How to paint your faux leather, leather or vinyl furniture with Chalk based paint

- For this project, you can paint your faux leather, vinyl or leather furniture (not suede) easily with no sanding between coats, no fabric mediums added to your paint. I just applied the Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paints with a damp brush and sealed with the Easy Peasy Pray Wax. I have not tested this process with any other brand, so can not tell you how other brands would do with this project. I only used Dixie Belle on this because Dixie Belle is a flexible, user friendly paint.
All products used are available online at dixiebellepaint.com/?aff=71
Colors Used:
Chocolate
Pine Cone
Sand Bar
Muscadine Wine
Coffee Bean
SEALER:
Easy Peasy Spray Wax (a great water based wax in the spray form with quick dry and cure times).

Those look amazing!! Thanks so much for making this video. Currently revamping my room and you just inspired me to paint some of my leather instead of buying new furniture :)
I LOVE the colors you chose! I can't wait to try this!
Hi Amy,
Wow! So smooth even from the first coat. The stools turned out beautiful. Love the colors you choose for the leather and for the wood. So amazing! Lots of love. Happiness, Teresa.
Thank you Teresa
I was skeptical at first about all the colors to blend, but turned out amazing!!
I am so inspired! I've been wanting to refurbish my tufted headboard for the longest. I should not have bought white! It's still quite beautiful, so instead of sewing a cover for it, I'm going to try this technique in a darker shade. Thank you so much for sharing.
Wow. Really cool vid. Thanks Amy.
Thanks so much for this tutorial! I have a faux leather headboard that I've been looking to replace but on a whim looked to see if there was a way I could revamp it instead. I love my headboard but it's black and doesn't really go well with the flooring in our new house. I'm so glad I found this video!
How did it work out for you?
Loved it Amy thank you sooo very much. When I get chair finished I will send pictures. 🥰
Thank you from Cork, Ireland. This saves me the cost of a new sofa! Good Girl!
Great job! Thanks for the info. I'm going to try this on some old chairs.
Looks great love the colors
I am watching video again since Iv had covid I think I am now finally ready to paint that leather chair. Ooh finally. Been long road. Just love your tutorials. You are the best.
love the video. great upcycling idea.
Great video Amy, thank you so much. I’m off to paint my cushions now!!
So happy this was helpful
Fantastic work!
wow, thanks a million for posting that great video
Hi Amy, this was awesome!!!! I love how the colors blended. I so wish I could get my hands to blend like that!!!!
Thanks Julie
I’m wondering how these have held up?
Yep the actual important bit, provided there is no reply, not so well, those edges are in an extreme wear spot, if the upper layer flaked off, paint doesn't have a chance
@@sharifsircar Mere asumptions. Quality paint has evolved and it is now extremely durable.
looks awesome!
Excellent job on those stools! They looked great.
Thank you for that, I'm inspired ✨️
Amazing! Thx for nice quick ez video
Thanks so much for this video. I just bought a new dining chair which is faux leather tan and brown with black legs. I love the style of the chair as it’s really cumfy but I don’t want to have all tan chairs. I’m gonna try this method you did and have 2 tan chairs and 2 black. Looking forward to painting them. I just pray I can get the paint and wax here in Australia
Wow that was amazing..
And just to say I'm a loyal Dixie belle products antique and vintage furniture flipper....Love me some Dixie...Great job Amy!👍🤗🎨🖌️
Thank you Debra :) Yes, I love Dixie Belle products too
@@AjsVintageDesigns I know right? 🖌️🎨🤗❣️
Thank you so much for making this video. I just picked up a perfect faux leather chaise lounge,.
You're welcome ! You'll have fun doing this. Hope you have a fabulous weekend....HUGS
I do! I just bought one! I thought I would reupholster it! Now I don’t have to!, thank you!
Fantastic! Thank you!!!
Fantastic 👏👏👏
With the mousse I will use your trick and infuse gloss top coat when painting on nail head trim. I do know that part. lol after all Iv watched and learned you would think I would know such things. 🥰🤗 thank you my dear.
Beautiful
Love it 😊
wow ! thanks for the video
Hi AJ!
I have always loved your videos and the way you present them. Straight to the point! I always come back to your channel for inspiration 😊and you are a pleasure to watch! QUESTIONS:
I have a pleated leather chair with buttons and the arms are upholstered to fold over. It is a oyster color and I like your color scheme. Everyone loves sitting in this chair including my 4 dogs…wondering if the paint will hold up to that much use? It is old, however there are no scratches are any rips. It is good quality butter soft leather just not my favorite color.
