Our friend Emad bought a Kia EV6 77.4kWh AWD Wind from over 1,000 miles north of his home in Texas! As far as we know this is the first independent road trip in an EV6 in America at the time of filming. Of course Kia drove one across the country for the Guinness record but the Out of Spec team feels we could have beaten their time easily.
Emad flies to Green Bay to buy the car, then picks up Jordan Schiefer in Chicago, and the two of them experience the midwest in winter on their first EV road trip using CCS. Emad talks about his buying experience, first thoughts on the Kia EV6, and they experience a variety of charging experiences, temperatures, and charging networks!

@@Shapoopie16 PlugShare is still the king of comprehensive charging spot finder apps in North America. Sometimes you have to get creative. Ask to plug into a standard 120V outlet at a hotel, find a campground with cabins near a NEMA 14-50 outlet, etc. Anything helps until, as you point out, the charging infrastructure catches up. Also, if you have no other choice but to DCFC, do it while the battery is still warm at the end of the day. Charging a cold soaked battery in the morning sucks.

On-route battery preconditioning seems to be the largest problem with this car. Every stop had an ice cold battery limiting charging speeds even with Winter Mode enabled. Warm weather trips should be much better but then we’ll see how well the cooling system can handle repeated high charging rates.

NO CARS ARE READY WITHOUT BATTERY PREHEAT! What's frustrating is that it is just software because the hardware is already there in most of the cars. Battery preheat must be standard in all cars (even manual) and battery temperature should always be displayed like the oil temp was in ICE cars.

The issue with range these guys experienced was largely due to excessive high speeds. Saw 77 mph a few glances of the dash. Any speed above 65 mph comprises range severely due to aerodynamic loads. From 55 to 70 mph calm winds, the air resistance increases power consumption 30% average. That’s a huge drain on batteries. The discussion tends to be: drive faster to destination to charge more electrons; drive 65 mph to destination to charge less electrons. Does the time balance out? Calculation of time/distance using the speed differences 65 vs 75 for a 180 mile run, could prove slower is better. 180/60=3 hours. Would 2:45 minutes at 65 mph make much difference? 70 mph? 25 minutes? Now enter the energy used and time/cost to recharge/speed of recharge. Newer EVs can recharge faster as this EV6 shoes, perhaps a bit slower in cold temperatures as the battery temp is not optimized prior to arrival at the charger. Question is: would driving at 65 -70 mph, cruise control, end up with a faster trip to the day’s destination? Did it matter to drive 8 hours vs 7:15? Was the cost higher driving faster? Lastly, a hotel with complementary L2 charger would have reduced charging time and money as well. Thanks for the report. Impressive EV.

I would like to know what they actually experienced for range in winter. Interstates here are 80mph so it's not out of the question to go as fast as they did in the video, though I would like to know that affect on the range. It is all still a mystery regarding Winter Mode as well: Why does Winter Mode reduce range when it should increase range bringing the battery up to a better temperature, for example?

Look into ABRP ( A better Route Planner). It's like the Tesla route planner, but it works with a bunch of EVs. You put in your specific EV and when you put in a start/destination it plans all the stops, time needed to charge, and cost based on your specific car. It has the EV6 as an option. This is where Tesla still has the lead, as this is built into the car navigation system, and if you use it the car will condition the battery for the charges. But, ABR is a good alternative for non-Teslas.

For anyone who didn't understand the issue at the first charger Electrify America stations have 2 RFID readers. One is on the stall and is used for a phone to verify membership. The other is on the pay terminal and is for wireless tap to pay. If you tap your phone on the pay terminal it will attempt to charge the credit card attached rather than use the membership (and charge the $0.43/kW rate even if you have the paid membership).

Good info along the way especially about Electrify America's naming of their chargers... that's something that needs to be changed. Cringed at Emad putting blue tape on his EV6, but understand the why. Seems like as of Feb 2022 that the infrastructure has a ways to go yet.

