I bought the CX405 after seeing your first review with about 20 other cameras. I used it to film a high school performance as a side hustle. I stay away from MP4 but I'd love to see a video on different feels and making that first choice as to format etc. I am a true "prosumer" in some ways and slight pro in others and love learning from you. In the past I alway though camcorders were not up to par with any mirrorless camera but after watching your videos for over a year and half you have made me think about getting the Panasonic VX981. I was always taught that mirrorless cameras were the way to go when shooting video but that isn’t the case. Keep up making great informative videos Mark!
No most dslr are rubbish for video hence why so many people use extra mics etc etc where sith a camcorder you don't I filmed loads of my videos on my channel with a Panasonic w570 and is a great camcorder with 90x optical zoom which you don't get on a 500+ priced camera
Sax, camcorders are the original mirrorless video cameras. They never had mirrors embedded in the optical viewfinder. Mirrorless cameras are just adopting camcorder technology. There's nothing new about mirrorless cameras technologically. They are just a new application of existing older camcorder technology. The only difference is the ability to use interchangeable lenses. You can actually buy camcorders that use interchangeable lenses, but they are expensive.
@@MarkusPix I went to buy one after your review. Can you believe the CX405 has been on backorder in Australia for three months according to the store I use. I'm going to have to look around, maybe try and find used.

Looks like you had a great time on vacation. I've grown to like camcorders over the years. The Panasonic was great. Picked up a different model, but similar in specs. The convenience of the form factor is nice. Mahalo for sharing 🤙
I've always used camcorders. Started with a Sony analog 8mm tape unit, went to the Panasonic MX400 with MinDV tapes, switched to the Sony HDRJP760VE with gimballed lens and right now I'm using a Panasonic HC-X1500 (as shown in this vdeo as the "prosumer" camcorder). I'm not a brand fanboi -- I just choose the best camcorder to match my budget and needs at the time. The HC-X1500 is great (for me) because it has 24-600mm (35mm equiv) zoom, built-in ND filters, will do 4K @60FPS (very few affordable camcorders go over 30FPS @4K), has fully manual controls of iris, focus, gain/ISO and some cool professional-level features for less than the body of a mirrorless camera alone. I don't need to take anything but the camera with me when I go filming, no lenses, filters, spare batteries or anything. I can film for up to 4 hours continuous on a single battery too. Not perfect though... I plan to do a video this camera and expose some of its *really* annoying weaknesses/flaws. But it's the best I could find without spending twice as much money and camcorders are my preferred choice.
@@brat54914 Yeah, but will your mirrorless Sony record continuously for four hours on a single battery in the blazing hot sun of a summer's day? Will your Sony produce this kind of footage (note the large zoom range): ua-cam.com/video/u3sHu7r-rp0/v-deo.html
@@brat54914 sorry you can buy a new mirrorless Canon/Nikon/Sony/Panasonic etc camera with a 5 way optical stabilised 16 to 400 zoom that can shoot continuously all day in the heat with no recording limits & has external input for auto gain stereo audio & a large vlogging monitor for less than $800 Where??
Just discovered your videos a few days ago....great job!!!! You're very laid back yet energetic, and get right to the point! I just bought a Panasonic VX-970M from Japan, can't wait to get it in!!
Wow! Those are both sweet video options and just as sweet as the couple shooting this video. You both have so much fun and are a head above everyone else in presenting the masses with photography options. Markus thank you for your fun, professional and honest presentations that are always fact filled and spattered with eye candy from the always electrifying Cara. Happy New Year and cheers to many more successful photo shoots in 2022.
I have this Panasonic camera for years, and film concerts with it. I usually use the tele setting because I have a better overview and the sound is also better from a distance. This camera is so good that I haven't been able to find a better one yet. Unobtrusive and stable, that's important. It is often a gray area, but usually filming a concert is not a problem. The camera is super sharp even at the extreme tele setting. I first used a Rode external microphone until I forgot about it and had to record the sound with the camera microphone. To my surprise, this mic was better than the Rode mic. Now I stand out even less. Unfortunately it is no longer for sale and second hand I do not see it either.
