I reckon that you could make a lure out of a pencil, a crow's feather, and a mixture of copper and lead wire and still catch Smallies and large mouth bass.
Agreed. Lol. My buddy once caught bass on a defunct calculator watch with a treble hook tied to it. To be fair, it probably just looked like a giant leech to the bass, but he did catch a few. Lol

@@markstott6689 pretty much 🤣. One of the lakes I fish has at least one tournament a week from February-November and many are 60-150 boats. It’s a big lake but with that and your everyday fisherman it gets pressured.

If there's one thing I've learned watching your videos it's that you can catch fish on pretty much anything.
In those loaded waters, yeah, just about anything is going to work, right?
Watching this channel made me really want a kayak. And so I started shopping for kayaks. Im entry level so naturally for me I wanted the best budget kayak... This led me to lifetime, pelican, walmart, tractor supply. I had a really fun time shopping for the kayak. In the end, I went with a pelican rally 100xp from Walmart. Not the best choice, but a cheap entry level boat that is capable of holding 300 pounds was the best I could do. Nevermind the fact that I am actually 312 pounds, but let's solve one problem at a time. Ok, now I needed to figure out how I was going to transport this kayak using my ford ecosport, I actually thought the pre installed rails would save me time and effort in the end. They did not, instead I am now finding it near impossible to get a roof rack. I first tried amazon, undeliverable. Tried tractor supply, walmart, harbor freight, they all have universal racks meant for round rails lifted up from the roof of the vehicle. My vehicle had them molded in. I will not be deterred. I will one day be getting my roof racks, I don't care if I have to whittle them out of wood and bolt them in. Im gonna get it done. Then I will get to look for kayaks, by that time it will probably be mid winter and i can score a pretty good deal on a sit on top fishing kayak, maybe even get a hobbie on the cheap. Then.... I can finally fish. After I learn how to kayak.
that thing looks like it would take a couple AAA batteries and putt around in a swimming pool! lol
You can catch fish with anything. Literally. It's all about the action(how it moves) and sometimes the color(depends on time of the year). Another banger video, as usual!
Or the fact it's literally loaded water! Tons of smallmouth.

Back in 1992 when the cicadas were in western Pa and eastern Ohio, I used live cicadas at ponds and the river to catch big largemouth and smallmouth bass. I also caught numerous bluegills with them.
The best thing about you and your channel, Matt, are the comments on your videos. Almost everyone wants to know where to get the lures you throw, where you’re fishing, what your reel/line/knot is.
What you prove every time is you know how to read the water and you understand bass behavior. Everyone wants the result, but most don’t know the details and won’t put in the work.
There’s lots of time spent on the water that doesn’t end up on video. Paddling a mile or two to the spot, trying to figure out the fish, and hitting new spots that aren’t always productive. It can be a lot of work but it’s all worth it when you have an awesome day of fishing or find a new lake with some big ones!
Ya never cease to amaze. When I see similar lures at the tackle shop I always get a chuckle, thinking. "who would waste cash on those ugly lures?" Like I said, you never cease to amaze.
Lures are made to catch fishermen 😊
Those Bass definitely hang out near the edge where the odds of getting lunch are greater. Bit like ocean fish where 90% are within 40 miles of the coast... but on a smaller scale.
Matt, I really enjoy your videos. I think some of my favorite parts are when you miss one with a topwater and come back and pick it up on a jig. It's a joy watching you cast and work your lures.

I totally agree with your two treble hook lures, often removing the belly hook and frankly don't know if it makes much difference in hook-ups but it surely helps reduce hook to line entanglements.

In honor of NDYakAngler, I started off my morning on the yak today with "Howdy Largemouth Bass" They weren't too nice today, BUT did catch a BIG striper today on the Bass Pro Shop Swerve glidebait....this bait's action is quite amazing for the price...I highly recommend these glidebaits....I'll be buying more.....20 lb. Bass Pro Excel mono is very underrated line, I might add..I'm ready for fall & had enough of this heat
We love your channel. My husband and I watch religiously. Love every minute. We are kayak fishers from far NE Minnesoata; where the bass bite is far and few between. Some people are jealous of our trout fishing....but we spend each week drooling over your top water bites!!!! Thanks for sharing your trips and skills
Just bought myself a foldable kayak from tucktec and I can not wait to get out on the water for the first time in yeeeaarrss. A lot of people are doubting my origami kayak but I have good faith in it, wish me luck!

