- Photography is my love. Cameras capture beautiful images and video for our memories and imagination. Beyond that, it's all relative to personal taste. Many people think it's important to have 4k 60p 10 bit 422 RAW log LUTs with high dynamic range and global shutter. I couldn't care less about global shutter or 10 bit 4:2:2. I do not work for NASA. I am not making Hollywood movies (although I did), but right now I am just making UA-cam videos and I laugh at other UA-camrs obsessing over frame and bit rates like it's going to make their content more popular. Many people are missing the entire point of what makes images and video interesting. It's not 4K 60p 10 bit 422 global shutter RAW LOG with LUTs and dynamic range. No. It's something MUCH more important than that. This is something every filmmaker needs to learn if they really want to be more popular.

Don’t stop Markus. We don’t have enough artists out there dropping gold on us.
True
I loved his statement on “give an artist any camera !”
So true
Agreed. I love the out-of-the-box thinking on this channel. Makes me consider what being a "content creator" really is about.
So true, and why an old scratchy black and white movie can still make you cry or lift you spirits to the sky.
Yep. Markus is the best. Genius. True artist and free thinker. And his health advice is priceless.
Totally agree. Keep it going Markus. You're too talented to not be passing on your knowledge onto others
Don't listen to the trolls Markus. Most people that watch your channel deeply appreciate the fact that you keep taking the time to share your experience and wisdom.
Thank you
Some, if not most of which are paid trolls to try and destroy the ones that are making a difference for the good of humanity. These trolls set up different usernames and make it appear they are different entities arguing with each other over and over again. Yes, they are paid private/government contractors funded by the Elite.
Sounds like he understands the importance of a viewfinder. I don't imagine that has anything to do with the camera having specs like 4K 60p or 10-bit color subsampling.
@@Sczw I missed the 10 bit reference....
@@The_Butchers_Son I'd go with a video produced by Markus and even shot on super 8 if I had the choice between him and 'all the gear no idea' production companies
And yet he listened to the trolls and deleted a honest and GOOD video (mainly to avoid more crybabies "critics")
I think he better end his channel if he really takes down a video just because DJI fanboys "hated" on it...
At least 80 Percent of people don't wanna learn the basics. You're doing what you're doing for the rest of us. So thank you.
Markus knows his stuff. The 10-bit video (or 14-bit photo) simply gives someone the opportunity to make changes they were too lazy to implement before recording. Just get it right the first time.
@@333_studios yeah exactly. But I would go a little further than just saying it is laziness sometimes a lot of run and gun filming we don't always have the luxury to set up each shot perfectly. You just gotta work with what you have. Be the artist
Noooo - don't quit! I just subscribed and am learning a ton! Keep being a passionate advocate!
I think this is one of the reasons a lot of us like your channel so much. You cut through the crap and explain how art can be made without all the extra stuff. Very cool.
Oh yeah, Marcus has saved me a lifetime of misery! Everytime he's giving away something I wonder: ok, it's an evective way to get rid of stuff which is not being used, but does he know how much money he saves us buy helping us figure it all out.... I know coments get to people... I wonder how to make him see the rest of us...
@@zdzislawaprzyborska5653 the whinging twits will always make more noise than the large crowd that has gathered to sit and learn.
Please don't quit. I love this channel. It's epic. I learned so much about film and special effects. I bought your movie on DVD, and it's epic. Believe me, there are a lot of us out here who appreciate your art.
One of the all time great rants on art, life and creativity. The culture we’re living in needs it! Thanks Markus!
Markus, I am sure I can speak for so many of us... YOU have made a difference for our health and in our life by being such a positive and generous human being. Your legacy speaks by itself. You've accomplished so much and you are still helping us here with your tips and ways by showing us how you create. Don't listen and read any negative comment. Let them be. YOU deserves and you have well earned not to give a f... about them anymore. I thank you from all my ❤ for what you have given me and for the inspiration of living. You are way up there with my loving parents for the amount of good you brought me. THANK YOU !!!
I'm glad this channel exists, Markus. Any time I'm in a creative rut, these kinds of passionate videos really get me pumped and inspire me to get back in the saddle. All the best!
I love that fact you watch Markus' videos. You'd make a great team.
Straight-up, the most decent, down to earth, big hearted, visual artist on this platform. Don’t go changing or stopping bruv, we love ya fella!
