My whole goal is to move the car industry to greener energy sources. I think having a lot of charging stations will help with this goal. I have talked to a lot of people about EV's and the number one thing I've heard is problems with charging or lack of charging. This was definitely the case three years ago for pretty much every car manufacturer besides Tesla. Has it got better in those 3 year 100%, will it get better in the next 3 years absolutely. But when you are trying to travel long distances in an EV and you get somewhere that only has one charger in the town and it doesn't work, this is a big problem. The other thing that Tesla has done is build in redundancy. Most superchargers have two or four cabinets running an average of 8 chargers. This way if two of the chargers are broke or one cabinet is down you still have options. I would like to see EA and EVGO doing this also.
@@drab2000 yeah. Their early issues were that there wasn’t enough of them. But they always started charging within seconds. Rarely would one not work. EA works 50% of the time. And take 5 min hand shake. And even if it does work the KWH is inconsistent. Early days on SC didn’t have these issues.
Watching all of these charging fails at the Electrify America stations only reaffirms how relatively stable and reliable the Tesla Supercharger network is. The Fast Lane channel did a video where they have a Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E at DC fast chargers, and while the Model Y's charging speeds weren't high likely due to sharing the charging station with another Tesla and possibly having a cold battery, the Mach-E was having trouble similarly to Kyle here and it took them 3 tries before he got it to charge. And even then, it was charging at a slower speed than the Model Y was. Though Kyle's attitude during these moments is certainly upbeat, I'd imagine many others in the same situation probably wouldn't be very happy, especially considering how much more the Taycan costs. And for others, it's probably convincing them that EV's, or at least non-Tesla ones, aren't ready for primetime.

Hard to understand all this hate in the comments. Cool car, wish I had one in addition to my M3P. World would be a boring place if all cars were Teslas.
Absolutely Porsche first attempt at a proper full EV sports Car and it’s very very good. Quality it’s next level but that’s was never in question but it’s a drivers Car. Just like I wouldn’t touch Tesla on build quality issues - friend got a long range 2021 model a few weeks back and already back at the dealer five times for faults and fixes. The door seal actually fell off after a days use. But I understand the attraction when the charge network Tesla is light years ahead of everyone and if you can accept it’s a Tesla and the build quality is what it is then it’s a Car many will enjoy.
Give it a few more years, pretty much all car makers have announce making EV's, but first we need a charging station at every single gas station for EV's to really take off. The "running out of juice" anxiety is what's keeping most folks getting an EV.

Great video as always! The Taycan seems like a nice car and I agree it gets a bad rap. However, I am really disappointed to see all of the issues you ran into with the Electrify America network. With how long it takes to authorize charging+handshake+potentially move the car to a different spot, it seems Tesla supercharging may be faster. How do they expect this to work when more cars are on the road and these stations are full? Also, a great video idea would be to run a MS LR+ or Model 3 LR side by side with a Taycan. See who gets to the destination first.
That question has been answered. They just finished a cannonball run in this very car and beat their previous record in his model 3. Again I believe they had some charging problems that they worked out with direct contact with Electrify America. I have a suspicion that because this is a press car it could be a early production car or even a late prototype car. Could explain the issues with handshaking and overcharging etc. Don't know this for a fact but considering Kyle has used some of the same chargers on other cars without problem lends me to think that it's an issue with the vehicle more than the network in this particular case. Although Electrify America certainly has their fair share of issues. Keep in mind they have built over 500 charging stations in the last year the rate and pace of construction is really astonishing. It's not really surprising that there are some problems and glitches, someone else mentioned in the comments that there may have been financial penalties from the federal government if they didn't meet certain build out numbers within a certain time.
@@kens97sto171 It is hard to compare cars on a long distance cross country run. I am sure there were lots of variables outside of the vehicles that affected times. We will have to wait to see the cannonball run video for the Taycan. I still think there would be value in seeing a side by side Tesla vs. Taycan rally for a shorter distance (400-600 miles). Regarding the build out of EA, if 3 out of the 4 chargers at a station do not work at stated charging speed that is not impressive. Owners are going to have issues if just one other person is charging at a station.
EA CCS chargers are not like Tesla Superchargers that are build by Tesla only for Tesla cars. EA i not build by VW, and still has to be compatible not only with VAG EV but also other CCS EV unlike car Superchargers that work for one brand. EA build plenty of those stations in short time. Give it two years and you will see more CCS in the US, the quality may also be better.
This video shows exactly why Tesla continues, and will continue for some time, to crush the competition when it comes to road trips and for folks who can't charge at home. For EVs, at least for a while longer, charging infrastructure is at least as important as the vehicles themselves.
I think we'll live to see Tesla be a normal automaker, once they sort out quality problems and the electric car becomes the norm, I feel like they'll be an option and a good one later on.
I can't believe these companies can't get the chargers to work. I drive a Nissan Leaf and I had to move from a nonworking 50KW to a level 2 7KW a couple of times at midnight. Tesla still 5 years ahead of everybody else.

