Designing the Droideka for Battlefront II w/ Dennis Brännvall

- An interview I did with Dennis Brännvall the Design Director for Star Wars Battlefront II during my trip to EA Play. In this video, Dennis goes over the process of implementing reinforcements into the game. Specifically touching on the development process of creating the droideka.
(Disclaimer: The Droideka 3D model clips are not DICE development videos and were recorded by extracting the model from the game & loading it into a 3D software.)
Big thanks to Dennis for providing his time and thanks to Battlefront Updates for letting me use his microphone.
Special thanks to EA for inviting me out to EA Play and providing me with the opportunity.

The Droideka is a work of art.
If DICE could animate a freaking rolling, robotic cockroach, they can do anything.
They had a strong starting point with the movies and old battlefront games.
they cant do grievous with 4 arms melee hits...
Not really a cockroach, but more of a pill bug since they both roll up into a ball.
Now if only we had new weapons and Star Cards
Except balancing
Love these Behind the Scenes videos! Keep it up dude!👏👏👍
Well, Dennis. You guys nailed it. My God, did you guys nail it. The Droideka has never been more authentically represented in a Star Wars game nor has it ever been more fun to play as than in BFII. Hats off to you and your team! Outstanding work! 💪
Oh, it’s beautiful
Those videos are sooooo cool dude, hope you do more like these in the futur, I mean WOW...
I think people often underestimate how much work goes into actually designing these things. The Droideka and Grievous are both very odd characters by how they move. DICE is actually quite awesome for listening to the community. Not many studios actually do that and I think the battlefront 2 community is quite lucky
I couldn't agree more. Can you imagine what a nightmare it must have been creating and animating Grievous' claw rush? I have a huge respect for what they were able to pull off with Grievous and the Droideka's unique design and movements.
@@thefox1901 I hope they keep supporting the game for a long time. I enjoy it quite a lot and after they move on I doubt they will be able to make a superior game because of all the time they put into this one. Its paying off and its made this game absolutely awesome
These interviews are great! They look really professional!
Videos like this make me wish I'd stayed in programming in college.
It's a lot of work, from various teams for each part.
I'm having a delimma. I'm going to college, however I've come in contact with the thought of investing in something that I possibly won't be into later. Therefore I waste my money. I would like to do concept art for games as a career. However, it takes a creative mind to do so. Now I do creative things sometimes in the past, however I mostly draw gameplay sequences of Battlefront 2. I take assets, combine them, and draw it out on paper. I'm sure I'll find what I'm looking for. I'm just nervous.

@@longclaw21212121 Well that's good. If you made it, then I guess I can too.
I love these types of videos
This is so good.
And this is why DICE the best studio from EA is!💥
Battlefield V
@@Sahtoovi what about it
@@professionalgamer6522 "best studio" Just look at Battlefield V, I wouldn't really call it an amazing game.
@@Sahtoovi What ? I never mentioned BFV I'm confused lol
@@professionalgamer6522 The original comment said that DICE is the best studio from EA. I said that he/she should look at Battlefield V, which is developed by DICE and it isn't even near the top in terms of best games from EA. In fact, I would place it near the bottom compared to all other big EA releases.
Then they created a masterpiece