Totally appreciate you Markus. Your philosophy on pic/video/equipment is the same as my own. Keep up the good work!
i watched all 11 minutes and this hit my soul, you've really provided value in your channel and don't want to see it go! thanks for the wisdom, it def helped me realize more.
I was a creator with my wife for 9 years. And for the last year dropped everything and moved to a desk job unrelated to media at all. You are the only channel I still watch. For the entertainment, value, lessons, positivity, honest reviews, awesome comparisons. Don’t level the bar by their standards, you are insanely higher.
I don’t write UA-cam comments ever, but please don’t stop this channel. No one is saying what your saying with such passion! Your absolutely right and this is what people need to hear. Love the channel, keep up the great work!
As ever, you inspire. If we say a video with no indication of who made it, and with neither you are Cara in it, I think we'd know it was lit and shot by you, and we'd know that you used the best budget friendly gear to do a job at a level I've never seen anyone here or on TV or in most movies be able to match. And forgetting the camera stuff, your continual example and reminders with Cara of a living a life that radiates joy is truly inspirational. And I'm a middle aged cynic by nature, or was. You've helped turn this ship around, I'll tell ya both of that for nothing !
You taught me that 4K doesn’t matter, I only shoot in 1080 and others I know only wanna do 4K. Thanks for always reinstating that fact. Cheers, keep going, you inspire people. I watched you before I started my channel. My most important asset is my voiceovers.
This is why I genuinely like this channel. It keeps things simple and stress-free, not focusing on expensive gear or technical specs. Actually showing realistic affordable gear (because not everyone can afford everything). Unlike videos focused on camera quality, perfectly staged setups, and excessive editing, which just feels off to me... I really enjoy this real side of videography and photography; grab the camera, take the picture / film the video, and just don't care about the minor details, just enjoy the moment. And this channel portrays this perfectly. Please don't ever end this channel because a lot of your subscribers are inspired not just for the photography side of things, but also to just be themselves and actually be creative with things.
Dont you dare stop this channel!! Its very rare seeing someone who has the ability to get whatever gear he wants and still give the most practical advice and outstanding workshops for free!! You are a true artist that needs to be heard!
You are so right about this. Content is often if not, always, more important then the quality. Many major budget movies proved this point many times.
Markus, Love your work, honesty, and simplicity. You are such a humble and great person. Please don't stop sharing your heart and experience. I love your videos.
Completely 100% agree with you. I’m a photographer and I shoot all my swimwear campaigns on a film camera to this day. And as a videographer, the camera I use for all the video work for clients is a Nikon Zfc. All my clients didn’t care about what camera I used, they only hired me because they love the previous work I’ve produced
Don’t delete this channel Markus, the world needs more artists than nerds.
After more than 46 years in production, I learn SO MUCH from you. I really am thankful for your channel. PLEASE keep doing exactly what you're doing. There are a lot of us out here who love what you do, and especially what you have to say. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the world.
oh my goodness! bro ive been binge watching your for only 3 DAYS!!! and I love your personality , easy explanations, the the heart you have for A-R-T! BRO!!!!this video is icing on the cake ! thats too rare these days ! please do not stop making content for us, us artists are eating your channel up! not just eating but tasting every morsel you feed us! thank you for your talent/art and time to do this for us ! really ! ❤
Hi Markus! After watching your video, I'm so blooming glad you didn't quit UA-cam! You inspired me today more than you'll ever know. You brought me back to my center of being an artist and a craftswoman rather than keeping up with the Joneses. 😊 This video of yours woke me up from all the noise out there about the technology rat race and expense. I heard you loud and clear, and for that . . . THANK YOU sincerely! You do and did make a difference. I'm self-taught and a bit of a Polymath, so you resonated with me. It's tough and discouraging sometimes when most of UA-cam is used for self-promotion to make a buck most times - I get it. I'm not where I want to be yet, but I'm getting there with inspiration from people like you. Getting to see your heart and learning from you today really made my day, so again . . . THANK YOU! It's okay to go the narrow path if we're all true to ourselves! Keep going the way you're going and let the rest roll off you like rain on duck feathers. I sure appreciate all your hard work in what you do and appreciate you so very very much! You're AMAZING!!! 🥰😉🙏
We have the same "problems' in the audio hobby. You've got music lovers who enjoy great music and you've got audiophiles who yearn for the best gear and never listen to music.