Thank you Guys for taking us on your EV trip! This trip gave us a live view of what we would experience on a long trip! The cold weather issue is very concerning with me. I do understand their is a software issue that will fix this issue! Time will tell! The Infrastructure for EVs outside of Tesla has to get better! The locations are not the best! I would find myself consistently looking at how many miles I have before I need to find a EV Charging Station! Then hoping it work, is it in a safe area! My drive as current would be very frustrating! Especially the cost of the car at the top price! I have a 2021 Hyundai Hybrid Sonata Blue it gets me 600 miles before my next fill up! It is 54 miles on the highway and 50 miles in the city per gallon of gas! I do love the Kia EV6! But not enough at this time! I will wait a few years to see how things turn out! But it will be a add on!
    I love my Sonata!

The Android Auto not being full screen is actually something i like in my Hyundai Santa Cruz - I use that side panel to display vehicle info ... radio/weather/etc. I find it far more useful than a widescreen map. I'm guessing you haven't found those options in the menus yet. There's a lot to dig through though. :)
This trip really points out one of the biggest issues holding back EVs for some people - the charging infrastructure. Until it's consistently fast, and the stations consistently WORK (which is disturbing, considering they're essentially all brand new-ish installations), range anxiety will remain real - because while you may know where the next charger is, you don't know if it will charge you when you get there. That's a huge issue. Also, what you've pointed out about the location of a lot of chargers. Half a mile across a Walmart parking lot with no real amenities for travelers isn't a great experience. Things are getting better, but not quite there yet for great EV road trips.

    Fun/pro tip for all:
Most newer EVs, this one included, have battery pre-conditioning. In order to use pre-conditioning, you need to navigate using the car's built-in navigation. Using Android Auto or Apple Car Play will not tell the car you're navigating to a charger and the car will not pre-condition the battery for fast charging.
This was probably already mentioned somewhere in the comments

  • @Geckogold

Thanks for sharing the video. Hope that Emad enjoys his EV6!
That said, this video might also scare some people away from EV's in general, such as during your discussion with dealers doing high markups on them, and then having trouble at various EV charging stations, to mentioning that the EV6 doesn't even come with the EVSE (electric vehicle supply equipment) to charge at home with? It would suck for the first time EV buyer who didn't do their homework ahead of time to find out these problems.
If anything, this video shows how Tesla, love them or hate them, has done EV's right. Sure, you can't normally get discounts on them, but they also don't randomly mark it up ridiculously either. And almost every supercharger I've been to has always worked. If it didn't, there were often 4-8 other stalls you could try so you're not necessarily forced to find another charger. Tesla will usually get the broken ones working within a few days.
Even preconditioning the battery while enroute to a supercharger so that the battery is nice and toasty for a faster charging session are things they've taken into consideration. And in the event you do have to wait a while, there's also built-in entertainment options to pass the time.
I hope that other automakers are taking notes on how to make owning an EV better if they want people to buy them.

Thank you for the great video. I really wasn't planning to spend 96 minutes watching this but it was very informative and entertaining. As someone who lives in Wisconsin, the lack of battery preconditioning and the lack of route adjusting to a charge station are both problematic. I saw on a forum that both are supposedly coming as software updates but I think I'll hold off until that's established as fact. I rented a Model 3 in AZ and those features were extremely handy and I liked that I didn't need to fumble with an app like you need to with the EA charge stations. Quick tip: the best way to activate the EA chargers is by adding your account to your Apple wallet or google pay wallet. Then you can just tap you phone and charge. Using the app leaves a lot more room for error as the phone has to log in, connect to the network, and send the charger your info. Lots of this places don’t have great cell service leaving you stranded or waiting a long time to connect.