They also beat Tesla in the Cannonball Run meaning it IS possible to road trip and there IS infrastructure out there. Also, I don’t like to rely on numbers put out by manufacturers. Tesla seems to be very liberal with its range numbers, while Porsche has always been very conservative. As far as cultural appeal, I feel it’s hard to argue that people WANT Tesla’s. You can’t argue that point unless there are other options. They just like having electric cars that can drive themselves. I really dislike the Tesla exterior and interior design and find the whole package hard to stomach at their price points. 1:04:00 Liquid tire flat fix in a can is not recommended for highway use vehicles except as an emergency to get you to a tire repair facility. It works by getting hot and melting the tire rubber to fix the leak weakening the tire. This is what I was told at Belle Tire and this also checked out when I looked up reviews on line. In my case I've used Green Slime at just a couple ounces to about half the recommended quantity to fix persistent slow leaks and a very small leak in the sidewall that was not repairable in on a new car with a new tire with no road hazard tire warranty. I then decided to go a head and use the full recommended quantity on both front tires of my V6 Accord because they'd loose about a pound of air pressure a week if driving it a lot. I thought maybe this would give the tires some self healing from minor punctures. What happened was the tires were very out of balance until warm and then still very notably out of balance. I took the car in for balance and they made it worse at Discount Tire Cumberland Indiana and were very insulting to the car and myself. I had been taking our three cars to that Discount Tire for tires and had purchased the road hazard insurance. I then took the car to Belle Tire and explained the situation and the clerk explained that liquid tire repair products like Green Slime heat up to melt the tire's rubber to fix the leak. That effectively destroys the tire. That's why instructions say to take the tire in for service as soon as possible or if it shows problems with balance if using it on highway vehicles. When I was putting in just a couple of ounces of Green Slime to reduce bleeding off of air that probably wasn't hurting anything. The tires had considerably more than half their tread still on them. It's a performance vehicle meant to work with at least V-speed rated tires. Michelin was the OEM for the tires on that car and no longer makes V-speed rated or higher tires in its tire size. The tread life on the tires would have likely taken the car to the end of its useful life with us, so it's a major problem. The reason I like keeping the car around is because it's a performance vehicle although of mild ability. After a long bit of research I'd decided on the tires it has on it now and only later discovered they were the current version of the OEM tires. I wish I'd never followed the instructions and put the full can of Green Slime into those tires.

In addition, I thank you Kyle for all of the transparency regarding the EA charging network ...of which, I'm about half through the vid and view their network as about an 80-90% network,...or viewed another way ...a 10-20% fail due to the availability of WORKING really Fast Chargers! Those that want to invest in an electric vehicle don't want to have one foot in the electric camp and the other foot in the ICE camp. So, as much as manufacturers want to sell EVs, unless they are willing g to invest in the "Charging Network" at the level of Tesla, then the migration to EVs from ICE vehicles will be a lot slower than anyone want to happen! Folks are accustomed to making a road trip on 1 ...to 2 ...to 3 tanks of gas,...and with an EV,....and depending on which EV, that would mean 1-2 stops per equivalent tank of gas distance! When I visit family near Tampa from Northern VA, I can make the trip (900 miles) within 2 tanks of gas in an X5,...a TT V8 X5 at that. Also, I usually stop about 4 times, at the border of VA/NC,...the first Rest Area in SC ...and either in Brunswick, GA area or Exit 2 just near the GA/FL border and then around Ocala area. So, I'm not against having to stop for charging, but stopping and not finding working Chargers is a major Fail! In parting, the 900 mile trip takes me 17hrs going and 15.5 hours for the return trip. If I could make the same trip in an EV in about a +1 hour difference, I say that would be a win for me.

This is why I LOVE my Tesla and the reliable Supercharging network. Hope EA is watching this video.

This was way more entertaining than it should have been! EA chargers sure do add to the suspense! 😂

More advertising for tesla 😂
EA is like Windows Vista trying to be compatible with several third parties components and Tesla SC as OSX and Macs.
Won't matter anymore once Tesla opens their supercharger network to all EVs.