I think audio is a different beast. There are many that don't seem able to dissect audio in order to even understand the basics of sound reproduction whereas an audiophile by definition is obsessed with nuance and transparency. Both (and there are certainly other demographics) can spend an infinite amount of money on gear but the desired outcome is a personal preference just as it is with music itself.
This is 12 minutes of pure brilliance on the art of film and video. I hope you never end this channel! I also didn't know just how extensive your career has been. You have all the street cred to say what you said here and back it up. I'd bet over 95% of the UA-camrs and hopeful filmmakers out there would greatly benefit from this 12 minutes. I know this helped my view on the art of all this enormously.

Markus, thank you so much for everything you did and still doing on this channel 👍 I very appreciate all work you have been doing for all of us! Huge respect to you!
This is actually why I started following your channel. You use stuff that isn’t super high end and still producing content.
Thank you for doing what you’re doing and please continue doing it. We all appreciate your content and work!
“Screw the gear” is the best gear advice I’ve ever heard on YT. Glitzy features have turned filmmakers and photographers into braindead camera operators. All my equipment is old, technically limited and very inexpensive, yet I don’t feel my output is cheap in any way. Solid message Markus, you just gained a sub.
I recently watched the first 'Rocky' movie which was made way back in the '70s'. I was amazed at how much grain was in the low light footage, which could be considered very poor quality. Yet the story grabs you right at the start and the movie itself is one of the great classic movies of all time. It really looks like it was made with a cheap camera and one light!!! Big message in what you are saying. Thanks for this video. Very educational and informative.
perfect example!
Old Doctor Who - shot on videotape, in black and white, with cardboard shaky sets and rubber mask monsters - had better writing than the new version with all the CGI effects and overdramatic music. Fight me.
Look at the black and white image quality and low cost sets of the original Twilight Zone TV show from the 1960's. Excellent story telling... at some point you are drawn in and don't even realize that you are looking at an old 4:3 video over 60 years old.
I love that movie, all the first four. Their story and the characters. The cinematography is great.
And never I think about grain in those movies.
There is a difference between like 8mm film and 35mm film. But give good creative person to do the content and it doesn't matter.
I really need to go look rocky again to see where it has grain you talk about, as I wouldn't be able to say any scene top of my head where it is obvious.
Maybe because I love grain, as you can create additional visuals with it.
I am now considering buying the Star Trek The Next Generation in Bluray remastered. Where they scanned all the original episodes films and improved some of the effects.
I have the VHS collection, DVD collection and soon Bluray collection.
And oh boy do I love good acting and good lighting. One my favorites is 12 Angry Men... Basically whole movie is done in one room with 12 character.
Similarly, I just rewatched "Stray Dog" (1949) by Akira Kurosawa. Plot: rookie cop on a crowded bus has his pistol stolen. In a tracking shot where the cop pursues the thief, the camera is so shaky you'd think Mount Fuji was erupting during the shoot, and undoubtedly most UA-camrs would run to their safe space and pray their gimbals and IBIS never fail. After a few moments the hobbyist in me who is certainly not immune to the temptation of better specs realized that the instability of the shot did not detract in the slightest; it only heightened the manic dynamic energy of the shot.
Let us not forget: Sgt. Pepper was recorded on 4 track.
Markus, you have made a real difference to me. I’ve never had the money to buy the cameras I might have liked. Your enthusiasm for little cameras, your honest and very practical advice is really inspiring. And I have LEARNT a lot from your ‘how-to’ videos.
I love your camera-buying mania, even though I can’t indulge myself.
(Travel insurance on a camera lost or stolen enabled me to by a X100V before that became a cult. One big attraction for me was not facing any choice about lenses. I’ve since bought a cheap MFT and some manual lenses for the fun of experimentation.)
So refreshing, thank you for the energy and effort you put into your art for us to learn from and enjoy, we need people like you Markus, incredibly inspiring stuff.
Thank you for being one of the most genuine, earnest people on here. I'm glad you're still making videos. You totally nail it in this one.
I always wanted to make documentaries, so around three years back I started learning how to do it and man was I in for a shock. There is so much BS on YT when it comes to which camera and gear to buy. Forget hardware, you will be confused as shit if you search YT for which NLE to use for editing, you will find a million videos selling Premiere Pro and other million selling Davinci Resolve. Thanks to these UA-camrs obsessing about 10 bit 4:2:2, dynamic range, Log, RAW etc., I spent my hard earned money like crazy on the stuff I never ended up using. But then I found your channel, started watching you regularly and realized that all of that doesn't matter at all. What matters is that you got a story and passion to tell that story. You have been an immense influence in my life as an amateur documentary filmmaker and I would like to thank you for that Markus. Please don't listen to these UA-camrs, most of them have no idea what they are talking about. Please keep making these awesome innovative videos for people like me.
