  • Skunk essence can be used in many baits and lures that work great for trapping fox, coyote, fisher, and more (see links for making homemade baits below). It can also be sold to lure makers for a decent amount of cash. This video explains how to acquire a skunk without it spraying, how to extract the essence from the skunk, and how to store the essence to either use or sell later.

Hey, never heard of burying it! Great tip! Great to see someone else who gets excited over a skunk.

It’s around 90 degrees here every day during the summer months. Is there a time where the essence is no longer viable?

I'm not exactly sure. It kind of depends what you are asking. As far as harvesting it, that all depends on how long the skunk has been dead. The quicker you get to it obviously the better. As far as storage, lots of lure makers keep their lures and ingredients in fridges to keep them fresh. They definitely do degrade over time and I believe temperatures expedites that process. I don't have a fridge that is dedicated to trapping supplies, so I do my best by keeping them in the basement or burying them to keep the temperatures down during storage.

Hello and thank you for your awesome videos! I have only skinned a snake before and now have a skunk in my freezer. Is there a reason you don't extract the essence before skinning?

I just think it's easier to see where to poke and how much essence is left if it's skinned.

Hey I collected from my first 3 skunks today. And the brand new syringe didn't push and pull easy. Plus I bent and broke one on the second skunk. What can I do to make the plunger slide easy. I had a hell of a time and a hard first time and day doing it. And I had a hard time finding the sacks. Help please get back to me.

It sounds like maybe you are using too small of a syringe. I get mine from the vet and they are used for injecting cows with antibiotics or other medications. They have to be tough enough to go through a cow hide so they are pretty thick which means the actual hole in the needle is larger also. That would likely help with both breaking the syringes and how hard it is to push and pull the plunger. As far as finding the sacs, they are just on either side of the vent. I usually feel for them first. You should be able to feel them if they are full. If they aren't full, I normally don't bother collecting the essence because it's not worth the trouble for how much you get. Other than that, all I can say is with practice you should be able to find them quicker and quicker. Hope that helps.
