COMPLETION Of Box Beam Assembly! | Couple Builds STRAW BALE Home In The Desert
Вставка

- In this video, we finish assembling the box beam on top of the straw bale walls. This consists of a 2x4 (on edge) ladder-like structure with plywood on the bottom. I try to do as much of this process as I can on the ground, but the majority has to be done in place on top of the walls because of the positioning of all the pieces.
Next, we need to attach our strapping material over the top and crank it down to land on top of the window and door bucks. This will be followed by adding a short pony wall on top of the box beam on the south wall to create the "high side" of the building. Then the trusses can be installed!
Stay tuned!

Looking good. We are getting some nice rain today. A chilly 45 degrees.
Got just a little here. Hoping for another beautiful window to work now! 🤞
Glorious site and sunset! Lucky enough to do a SB workshop with Athena and Bill last Feb at Worm Farm. Preparing for my own SB build this summer. How long is your longest top plate? Since my build is substantially larger than the tiny house we erected in PHX (~800SF), Bill suggested making the top plate outer box arms interlocking for greater stability and oneness. Will watch the rest of your videos to see your fabulous finished product.
Great to hear, Kathryn! Good luck on your build. Our top plate (or box beam) is built in sections to span the perimeter, which is about 32' by 26'. We're just under 800 SF, interior. The plywood on the box beam sections is offset to span across box sections and to interlock at the corners. Thanks for watching, and let us know if you have any questions. We loved learning from Bill and Athena, but have chosen to do several things differently based on a bunch of factors, so we're still learning as we go and making some decisions on the fly. Hope it all works out! 🤞
It is really firming up.
Definitely! Thanks, Michael.
Tuned in!! 🌻
Thanks, Shalisa!
Yeaaaaa!❤️😊
😘
I can’t quite figure out how you figure out how much space you need to give above window and door frames to allow for compression... any advice?
A test with your actual bales is the best way, but what this process taught me is that even that is not 100% correct. The reality is that the best you can do is just estimate as close as you can, and then be able to make adjustments where necessary. For me it was anywhere from 1/2" to 1" compression per bale, but they won't all be the same, so you'll have to make a few adjustments. Not a fun process, but it's the only way I can think of to really get it right. Good luck!
@@MidlifePrices great, thanks so much!