It is sad that people like Marcus is minority, almost like a unicorn in the industry.
Those who find similar via experience are silenced by those who jump to marketing wagon.
There were some who started about photography content, the style and history. But even they slipped to the latest and greatest tech very quickly, and started to talk about tools instead of methods.
That is what Marcus does to stand up above others, not giving up own skills and talents in sake of selling.
Like look at the new Sony A9 with global shutter. It is like world would have been remade by the reviewers opinions, that how radical change there is now coming.
Mainly how you can now change flash photography and get darkened backgrounds and use the widest apertures etc.
And what can be done, when the majority is tricked that only latest and most expensive technology will make it.
I find it insulting toward consumers where previous tech owners are underrated and cut off by those who should get the latest toys.
To be fair, the free version of davinci resolve is pretty great 😄
😂@@schmui
@@funfilm77 I mean I agree with the whole thing but come on. It's the 💩🤙
I discovered your channel just yesterday and your information has already greatly improved my understanding of the parts of photography I was lacking.
Markus is genuine AF!!!
Being a sound recordist & editor (in the UK) It's really nice to hear someone who's not in the sound dept talking about the importance of sound and the emotion it conveys. I loved the rant & keep up the good work of dispelling myths and BS that exist's on YT. If you are ever in the UK and need sound recorded I would happily work with you on a project!
Being a video amateur and having a few video mics, I can tell that the most important in the field or run and gun are dead cats/wind muffs. Also, whenever I have a choice, I prefer stereo vs mono for a better presence in the field, on the streets, on the beach, or in the forest. Also, I am surprised how huge, bulky, and inconvenient is a pro audio connector (except for studio, probably), truly a monster from the fifties or so. As for UA-camrs, it is crazy they want to be cinematographers and keep using 24 fps thinking it is ''cinematic''.
now I need a 4k 60p 4:2:2 microphone
I don't follow this channel for technical tips. I follow it for Markus. His voice, personality, perspective, lived experience, and sense of purpose. The pitfall of UA-cam as an ad revenue-driven search engine is that incentivizes (and exploits) answering just the 'how.' But it's the 'what', the 'for whom,' and above all, the 'why' that matters.
Thank You So Much Markus!! I want you to know how much I appreciate your channel. You can have all the tech in the world, but a photo/video without emotional content is nothing. Keep doing it the "Markus Way" .
Not sure how I came across you and Cara…. My wife and I live off grid and I teach fly fishing for a living. Y’all are wildly remarkable to watch and captivating. Thanks for capturing me for a few days! 💙🙌🏻
The ironic thing is that 24fps was chosen for movies because it was the slowest film speed that would still provide acceptable results. It was chosen as the preferred film speed solely because of cost and not because of image quality.
I just prefer smaller files cause my pc is old and it use to take me sometimes up to 24hrs to upload vids
@@BOOTsame
kinda still holds true.
Sorry to say, but that's not true at all. In fact 16 fps used to be the de facto framerate until sound came in, and back then, indeed 16 fps was used because it was the bare minimum necessary to see movement nicely. BTW, this is not something you can try today with a 60Hz screen, nothing to do with real projection at 16 fps, it will look way worse.
When sound syncronization came into play, there were multiple systems, but Vitaphone won and 24 fps was established as the standard from there onwards. It was not only based on cost, but based on highly technical limitations and the engineering solutions found at the time to solve those and project not only image, but sound at the same time.
@@alfonsodam If we start nerding: Well actually, the frame rate was often variable to save film, as it was easy to crank (or adjust electronically) at the right speed on playback. Audio wasn't a concern because it was presented live, which was typically just music.
DO NOT TAKE DOWN YOUR CHANNEL! You teach old-school methods which is invaluable even in today's all digital media. You remind me of my past mentors who taught me the art of lighting and storytelling. Having you on UA-cam is like having my past mentors at my fingertips. Keep up the great work, man!
I found your channel several days ago and have watched several videos on lighting. I found them very informative and I love your simple approach. Markus, I have been taking pictures for over 57 years. My Family started in the photographic Industry in 1946. My Father and Mother met at Pathe’ Color in NYC. You’re right, it’s not the camera. It’s the guy’s vision behind the camera that counts.