I love developer commentaries #RespectTheDevs
Hopefully we get those clone commandos. And maybe magna guards too
WIZARD!
Another fantastic video, always love BTS
The Team at DICE: finish off this year strong, for this could potentially be the best star wars battlefront game yet to date.
Absolutely phantastic.... Please do more vids of this kind! #TogetherBrothers
They nailed making a rolling destructive robot.
I literally spent years as a child pretending to be a droideka. This game completed me.
I'd die for more BTS stuff like this, amazing!
Awesome. Great work.
I wanna see more of these videos. Would love to see a video like this about Grievous, Obi-Wan, Dooku and Anakin.
Hope you get to do more interviews as the game progresses. Super clean production/editing!
epic
❤️❤️❤️
Crazy work...
GJ devs !!!
This is great. Looks very official. I wish EA/DICE would put more effort into promoting the game with this kinda stuff, like they did pre-release.
And all this work, They are doing it for free, Rebember that, friends.
Where are those droidekas?
Nice work! Can’t wait for more content!
They forgot to let the Droideka roll backwards... and balance it as well. Several of them out at once are unstoppable.
That's some quality content !
Great job with the doideka but who else thinks it needs a small buff in their range damage?
it needs a transformation speed buff.
Very cool
I want more of these videos
Except the firing sounds are completely different from the movies.
The movies aren’t consistent. The gun sounds for the most part aren’t exclusive to 1 gun.
Yeah
What a coincidence I'm out here on the forums and reddit bugging, trying to convince the devs and community that their shields are supposed to be able to block lightsaber attacks, which they currently can't.
Nice video. Any others like this one in the pipeline?
They tried that in testing, and they were too overpowered with that.
@@scoutthetrooper I wonder how the shield functioned. It just doesn't feel like the Droideka the way it is now. It looks, moves, sounds, jumps like one. But the way it goes down in a couple of swings of a lightsaber, going through its shield while it has stopped to stand ground and not chase after or roll away from anyone, just breaks my heart.
DaiBenduMonk It's called game balance.. it already is immune to cc and ragdoll by force abilities
@@MisterK9739 what's cc? Oh and I would love to see them getting force pushed into a ball to roll a few meters backwards. That'd be cool as hell to see, knocking down some of their teammates who were standing behind them while they're at it, yes please bring it!
And if you're going about balance, where is it when you're a unit that is designed to be slow and sturdy in its attack/defensive position, unable to jump or dodge or quickly escape, equipped with blasters that are made for a close range exchange, with now way to protect yourself from attacks at a point blank range?
DaiBenduMonk So, you want to nerf them? Cause that would be a massive nerf...
Because it's a 1000 bp unit and shouldn't have the upper hand against a 4000 bp hero, that is ALSO designed to work in cqc?
😍
POLISHHHH
What is the name of the 3d software that you use in the video
It was a mix of Frosty Editor and Maya
@@CinematicCaptures thanks :)
If a game engine prevents you from doing something the core audience wants, you know ya done fucked up somewhere ahaha
Nice, but why are they so big? Too big they are look at movie material
Hello there
Plz plz plz make clone comando re enforcements
Droidekas need a transformation speed buff.
What if they made Battlefront in 2020 instead of making Battlefront in 2015 and 17 instead they held the game and kept adding content and fixing bugs. Just imagine if they did this we could've had EA Battlefront 1 with all era's and have way more weapons and maps along with gamemodes and more heroes&villains also more content with them, for example more emotes and skins. also less buggy grevious
Same logic can be given to warframe, GTA5, or any other game for that matter. Let's delay the game for several years until we do everything we want to add and run out of ideas, but also remember that the hype for the game died out.
And it only took them two years!
*changes thumbnail*
Yeah, had a few people tell me that the original thumbnail was a little flat and uninteresting.
Cinematic Captures this one is good!
But why don't they just get the mesh used in Episode 1? I mean they are after all cooperating with LUCASFILMS
Shame they’re not really worth the battle points
Dice pls
Droideka used to be important. Lol
They probably just copied the anims of the classic battlefront and improve them, and boom: Droideka done.
You do realize it not that simple right? There a lot of variable to make a acceptable animated model .
Just an example. in your logic it like saying just port an old generation game that wasn't meant for pc and "improve" ported into a pc/modern console. not a hater or anything im giving you the idea of the time and effect of seem like a "simple" task but in reality, a hassle or complex task.
I... don't think that's possible.
@@aaronka1285 porting models and animations? it's quite possible, especially if you own the rights
@@Battlefront2Remaster hopefully you did understand of what I said?
With the liar who said the game is in a good state , yea.
Elaborate
This game is so slow and inconsistet, full of stunns etc. Total trash.
Elaborate.
@@massineben7198 the movement is very clunky and ability animations take way too long.
@@massineben7198 guns, abilities etc are inconsistent.
