- How to paint leather with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint….
In the tutorial I will take you step-by-step through the process that I use when painting leather upholstery.
When it comes to painting leather with @AnnieSloanHome Chalk Paint, the results can be staggering whether you go for a look of tradition like me, or you find a contemporary twist on the process the results can be tremendous. All you will need is your choice of Chalk Paint colour and plenty of clear wax, if you are painting upholstery I would most definitely say that the durability is awesome as long as the substrate that you’re working on is good quality a firm upholstery is always the best, you can also paint fabric upholstery To get the leather look it’s a slightly different process to this tutorial, I have a full step by step on that process to just click on the link below.
I do hope you enjoy the tutorial if you have any questions don’t hesitate to hit me in the comment section I’ll always do my best to answer as soon as possible.

Wouldn't have believed it possible - painting leather! What fabulous transformation. Thanks for sharing Jonathan.
Gorgeous job. That leather looks like it has been that same color for fifty years. I thought it looked beautiful after the first coat of clear wax too and never would have followed up with the dark- but wow! Your end result looks amazing. You've definitely inspired me. I'm redoing all my leather chairs including the one I'm sitting in right now starting as soon as my wife decides on colors. Happy spouse=happy house!
So wonderful to know that this is inspired you once you give it a go be sure to send me a picture I’d love to see 😊😊

I needed this video !!! Thank you. Now to do 2 club chairs from brown to gray!!!
The depth in this piece is amazing, thank you once again for this wonderful tutorial...❤️
Thank you 🙏
Great job. You sure brought that old chair back to life with that sharp looking tan colour.
I am so glad you did this leather! I would imagine you might use a bit different method on a softer leather? At any rate, I see so many leathers just thrown to the ditch and now have an alternative to dyes and chemicals.
So beautiful! Can't get enough of your videos so I'll keep watching 🥰
Hey thank you very much as long as you guys keep on enjoying them I will keep on going ❤️❤️❤️😄🙏
You are so amazing with color!
Thank you so much I just love using colour in different ways to others 😊🙏❤️
You make look so easy Jonathan, it looks beautiful.
Hey thank you very much I suppose it’s one of those things our mind gets the better of us even I struggle just before I start painting and then once I get stuck in everything seems to pull together 😊❤️🙏
I will start with my sofa, identically color and style, immediately. Thank you, Jonathon. Every episode of your work is priceless 👌.
Absolutely hi Claker thank you for watching 😊❤️
This is unbelievably beautiful. You are truly an artist. Gorgeous!
Hey thank you so much really appreciate your lovely comment😊❤️🙏
It looks amazing…out comes the pumpkin leather chair I asked you about previously🤣❤️
Wow! I very much enjoyed this video.
Hi lovely thank you very much xx
Love how your chair looks finished 💗
Me too it looks great in the living room I’ve got another one to do but it’s just finding the time 😊❤️🙏
Knocked it out of the park! Well done and thanks for sharing all your knowledge with us. Stay safe my British friend! Ken. 🕊
Thank you very much Ken 😊
Amazing finish…absolutely the best painted upholstery video I’ve seen!!!!!!!!
Oh wonderful I’ll take that 😊😊🙏
Love it! I love how you still think of the highlights and shadows that would naturally be there. I have an upholstered chair in my art room and a purple chalk paint I'm going to paint it with. Just waiting for the right temperature so I can do outside. I'm going to paint the black base/wheels antique gold. Trying to go for a regal throne look. You know since it's my Art Throne! Just trying to figure out how I can add those nail heads or something else...stencil, gold leaf, etc.
Thank you jonathan, there is hope for my chair yet. I'll get right on it😅
I'm a new subscriber and I'm really enjoying your channel especially decoupage, your tutorials are easy to understand so thank you!
Beautiful! Thanks for another wonderful tutorial. ☺️ And love those tortoise shell glasses!
Thank you so much and I’m so pleased you noticed the glasses they wear my like mums spectacles like to keep her close in everything that I do xx
@@JonathonMarcMendesPaintedLove Was sorry to hear you lost your mom. Glad she was close at the end. Losing a mom is so inexplicable awful. Glad you keep her close in these ways. 💜
Oh Jonathon I Just ❤️❤️ It .
It Looks GORGEOUS 👍 Just ❤️The Colour 👍I’ve got some leather kitchen chairs I’m Definitely going to paint them NOW ! Have an Awesome day 😊
Thank you very much and you have a lovely day 😊❤️😄
Love this, thanks for sharing. Now I'm off to find a leather chair to paint.
Thank you ever so much 😊❤️🙏
Now I need to find leather furniture and have a blast painting. Maybe I will have an adventure and go torquoise!!!
Wow I did have doubts, but boy I was so wrong, it looks wonderful Jonathan , thanks for sharing. Best wishes from Australia
Thank you ever so much 😊❤️❤️
I was a little unhappy that you painted that beautiful chair, but you did a great job the chair is gorgeous. I love it!
Beautiful color. You made it look doable and I am going to be doing a sofa and loveseat. A little worried about waiting time before I can use it.
Wow what a beautiful and tasteful job Jonathon Marc! I actually much prefer this colour to the burgundy shade..... and it fits in perfectly with your decor in your home.! 🌝🌞🌟Thanks again for sharing your creative knowledge and great video! . Love and light from Australia. xx
Thank you very much I’m really pleased with its new colour I know it’s not for everybody but it works really well in our home and it save me a lot of cost and hassle in finding something right 😊❤️🙏
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😍
💖💖💖
Wow. Wow! WOW! What a great tutorial! I feel encouraged to tackle my sofa one seat at a time. Now, what's the best way to clean the brushes?!