I actually bought a Sony CX 405 last year for $100 used and it was only used once for a baby shower. Great deal and an even better camcorder. Have to give you credit because I saw a video you made talking about it. Thanks for your help and all the cool videos...
4th! Lol The Sony CX405, I film my whole channel with this tiny camcorder, thanks to you for your recommendation to buy this! That review video was hilarious! The zoom is damn great for filming my stuff, for closeup shots without a camera getting in my way. I feel that, despite its lack of megapixels compared to my Samsung A50s smartphone, the video results are better... The only cons of CX405 is the grainy texture in poor lighting... I always believe a skilled artist can do well with basic tools.
Love all your videos. A cool camcorder Panasonic VX981 with the mic set up you can shoot a run and gun feature film. And the price is nothing compared to what I paid over the years for high end equipment, Red One MX, SONY F35, that just sits there waiting for the next project with a small army. Looking forward to your next vid.....
You opened my eyes wide! I have a camcorder that I got in a thrift auction and the moment I pushed the record button, I instantly felt the joy of shooting come back to me, something this old gal wasn't feeling as I tried to trip out my Canon 5dm4 with a bankroll for the accessories it needed. The weight of carrying that around as a one woman show was too much pressure on my bunions! I realized that I had been duped, mabye just a bit -- that cinematic look could be a bit of a stretch, and it's all over youtube. Your approach is so much more refreshing. As for cinematic, I suppose I could continue to geek out my dslr, but as you know this best, Markus, "cinematic" takes a village of people who have expertise in various areas of production. You and your beautiful wife have made filming a joy -- you are the best. I am ready for my next camcorder, and I think it will be the VX981. The sound is a little ify coming out of the camera, but you showed the best ways to handle that. Burn that credit card! It's Christmas and Santa needs to head over to Best Buy if they carry it! I am buying myself a new camera, or should I wait for the sales? LOL -- you helped me figure out what I'd like next.
I have 2 Canon HF R-800 camcorders i use to record plays for a school. I use them in places where they can just run and capture "B" roll clips I can go to when the main camcorder isn't getting a good clip. I love them and they just keep going and going and they were cheap on Ebay
You are so much fun! You're so knowledgeable about camcorders. I am following your content. I too enjoy the camcorder revolution. Hope they never stop making them. They just keep getting better and better!
Thank you Markus for your wonderful reviews. I found a great deal on a Sony CX405 and was blown away with not only how good this camcorder really is, but how fun it is to use! Always wishing you peace and health.❤
Well that comparison left me lusting for the Panasonic, but also convinced that for my price range, The Sony will definitely serve me well with quite decent quality for such a low price. Thanks for the great video! You've helped demystify things, right about when I was starting to feel totally overwhelmed and thinking there were no good options on my very limited budget!
The master is back at it again, nothing inspires me more to work on my lighting like your videos. Thanks to your content I have a new found appreciation and infatuation with beautiful lighting.
Simply amazing; I had no idea those camcorders were that handy, useful & versatile! Why are wedding videographers moving away from camcorders? Quality video, Thanks MarkusPix!
I just ordered a CX405 for capturing up-close video of my scale models. I feel much better about my purchase after seeing those zoomed in shots on the finches! Thanks dude!
As a blind person I occasionally have to take video as I belong to a global virtual choir, and this sounds like just the thing. Hand it to a helper, they open it up and press record (with a mic plugged in of course) and it's done with no hassles - and I wouldn't have to hand over my phone. Awesome.
Wow, I'm rethinking the whole camcorder thing now. Being able to get background blur AND crazy zoom in an all-in-1 form factor is a game-changer for outdoor work. I'm guessing the stability is pretty decent as well?
I've an old Panasonic 300, and it still performs like new. I've always preferred Panasonic to other brands because they have Leica lenses. The sound recording is good too.
Markus, you are a joyful human-being. Thank you for making the perfect video for me. I was looking at buying a new iPhone.. with the main advantage over my current old phone being great 4K video recording. Then I realised, the smart money for that will be an alternative - and you would be The Guy who new. Thank you Sir. Wow - the zoom on the Sony is amazing! The Panasonic has crisper, clearer image quality... very nice. Wow - great options!
