THIS Is How We're Protecting Our Straw Bale Walls Until We Plaster

- In today's video, we're showing our process for trying to protect our straw bale walls from the weather for a few months until we're ready to plaster. The idea is to create a barrier with 6 mil plastic sheeting, but to set it away from the bales a bit to hopefully prevent any possible condensation from soaking into the bales. To get this standoff, we used 2x4s ripped in half to wrap the plastic around at the edge of each section to create the space. This also makes a much stronger connection for the plastic, as opposed to attaching it directly to the bucks, where it could likely rip around any fastener and be ripped away from the wood. The wrapping around the 2x4 is much less likely to tear. But, this is really just something we came up with as a potential solution, so… FINGERS CROSSED! Hope it works.

Cause Wendy has stormy eyes.
I did not get the "made me a man" reference but I looked it up. March winds? It never stops blowing out here LOL. Looks great guys
Thanks, Warren! Yeah, we agree that it's windy just about all the time.
Great show guys! Subtle? 🤣😂🤣😱😆. Really great seeing you protect the straw bales. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, y'all! She's a hoot, isn't she? 🤣
@@MidlifePrices she's so wrapped up in trying to get usable footage ... Nice job on the wrapping. Where did you get your straw bale construction knowledge? Tucson was the birthplace of getting straw bale construction into some building codes. Thanks!
Thanks, y'all. Got most of our hands-on knowledge from Bill & Athena Steen, who are pretty well-known in the straw bale, and a few other, communities. It's also helpful that they're located, and have a lot of experience, in Arizona. We took a class with them, and have even had them out to our property. We're slightly modifying a few of their techniques, but maintaining most of the spirit of what they taught us. The rest is from books and UA-cam, but it seems like there's always some little uniqueness that you just can't find an answer for out there, so we've also just brainstormed a bunch with smart friends! Hopefully, it all comes together for a nice, strong, safe final product! 🤞
Jan gave the dinner party from hell LoL
Everything looks great!
👍
it was just fine on the audio thanks for the update i hope it last and lets you guys to move to the next phase on your project. stay safe and have a great day
Thanks, RG. Hope it holds up, too! 🤞
I didnt find the wind that distracting at all. Great repurpose of the 2x4s by ripping them in 1/2 for the frame of your plastic covering panels. Lots of work but looks like an excellent alternative to the big ol plastic Jack in the Box tarps.
Yeah, needed something a little longer term. A little bit of work, but the alternative of wet bales could be very bad! Thanks, Don.
Hai Brain, it's looks very good. Good idea. You are a very smart man. Greetings from Ron from the Netherlands.
Thanks, Ron. Can't take total credit for everything, but I'm hoping this is a solid solution, too! I'm constantly getting input from others and trying to find the best solutions I can. So far, so good. Thanks for watching!
Very subtle indeed.
She doesn't like to beat it to death 😉🙄
Your best opener ever ! Quality of your videos keeps getting better and better. Can wait to see you put the lid on it.
Thanks, David. We like to think they're pretty good, but still pretty low view numbers. Oh well. We don't do it to get huge, but not sure how to get them to a bigger audience. Thanks so much for watching and participating!
@@MidlifePrices I think if you can do some "how to" overview videos (kind of collapsing 3 months into one video) numbers might go up? There are no basic stawbale videos that arent work-shoppy out there. Youre the real deal.
@@et5222 Might be a good time for something like that. Could show from foundation to roof now. Lots of other details still to go, but this is the main structural elements all done. Thanks for the input.
@@MidlifePrices I know that would be a lot of work, but many of the million+ viewed off-grid videos are "review" and timelapse type things. I like your idea of a "Part 1 - Building the Structure"
I think I'd like to give that a try after the metal roofing is done. Could have a nice timelapse of the foundation through the roof. Thanks for the suggestion!
Beautiful structure!! Its up!! Woohoo!
Thanks so much!
@@MidlifePrices I got mine up too!🙂
@@northeastslingshot1664 Awesome! Congrats!
i thumbs up in support of your channel
👌
Haha sounds like me filming lol.
🤣🤣🤣
It’s windy lol.
The funniest part is that it wasn't even that bad! 🤣
Hi Pam & Bryan A little concerned about your neighbours Bill & Yvonne, they haven't posted a video in two months. I believe Bill has some health issues and may need surgery just looking to hear they are OK.
They are ok. I saw on Instagram they were putting their shower in. But he did have a recent surgery.
Not sure, but I think he may just need some recovery time.
Now im no meteorologist, but i think you may be having an issue with wind noise affecting your audio. May want to consider doing a voice over?? 🤣😂🤣😂
How can you not love her! 🤣🙄