Hi mr Mendez, another great job, only thing I’ve never painted is leather so I’m going to find a chair at some stage and have a go , thanks for the vid
Thank you so much and I hope you find a chair pretty soon and give it a go 😊😊
Hello Jonathon from Greece 🇬🇷
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Love it! Does it wear well with regular use though?
This is really wonderful. Do you offer links to the materials used? I cannot tell if you use a solid wax or a liquid wax.
Stunning transformation! I know you said the wax will soften the leather, so then can the chair be used in a functional manner or just decorative?
Your tutorials are so calming and satisfying as well as informative.....could watch them all day 👍
Yes it’s a good question and the chair will be functional I would give it 20 to 30 days curing time just to make sure but the chair is instantly flexible again once waxed in the past I have had some small cracks appear and it’s been an easy fix clear and it works again just add to the look 😊❤️🙏
That looks amazing and thanks for sharing. Can I ask how much paint you need for a project like this please. I have something in mind but don't want to over order on the paint.
Excellent job binging
Agreed, red and pink just don't work when primary decor is green. Not ready for Christmas decor ever, let alone year round!
Hi Jonathon this looks absolutely amazing. I've just bought what I thought was a leather chair but think now its probably pleather and my husband has made a bit of a hash cleaning it thinking it was leather. Do you think this would work on pleather? I'm loath to do anything else in case it just makes it worse. Many thanks would love your advice, cheers Carol
Your transformations always amaze me! Beautiful!
Thank you ❤️❤️❤️
Oh dear! Oh dear, I thought! What is J doing?? I think the colour on my iPad doesn’t do the colour justice because it looked like what comes out of a baby!!! But then the last shots really show the gorgeous colour! Amazing result!
Looks great. The painted studs gives it away though.
Wow, that looks wonderful. What a great job you did. I love it!!! I noticed you didn't sand in between coats, do you not do that with leather??
That’s a great question when I paint fabric upholstery I always sand in between coats to get a smooth finish but with ladder it’s a little different has a smooth finish to begin with I suppose it depends on how well that you like your paint down the last text year and brushstrokes the better if you do happen to get one or two brushstrokes than sand and repaint 😊
That looks amazing! So no sanding at all ??? Looks beautifully aged
Does it wear well ?
Amazing 😍👍. I wonder, how long time the paint is ok before you need to redo the paint? Your work is so great. Thank you for shearing.
In the past when I’ve done this it has been pretty durable the paint doesn’t seem to come off maybe just a few cracks will appear in the tight folds places like the arms but all I’ve ever done is replied clear and it works it just adds to the look of age the wax fits into the cracks and just appears to be just like aged leather it’s pretty good but 👍
Hello Jonathon, lovely piece! Could you please tell me if there are any alternatives to the Annie Sloan wax? Unfortunately, it's not available where I live, is beeswax okay for painted leather? Seems my choices are quite slim - what ingredients should I be looking for in a wax?
I've painted mine a light grey do I still need the dark wax plz
Hi , can I paint my chocolate brown leather lounge a tan colour?
Would that cover the chocolate well enough?
took awhile to understand his pronunciation of patina (pa-teena) but I have now.
🥴😵💫😄😄🙏
Would this work for a faux leather couch?
I really enjoyed this video, but is there any way to position the camera so your head isn’t in the way so much? Thank you for the video!
Yes of course my mistake once I was filming I didn’t realise and of course it’s difficult to go backwards once a mistake has been made with filming it was a little bit disappointing not just for the camera angle but I could see how many grey hairs that I had in the back of my head 😂🥴
I'm considering 2 MCM dining chairs with mismatched (but in good shape) leather seats and padded backs. I want them MCM color, like a teal. No tufts, buttons or folds. Sounds like a good choice for painting? What is the "life expectancy" of paint over leather?
Your channel is by far the most educational / inspirational out there, Jonathon. I’m curious about something and would love to hear your opinion. I’ve never seen any UA-cam refinishers use or even talk about the use of an airbrush in their workflow and I’m kinda shocked by this. The level of finesse that can be achieved with an airbrush when creating layered patinas, fades, visual effects and weathering is completely on par with a lot of the techniques and styles you apply to your pieces. I’m not suggesting it as a replacement to any of your techniques, but as a complimentary tool that can do things in new and different ways. Hell, I’ve even sprayed thinned chalk paint through my airbrush! What do you think about this idea? Have you ever tried it? Considered it? Would love to hear your thoughts!
Hi there and thank you very much for the lovely compliment and reaching out I have never used paint through a spray compressor but I know that other people have done it but it hasn’t seem to catch on in our world I’m not sure why🤔 i’m 100% sure that there is some amazing finishes that you could create especially blended pieces of furniture 😊😊😊
@@JonathonMarcMendesPaintedLove Well…. I think you should be the pioneer then! You can pick up a nice Iwaata airbrush and a small compressor for very cheap. And I’ll give you your first assignment >>> spray a coat of Tamiya paint in a nice rust color >>>> let it slightly dry >>> then spray isopropyl alcohol directly over the rust paint and be amazed at the organic patina that develops 😉
@@bricebeasley1516 that sounds absolutely amazing 🤩
@@JonathonMarcMendesPaintedLove it’s right up your alley….no question about it!
Did you add water to it?
I have a chair like that as well but it doesn't have the "dimpling". The previous owner had a cat and it has minor scratches on it. Have you ever fixed any scratches on leather and then "painted" it again? I am going with the same color, or close to it because I have a couch as well. Thank you very much. I too painted a leather couch and turned out great!
Mine too had minor cat scratches but I just painted over them and you can barely see where they were I think there is repair kits for leather online maybe do a Google search I suppose it depends how deep they are 🤔😊😊😊
Never thought we can paint lether ! I’m will not crack after?
Hi would this work on faux leather