I love watching your videos. My newest camera is a Samsung NX30 that I brought 11 years ago.
KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK THAT YOU DO!
You are amazing! Everything that you are saying DEEPLY speaks to me. PLEASE keep it up, we need to hear this stuff!
I 'm so glad I found your channel, I'm really loving your content. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and yourself.
I feel this is partly my fault because I never stopped to leave a comment about how awesome and loved you are, Markus. I often quote your messages to others and mention stories about, for example, how you only had a few hours to produce a matte for Total Recall, and that message you gave us about "those who want to save you only want to save themselves". Whenever I start obsessing about technology and specs in a camera, I remember that you keep telling us it's not about the camera -- it's about passion, storytelling, composition and lighting. I recently downloaded your movie "To The Ends Of Time" and marvelled at what you achieved in such a short time and within the constraints a tiny budget.
You are an incredibly passionate person and a beautiful artist who inspires me. Never give up, Markus. There -- I've finally said it.
well said
Hi Markus, your words gave me a happiness you can't imagine. I always thought exactly what you said in your video. I am a professional photographer and I work in a big and famous French news agency. I started as a freelancer and then became a contract worker, and this made all the passion and efforts to realize myself as a photographer not in vain. Indeed just by suffering and having little money to work with you end up with uncompetitive equipment, but as you say and as I have always thought, things come from the heart and the head. It strikes me how even today in the agency other photographers are always discussing technological innovations, which camera is better than the others, optics, batteries, tripods, monopods, etc. etc.
I at 60 still use my old GX1 M4/3, and I am proud of it. I go on vacation with the last gift from my mother, a photography enthusiast, a few months before she died, (a very used Leica Q2 because it was too expensive for her) just to feel her close, still present. This is to say that passion, feelings and artistic vision, you have to find them in yourself, and that is what you will try to convey to people with images, it is absolutely not the medium you use that gives you the ability to get there. Thank you again for taking the time to sing your video to make young and old understand the reality of working with photographic and video images.
This channel has given me lots of ideas to travel lighter and just have fun with what's on hand. Really enjoy your demos with hard light. Thanks again!
Don't end this channel! And THANKS FOR DELIVERING THIS GREAT MESSAGE WITH SUCH ENERGY ABOUL A STORY WITH MEANING. This has meant a lot to me. Thank you.
I'm just a photo enthusiast that loves taking pictures. Every year I take our family Xmas card picture and this year because of your channel I invested in an AD100 and light stand and I can't even tell you how amazing our card came out this year. 100% because of what I learned here and more importantly what you taught me to just ignore. I truly hope you see how much your messages and teachings mean to your audience. Keep on keeping on Markus.. you rock. 🙏🏻
A real and down to earth person who isn't brainwashed by all the superficial crap that the media tries to feed us. Please continue this channel Markus you have no idea how much you have inspired me and my friends since we discovered your channel. I've been trying my best with what I can afford and you are the only person who has truly inspired me to never give up. Thank you Markus
Hey Markus, please don't stop sharing your wisdom and epic life stories, you definitely inspired me to keep it humble with the gear ! After watching your videos I got the cx405 and try to make the best of it with separate audio and lights , I'm happy about it, I only make videos to document my life for myself, family and friends in mind just like when I grew up in the 80/90's, I only upload it for convenience.
I still regularly have consumer fever and check out videos to upgrade my gear and splash out some cash but people like you bring me back to reason, I take deep breaths, calm down and instead try to master my equipment better and focus more on what I want to say and how to deliver it better, so thank you !
Love this, Markus, and all of your content, both creatively as well as daily life and health. The camera is just a tool and I appreciate how you break it down for folks. Keep up the great work!
Love your comments, Markus! For those of us who are artistically challenged, you're an inspiration encouraging us to focus on the art and not the tech. New tech gear is instantly gratifying but ultimately disappointing without good practice. Keep feeding us your ideas and best practices.
110% agree.
Literally every Award winning DP and Lighting Director would agree with Marcus.
I remember Roger Deakins in a lighting class say "what's the resolution (pixel count) of a Monet" ..yet they are stunning works if beauty.
He made the challenge that he could reproduce any lighting with one source light a white card and a black card.... and he did it.
Cinematography is an art form and the reality is not everyone will be good at it.
