  • Ever hear people say "Shoot them in the lungs and they won't spray!" or... "Shoot them in the head and it disables their nervous system and they can't spray!" Ha! Yeah, right... we've done it all -- and they still sprayed. Until, that is, we went to this method... Quick, humane, and no spray. #trapper #trapping #skunks

    I tried this and it didn't go well. Caught one skunk and tried to stick it with the needle. Little did I know, 4 other skunks were watching me as I moved in on the trapped skunk. I apparently didn't wait long enough for the skunk to go to sleep. When I picked him up and released his leg, he screamed out and 4 other skunks jumped out and they started spraying me together with the other skunk. Had to go to the emergency for chronic nausea after being sprayed real good in the mouth. Ended up being admitted due to dehydration from constantly vomiting.
    I wont try this again. Skunks can have my yard.

    They are beautiful animals. I caught a baby once, and then I let it go right away. I also rescued an adult skunk that fell into a pit in an abandoned pump house at an old farm site. It took some persistence, but I managed to scoop it out with a 2x4. As the skunk walked away it stopped, looked back at me, and then continued to walk away.

    I've been sprayed a few times by skunks that I caught while trapping other animals. Nothing compares to that smell. You also can't outrun their spray; I tried and failed. This is a good method to have in your back pocket if you need it. But I am being honest and saying I have caught two live skunks by the tail without getting sprayed. This was how an old timer told me to do it. Just grab them and lift off of the ground. I'm sure you've all heard it before. But it actually worked. What didn't work was when we put them into a gunny sack to take them home. We had them hanging out the car window when they crawled up the bag and let loose. We threw them alongside of the road. I'll never do it again.

      Great stories! You can always classify people in small, elite segments of the population: less than 2% will ever be called “rich” ... a small percentage has green eyes, etc. Probably an even more select few have ever actually witnessed that yellow, sulphuric cloud coining at them through the air knowing there’s not a darn thing they can do about it, and then experiencing a smell so horrific it actually makes a person vomit.
      Good times. 😁

    I have live trapped 5 now and released them miles away without getting sprayed once. Slowly drape a towel or rag over the cage covering all sides. You can then pick up the cage by the handle, transport to a vehicle, then way down the road. Releasing can be a bit hectic, but a little nudge gets them on their way. It helps if you can release them near a ditch or wooded area.

    My brother was watching me pull a skunk out of a groundhog den, and as I aimed and shot the skunk with a .22 pistol the skunk sprayed.

    I have tried all the so called skunk smell remedies to remove skunk from dog fur only thing that works is the go joe style mechanics hand degreaser in the gallon. Skunk spray has a oil base and all those home made fixes don't work on dogs or people either. Get the natural orange based one that won't hurt your eyes or your dogs if thats what your doing. Use a half gallon of it on you medium size dog, massage it really well into fur and skin and rinse with garden hose. Strips the oil right off and follow up with a enzymes skunk spray. Use cloth and degreaser around eyes don't get it directly in dogs eyes. Spray off dog first with garden hose if you have that availably the sooner you treat yourself or dog the better. Like I said I tried all of these recipes and this one is the only one that really works. If treated early you can have your dog skunk smell free in a couple of hours. After your dog is almost dry completely soak him in the enzymes skunk spray and let it dry you may need a second enzymes soak. I have killed close to 30 skunks in the last decade or so and most of those have sprayed one or more of my dogs.

    Long ago as an impressionable young man my dear Grandpa told me if you gut shoot a skunk he won't spray. Shortly there after one fine evening I got told not to shoot anymore skunks near the house, and to swap that .357 for a .22 A few days later the next time came around and with my newly gained wisdom, wouldn't you know I took an indirect hit from a greatly displeased skunk with a small calibur abdominal wound. Well third times a charm, I finally got lucky. Just after dark I came across a skunk that had backed himself in a 5 gallon bucket. No more mistakes this time! I ran for my old side by side 12ga and touches off both barrels when Le Pew poked his head out for a look. My ears ringing, the smoke swirling from a softball size hole just at my feet, I observed everything forward the shoulders had vanished. To my horror who knew that stink glows in the dark? I ran the bucket just as far as I could hold my breath. Coming back inside, the tale that night was a skunk can't spray with his feet off the ground. Looking back years later, I think Grandpa had a twisted sense of humor.