Your bigger comparo video got me to pull the trigger on a CX-405 about 6 months ago. Works great. Before that, I was using a decent M43 still camera for video, but it treated it as a secondary feature (which it is) and most of the quicker lenses had noise issues.
Quite impressive for a retro tech. I wonder how the match up with modern smartphones in terms of ease of use, quality, heating etc. Would love to see such video! Excellent job!
Holy smokes that Panasonic is incredible!!!!...Along with that female energy!... And always remember it's not the quality of the camera - it's the story that matters!!!
I do find myself watching older movies and dramas from the 90s and 80s. It's the content that matters! Same camera works, low megapixels but captivating! Movies nowadays are unwatchable despite being 4k Good video clarity is only a bonus, of course everyone wants 4k resolution for their creations.
@@sabitislamshanto6269 it still works AND my batteries were still holding a full charge after maybe 2 years in storage. Really, REALLY noisy in low light. The image is good in daylight and facial recognition autofocus works. Stabilization is good. It's a better image than a 16:9 reframed image from my insta360 one X2. Internal mic is terrible and picks up all the noise from the lens stabilisation.
Wow, I haven't watched your videos in a long time, probably due to the notifications emails are no longer a thing, but man I love your videos it sometmes ends up costing me some money because I'll order some of the camcorders you show here, my wife just bought me a Minolta MN4K25NV for my birthday, I'm just hoping its decent quality but since Sony owns Minolta I expect it to be somewhat decent.
I love your videos, man I stumbled on your channel last night just subbed! Was wondering if you could answer a question I am considering buying a camcorder to help me film my Golf Course content. I would love it to be able to shoot 4K at 60 frames per second possibly a Sony log footage and have a microphone input. Also built-in ND would be huge as this is in Florida. Is there any suggestions you could give me?
Hey @MarkusPix, thanks for your great videos. Especially this one encouraged me to buy the Sony CX 405. Small, ilightweighted, good picture quality and sound. I also own the Sony RX 100 ii and the Sony Alpha 7 ii but the CX 405 is the one I use more often. Wonderful. And thanks to you for your information and your passion for camcorders. Greets!
I love you and your partner, she’s so cute and hilarious. Also great video, I’m going to get the cheaper option for some candid shots on my honeymoon, thank you!
I think the real question is “what is the right camera to shoot video and still photos with”. The answer is the camera that you own and have available to shoot at that moment. Why I like these UA-cam videos is that it helps me identify how I can improve my ability shooting as a hobby. Taking both video and photography up a notch from a point and shoot situation really makes the difference in quality. The hardware is important but so is composition and storytelling. “If it ain’t on the page, it ain’t on the stage” so to speak. That also applies somewhat to photography, such as the 2/3rds rule as an example. This doesn’t mean walking around with a procedure and work order although this has happened to me working overseas and offshore. It means to have a review list close and review it before starting a shoot. Well, it helps out from time to time.
I love my Olympus EM-1 MK II for simple, decent quality stabilized video, but I have to admit that Sony is way smaller and more versatile with that zoom range for a simple family trip than getting out my Sigma primes for close shots and zooms for action shots. There might just be a role for Camcorders in my life after all.
I just had the same idea... I have an old cx I use for skateboarding, and hell is it way lighter and smaller than the EM-1 MK2... time to get a newer version
Thank you 👍 Very interesting description! You have a great clean pronunciation. I am learning English and such videos are very useful for me. I have Sony 405 too. Very good camera
I'm currently using cx 405's (3) for my streaming productions. They all work wonderfully and the audio as mentioned is amazing for such a lightweight consumer camera.
When streaming can you get audio through the HDMI cable? I ask because I have the CX240, which is very similar to the 405, and cannot get audio to come through to my computer.
@@crosswhite17 I do but also use a encoder that has audio mics and depending on situation use Rhode wireless mics as inputs. Sometimes you have to try a different brand of hdmi . I’ve heard that sometimes is the problem .