What a great message.... Mark. What you say is true and that's why we continue to follow your channel... Please keep going....
Your videos have really made me aware of how important audio is and even thought I'm just doing instructional videos for my customers I bring a good lavalier mic taped onto my shirt along with a recorder. I also setup a nice mic in my office for high quality voice overs. I've heard people say "but most people just listen on cell phones, what difference does it make" and even though I personally watch youtube on a huge home theater system even on a phone or tablet good audio without echo is key to holding attention. I hope you never stop making videos, they brighten my day and I truly do look forward to them. Love how you discuss things nobody else does, that makes this channel stand out. I know if you did gear reviews you'd get more views but again, thanks for not going that route and giving us something we can't find elsewhere.
You’re 100% right Markus. I totally agree with you because you spit the truth. Don’t pay any attention to the nerds who are obsessed with specs. Art is the only thing that is important. You’re a visual artist and all artists know it’s all about the light and the story. You communicate with your mind and your mind is precious. We who follow you on this channel love you and your work. Please keep sharing your knowledge and thoughts with us.
I'm not even a photographer, and this is one of my ABSOLUTE favorite channels.
You Markus are a true artist. I love art in all forms, so when I see a new video drop on one of your channels, everything stops. I need to watch it. :-)
One of these days, I will get a pocket camera. Right now I use my phone. LOL
I just made a couple videos this morning using the light I got from you. :-)
I think the most profound and important of all your videos that I've seen. Thanks Markus and please stick with it. You're videos are great to watch and we all learn a lot - especially with this one!
I just found this channel and Marcus you are AWESOME. You give such honest and practical advice. Don’t stop man!!

Markus, I came across your channel recently and after watching many other channels, I'm telling you, you are the only one I will ever watch from now on. I literally love everything about you, and your messages. I watched your video about your life with my jaw on the floor. Then I played it for my wife and her reaction was the same. What an amazing person you are, both inside and outside. Your talents and accomplishments are out of this world. The world is full of people who think the earth is flat and everybody else is stupid. I know how one silly comment can upset you, but those people just don't get it and are not worth wasting any time on.
Thank you for your authenticity, Markus. I've got a great project I'm working on and I was trying to "follow" a certain style for marketing the project visually that is being used over and over again in the world which isn't bad but it isn't me/my style of things. I wanted to catch the viewer with no video because of the emotion that is attached. Don't stop your channel because it is inspiring for people like me who feel some days to shut things down but then they come across someone who has a similar breaking-the-mold attitude and is a cheerleader for them/us who are the real game changers. I'm venturing out on my own to do my thing and some days it feels overwhelming and then you get that pinch in the side that says it's all worth it because someone out there is waiting for or needs your voice. I heard your voice today. Thanks, D
I'm glad I watched this video. Your observations are spot on. I have been a serious amateur photographer for a few years, and looking back on my best photos, I noticed that it didn't matter what gear I used. Once I learned about composition and lighting, I could make an interesting photograph with any camera. One picture that I'm particularly proud of was captured with an old LG smartphone, and nobody who has seen that photo would have guessed it was a phone shot. Thank you for making this passionate and inspiring video!
One of the best "rants" ever! Thank you, Markus. Stay as real as you are! Art is all about taking the tools you have and making beautiful things happen with them.
You are one of the few people not trying to sell us equipment but rather to inspire us to just tell good stories. I appreciate your channel immensely.
I think so too. Thank you for your videos. I found your channel accidentally today and I'm so glad that you show your works and thoughts!
Markus I discovered your channel buy accident one day. I do not regret it at all. I use Nikon my Dslr’s range from 6 megapixel Nikon D40 to a 24 megapixel D7200 .
Most of the time I use my little 6 megapixel.
I do not have the budget to have brand new gear.
Some of my best pictures are done with a camera that most people laugh at now days.
Photography got me walking getting healthy after my wife passed. Your message is very true about gear is very true. By the time you upload your 6 megabyte picture . Social media reduces the file to couple hundred kilobytes.
Keep up the great work . I hope to put a light set together that follows your travel kit.
David
Cheers Markus, it’s Sean in Atlanta! Good on you for calling out the prima donnas who, as an example, will buy a M4/3 camera and a tiny prime and still carry a gigantic backpack! I’m definitely with you on this!
I hope you are both well and please don’t quit! I am personally blown away by your incredible talent and past experience!
Have a smashing holiday and I hope you two get everything you asked Santa for! Haha!