I didn’t read all the replies to see if this is mentioned, but many of the EA stations I’ve been to more recently have stickers added to them to show what the station number is. Having it on top of the station isn’t very intuitive, and I think they realized that. Also, I don’t think the battery preconditioning works unless you use the built in navigation to navigate to the charger.
I think my personal take-away from my time with electric vehicles (almost 4 years now) is that yes, an ICE vehicle is more convenient for longer trips where you have to recharge between destinations or for longer distance towing, but an electric vehicle is more convenient and generally more fun in almost any other daily driving circumstance. The convenience gap between ICE and electric vehicles on long trips has substantially narrowed over the past 4 years to the point that a road trip in my Model 3 is not really an inconvenience at all. The time between charging stops is about as long as the time between restroom stops.

That’s crazy that you guys are missing out on charging speed like that. Kia/Hyundai need to fix those preheating issues ASAP.
This also further reinforces my view that the dealers should help you setup charging and we need Auto-Charge or Plug and Charge with roaming. You should be able to setup all the payments there and be ready to go once you drive off the lot.
With my Model 3, I had supercharging setup right out the gate and my car preconditioned before my first supercharge automatically. I saw 220kW on that first charge and all I had to do was plug in.
All the other automakers should make that experience their goal for new EV drivers. Setup the accounts with Plug and Charge or Autocharge with EA and all the other networks with roaming for small networks like Francis right from the get go.
I also don’t get why charging providers seem to use the worst credit card readers known to man. Come on guys, get that fixed!

@@Emadifications Thanks for letting the out of spec guys make videos with your car! If you end up using Francis again, I recommend ordering an RFID card from them before you go with the app. When I use my RFID, the stations usually work even if the screen on the charger is weird and I can see charge status in their app when I activate them that way.
This stuff shouldn’t be required but if you want it to work well you’ve got to play their weird games. Even through I own a Tesla, there are way more Francis chargers here in Oklahoma than Superchargers so it was worth it to me to get the stuff to use their network (Chademo adapter and RFID). I’d also recommend getting a Chargepoint RFID too. There’s quite a few of those around and it helps for other networks it roams on too like EV-Go.

Early on I put the cord number in instead of charger number and realized I was paying for a guy at the other charger. Figured it out and nice guy at the other one (also new ev owner) was cool with me cutting him off.

This was a great vid. I also think Jordan did super well. The EV6 looks great and I love the interior, but after watching this vid I feel the vehicle does not quite live up to the looks. Obviously the battery range is a problem and did you ever figure out what the heck was up with that sensor issue when you were behind a truck at the red light? All in all, really enjoyed watching you and Emad behind the wheel in this road trip and look forward to seeing more.

Nicer interior than the Ionic5. I think Kia knocked it out of the park. I’m a Toyota/Subaru loyalist and not sure their product will compare on many fronts. Thanks for this video!

I'm an Ioniq 5 driver coming from a long history with Toyota/Subaru. The BZ4X/Solterra looks so disappointing. They should be capable of so much more.

I've seen Bentleys in the Walmart parking lot. I guess that's how they got rich...always low prices!

@@jghall00 - not a knock on Walmart. I just thought it was a funny comment and an interesting observation about the EV charging infrastructure. :)

I would suggest using the app to charge instead of the tap to pay at EA. They charge an additional $50 each a charge is initiated. Granted it comes off after a few days but it was quite surprising when it happened to me.

If you have a iPhone all you need to do is tap rfid symbol I have my membership card in apple wallet. And I use Face ID to sign into app. It starts up no swiping and I don’t need a credit card. Before rode trip you need to sign up and learn from someone how to use it. I have zero problems but in the winter you won’t get great speeds. And .31 cent kWh is great compared to per minute. Especially if it charges slow. Ev go charges 39 cents per minute.

Thank you for the video. Very informative and extensive real time driving this EV. This is one of the EVs I am considering but still researching the plus and minuses.

There will be fights and shootings over the use of limited chargers. Some guy on here had to wait over an hour to use a charger , time is MONEY.

Just FYI, highly recommend getting a physical card for EA and all the other charging stations. Better and faster than having to whip out the phone to get a charging session going.