Definitely a quirky lure and glad you saved the rest of us from wasting money on it. You toughed out the headaches and made a day of it. I'll stick to the plastic lip cicadas and custom painted cicada blanks I can finish myself. I only like the double hook as a trailer on the 1/4 ounce old Hula Popper lure. Blessings Matt
Hey Matt, I’ve been a viewer of your channel for a while and would love to see a full compilation of all of the best NDyakangler topwater strikes and blowups. Or you could count down your favorites in a ranking.
On the drag and pause, it sounds (to me lol) similar to a Heddon "Dying Flutter". Same tangling issue with casting those too, but the bass sure love em.
for lures that can get wrapped in the braid easily i usually just use a fluoro leader, even for topwater
That would have probably helped but those double hooks getting caught on the wings was what seemed to happen the most.

Hi @NDYak, I'd suggest trying to the other Cicada lure by Megabass. It's more a walking bait, and I've had much better success on it. Awesome video as always.
I fished a similar Savage Gear one earlier this year I just haven’t posted the video.
I would put some smaller trebles on that thing.

Fish generally won’t try to swallow hard plastic lures. I’ve had a wacky worm swallowed a couple times. I’ve never caught anything too crazy but a friend snagged a small suitcase full of adult toys once lol.

Just got kayaks with my buddy because of your videos. So far, we’ve only been shore fishing and there’s not a lot of access around us. We’re hoping the kayaks will give us a better chance at some good fish. Something tells me it’s not as effortless as you make it look to navigate a kayak and catch fish at the same time lol but I’m excited to learn

It’s mostly to keep the mosquitos, ticks, and chiggers off my legs when I’m on dry land. A lot of the spots I launch at involve walking through some tall grass.

A most entertaining video with those marvelous bites and fights. A clean and beautiful river which is pure bliss to the eyes. Remarkable the bite when you shifted to the crawdad lure (13:45). A shame that last fish that take off the double hook.
When fishing stained water I think the action of the lure becomes more important than the color. I used to have a lure that was a Joe Camel promotional giveaway for the cigarette. It was literally a lure shaped like a camel's head and and just dull brown with white eyes. But something about the way it moves the bass just love.

I hear them in MN where I was filming this, and in Fargo ND where I live. They don’t come out here until later in the year though usually August is when I hear them.

I painted a few of those a year ago and they did well on a straight retrieve for running water
I have a 7 day camping trip starting here in a few days and I have so many new lures to throw off my yak!! This just gets me so much more pumped!! SD here!!
I’d definitely change out those hooks if you keep using it. Way too big for how small the lure is IMO.
Great vid! I spent my summer in NE Iowa and with all the rain things were flooded or high water levels. I still managed to make some videos, but I had to adapt to water levels. Have a great rest of the summer!

I fished a Savage Gear Cicada earlier this year, similar lure I think. I haven’t uploaded the video yet but I liked that little lure and caught a few nice smallies with it.

You have to be hitting every estate sale, going out of business sale, and garage sale in a 2,000-mile radius. To find those lures, some of them I owned in my youth.
Somebody sent me this one and a few others but I’ll do a lot of searching on EBay over the winter months.

Iv been watching you for a while now and I can remember if you ever thrown a buzzbait. If not give it a try. Would love to see it on that magical lake with the Lilly pads
man those fish are playing left field on those. soon as it hits the water BAM! gotta ask as well how come you tie the knot you do? (definitely not a criticism) it clearly works well for you, you are efficient at it and it can hold big toothy critters. I tie a palomar knot myself with similar success i feel just seems easier to me. but ive never tied your knot so i was curious if there was an advantage im missing out on
I used a palomar knot for quite a while myself. Have used "Matt's" knot on and off for many years as well. Still do again now. For me, the palomar knot leaves the tag end pointing at you, which i thought caused it to catch more gunk on the retreive. The one Matt uses(and myself), has the tag end pointing away from you. Catches less gunk, easier to tie, and wastes less line as you've seen here. Just my observations. Might work for you as well??
I’ve tied the Trilene knot since I was a kid so I can do it without even looking. I also lose less line to the tag end with a Trilene compared to a Palomar, especially with bigger lures I have to make a bigger loop to go around.
