Finally someone giving the Camcorders some love.
This guy is freaking cool. The world needs more people like you.
Ditto that comment. Need more human beings like Marcus
Yeah.

Amazing video. I can only imagine what a nightmare it must have been swapping out all of those cameras/lenses/batteries/SD cards, and all the footage. I've never seen so many camera/lens combos in one video.
My biggest takeaway from watching this is that you can get the same shot with any camera and lens combo- the only difference will be sharpness and amount of bokeh. Every shot looked the same, colorgrade, composition, etc. Pretty cool :)
One of the finest videos out of hundreds I've looked at trying to make decisions on video gear from an old-school pro-photographer? Kudos Markus!
Those Sony VG bodies have the best ergonomics, and are such a joy to use. I remember renting a few when they first hit the market for some pick-up shots. After years of shouldering heavy professional cams, I fell in love with the size and weight. If Sony put a current sensor with a 10-bit codec in those bodies, I would buy one immediately. Please, Sony. Bring the VG series back!
Let's start a petition!
I am cameraman for my whole life ... and what you are talking about video cameras Sir, it makes a perfect common sense to me, just because of:
*- overheating free*
*- ergonomics*
*- functions designated to make video films*
*- akcessories*
*- working comfort*
- etc.
As a dedicated photographer that honestly wishes companies would sell lower priced non-video still photography cameras. Your intro hits the nail on the head. Camcorders are ergonomic for video recording. I want to get into cinematography and the idea of holding a Dslr or mirrorless camera seems so cumbersome. I'm here to learn how to choose an entry level camcorder.
Just get a freaking huge lens, then you don't mind what's on its back
I seem to be that person who buys and later the market changes and what I've bought becomes obsolete within a year.
I started with a 35mm camera I could afford a Kowa sEtr it came with a 50mm lens and a 135mm Telephoto.
It was stolen and later replaced it with a Pentax K1000 but due to having a family all I really did was buy a couple of lenses couldn't afford alot of film processing.
Digital came around and bought a Minolta 5mp camera took some pretty good photos but gave it away when I bought a Pentax K10D. Still stuck on still photography. Shortly afterward both Pentax and Minolta are no more and Sony ends up as the beneficiary of some pretty good internal tech they needed. This is about the time 12 and 18 Mp cameras make their debut, along with video capabilities.
I also bought a Sony Handycam 8mm tape rather than VHS but you can transfer video to your PC and edit it.
Now I'd like to get a decent camera with 1080 res but all I see are el cheapo stuff or completely outta my range.
Oh well I guess it's time to stop belly achin and keep looking.
Watching this video 3 years after this was made still the information is very much relevant on how one should approach selecting equipment. You know what shines in this video .... the passion of the creator and sharing knowledge. Simple explanation and from heart. Thank you !
I'm not that interested by video shooting but your so sparkingly alive it's a pleasure to watch your videos. Keep going.

I really do love how you just show us the quality of each camera or lens very quickly and smoothly on screen without all the talk talk talking. As they say a picture speaks a thousand words. Also the I love how you do the giveaway asking people to not send multiple begging letters etc.
Thank you! This was fun to watch as well as being informative and well produced. I assumed I would not make it through the whole video, but I didn't even look at the time until I was about 23 mins in.
I remember when Vegan Gains lent me his VG900. I almost bought it, but people preferred my little Canon G7X lol. I wish they would update that line!
Im surprised you had time to comment while doing pull ups and looking for the perfect camera
Still waiting for the Northrup metric system video. Hahahaha cheers man, you have great content.
Wonderful, more Canon color science which turns green into teal.
All I want is the perfect camera. The perfect camera for me is as light as the a6000 and performs as the A7RIII. It has a lens light as the Zeiss 35 F2.8 but performs as the GM 24mm F1.4.
Kasey there is a spin-off show in here somewhere for you. Try to win one of these lower end camcorders maybe and do a comparison to your SH1 ... I’d watch that and learn nothing!
"Give-a-way"???? I"m floored. I've come across two channels that just give stuff away. I am a 60 year old Canadian who feels like he's stuck in life but... well... "tries", I guess is the word. I've never BEEN hardly anywhere except that I moved to Michigan. I'd LOVE to live THERE for a tiny while! Anyway. I'm FASCINATED by your videos. THANK YOU FOR DOING THEM! I used to work at camera stores when I was a young man back in Canada. I'm only now trying to edge into video. LOTS more to learn! I have a LOT of experience in "photography" and I guess that helps. I was suffering from a health issue that made it so I could hardly carry a Nikon with a 300mm lens around my neck without dealing with a lot of pain. BUT photography is part of the healing, isn't it??? And now, things are looking up and the health is returning.
Anyway, I'm yammering on. Thank you for your wisdom and suggestions. Do you have a camera STORE or something? I can't begin to imagine just COLLECTING all that cool gear, otherwise! Cheers! :-)
Hey Markus! I really love your concept of "doing your best or what you can with what you have". I also love the fact that you always come up with unusual and cheap ways ot shooting amazing videos or pictures with creative ideas/ material. I do really learn and appreciate your videos.....
Finally someone mentions the Sony VG series I still have my VG20 and VG900 great cameras I think those cameras were a hidden gem ........ they are so lightweight still being a camcorder great for cinematography.
This video gave me goose bumps its like I watched 1000 videos compile into one. This guy is simply amazing. Officially the best.

