Thank you so much for your video. I have an 06 Magnum SRT8. This piece of crap pink plastic shift release lock broke at the most inopportune time. I had the vehicle towed to the dealer. Service rep said 300 to 500 dollars with an up front 140 dollar diagnostic fee and 3 days to fix! No service tech would talk to me. Luckily the Tow truck driver had some experience with the same issue in the past. Showed me a quick fix to get up and running. I fixed it myself in about an hour and a 40 dollar part from Advance Auto (Metal)! Only differences from your video were my shift knob screws on. Also, mine has a lid on the drink holder. I had to loosen the console by removing the three bolts inside the bin and the two screws by the ashtray. Thank God for people like you to help us folks! Have a Great Day!

Incredible video. Just did this today. The biggest tip I can suggest is when putting the entire shift mechanism back together...make sure the shift lever is NOT still in park. Bring it down into drive, snap everything back together, and then slide the shifter back up into park. If you keep in in park when putting back together, the mechanism will not work properly and that's why your keys will not come out and the fix still won't work. Hope that helps those who are oh so close to finishing!

YOU are a lifesaver. I had to replace the transmission shifter lever (pink thingy) in a 2005 300C. Was able to complete the task without taking off the ashtray, but did have to remove 3 screws on bottom of console and tilt it up as the cross-member blocked the rear of the shifter box. This 300C shifter knob was a screw off, for those of you whom will experience this problem in said vehicle. I purchased the new lever at the local Chrysler dealership for $11.00.Thank you very much, well done sir!

Excellent! After watching this video, I threw out some of the complicated steps in other 'fixes' I had seen for this problem, and had it done in no time. The only modification I had to make to the steps was that I was having a problem getting the shifter out of the console until I removed the center console screws and shifted the center console backwards about an inch or so. Then the shifter came right out and went back in easily! I replaced the 'pink thingy' with a metal replacement part so hopefully it won't be a problem in the future. At least until the next piece of cheap plastic breaks! Thanks a ton Jeff!

You are a automotive GOD. You saved me over 500 dollars. Dodge wanted to replace the shifter. I bought a metal piece to replace the pink POS plastic one. I was concerned that this repair was a bit over my head but with your instruction It took me 2 HR total. I suggest watching the billet tech vid to see the installation of the new piece to all you that are going to try this. You may have an issue getting the key out when finished that's because the lock out cable has to be adjusted. THANK YOU!

just used your video to fix my 06 charger. I appreciate the brevity and how you got to the point, real easy to follow. I would add that the 06 charger shifter is twist off and you have to ensure that the shift interchange lever is on the left of the metal rod that is the gear shifter. That's really important.

Excellent video; I used it on my '05 Magnum R/T. The only thing that I would suggest is to let everyone know that not all the shift handles are press fit. My shift knob is actually threaded on. I struggled with it until just on a whim I tried screwing it off - it worked! Otherwise, a very helpful and concise presentation. Thanks.

Jeff Williams this video helped my 2007 Dodge Magnum SRT8 got stuck in park and I towed it home bought the part from the Dodge Dealership for $11.60. I watched your video and fixed it myself. A couple things were different like the shifter un-screwed which was previously mentioned and my center consul needed to be pulled back because the shift box wouldn't slide out. I just pulled the center consul back with 2 screws on the top of the consul by the ashtray and 3 bolts in center consul. ThankU

Hey, just wanted to say thank you! I used your guide to get my shift lock replaced on my 05' Magnum R/T. The only difference was that you needed to remove two phillips screws at the front and remove the 3 8mm screws that are underneath the false bottom in the center console. I got humpty dumpty back together again and now I can drive my car. Thanks for saving me a ton of money!

Just fixed mine today using this video. Start to finish, little over an hour. I got a 2005 Dodge Magnum SXT. Few additional things. Shifter bottom pops off as shown, but it screws off. To the left of the shifter was some type of molding clip that had to be pryed out. The two rear 10mm nuts, you will need a deep socket piece. I opted to replace the interlock with the Doorman metal version, which is on Amazon for around $15. Get white lithium grease for that part and to lubricate parts while you have access. Found an additional video showing the interlock replacement, it made a point to make sure you put that part back in, with the shifter catching on it's left. Back up and running, so thx for this video, made it very easy to do.

Just fixed my gf 300. But the shifter interlock I bought was not plastic metal I guess. It's a simple fix and this video is VERY HELPFUL. Just make sure before bolting down shifter that it moves as should. Appreciate the video and way more helpful than the other videos !

I just did this to my '06 Charger R/T - thanks to great vids like this one!
I only want to add a word of advice to people that have a lid on the cup holders. You'll have to slide the entire center console back a few inches, otherwise you won't be able to pull the shifter up and out - the lid mechanism is in the way. It's nothing hard - it's held by 5 screws - 3 on the bottom of the armrest storage (under the rubber mat) and two at the front.

ok everyone. I used this video for an 05 Magnum. My shifter Knob screws off, no need to pry. Seondly, there is a carpet fastener attached to the shifter that needs to be released. And i found it helpful when putting back together, to put the cable back in before placing the shift unit back in place. Also, if you replace the Shiftlock latch with Dorman parts... there is a video on UA-cam that shows you how do to that as well! good luck!
    And thanks Jeff!

You're a god damn hero, you solved a problem I didn't even know I had yet. Bought a used Charger back in December, recently noticed that shifting out of park takes a couple tries and a wiggle of the shifter, but didn't think much of it. Now I see that it may be the symptom of a real problem (or at least a real annoyance!) and can go ahead and look into fixing it before it became a real pain in the ass. Greatly appreciated it.

