this video did an amazing job breaking down some of the speedrunning tech!
Really well done. The execution in terms of explanation and visualisation is wonderful. Keep up the good work.
"Sleepy_Dan_ Celestial bogosort, press random buttons until a fast run happens" I think that's called machine learning
The Hyperdash you showcased is actually the Wavedash.
Other than that, great editing and writing for the video!
Yeah a Hyperdash is just a Wavedash without the initial jump
@@astra3766 didn't know that was called a Hyperdash
@@smth35 hyperdashes are introduced in 8C (core C side) but if you only play vanilla and don't watch any speedrunning content, you won't know that if you delay the jump you can get your dash back. Also he mentioned superdashes, which do exist, but are horizontal wallbounces.you just wallbounce off the floor rather than the wall. I know my explanation might be confusing but it's the easiest way i see it.
I personally wish this game was more well known.
It's rather well known especially compared to other precision platformers
There are definitely a bunch of little mistakes in this video which is why you probably should have someone proofread your script/watch your vid before release.
But in general I like this video. Editing and narration is very entertaining
That was a amazing video and a truly amazing run! Literally the 3rd chapter took me 3 hours to finish causally so congratulations to Issac for this amazing run!!!
9 months ago I commented on this video that I got my time to 1h10min10s, and today I just got my first run accepted on the leaderboards for 51:51.204.. thank you again!
Love your videos pastryperson! Always good to see people still talking about Spelunky and Celeste
bro i blincked and missed an ENTIRE SECTION hes crazy good
bro finished the game faster than it took me for the second chapter on my first playthrough
wow. this is my first real introduction to the celeste speedrunning community, and you explained it really well. i can't believe the practice that must be put in to play through the game this quickly. so different than my probably tens of hours to beat the main game.
My belief is that the Mirror Temple B side theme is so good that speedrunners lose time just to listen to it lol
thank you for going so in depth on the intricacies involved in this speed run. Very well edited
you found at least 14 errors in the video, ranging from calling wave dashes hyper dashes several times, to at 8:42 you 1) called an extended super reversed for some reason and 2)called a wave dash a hyper to at bumper boosts being hard for some reason(edit: found another one, at 9:10 he does not avoid the spikes, spikes have no hitbox if you are moving away from them)(edit 2: still an amazing video but i am very annoyed)
i can’t thank you enough for the clarity you bring to your topics! ☀️
I really love how this game teaches you a lot of its speed tech through b-sides, core, and farewell. Even playing through the a-sides again, just knowing how to do those things makes you want to go faster.
the editing is absolutely juiced out
the right treatment for based god isaac
I just got this game like 3 days ago and boy is it fun. Watching these speedrun after beating the main story with such a struggle is amazing.
It's insane how people speed throught this game
Editing, pacing and quality is on point for this video. Good job my friend, keep it up👌
Celeste speedruns are some of the funnest speedruns to watch on youtube. They last around 30 or so minutes, but ao much is happening during that time.
I love how your not only posting spelunky content but other games too its very entertaining to watch!
This was one of the best videos I've ever seen in my life, I'm brazilian and this video alone is worth learning english, unfortunately I can't subscribe to be a member so all I can do is thank you, the speedruner and the entire celeste community
Totally insane watching this video after the absolute goat breaks the 25m barrier. People thought 24:xx was completely impossible when I first started watching bubs.
I love these speedrunning videos, please make more! I would suggest maybe Terraria, it doesn't have as much of a community as celeste, but it quite interesting with the strategies and pure luck involved. But you do you, I need to see more of these speedrunning videos!
The editing in this video is incredible
What a fantastic channel, thank you Pastryperson.
You deserve INFINITY more subscribers. Like how do you have so many videos that have become so popular and still not reached 100k. The algorithm will hopefully bless you one day
Incredible video, but you forgot to mention how door skip actually skims off 3975 years off of the run time
Perfect explanation of the speed run - in depth but not overly long, and the editing and the lil strawberries went a long way to demonstrate the different moves
Well put-together video! Great work on it and congrats to Isaac!
