My wife requested I build this bookcase/storage cabinet for our home. I modeled this after an original mid century modern Paul McCoy piece, but not all is as it seems.

Use paint that's invisible unless you use black light then you can have your skulls in flames and everything else and it would look badass
🤘
Fantastic build JL! Crushed it and your wife was right… I’m the most handsome Jonny 😂 Love you brother l! Thanks for the shoutout and I’m glad you loved it.
Thank you for the shoutout, Jonny! Amazing builds as always!
Thank you brother 🙏
"I want that one" doesn't leave room for any other thing. When those words are heard, you got to do whatever she wants in her house and be happy about it 🤣
The wife was right.
Rule 1: The wife is always right.
Rule 2: When the wife is wrong, rule 1 applies.
Four eyes levels of drama in that title
Cool never been first to comment and like on this channel
Wife was right (like normal)
I don’t necessarily think the use of Shaper and CNC is what bothers most UA-cam watchers. I’m sure it’s that the content makers have to mention it every time… at least a couple times per video.
Like a, “Look, I know some of you hate this but deal with it. I have one.” Every time it’s used. Just use it. No, “Look what I’m using” announcement is necessary.
Although, those screaming about it is interaction, algorithm, etc… so, I get it… stoke that.
30:05 as a 16 year old myself without a wife and using my mom's account on youtube, I can definitely say that I am big fan of your work and like your videos, saying "u were wrong and wife was right" was an easy choice.
Good Day 🌅, nice job, I have some books somewhere that has a bookcase very similar, I can’t remember if it was Japan’s or China’s,
Great design though, well worth the effort, From France,
Wife was right-but then again, you spiced it up with those kickin doors (right choice to redo), the handmade pulls, the black finish, and the new tools! My grandfather and great grandfather worked through the 20th century making furniture by hand, and would have never turned their noses up at a tool to help you get the job done with less time and greater accuracy. Only advice I have is to sneak one flame or skull, even on the back to capture your vibe! Yanni? 😅🎉😂
Wife was right like always 😂 I love everything you do and don't change for haters keep doing what you are doing. Much Love from England 🤘
It's only a Paul McCobb piece if it comes from the Paul McCobb region of France
Wife was right.
Now her percentage of being right has changed from 1.12% to 1.39% of the times
Wife: keep it simple🙄
Johnny: I like to challenge myself 😤
5weeks later
Johnny: wife was right shoulda kept it simple 🤧
Well, the wife is always right, even if she's not!
Stunning piece, Jonny! Amazing work!!! 😃
And your wife was right, but it's too expensive for you to send me anything down here to Brazil. 😬
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
This piece is beautiful
Anyone who eats a lot of Chinese Food can easily recognize the designs as being a Round Shaped or Circular Chinese Curio Display Cabinet Shelf.
Wife was right.
And I appreciate your narration style.. you have this combination of stress relieving tone and... SQUIRREL!
What was I saying?
Greatly appreciated.
wife was right
...
remember this 2 rules, that saves mariages:
(1) wife is always right
(2) i wife is wrong, look up rule (1)
Wife was right. I hate it...but they usually are. Until they aren't and you get a new wife...then she will always be right. So, wife was right.
The original Burl and epoxy slab is GORGEOUS! But, after seeing your second attempt, I agree.....not the right vibe for this project. HOWEVER, I don't think that small serving boards are the way to go. The pieces would never be large enough for someone to truly appreciate the contrast of the wood and epoxy. I would suggest maybe using it as the top for a small server or a pair of night stands that has the body of the piece made of a lighter wood and minimal finish so the top can POP.
Just my 2 cents. I really love this channel and I look forward to your next project!! Also, TRUST THE PROCESS!! Also, Also, THE WIFE WAS RIGHT!
The "Wife is Always Right"!
In the words of the Immortal Mick Jager: "Paint it Black!"
Love the ramblings! That's why I keep coming back!
"We should go for 4."
"But I'm good with 3 right now."
Wife was right
Great Project… of course THE WIFE WAS RIGHT, when in doubt you just need to ask her. At least she gave you a pass on the black. I love that you use ALL THE TOOLS in your toolbox to woodwork. The project has a feel of a lot of the pieces I’ve seen in Hawaii and Japan. It looks like a take on a split moon shelf. Whoever is credited with the design I feel that you have put your spin on it. I really love the second version of the doors, great choice. Thanks for sharing and have a great day!
that’s a really cool looking piece for your house but just so you know…your WIFE WAS RIGHT as always
Your Wife must know my Wife because my Wife was right too. Great step-by-step ish videos, thanks.
"I'm building this for my wife so she can't get upset about that."
You HAVE played this game before, right? Because it sounds like you haven't.
Wife was right? :P
I use my laser for so may things that could be done by hand and SO WHAT??? They don't like it, just shut up and don't like it...
The people who don't like you use the CnC should go watch other builders... Black Tail studio do many wood projects without CnC, go there! (yeah I choose your friend just to be safe XD )
Wife was right
An absolutely gorgeous build, like always. I've only just recently found your channel and it's great to see another fellow Star Wars nerd building amazing art. I'm currently working in trim carpentry, but my end goal is furniture making and watching you really inspires me. My wife and I are currently searching for a bigger home with space for a shop of my own to pursue that dream.