Extremely helpful video, thanks for doing this! Going to purchase a faux leather ottoman now that I'm going to repaint :)
Thank you for this video. Now I won't have to buy another office chair for the craft room. Just subscribed. Take care
Wow 😲😳. Thank you!
Aj those turned out amazing! You are such a great teacher. Thank you so much for making this video.
Amazing result! I was wandering, can I follow this steps and use this very same paints to recolour a faux leather bag I have? It does not have a smooth texture, but it semms to be quite strong as a material...
Omg this is great ,and money saving
Love the gator hide by Dixie belle. Will be trying this on a couch next
I didn't seal the fabric with Gator Hide... I show in the video on fabric and leather I use their Easy Peasy Spray Wax. I love all of Dixie Belle's projects. Would love to see pictures of your couch when you do it :) Thanks for watching and I hope you have a fabulous day :) HUGS
@@AjsVintageDesigns o yes sorry i used the gator hide on tile. I will definitely do the couch with the wax spray like you did and post also
This is great! I wish I had seen it before I covered my barrel chair with kitchen and bathroom paint! It looks great and I love it but it is cracking. Do you know if I could paint OVER it with a ismilar colour of Dixie Belle Paint and that would keep it from cracking or am I done? Thanks!
Amazing! Did you use the Dixie Bell All in One Mineral Paint or the Chalk Mineral Paint? Is there a key difference?
Awesome blending technique! I have a sort of 'blotchy' faux leather couch that's sadly peeling. BTW ...there are products to put over the vinyl backing that's essentially like a vinyl ... you figured not to bother?
Will the paint come off / transfer if it gets wet?
Good job 👍
Excellent
I am inspired to change the color of our couch
I'm so happy you are going to give it a try .... Its so much fun !!
awesome. thank you.
Thank you so much. One question I have is. The piece I’d like to try and paint is, just how you peeled the pieces of vinyl along the edges, well my whole bed is peeling. Headboard, footboard and bench. Can I peel it all off and clean it and paint it?
Brilliant
You can use the same paint on the legs of the chair? I am looking to paint a headboard that is faux leather and wood
It was great information. I have plans but all of this to use in the near future. I have a question about purses. Have you ever done a purse with this paint? I have a Montana west purse that I paid a lot of money for hold it out of my closet and it was peeling. I peeled off all of what was peeling. Now I would like to know how to go about repairing the purse, I just love it and don’t want to give it up. I believe it is a bonded leather? If you could help me I’d really appreciate it. I love your videos. Keep up the good work!
thanks! question: I want to do a complete tufted vinyl living room set with goal making it dark brown. It is reddish brown "Chesterfield red" so I think I'll buy a gallon of Dixie's dark greenish brown "Collard Green" to cancel out the red. Expensive - $145 a gallon - and $20 each 8 0z spray that you recommend. Would you have any advice?.... I just figured (since I am an artist and work with colors daily) dobbing assorted colors over the red is still going to look reddish... right? So I'll cancel it out with dobbed greenish brown... it should end up brown... THEN if I then want to add textures, I can order and dob assorted colors? (as you did wonderfully)
Can i use another kind of wax? Like the one i use for my Wood fourniture? Will IT be flexible?
If I painted a faux leather jacket should I still use the water based wax spray?
I'm wondering if you used some mod podge or something similar on the fabric if it would seal it and it would paint more like the faux leather. What is your opinion on this?
Just a quick question, what king of paint do you use,..flat paint, velvet, semi gloss, need too know please...Thanks and you did a great job
Hi, can the Dixie best dang wax be used instead of the easy peasy spray wax for the finish?
Very nice 👍
Have some spots on my new RV theater seats that were caused by the topical flea drops on my dog and her sitting in the chairs. I wonder how hard this would be to redo them?
How have these held up after a couple of years?
Looks like she is not answering
@@KMF3 Yeah, it's unfortunate when content creators abandon their channels and comments section.
@@heidiw637 yes
If I already messed up and have streaks since I used acrylic can I go over it with the chalk paint?
Thank you
I have a sort of textured faux leather couch. will this technique still work?
Game changer. It was fun and easy so doing on my faux leather ottoman. Perfect.
Have tried the slick stick? It was recommended by Dixie Bell?
Do you think this type of paint and sealer would also work on faux leather shoes?
Wow!!!
I have expensive living room set made from leather and vinyl, I got them last year..
I was thinking to do the same.. but I don’t know if this will look like the Manufacture or it will show cracks or paint fade within a year or two since it’s soft seats …
are you using the silk dixie belle paint or another texture
Beautiful finish! I redid part of a faux leather love seat. I mixed colors to try to match the part that wasn't in need of refinishing. I used Slick Stick first, then painted. (Though after watching this, I realize I didn't need to.) But it worked fine. My question. Have you ever tried the butta on painted faux leather ? I would love to use the orange butta but not sure if I should.