I just watched his road trip with the ford mach e and he had problems as well with charging. So pretty sure it's the charger
its the chargers
If your road trip consists of driving from station to station at the same charging center then this car is perfect
The car looks great, EA charging network, not so much. Definitely pretty stark comparison to Tesla superchargers.
8 years for tesla supercharger 2 years for EA plus tesla only has to worry about tesla ea is for non tesla
Supercharger by me as 20 stalls that are busy quite often. The co-located 12 EA stalls almost never have a car. They even have a 350 Kw stall I have never seen anyone use.
Because they never work properly lol 😅
Man, ElectrifyAmerica need to improve their software infrastructure. These charging faults scream software. @Kyle is ElectrifyAmerica hiring software developers at the moment or on the next 3 months? Would be interested to help them :D
Great video. Very informative. Now I know EV is not quiet ready for prime time. Looking forward to the time when charging get a smooth operation.
Watch a Tesla video.
taycan dash lookin good!
I would no put up with that charger frustration. Excellent review and information.
So glad I own a Tesla, would not have the nerve and most of all the time to be joking around charging stations with other EVs. Great roadtrip video though!
Yes, the quality build of a tesla is a soviet car, youve been scammed for your money !
@@fachadolid3030 Made my day. I suppose you drive a VW.
@@lbtobl83 no i dont, but i wouldnt pay 60k for a soviet car interior like tesla, and the resale value close to 0, so youre gonna have a problem when you try to sell it
@@fachadolid3030 Soviet car interior? Ever seen a tesla or a lada up close? I agree about quick depreciation, the secret is not to buy a new tesla, but if you get a good deal on a used car, you can sell it one year later for more. Been there, done that more than once. :)
@@fachadolid3030 From where you getting this fud from?😂
For someone considering a used Taycan,...or say,...a new or used i4 M50,...i5 M60, or even a Tesla, this has been a perfect video to watch.
Tesla needs to add the air conditioned seats and a passenger display to the Model S and X. Also, Electrify America needs to work on station reliability.
I have a couple MB EVs and have used the port charlotte and Bushnell chargers. The MBs won’t pull that much charge. Have had similar issues in PC but the Bushnell chargers have always worked great for me
VW builds both the charger and the car, and the cable doesn't reach, LOL.
german engineering
VW doesn't build EA charger, they fund them and third parties build the hardware and chargers.
@@JH-dh2ws , true, by "build" I was alluding to the fact VW group has helped fund the project. I would just think that the chargers would have a long enough cable for a VW group product. AE cables should be long enough for every scenario as it is intended for all EVs.
@@Josh-179 They’re probably also not the ones in charge of QC. Though I imagine over time the stations will get improved since it seems their current concern is building out enough to support the ev market in the US.
I imagine non Tesla EV owners in my state will be happy just to have fast chargers on some of the routes here considering all we had in Alabama before hand was Tesla Superchargers and I think two fast chargers? Everything else was lvl 2 or slower
VW do not build Porsche.
Love this channel. After watching this and the Mach-E trip, I sure am glad I have a Tesla.
Tesla owners don't know the struggle. I'm getting charging anxiety from watching this video.
The driver may want to cut down on the caffeine a bit. These charging issues are a huge problem for EV adoption. Tesla Superchargers don't typically have these problems and is a HUGE selling point.
In Europe there are more CCS than Superchargers in the bigger cities and it keeps increasing. The US wont be any difference in a couple of years..
@siliara Tesla superchargers are made by Tesla for Tesla so it s not a no brainer why it works better for Tesla.
TeslaBjorn says that you should hold the plug (keep pushing it in) during the handshake for the actuator to lock. Maybe that would help with some of the problems.
I love regular Porsche and Audi cars, but when it comes to EV's, i'd still choose a Tesla over a Taycan or an E-Tron
Agreed! Especially all charging Network issues. Tesla is so easy vast and seamless it really is way ahead of everyone, especially the ease of use of supercharging everywhere
thanks for the great video, wow the ran of fuel problem is not just for EV's. We had similar experience with gasoline car with two young kids in the back around mid night on I-5 middle of no where and I almost had an heart attack. First time I saw 0 miles on the meter..
Absolutely fantastic video, what an absolutely beautiful car. if I had an unlimited budget I would definitely get one of these. That customizable interior and the 300 settings to make your car perfect for you is definitely right up my alley.
This is a press car and I'm wondering if maybe it's an early production car or even a late prototype. I wonder if that could be the problem with the charging. Maybe it's the car not the network causing the glitches? Anyway glad you posted it thoroughly enjoyable watching your road trips.
Thanks for the video; it has given me some more to think about as far as getting an electric car. It either a Lucid or model S plaid or an ice car.
EA network truly sucks! Imagine later, getting crowded...
Great review!!!! How good is the massage function? How good is the ventilated seat function?
tesla low voltage helps with charging stability?
Love your enthusiasm. However, this video confirms that VW/Porsche/EA are not ready for road trip prime time. My favorite quote is, "Well, at least we are not stranded." Range anxiety much? Most interesting to me is that the EV experience with local use is better than ICE in that you just plug in at home and no worries, ever, and no going to a gas station. Road trips, however, as you document, are a continually anxious adventure, something few are willing to pay a premium to endure.
Would change my M3P for a Taycan every day of the week, only if i could afford one :/
I just stumbled on this video and it was great! I love watching road trip videos when done (edited) nicely.