Sean
Markus, your passion for your craft shines through in all your videos. Your art comes from deep within your soul. The fact that you are willing to share your heart, soul and knowledge with others who want to learn and listen is a gift. Folks need to learn to appreciate a mentor/teacher who wants to help others become better and to appreciate and use the tools they have at the moment. Bigger, better, newest does not make one the best at their craft. Heart and soul brings it all together. Please don’t leave UA-cam because of the naysayers. They are the ones lacking the heart and soul it takes to master their craft. ❤❤❤
I got into photography as a teenager 20 years ago and was obsessed whether my digital camera purchase was going to be future-proof enough for that kind of investment. I bought a 40D (for indoor sports) and a good lens, but lost interest because I couldn't really do anything creative with light, everything was big and heavy, and I just couldn't afford all the crazy setup I would see on blogs like Strobist. I eventually got rid of everything and picked up an X100s because of the leaf shutter when mirrorless became a thing, but phones have become so good that I never really used it regularly. I recently discovered that there are so many awesome little speedlights now that are so cheap and you don't even need crazy radio triggers anymore because everything's built in. So I found your channel because I was looking for a light stand to use now that wireless off camera flash is something that's finally accessible for someone like me. You are so right when you say that the camera is the last piece of the puzzle. Happy you decided to keep this channel going-- looking forward to going through more of your stuff. Thanks!
You've just explained my own personal passion for photography in a simple and straight forward video, thank you Markus!
I know I'm just 1 person, but hopefully this gets to you. I only started getting into photography/video 5-7 years ago. I did it because I'm now almost 60 years old and I wanted to start capturing my family's life. Not just taking 100 pictures a month on a cell phone and then never looking at that photos again. That can be overwhelming and no one has the patience to go back through to pick out the 2 photos that are really worth keeping. So, I started making making videos to post on youtube for just my family to see. They weren't good. So, I looked for help. Found your channel and instantly started making better quality videos based on your information. Then I thought I needed to get better equipment to go to the next level, but you talked me out of that by showing how to do better quality with equipment I already had around the house. I learned from you it is all about technique, not products. You saved me thousands of dollars that I don't have . My family loves what I do because it is from me and my heart. I think that is what your channel is about. Your love of the craft and your willingness to help others by sharing what you've spent your whole life doing. Please don't stop. My years old Canon M50 appreciate it. I've almost replaced it several times, but like you say, "It's not the camera, it's the content".
Thank you for your channel. Thank you for your knowledge. Thank you for your heart. And thank you for staying strong and not listening to the people that don't get it. There are plenty of people that love and respect what you provide for free. It's worth thousands, or more, to many of us that need it. Thanks again!
Markus, you're so above the trolls, and you're so generous, even take the time to teach us lessons based on trolling nerds who don't understand real art that transcends techie trends. As long as you keep sharing your great photos with the world and your super awesome lighting advice, you will always have our deepest appreciation--that's why we love you!
I've watched a bunch of your videos, but this heartfelt message is what made me subscribe.
I really appreciate your videos! I enjoy the honest information and message behind them! Alot of UA-cam is turning into commercially driven content vs your channel is more genuine like how UA-cam first started. I try to comb threw it all to find great content. Always a great feeling to find a channel like yours. Thanks again for the great content with a great message.
I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment, and my mentor has expressed similar sentiments. The pursuit of the latest and greatest gear is meaningless compared to the creation of genuine art and the articulation of a compelling message. Your expertise and insights are invaluable, and I sincerely appreciate your support by creating this channel to all us creatives out there aspiring to do something awesome.
Markus, please don't end this channel. Screw the 8bit vs 10bit crap. Hell, i've seen you do amazing stuff with half that LOL. PLEASE don't shut down the channel. 95% of the subscribers and even casual viewers aren't interested in all the technical top-of-the-line stuff. You have subscribers and viewers because you're REAL! PS, your hair looks terrific! (and I can tell its real) 😁👍👍Most of your followers get it! We really look forward to all your posts... PLEASE for the love of GOD, keep on keeping on!!! -Rich from Cali
You're an inspiration! Don't stop! Thank you for sharing your knowledge, it's super valuable
Just watched your Who am I video.....wow. I am inspired! Then I watched this one and wow again! Glad you did not end the channel!! You've inspired this 64 year old to quit thinking about doing some cool miniature photography and start working on it! Thanks markus. And to hell with the naysayers. They are just jealous because you did things they dreamed of but never took the initiative. I started making silly 8 mm silent clips with some friends in high school. But between then and now is a REAL LONG and roller coaster ride of a story. Now retired and back to film. Black and white for now...35mm and medium format and now have a darkroom in my bathroom. Have known the procedures for years, just never the opportunity to practice till now. If I felt comfortable in front of a camera I might do a "this is my story" you tube video, mainly for the grandkids....LOL Keep them videos coming, even if you only do one a month or so. You have a LOT to give and the world needs more of that than ever!!!