Jeff! thank you so much for putting this information on line. Your confidence in what you do encouraged me to take this project on. I found a replacement part through my local auto parts and had it next day. 2005 Dodge Magnum $28.00...probably could have gotten it cheaper on line but like to help out the home folks. Aluminum billet w/spring Dorman part #924.706. Works like a charm and I guarantee you it wont break at the spring. Your video was spot on. I did have to make a few minor adjustments with the console, other than that it was perfect. But I do need to get a better "trouble light".
    I thank you sir,

Thanks Jeff, your video helped and I was successful at replacing the latch. The only thing I would like to mention is for owners of 06 Chargers with the rear air conditioner vents, you will have to take out the center console. It was very easy to do, just 5 screws. If you don't, you will not have enough clearance to pull the shift box out.

This was actually just as easy as it looks. I did this with a friend in less than an hour on my 2005 Magnum SXT AWD. I used a billet aluminum replacement I found on UPR for $20.
The only thing we had some trouble with was the shift nob is actually a screw-off. Also there was a trim plug that plugged into the box, and an additional wire when pulling the top cover off of the box.

Great vid. Just did this to my 300C today. If I may add. Everything is the same up until you have to pull out the shift assembly. On the left side there is a carpet tab that attaches also. And my harness was not long enough so the center console was taken out and it came out with ease. And when you separate the 4 prongs on the last piece, there is one last wire harness that attaches to both halves.

Great video, was able to get it fixed relatively quickly. I haven't done this before so your video was a life saver. :) I just changed out the pink part entirely with an aluminum replacement purchased at O'Reilly Auto Parts for $35 instead of trying to jury rig it.
My only suggestion would be to take the console out after removing the ash tray. With the console there it made getting the shifter out a much more difficult process than it needed to be and much more difficult than you made it look! When I went to put the shifter back in I decided to pull back the console (three bolts, two screws) and it all went back in smoothly. You don't even have to unhook the outlet in the console, just hold it back with your elbow and you'll have all the room you need to tighten the shifter down and make sure everything is hooked back up right.
Thank you Jeff for helping me fix my car without having to spend a ton of money!!

+Kevin Henderson As does the 2006 Chrysler 300. Also, there are a couple of more wires to disconnect and had to loosen up the whole console assembly to get the shifter assembly loose.
Got the part on Amazon for 24 bucks, but it "could" have been repaired by drilling a small hole in the body of that pink part and used it to secure a locally purchased spring. But, will feel more secure with the original part and spring, which is cast metal vs the plastic, at least from Amazon.

Fantastic video! I just replaced my pink thing with a billet aluminum piece as a preventive measure. I hear they will all break and I figured I would fix mine on my own terms.

Thank you so much for this video. I just replaced mine with one made out of metal from Billet technology for 30 bucks in my 2006 Charger. The defective pink part is called Park Lock Out Mechanism. Thanks again!

This worked on my 2006 Chrsyler 300 as well. Only differences were that my shifter knob screws off instead of pops-off. and the once I had the shift loose and ready to be removed it didn't have enough room to come out. I had to remove a couple screws inside the storage area of the console. That allowed me to lift the console and remove the shifter.

which screws, Charles? I'm having same problem.

    • @charlessmalley5430
      @charlessmalley5430 10 років тому

there's a false bottom in the storage area of the console. Take everything out of the storage and the bottom just lifts out, then you will see the screws.

Thank you Jeff for the Step-By-Step removal of the Shifter Assembly, it was helpful for the disassembly. However, you did forget to discuss the Aluminum REPLACEMENT part to buy and swap out for that Pink Plastic garbage from Dodge. Thank you for this video!! The dealership wanted to charge me $250 to fix and said my entire shift assembly may need to be replaced and that would cost me $500. Would have been nice if every detail was showed (instead of applied) but this video inspired me to do the repair myself. I ended up getting the replacement part from the dealership ($10) which looks a little more sturdy than the original and it's now white. I will probably replace with the billet metal one eventually. I just couldn't wait for shipment and needed the part immediately so I could drive my car.

Jeff great video, we have a pacifica 2006 with the same issue, replaced the part, we are having two issues, with the white detent cable and the key. If we connect the white cable to the interlock the car will not shift from park. If we remove, we can drive the car with no issues, shifts to all gears. The other issue we can't remove the key, I assume they are related. Please help!

Dear Jeff, my mother has garaged 2007 chrysler 300c w/ 5.7 litre, 40,000 miles and a stock sunroof (I wish they made them in convertible like the lincoln continental convertible, I am reasonable and understand maybe the suicide doors are hazardous but, they can still make a large convertible. Anyway, my dear sweet sainted mother was broken down at CVS drug store and W/ your information I was able to get her up and running in a half hour !!!! So I would like to thank you for spending the time as it made my families' lives much easier and definitely made my elderly parents sleep easier and me too as the whole tow ripoff and then chryslers dealership theft wouldn't have been nuttin f--------- nice. God bless my friend / James :)

Really wish you said we needed sometlthing to replace the spring in the "what you need" portion of the video. Also what do you do if the gear shifter block wont come out? Mine feels like it is stuck on something (not the bolts) under the cup holder area....

This happened on my daughters 2006 Charger....I used an eye screw to replace the broken tab. You will need a tiny drill bit and drill a tiny hole...then screw in a small eye screw and fix is complete.

  • @Teds455

Thank you for posting, although I would have benifited from removing the consol... very difficult to remove the shifter on an 06 RT...
Also, didn't have a replacement interlock latch... drilled a tiny hole in mine and put a small screw in to hold the spring. The problem... after putting the car in park I couldn't turn the key far enough to remove. I had to manually pull on the cable to turn the ignition far enough to remove the key. There must be too much tension on the spring. Anyway new part ordered.