Wife was wrong 😂 You're a good dude ol johnny boy,but the wife is correct, OK SOMETIME 😅😅😅
Wife was right. Most of the time, they are because Happy Wife, Happy Life.
I was listening for you to say "Trust the process." Without thinking about it, I found myself saying that to 3rd graders while teaching math. I usually say "don't skip steps" but "Trust the Process" means the same thing.
Your wife was right! But so were you! Watching from South Africa, wear and XL. Love your channel!
The wife was definitely right
Nicely done great
WOOD WORK
Don’t feel guilty about your amazing knowledge it’s inspiring and fun to watch.
"Wife was right" Happiness many times is remembering to say "yes dear". Turned Out GREAT! Did that one you modeled it after sell for 11k?
Your wife was right. Most interesting comment.
Jonny, even Nick Sawyer uses a Shaper, Panto-router, and has an obsession with hand tools. Still.wood, still work.
Wife was right! You're awesome & your work blows my mind. 🤯 So creative 🤩
Wife was right! / I´m not a wood worker but I´d love to, I´ve done a thing or two but nothing crazy, in the mean time while I decide to become a wood worker watching other people do it and specially learning from their mistakes helps you plan ahead for your own projects, love the channel and keep up the hard work!
Bro that build is far from lame. Came out sick! You’re definitely the Bruce Springsteen of woodworking!! 😂
Ok…so once again, my comment relates to wives…and yes, Your Wife was Right! And if you don’t believe me…just ask my wife…she’ll tell you “that goes without saying!”.
Beautiful piece, and I absolutely LOVE the look of the doors with the black shelving! When first seeing the doors, my immediate thought was of a sunset in the desert…just beautiful! Looking forward to your next build, as always.
Wife was right, but you were, too. One can only imagine what will be a collector furniture piece in 60 years. Perhaps a J.B. Tambor 33 cabinet.
You make amazing items. The ramblings are great. Wife was right but so were you. Also, you do you a person loves what you do you’ll never make people happy. Great job.
Hi,
Wife is right. One idea: why not use blue tape to mask around your glue joints? Saves a lot of cleanup. Admittedly with black stain it’s less important, but it avoids glue stains. Doors are superb. Overall, an A+ on this project.
Cheers
I've been curious about this for a while, why don't you use joinery when building panels? I've always thought that adding joints, biscuits, t&g, etc. makes a panel much stronger. "Wife was right" simple is harder to do really well.
Man, that black poly is a game changer. I love general finishes stuff already. Also the wife was right, but you were too ..... Everybody wins!
👍🤠 Found your channel a month or two ago, been watching a bunch. I’ve been interested in woodworking for a long time but on a way smaller scale. Right now I’m making a walking stick for my daughter by hand, (a Stanley knife, cheap ass chisels & sand paper). Hoping for a Dremel for Christmas. Just for fun, I’m that old man sitting on my porch with a knife. Couldn’t imagine having all those tools. I don’t think you should let the people who give you a hard time about them get to you. You do a nice job with what you do and your videos are well put together. . . “I’ll be back”…Wife was right, aren’t they always?
I agree with you Jonny all of his stuff looks like its from the 50's and 60's. Yours is way better and more whimsy.
Nice build Jonny, but the wife is not always right all the time. OUCH!!! sorry the wife is always right every single time. I have to go now and clean the bathroom with the toothbrush my beloved wife has given me to use OUCH!!!, which is the right tool to use as the wife is always right.
Wife was right... And Shaper Origin might just be the most fun you can have making sawdust.
Just a top guy! Amazing talent, brilliantly put together videos and always worth a second watch. Thanks Jonny 👍
Wife was right, which I was going to post anyway. My mom, an Oakie home ec teacher always graded hand sewn garments starting on the inside-out. Beautiful and elevated! How about some Tool in the mix? 😊😊😊
Love this one and the Shaper is such a cool tool I hope I'll have one myself some day. Oh and your wife was right :)
Wife was right! Really like this project but I still think my favorite vid was the one that was basically 20 min. of dick jokes!
Remember, a happy life is where the wife was right (maybe misinformed and incorrect, but right nonetheless).
Don't know who designed it but it's pretty damn cool. "Your wife is right"
Wife was right. Elegant simplicity is more often a a better indicator of higher proficiency. It’s a real show of mastery to simplify complexity rather than complicated the already complex. But what do I know, I’m just a young dude who loves to make stuff and I fetchin love the tambor skull cabinet btw.
Really amazing your narrative...! True is: Get things well done in the way you like must... if not, go work somewhere else for salary... Congrats!
Your wife was right. Now send me my t-shirt Johnny. 2XL. I’ve been watching you for a couple years now. One of my comments actually made it on one of your live streams. Question was what project do you have going on now, I’m a nurse so I said keeping people alive which was read on the stream. Proud moment for me. lol. Now on to the t-shirt. I’m waiting, not very patiently 😂😉
Wife was right! I would not call this boring at all. You improved on the original piece. Just beautiful!
Wife was right, as usual haha.