@@DArmstrongMedia My hdmi cable is the Sony that came with the camera. If I play a recorded video through the cable I get sound, but if I just use the camera to stream I get no audio. Very frustrating.
I like the mic input because the camcoder itself makes some kind of creaking sound, and built in mics pick it. 60x zoon and even 1500x digital zoom(!?) is amazing along with the image stabilization. It's amazing how nowadays camcoders can take such clear vivid beautiful images just like Markus demonstrated. I just love them.
Thanks for showing me this video Markuspix. I'm thinking about upgrading from my Sony CX240 camcorder to the Panasonic for my basketball videos. Just need a couple weeks to save up or hopefully I find a used one in good shape.
Thanks so much, Markus. Ive watched your other camcorder compare video multiple times and have purchased multiple of the cheaper options. Ive kept my eye out for a used CX405. I'll get one one of these days. Thanks so much for sharing your experience!
The lens hood design in this HC-VX981 is better than the newer HC-VX1. You can use the lens hood irrespective of the lens filter in the VX981 whereas in the HC-VX1 the lens hood is tiny and it is screwed in like a filter. So if you have to have an ND filter on VX1 you cannot have the hood on, if you screw the hood on to the filter then it creates a vignetting from the lens hood.

The only channel where i blast the highest resolution setting just to see what cheap camcorder could do
I've always used camcorders.
Any day, any time is great for another Markus video.
Man you're drunk 🤣🤣🤣 camera u suggested Panasonic hcx1500 cost 2000$$ I can get mirorrless Sony for cheaper lol
How does Panasonic colour science intercut with Sony in post??
@@brat54914 sorry you can buy a new mirrorless Canon/Nikon/Sony/Panasonic etc camera with a 5 way optical stabilised 16 to 400 zoom that can shoot continuously all day in the heat with no recording limits & has external input for auto gain stereo audio & a large vlogging monitor for less than $800
Where??
Just discovered your videos a few days ago....great job!!!! You're very laid back yet energetic, and get right to the point! I just bought a Panasonic VX-970M from Japan, can't wait to get it in!!
I agree. I still use my JVC GZ-EX250EU after all these year (40x zoom, HD only, tiny), especially for simple timelapses (up to 2 hours on battery).
Thank you
I purchased one of these because of your recommendation. I carry it almost everywhere.
Me too!
Nice! Have had the Ax 53 for years and loved it. When time to replace it may be these two!
I’m glad someone is posting videos about camcorders.
Such a great video, thank you for demonstrating these great camcorders. I had no idea they could produce such sharp and colorful videos! 🤩👍
I actually bought a Sony CX 405 last year for $100 used and it was only used once for a baby shower. Great deal and an even better camcorder. Have to give you credit because I saw a video you made talking about it. Thanks for your help and all the cool videos...
Can I buy it from you for $100
@@Alex_Manifestation111 Not for sale at any price. Good luck shopping...
I bought the Sony CX405 after your very 1st review and I love it for traveling because it’s soo compact.
Great to hear!
4th! Lol
The Sony CX405, I film my whole channel with this tiny camcorder, thanks to you for your recommendation to buy this!
Thanks Markus! I always enjoy your youtube videos! Very informative and fun!
Yes its definitely a joy to use
Thanks for the great review. Bought Panasonic VX981 for my travel videos after watching your reviews 📹📹. I really love the zoom lens 🔎.
👍
I just ordered a CX405 for capturing up-close video of my scale models. I feel much better about my purchase after seeing those zoomed in shots on the finches! Thanks dude!
I have both of these cameras and I LOVE them.
Amazing presentation sir! Since I was a kid I always love camcorders (currently turning 38 this year) thank you for this video. Peace!
I've an old Panasonic 300, and it still performs like new. I've always preferred Panasonic to other brands because they have Leica lenses. The sound recording is good too.
Thank you for all your content I appreciate your expertise and your love for cameras, mic's, lights ext. I'm really glad I discovered your channel.
I appreciate that!
i ordered the cx405 a couple days ago
cant wait till it gets here
Also, a very attractive model!!!!!