A year ago I added a comment to this video. I have made nearly 100 UA-cam videos since that comment. I have grown to appreciate your ideas about smaller, lighter and easier. I certainly don't want a camera with all the XLR stuff on the handle, or a camera rigged out to look like I am shooting a remake of Ben Hur. When you are actually out shooting, you learn to appreciate the MarcusPix way of doing it. I've learned a lot from watching your channel. It's more real than a lot of the super-tech channels. I don't think a lot of these people shoot in the real world. Cheers and Thanks from Saigon

The well known documentary Marcy Made about DeHaven Irby, who was Jay-Z’s mentor, is filmed entirely with the JVC-GYLS300. The movie looked really good. The JVC is an awesome buy!
Yeah it took me a while but I get it now. This stuff is what someone needs who wants to film an actual, publishable, feature length production at a budget. (Where the budget is still a few thousand dollar). If you'd do that with a hybrid camera fiddling to get around all the still-shoot options it'd just be a frustrating experience and you'll probably give up before finishing.
This video is just what I needed, right on the money. I have two small channels and I began my UA-cam journey using camcorders. I have recently tried to use a DSLR for video but I just don't like it, it's too much hassle. I am so glad I came across this video, really, really loved it. Thank you!!!!!
I'm just getting into this world and I'm a heavy research guy. I find your video's the most informative from this all. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH
You can also be happy with a G85 or a Sony 6600 and a nice sharp lens. Maybe add a metabones. These are nice cameras, but some of them are pretty old by now.
Yes for short 10 minutes videos, they are fine. They take great video but they are not ergonomically made for video
@@MarkusPix Agree. I went and got the VG 30 in 2020 as it's better suited for camcorder style shooting. I still use my A7 R3 if its short clips!
@@MarkusPix Your video made me al enthusiastic but then I looked at the second hand prices of the JVC and Sony and ... :D ... I think I get your point now though, if someone has the budget for a new mid/high end hybrid camera, but the goal is to actually really go into the cinema production-style setup and workflow (e.g. as an art student), these second hand camcorders might be a better option to start for that budget instead of fiddling with hybrid cameras. Thank you for this insight!
@@mipmipmipmipmip Yes. And certainly when it comes to all the extra's you need to get that photocamera behave like a videocamera (no powerzoom, bad battery life in video mode, lacking professional connectivity, those sort of things)
I like this video just because there are at least still people that value videocamera's over photocameras, just like me.
My G85 is great, but it has been relegated to a B cam and webcam because of the poor autofocus and 4K crop.
My Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II is my A cam. It's still far from perfect for video, but either of these cameras is capable of shooting 4K video that is good enough for 95% of scenarios. My E-M1 II can also autofocus very well in video.
I would love to have a real cinema camera, especially with a full-frame sensor. The Sony FX6 appeals to me a lot. Built-in ND filters are also a big deal.
Then again, I wonder if I would actually use such a camera as often. I'm just an amateur, and my backpack is already pretty rough to carry.
There are workarounds for the battery problem, especially on cameras that can be powered over USB-C. The ergonomics can be addressed with rigging, and I do have a cage and handles for my E-M1 II as well as an external monitor.
No one has figured out how to include ND filters on a hybrid camera yet, but I bet that will happen soon enough. In the meantime, my variable ND filters attached to my lenses do the job well enough.
You look like a cross of Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson. Awesome.