Your whole setup proves what you're saying and you can tell this came from the heart. It made tear up in the end actually. That's what matters, emotions are a part of us all and being able to capture that in a motion picture is the most important thing.
Absolutely love the message in this episode. I'm still learning to communicate in my videos. Being uncomfortable with being vocal, I've been using subtitles. Recently, my wife's cancer returned and took the wind if my sails. I have countless videos to edit and release but find it difficult to sit and edit trying to create positive content as I'm focused on taking care of my wife. Your message is inspiring. I hope one day my wife recovers and I can continue to release content. My last video I spent a wonderful time in Cancun. We returned only for the doctor to give us the bad news. Don't stop- you absolutely rock. You're one of the people who inspire me to explore the artist in me. God bless!
You really inspire us! Thank you, Markus!!
I LOVE your ending message. I could hear your voice cracking with every heart felt word you spoke. I feel sorry for those who don’t get it. Please keep this channel going. Thank you Markus!!!
Could not agree more. I am not a video creator. I lean towards stills and it is kind of relaxing for me mentally when I shoot. I was always taught if you take bad photos with the camera you have, when you buy a more expensive you will still take bad photos. All cameras have the basics and you need to learn the skill and when you learn it you will shoot great with all cameras, even film cameras. Thanks brother.
This is true. Back in the 70's I went to night school to learn the basics of photography. Purely manual film based cameras where you had to set the ASA (ISO today) aperture, shutter speed etc as well as the type of film you wanted to shoot with. I remember learning about composition, the rule of thirds, lighting was probably the most important consideration, then it was the quality of the glass you used. The camera was last on the list.
The creative part was up to you. Once you had knowledge of F stop effects, shutter speeds, and exposures generally, you could try developing your creative skill set.
The cool thing is, most of what you learn and discover can be passed over to moving image with just a few new things to learn.
The creative part is down to the user, though today's digital technology has made the camera far more flexible. You don't have to waste expensive film with mistakes. You can get things right with ease nowadays.
Understanding the basics of photography has ALWAYS helped me. Going to night school was money in the bank.
One of the reasons that I like watch your channel because you’re not biased and you’re not selling me anything. It’s really hard to find photography content on UA-cam that isn’t from gear shills.
Please don’t stop making videos just because of the gear snobs. A lot of us really appreciate your content.
I love your work and passion. I've learnt so much from this channel and I'm still catching up on all your tips and tricks. So much interesting content. Keep it coming while you have the passion. Peace
Thanks for being so candid and revealing. I'm glad somebody can cut through the bull!
I certainly hope that you do not end the channel. This past week I delivered a project that I knew would end up on UA-cam I rendered in in 720 and they thought it was great. You are spot on about sound and light being the most important . My experience in this area of art is similar to mine. Years of photography and now video and photography. What people do not consider what is the end user going to display it on. I shot 12 megapixel photos that ended up on billboards. I didn't need the 50 megapixel camera because it was not ending up in a museum.
Markus - first, please don't ever end this channel. Second, you are absolutely correct - on all points! Last, your approach to photography and film making is greatly appreciated by the silent majority. Form over function! Yes! - Bill
So refreshing to hear you say these things. Thank you so much. I look forward to more of your content.
Just stumbled upon you Markus, couple of days ago, glad I did. I TOTALLY agree... and TOTALLY needed to hear this... TODAY!! Hugzz from a film stills vet.
Really appreciate your channel Markus, you’re one of the few real pro working photographers on UA-cam who does something other than landscape photography, and you’re a great communicator.
Markus, you had been such a great help to me. We need more real people like you. Thank you so much.
You changed my life… well I changed it after seeing a video of yours. I love telling my friends and especially those I love about you and Cara. You represent what life can be and your sincerity is overwhelming. Thank you for all you do and share. You rock!!
LOVE your content!!!! Thanks for sharing so much gold with us!