Can't understand how you don't have more subs. So professional, enthusiastic and humble (positiv way) at the same time. Respect 😊
My old Sony HDR-CX220 still takes great video. I also like my Sony FDR-AX53. Both of them use the same batteries.
Wow, these little cameras shoot great images!
I FREAKING LOVE THIS VIDEO. That cx405 is impressive and the Panasonic for 800 bucks too is great
Great video Markus. Stunning quality from both cams sound and pics of the birds were very good ,,, TFS. Best wishes from UK England Phil 👍
Excellent video... I think Sony CX can even be used for documentary work
Your bigger comparo video got me to pull the trigger on a CX-405 about 6 months ago.
Movies nowadays are unwatchable despite being 4k
Good video clarity is only a bonus, of course everyone wants 4k resolution for their creations.
I love camcorders. I love that you make these.
I started my channel with a CX405 back in 2017. I still have it, packed away safely. I think I’ll play with it this weekend. ❤️
How is the video quality?
@@sabitislamshanto6269 it still works AND my batteries were still holding a full charge after maybe 2 years in storage.
Really, REALLY noisy in low light. The image is good in daylight and facial recognition autofocus works. Stabilization is good. It's a better image than a 16:9 reframed image from my insta360 one X2. Internal mic is terrible and picks up all the noise from the lens stabilisation.
WOW!!! I’m sold on the 981! Definitely going to buy this asap!!! Thank you!!!
Markus love you videos, you are a great couple! Greetings from Italy. One day come to Amalfi coast on vacation.
Your presentations are excellent! Love your work Markus!
Thanks for taking me to Jamaica with y’all now I want a camcorder
Thanks Markus! Great reviews and perspective. Impressive quality for the money. Audio, image and zoom on both are amazing!
Best channel for camcorders. More these things.
Yes!! 😊 Happy New Year, Markus, Cara and all. Much luv
I'm digging that Panasonic.
Thank you 👍
Very interesting description!
You have a great clean pronunciation. I am learning English and such videos are very useful for me.
I have Sony 405 too. Very good camera
Luv your vibe Markus & great video-Thanks!
Great job Markus.
This is some of the best information you have given.
Love that Panasonic. Great show Markus !
Looks like Baby Beach on Maui across from the Island of Lanai! Loving the zooooom on these camcorders! 😲
baby beach is a great location, but this was kaanapali
I like the mic input because the camcoder itself makes some kind of creaking sound, and built in mics pick it.
60x zoon and even 1500x digital zoom(!?) is amazing along with the image stabilization.
It's amazing how nowadays camcoders can take such clear vivid beautiful images just like Markus demonstrated. I just love them.
Love your videos. Peace from Germany 🇩🇪
Your videos are the best most informative. Thank you so much Sir, for sharing your wisdom.
Thanks for showing me this video Markuspix. I'm thinking about upgrading from my Sony CX240 camcorder to the Panasonic for my basketball videos. Just need a couple weeks to save up or hopefully I find a used one in good shape.
You are the no.1 defender of small cheap camcorders. I think I gotta try one out.
Thanks so much, Markus. Ive watched your other camcorder compare video multiple times and have purchased multiple of the cheaper options. Ive kept my eye out for a used CX405. I'll get one one of these days. Thanks so much for sharing your experience!
WOW! 👍 I would be happy to have any of these two. :)) Thank you for your video, Markus, you´re both amazing!
Love this video. That panasonic is incredible for the price. Love the intelligent zoom. The detail (that lens) is superb for the price.
981 or Canon G50 whats your thoughts?
The lens hood design in this HC-VX981 is better than the newer HC-VX1. You can use the lens hood irrespective of the lens filter in the VX981 whereas in the HC-VX1 the lens hood is tiny and it is screwed in like a filter. So if you have to have an ND filter on VX1 you cannot have the hood on, if you screw the hood on to the filter then it creates a vignetting from the lens hood.
Beautiful Barbie and Ken, I love you guys :D
Sorry I've been away. Got really sick, UA-cam unsubbed me for whatever reason blah blah blah. Just glad to be back!
Great video as always, hope the holiday vacation was as wonderful as it looked.
Take care! ❤️