Hi Lois, what is slick stick? Did you use it to cover peeling areas? My couch is peeling badly and I need something to use as a base and then paint. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
@@tazmaniandiva7762 Slick Stick is a paint product from Dixie Belle Paint which is designed to be used on laminate, glass or high gloss surfaces prior to painting with chalk/mineral paint. It seemed to work well but the faux leather continued to peel several weeks later. I would recommend carefully cutting away the feelings an looking for a fabric or leather marker that matches. Dixie Belle products work w e 'll on areas with no peeling. Hopefully, this helps a tiny bit.
@@loislavery2650 yes it does help. Thank you for responding.
Hey, cool project! I bet you could use a PVA glue like Elmer's for the edge areas with exposed fabric. It should adhere well, is very flexible and also paintable. It would do a good job of replicating the non-porous surface of your surrounding faux leather. I'd just put a little on my finger and smear it on the damaged areas. Keep crafting! :)
I knew I needed to read the comments. I've been looking for a way to fix my couch which is peeling very badly. I put a couch cover on because most of the vinyl (if it even is vinyl) has peeled away. Do you think the pva elmers glue would be a good candidate for the cushions of the couch? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
@@tazmaniandiva7762 The PVA glue may be worth a shot, but you'd need to rub off all of the loose stuff you can before trying to repair it. For repair ideas, I would search for "repairing bonded leather" here on UA-cam. Hope that helps, and best of luck! :)
I want to do this on a foot stool that will be on my porch in Texas. Worried about wax and our heat. Is there a sealer you recommend for outside use?
What colors would you use for a deep rich dark brown?
How does this not just flake off with time? I want to buy a brand new rolling office chair and they don't make it in white. I want to paint it but I'm very skeptical of this because it is a brand new chair, not just and old one. Will this eventually flake off?
I’m wondering if you can paint on purses with this technique?
We have a chair that is peeling heavily. Is it possible to knock off all the peeling stuff. it's not just peeling around the edges the whole thing is peeling and paint the entire thing?
Amy I have to ask question?????? Did you seal the collard greens in easy peasy spray wax as well. This chair I’m finally getting to after being plagued by covid has leather back and seat. Then wood trim all the way around. Kind of ornate with dif wood carvings. I did not know if I should seal leather in easy peasy spray wax and wood with something else?????? Like clear wax or satin top coat. Also has mail head trim that intend on using mousse on.
Amber…you could seal the whole thing with wax. Easy Peasy or Best dang wax by DB
…if your still looking for an answer.
How has this lasted? Did it end up peeling? Could you do an update video?
How is it holding up after six months?
Can you please give me the name of the colour and where can I buy ?
How do you add a transfer on the vinyl?
Question, all - I have a recliner that has that faux leather that is peeling away. I like the recliner because its comfy, and don't want to throw it away. Is this chalk paint above a viable option? Will it hold up to normal use?
9 months later…Dave Johnson;
It won’t work on furniture that is peeling away…AJ’s piece was only peeling on the cording that goes around her chair.
If you paint your piece it will change the color but show every flaw …
! Is there another type of wax that you can use? The spray on easy peasy wax is CRAP but the paint worked very well!
Any furniture wax would work
WOW
Why chalkbased paint? What did you use to seal it?
That was awesome! Is there a limit to how many layers of paint.should be put on the pieces?
I personally wouldn't do more than 3 coats, even though Dixie Belle is a flexible paint you don't want to put too many layers on it which could cause it to be a little less flexible with the layers. Thank you for watching and I hope you had a beautiful day. You can find the links to the products I used for this project in the description box below the video :)
Did you use Dixie belle chalk paint
i'm applying the process that i have learned here to paint my synthetic leather shoes
Same! Painted my pleather skates worked great!
How has this held up a year later? ☺️
Bout to dye my furniture pink
Heyy thank you. What type of paint is that?
any chalk mineral paint will work?
Can you use it for car seats?
How long will it stay on after sitting on them
I need help in working out how to paint a vinyl recliner. I've done vinyl painting successfully in the past, but not something that is soft and 'squishy'. I'm using Fusion Mineral Paint and I'm concerned about the bits that are touching: the sides that touch on to the seat, the head rest, etc. Any ideas? Thx loads for your great tutes.
Use paddle pop sticks to separate the leather.
What type of paint is this?
Where do you purchase the supplies
Will this paint work on a couch where the vinyl/faux leather has started cracking and flaking in small areas? Would it help fill in the cracks and repair the damage?
I would get angelus leather paint first.
reminded me of Bob Ross!
Would using acrylic paint crack??