3:30 If you are calling her antagonist, you didn't get the main idea of the game
I remember the last minute barrier being broken, as I'd just finished beating the game for the first time
Wow things have come so far since then
IF MY GIRL AND ISAAC ARE DROWNING CATCH ME AT MY GIRLS FUNERAL CHANTING
TWENTY FIVE FIFTY NINE
Nice video and great visual effects
Keep going ❤
this is nothing compared to my revolutionary celeste speedruns that may or may not exist
this is really high quality! thanks for the video ^^ definitely subscribing
Great video, love the channel and keep up the great work. Super well edited.
Only 5k subs ? Nah you deserve mine !
I know all these tricks by heart and you still got my attention for these 20 mins and i didnt get bored even a second. Really awesome video.
this editing is top notch, well done
Celeste speedruns are an alternate universe where Madeline is a pro mountain climber
Imagine training your body for years so you can climb mountains in a few days, just to see a girl zoom past you and reach the mountain's top in less than half an hour even after falling down
16:28 That is just a normal cornerboost, not at superdash. If it was a superdash, there would be speed rings behind Madeline.
amazing video deserves sm more attention
Thank you!
As someone familiar with all of these mechanics, I am impressed by how simple yet correct you explained them. Very nice to watch!
actually he butchered alot of them
He butchered all of them. If you actually think he did any of these right, I don’t think you quite know what you’re talking about.
Ok, fine, since you apparently need a more constructed comment instead of a compliment towards the video creator:
Yes, I know they didn't get everything perfectly right, but instead they explained the mechanics well enough so that a non-experienced Celeste player could understand the run much better. To me, it's clear that this is exactly what this video is trying to accomplish. As an experienced Celeste player, nitpicking every detail of it is entirely pointless because you aren't the target audience. The video isn't perfect, but it is very good
@@timbakker371okay but i have never done a celeste speedrun or even attempted to, and i can see errors with this video
You NEED to cover the 202 and/or 100% deathless Celeste runs. I've watched the entire 202 deathless run and it was a wild ride. Constantly on the edge of my seat with all the risky jumps and fast paced gameplay - while also trying not to die a single time!
amazing speedrun! also top notch editing!
Making Celeste videos will attract about ten times as many viewers as Spelunky 2 videos do.
10:14 Hang on, did Isaac actually figure this strategy out, or is this another case of mis-atrubuting discoveries to a runner doing them...? Because speedrunning a game is a MASSIVE collective effort, and I see way too many people forget this
Celeste speed runners are not human. They are ascended
And i thought normal Celeste was hard
This is a speedrunning video on the history of speedrunning Celeste. Very well done.
don't think ive ever seen a youtuber remember the difference between a hyper, a wavedash, and a super
aint nobody calling the dust bunnies "sludge"
I just went off what the wiki said, i thought it was dust bunnies as well
As someone who really enjoys the Mirror Temple B-side, specifically Theo's part, I can't believe people wouldn't like it.
Let alone the execution, it’s mind boggling to me people can remember the exact layout of every level for 25+ minutes.
Me speedruning hrt
:3
You're a man. :)
19:27 "IF MY GIRL AND ISAAC ARE DROWNING CATCH ME AT MY GIRLS FUNERAL" 💀
16:17 There was no developer error here, though, this game was _designed_ for speedrunning. The devs intended for tons of skips and other time saves to exist.
That discord comment at 19:27 💀 “if my girl and Isaac drowning catch me at my girlfriends funeral chanting twenty five twenty five” lolll
I just started running Celeste and got my time down from 23h+ to 1h10min10s... Thanks for the explanation!
Fantastic video!
Thanks :)
This is unreal. I can't believe it's physically possible for humans to do this.
gosh, what an awesome run
This speed runner has plot armor lmao
The best part is that when you do a really hard strat, and you pull it off flawlessly
As someone who plays Celeste more than they probably should, id say it's kinda odd having a video explain dashing mechanics that I don't even think look possible to also explaining the game's sections at similar times.