Also I promise you, this piece isn't boring in the slightest. Way more interesting than any of the furniture in my home. You definitely have eccentric taste haha. Great job as always! I always look forward to your videos :)
Wife is always right….100% of the time… this is so you have a peaceful life….. 😂 great build love the purple heart and walnut too!
Your wife was right and you should thank her! That’s a fantastic piece sometimes less is more.. while you like custom designs within your piece not everyone agrees with it from a buying standpoint anyway loved this one!❤❤
'My wife was right' How have you got this far without realising she is ALWAYS right!!!!
"wife was right" You have always done an Amazing Job no matter what.👏👏👏👏👏
Paul McCobb drinking game anyone? And also wife was right!
The wife is right. I really like your other cool builds with the skulls and tattoo art, but this was a nice contrast to those other builds. Not super complicated, but also has a very nice contrast with the mostly lighter room you put the shelf in. Although I am very interested to see a build with skulls and fire, and maybe you could experiment using a torch to "carve" out your designs (if you haven't done that already). I've seen other people do it and it always looks really good when done right.
Wife was right.
I sometimes get big ideas, and I always preface it by saying "it's an idea, but not necessarily a good idea". Occasionally, I do come up with good ideas, but sometimes other people don't like it, so I have to compromise rather than be told it's stupid.
Wife was right.
I've been married 25 years. She was was wrong once but to her credit she did own up to it. That's why I love her.
Glad to see you Jonny!!
It was actually yesterday that I thought it had been a while since your last video. Awesome work as always!!!
Wife was right. Or Happy Wife, Happy Life. I liked the black.
wife was right
I also wanted THAT piece as soon as you showed it, until you were done, now yours is definitely better. I'll give you an out for being a germaphobe: I'll promise to buy some merch if you promise to hug it before you ship it! lol
The wife was right. This is badass. Use the tools you have, to make the most awesome stuff. Screw the haters. Those of us who actually are on the journey know, even with the best tools, the limiting factor is still our skill and creativity. It’s a pleasure to watch content from folks who are killing it out there. Keep it up!
Wife was right! Nicely done. I do like the mix of tech and handtools. Please send me details on the full facemask dust extractor you are using.
Wife was right. Indeed she was. Beautiful piece. Perfect decision to paint it black and to change the doors.
Wife was right, and I hope she tells you to stop obsesssing about what people think about you being a woodworker. 😎
wife was right..
and if you want to keep her as your wife, add the 'always' part out loud too.. 🤣😂🤣
The whole time I thought it would be a normal finish. And when you brought the black, my mind was of course its Jonny its gotta be black
Wife was right. Just remember when making some project to
K. I. S. S. it. Keep it simple stupid. I learned that through cooking. I'm sure you have so many gorgeous pieces in your home you've made and this is another one, but unless you want to live in a museum sometimes simple is best. The people that say you aren't a wood worker are just jealous they don't have some of those tools. So no worries. Believe in yourself and others will too.
Wife was definitely right, even if you rambled on and on about it. Beautiful piece though.
wife is right, except for that 1 time that no one dares bring up. Nice project! Take care & stay safe.
Is it me or is jb looking lean 💪
Down 20 lbs 🙌!
Wife was right!
It actually ended up really beautiful! Love it❤
your Wife is definitely right! this is a wonderful build . I would love something like that from my hubby
Wife was right, but you were too. Taking this piece and then elevating it with your own flair and style was absolutely the right call!
With respect it cannot be an "original" Paul Mccobb piece because even if look liked a Mccobb piece it would be a copy and not an original... but good video.
Yay!! I’ve missed watching these builds!!! So good to see you!
Love your videos, and your wife was right 🙂
The black finish looks great in contrast to the doors 😊
Wife was right.
But she agreed that the black looked god, so do I.
It looks amazing.
Wife was right. Wife will be always right, even though she's wrong.
Omg you talk to much. More woodworking less talking.
I did not expect that grain to pop so well after stain, omg😮
Sometimes a simple elegant, classy design is the way to go, and in this case
Johnny was kinda wrong 😂
And wife was right on the money
Wife was right. Nice build. Great exploration on your part.
i love woodworking and i can only shake my head at people trying to gatekeep, like yes, an incredibly detailed piece of furniture done entirely with handtools IS more impressive than the same thing made with hightech simply because it DOES take alot more time and skill, however that doesnt change anything on the end result, if the piece looks good then it looks good, end of story, the amount of time and skill spent on a piece is entirely the craftmans decision and they should be the only one who cares
Wife was right , it looks amazing, and those purple heart drawers are a nice hidden suprise touch.
As I know, this type of furniture has its origins in Asia, and is based on the yin-yang symbol and was usually made of teak wood.
Looks like your wife was right!
And for the love of all things holy, straighten up the tattoo artwork frames 😂😂
She was right. 🤣 But I can appreciate that you took full advantage of an opportunity to get some new tools. 😂
Your wife was right, simpler and boring does still work. This is a piece that could fit in an home with ease.
You know who isnt right? Those asshole that keep saying you are not doing woodworking. Its wood, and you are working it. They are only upset that you can do so easier then they were able to.