    Wild. Would acetone injection not burn like liquid fire in your body? I'd rather just get shot, but results speak for themselves here. I ain't a doctor or a skunk hunter, why is this so effective?

    • @StaggsintheWild
      @StaggsintheWild  4 роки тому +6

      I think the reaction of the skunks show it's not painful to them... there's countless videos out there of this technique and they never have adverse reactions; they simply lose consciousness without spraying. Dispatching by gunshot is effective, too -- but you're risking a spray irrespective of shot placement.

      Typically, the only animal this technique is really advised on is skunks -- as they're fairly docile when approached in a non-threatening manner, and there's nothing to worry about such as the pungent spray on an opossum. Definitely do NOT try it on a bocat, as there's absolutely no way a cat would sit still long enough to use this technique.

      I just left this in the comments section but I wanted to make sure you got it. This is how you clean a skunked dog. I keep a gallon or 2 of the orange based hand degreaser at all times. I also live in town so I can't shoot them either. I just trap and drowned them in a garbage can I keep just for skunks.... After your dog is almost dry completely soak him to the skin in the enzymes skunk spray and let it dry you may need a second enzymes soak. I have killed close to 30 skunks in the last decade or so and most of those have sprayed one or more of my dogs.

Grind a couple up and mush it in some table scraps and leave it out for the skunks and coons. Merely rubbing some of the seed interior on a scratch on you hand can produce serious bad results so wear gloves don't breath any dust and play safe. one seed will kill a 200 pound animal

    How quickly does the acetone put down the animal?
    Ive got a skunk issue and I have chickens... but I struggle with putting down animals. I understand the necessity and support humane dispatch methods and I support trappers like yourself, so don't take me to be some PETA nut.
    I just struggle with putting down animals... Is this a superior method over a .22 in the top of the head? It seems that would dispatch the animal quicker. I have had to do that with an ermine that latched onto one of my chicken's legs. Instant kill.

    • @StaggsintheWild
      @StaggsintheWild  2 роки тому +7

      All great questions, and I understand your concerns. This method generally puts the animal out within about 30 seconds, and no suffering is exhibited; they simply go out. A .22 to the head is more instantaneous obviously, but 9 times out of 10, they'll spray.

I laughed about it and took a shower with hydrogen peroxide & baking soda . You have no compassion if you can do this to an innocent animal .

    • @StaggsintheWild
      @StaggsintheWild  2 роки тому +6

      Because sound wildlife management practice doesn't have anything to do with a "cuteness" scale. Skunks are among the top nest-robbing predators in nature, along with opossums and raccoons. Quail and turkey populations are plummeting at an astonishing rate, and much of their demise is due to the ever-shrinking pool of trappers who hung up their steel.
      Where the wild turkey used to flourish, man has by and large walked away from its responsibility that God gave him as caretakers, imbued with the charge of governing all creation, and caring for ALL species, not just the "cute" ones. Keeping the predator population in check is vitally important -- for animals "downstream" of their rampant numbers, but also for the predator themselves. Disease and starvation is no pretty thing when you witness it in an overpopulated area.
      Moving a predator from one area to another doesn't solve a problem; it merely changes its location, and often makes it harder on the animal itself as it has to fight for its place in the pecking order again.

We have a skunk that has a tacky attitude and sprays just enough to let us know he/she exist but have never seen it. Will not trap or kill it/them (at this point). • @StaggsintheWild
      @StaggsintheWild  2 роки тому +4

      Because along with raccoons and opossums, skunks comprise the largest threat to the future of the wild turkey. These nest-robbers, gone largely unchecked over the last decade as fur prices have dropped, have contributed to plummeting populations across our country.
      Aside from that, if a population isn’t controlled it is easy for them to succumb to disease and starvation. These animals also establish territorial ranges and just removing one from one place and dropping it into another can cause additional problems such as fierce fighting between the new transplant and established residents - plus it’s not helping with the aforementioned problems.

      I get what you're saying and I appreciate your drive for a quick humane death, but this isnt as intense as it seems. The acetone is used because it evaports very quickly and any reaction to it is very mild. The acetone gas displaces the oxygen in its lungs which essentially puts it to sleep before killing it. The worst part for the skunk is most likely the fight or flight that it faces when a human approaches it while trapped.
