My favorite thing about shotguns is that literally anything that will slide through the tube can be used, batteries, dimes, bearings, marbles, peppercorns, whole nutmeg, rock salt, granulated bleach, gum, putty, sand, pulverized metal, chunks of wood, and just about anything works. In a human body, that black stuff would be exceedingly damaging and virtually impossible to clean out. Long term pain would likely last until it was all out of the body, not to mention the schrapnel damage in many different directions. The shock of the pressure wave would be devastating as well. That battery would be among some of the worst nightmares you have shown to date along with the likes of Dragon's Breath and some others. Just makes me shudder, which as a deactivated Marine, doesn't happen very often !

@@izzyplusplusplus1004 its more for the camera work that he probably doesnt do it, but a encloser can be made for less than 100 bucks, out of clear materials and still allow an open window for the high speed shot.
100-150 bucks now, would go a long way in the future. We generally understand the energy transfer with the gummy bear where as the ballistic block for high speed is better suited for showing penetration and after 2 shots in the current let it fly everywhere setup, you really cant show it that well. a clear enclosure will provide that and make the gel last more than a handful of shots and in the long run cost less money.

My first thought as well. Lithium is toxic in much smaller doses, causes acute and then complete kidney failure, GI tract malfunction (both ends + stoppage, but irrelevant here since it wasn't taken orally), heavy muscle spasms, central nervous system failure (it crosses blood-brain barrier), severe hyperthermia, coma and death, and most importantly, there is no "antidote" - it cannot be neutralized, bound and flushed, and if quick hemodialysis doesn't help, it's code: ART.
So not only recipient would die, but it will hurt whole time its dying. From all the things I wouldn't want to be shot with that's firmly near the top.

@@vladpintilei6204 Typically, rechargeables come in more common varieties such as AA and AAA. Any rechargeable 123s would be extremely valuable and wouldn't be used for ammo, since tougher flashlights commonly use them. Regular 123s would be good for powering tech, but then once spent would make terrifically effective anti-personell slugs, requiring even a poorly placed shot to the victim's foot to require amputation or risk death. Battery chemicals don't typically behave nicely in the bloodstream, so they'd almost be better and cheaper to use than reloading ammunition regularly.

I was impressed how thoroughly these batteries came apart regardless of what they were shot into.
These are regular disposable photo-type lithium batteries, right? If new and fully charged ... well let's do some math. If your 11 gram CR2 impacts its target at 400 m/s, that gives us 880 J if the energy transfer is complete (no external shrapnel or pass-through). The velocity could be considerably higher but you didn't chrono ...
Now, something interesting: A fully charged 800 mAH 3V battery contains 8640 J of stored energy -- almost 10 times what you get in a target by shooting it from a shotgun. Or perhaps 5 times if it's actually traveling at 600 m/s. TNT is ~ 4000 J/g for reference, so these things contain around 20% of the energy of TNT by weight, including the inactive bits like the case and terminals.
This shouldn't be too surprising, as, how much powder did you use to get the battery to its target? 5-15 grains? Smokeless powder has ballpark 75% the energy content of TNT, one gram is ~15 grains, while the battery itself is 11 grams total of relatively energetic material (equal to 3-4 grams = 45-60 grains SP), so it shouldn't be surprising that the battery actually contains more power than the shell propelling it.
That will definitely account for a little extra excitement at the terminal end, which you can see in the burst of flame where the lithium is melted/vaporized.
With discharged batteries this will be less of a thing, as the metallic lithium has been mostly reacted and there's not a lot of remaining chemical energy.
As far as the effects of being shot with one of these things: Wow. The chemicals involved are relatively nontoxic and could probably be tolerated by the body after some chemical burns, but the fragmentation is horrible. Basically like being hit with a frangible projectile. Infection? Depends; the inside of the battery is certainly sterile, but if tiny shrapnel enters externally you have tattoing and danger of infection in the dermis etc., which can be extremely dangerous.

I would like to see you try this: 12 gauge slug, drill a hole in the front end of the slug, fill cavity/hole with mercury, wax seal the front. Fire that into various thickness steel plate. In theory should get some good armor piercing. It is very difficult to overcompress a liquid (the mercury). This is very similar to many anti-tank weapons, though they use molten metal as their “liquid” of choice.

    • @robbiejames1540

i think what you're intending to refer to are HEAT rounds, which use a stream of metal behaving as a liquid (molten or not) to punch through armour. However, the energy to form the penetrating jet comes from explosives in the round itself, not from the rounds kinetic energy. liquids are usually easier to compress than solids.

An interesting and fun, although very messy video. There's some nasty, very nasty stuff in lithium batteries, all that black stuff is horribly toxic and will have cobalt from the electrodes mixed in there.
I have a question: were the batteries bullets charged up before being shot, or were they drained?
Reason I ask is that I expected a bit more fire, as lithium is very reactive with oxygen. If the battery was charged, the lithium would be in its elemental form, which is unstable and wants to be oxidised. When the battery was charged, the lithium in the battery would react almost explosively with the air to oxidise to lithium oxide. But if the battery was flat, then the lithium is already oxidised to something stable, so it can't react with the air.
Maybe when Taufledermaus revisits battery bullets in the future, you could try charging some of the cells up and seeing if they're any more spectacular than the others?