Hey Markus so I have to add my feedback. I found you about 2 weeks ago after a lot of youtube research on how vlogs are presented. By far you have the best quality recorded videos out there. Your expalnation is detailed and rich and to do this on multipul cameras is a lot of patience and hard work. Your clear precise and understand the technology YOU ARE the point reference on recording on the internet today! 4K yeah if people understand how many factors of recording out-way just to have 4K to get that better result they probably would buy the perfect camera if they just listend to your advice. I only have 450 in my budget so I wil get the Panasonic V800K recommended in your last camcorder video, with an understanding that most people as yet dont have a 4K TV. As YOU said its all recommendations in a budget, and dont just buy it becuase it says 4k. I have spent weeks understanding, resolution, night filming (Thermal), aperture, ISO , Light and megapixels as a technology. Compared with all available functions and options, not to mention O.I.S and gimbals. Thanks for another WONDERFUL Video. & No not interested in your give away. You gave me so much already. Everytime I wil use the camcorder YOU will be on my mind! Thanks for saving me a load of hassle & wasted money!
You've got amazing technical knowledge! Keeps me wanting to learn more. Thanks!
Thanks a lot Markus for all the knowledge you are sharing with no strings attached...
Always great content. I'm always curious why there are so many vloggers out there complaining about DSLR cameras not working very well for video. I see the draw to using the right tool for the right project.
Those who complain about the cost of cameras for youtubing vlogging and Etc, most of them have an $800 iPhone in their pockets trying to keep up when they are actually broke trying to impress others.
lmao iphone
This is an amazing breakdown. I shoot stills with an a6000 and a7ii, but I always imagined that these cameras would break the bank.
Could you tell us your lighting setup? It's incredibly balanced!
Thanks, lighting coming in upcoming videos
I love this guy. He knows his stuff. Thank you Sir. I wish I could come see you.
A big greeting from Italy, finally a video where reasoned things are said and not a video made to make visualization numbers saying a large amount of useless things. I have been a photo / cine operator for 25 years and I can say that if you want to be a serious professional for videos you use a video camera and a reflex for photos. Everything else is marketing to sell useless things to useless people. Bravo, keep it up, a hug.

Welcome Eric!
I'm at a stage in my life where I'm going to jump in blind with no idea how to operate a camera or shoot film cinematography. The will is burning inside to create. Wish me dumb luck fam. 🤞
wait wait wait wait, are you shooting actual film or are you shooting digital?
@@AnimeZone247
Oh, digital. I wish I had a clue. 😮😂
Good luck! Read and study as much as possible. Learn like the mechanisms behind how the cameras work. Like physically how it works. That has helped me a lot to understand!!
@@seuqram0145 Also I would say... Study the psychology behind film editing. There's some great videos on UA-cam for that. And learn about things like storyboarding, which is setting up your shots in a way to make it cinematic. And the most important thing overall, beside good audio, is good storytelling. So always start from the part and you will progress greatly!! ✅
It's an ongoing journey and should always be growing. Because you will always learn more no matter how long you've done it. And that's good that means we're thinking in new ways! It's the type of thing where you always learn and realize new things! ✅
@@padkirsch
Thanks, I've been doing just that.
I saw this video when it came out. They are amazing but my budget is like a third of those lol. I am more like in the 200 to 300 dollar range is there something for the little guy? Got to start somewhere thank you for all your videos I have learned so much.
Start out with your phone and see what you can do. When you outgrow that maybe head to ebay or craigslist and buy a used mirrorless or DSLR. If/when you outgrow that then graduate to things he is talking about. I am tempted to buy new stuff but I have done that too many times in my life with other hobbies things, not used them to full capacity, and think back to the money I essentially threw out. With age comes wisdom. At least that's my two cents. Best of luck in your adventures!
Hard working review - I’ve got a Sony VG900 and it was great to see you test the next upgrade, the Sony FS5ii.
I'm a former professional still photographer Canon guy who after many years is coming out of retirement and stepping into a new world. It's overwhelming. Your videos are very helpful Markus, Thank you.
The mere fact that you said, *SSD stands for Solid State Drive,* made me leave a comment and thumbs UP this awesome video. Reason being that a lot of content creators may presume or think the viewers watching their content should know these technical/acronym terms. With this booming generation and UA-cam being an amazing platform/outlet to teach and learn, I feel one should think about the audience you are catering to always. You may have a new buddy viewer as old as 65 or as young as 11 that is interested in getting into videography or photography, whether as a hobby or deep interest and those technical terms may be unfamiliar to them, so I feel it really helps to keep the teacher/student mindset as a content creator. Great job!!
This video looks straight out of 2007. I love it
Not a chance. 2007 = 240p- 480p at best.
Loving the content in your videos Markus. I am taking away something new every time I watch. Thanks mate.
