I’m glad you made this to counter MKBHD’s fairly poorly done comparison of Tesla and CCS charging infrastructure and to help show people that you don’t need a Tesla to road trip an EV.
The point is that it is not simple to road trip with CCS cars. No question, it is possible to road trip, however Tesla road tripping is a lot simpler and requires way less education/prior research.

I was expecting that I skip through the video for the interesting parts. But it is amazing how the whole video is super interesting. I couldn't skip a bit.
Fun video....the challenges of CCS continue, but at least they are working once you get it to communicate with the car/app properly, so it is getting better. But, Tesla still makes road trips a stress-free event nearly 100% of the time.
@@darekmistrz4364 Tesla uses the CCS connector in Europe, but they do not conform to the spec. They don't use the communication protocol and they go way over the rated 500A at 625A and soon up to 810A. Connectors don't mean much, it's the specs that count and CCS is a terrible spec for a 400V EV. As you heard Kyle say in the video, it's fine for 800V cars like the Porsche he was driving and the Ioniq 5. Of course the connector is terrible too, just watch them wrestle with it in this video compared to the Tesla connector.
I live vicariously through these videos. With my 24kwh leaf I can drive for maybe 45 miles on the highway before my battery dies. Poor thing barely survives my commute.
Very entertaining. You know you are a Nerd. When you watch 1.5 hrs of this video. Then you are left with wanting the ending. Lol. Keep up the good work. From a fellow Nerd. 😆

@@loriallen67 We couldn't have gotten it at a better time! Literally the night before the trip! Im pretty sure Patrick responded to you about this somewhere else but ya it has been pretty awesome! What's not to love, right?!
Just imagine how bad this will get for CCS as more Ioniq 5s, EV6s, Mach-Es and ID 4s hit the road. I test drove the Ioniq 5 and really liked it. May get one and save the Tesla for road trips.
It wont, the Fed is throwing billions at the problem. In a couple of years the J1772 DC network will dwarf Teslas. In fact Tesla is well on its way to get rid of its particular connector. It's already done so in a few EU countries which have required it to do so.
Presumably there will be a mix: more and more cars using these chargers makes the business case for more to be built. And larger charging stations are more efficient in cost per charger. On the other hand it will mean some crowded stations on holidays.
I love this! Keep up the good work and y’all are doing great job with the long form reviews and trips! 🤘 Can’t wait for the Hummer/F-150/Rivian road trip soon!
That 2022 Model 3 Performance is a great car. I got 247 WH/mi in mine on the way to the track. I ran 11.40 @ 117+ mph for the 1/4 mile and 3.04 0-60 mph. Pretty incredible to get good efficiency and still be fast too.
Very nice, makes me wonder what a plaid model 3 performance would be like. Since the plaid uses the same 3&y motors, just modified with c.f. rotors. Ad 4680s in the structural pack and the single piece castings, track mode&track pack standard, maybe air suspension finally. That could be a serious monster in its own right. 🤔
@@rudyyyxu probably not. 😐 I'd really like to see them make a performance 2dr coupe to combat the mustang/camaro/400z segment. Base it on the 3 chassis with the castings and structural pack. Use the plaid motors, sell a rwd 350 or so hp model for only 45k with a few options like track pack available. Put real performance seats in it then offer an awd version with 600+hp for 55k. Wonder how many they would sell. 🤔
With the Model 3 still charging at 55 kW power, it should be a piece of cake for the Taycan. This is not just about the cars, but 50% about the drivers...
After one year with my Model Y we have not had a single issue with charging. I refuse to deal with the range anxiety that would come with many of the others.
I've done 46 supercharger stops and 35 CCS charges over the past 4.5yr and only one time had an issue, at a supercharger in NY and all I had to do was move stalls. I will give credit to Out of Spec for that success though. This is where I learned the tricks, which is why I'm confused that every one of them weren't activating charges before plugging in. Although, it shows how the simplicity of the supercharger network is it's true strength over the competition
Haven't read all comments yet and it's surely been said before: It seems you mostly arrived at the charging stations with more than 20% SOC and charged up to 100% before moving on. That costs you about an hour on your trip. The fastest charging happens between 0-20% SOC. (you hardly ever did that) The slowest charging happens between 80-100% SOC. (you mostly did that) Move your usable 80% gap down a notch or two and you will road trip way faster. Same range, more charging speed. Awesome video - makes me wanna road trip again :) [edit] Just watched Pt. 2 and it seems you did ride it out then a lot more.
He mentioned that each car will make about 3 or 4 stops. A lot of people will look at that as a negative of EVs… that you have to stop that many times. BUT according to National Highway Safety, every 3 to 4 hours of driving requires a 45 minute rest stop to prevent driver fatigue/drowsiness. It is actually dangerous too drive to long. An EV actually forces drivers to rest frequently on long road trips
It also asumes you have public chargers you can just use... In Florida we don't besides one per major city park... The rest you can find are Dealers, Telsa or hotels and all of them you need a certin BEV to use.
@@89five3five as a person who lives in Orlando, infrastructure is not great yet. We have one EA station in the city proper and only a few in the area surrounding. Not to me tonight I've only seen one supercharger in the city as well. We still need more built to make it worth the while.
The side by side video of plugging in a Tesla vs any of the other cars is hilarious. It’s literally 2 seconds with the Tesla and 1-2 minutes fiddling on the phone before plugging in with the other cars.
Sad story: Tesla bid on a contract in Texas this year to build out a reliable general charging network, at a *FIFTH* of the cost vs the others (~$30k vs ~$150k iirc) but the officials went with the more expensive option that will probably make chargers as reliable as those seen in this video. Boggles the mind, but oh well, politicians gotta get their kickbacks I guess.
@@AllanSustainabilityFan This is the way they say thanks for bringing all those jobs and businesses to our state. There have been other roadblocks to building out the Tesla chargers for everyone. It's much cheaper (and better) to retrofit Tesla chargers to work with other cars but the Federal Government is only providing grants for creating brand new stations.
May I just tell you... I watch WAY more YT content per week than I should.... I used to have a substantial social media presence back in the early days of FB/Insta etc.... but I'm now retired. This is WAY, by far, some of the best content I've seen/enjoyed in a seriously long time..... the host of this show is IMO the perfect mix of nerd/geek/funny/interesting. I'm thoroughly enjoying your other reviews and channels too. I love the innovation and the tech associated with these new/emerging vehicles...... however from a Macro perspective, I am NOT a fan of the associated geopolitics and environment/ethical lies by omission in respect of the humanitarian costs of the batteries etc. "Lies by omission" meaning the 'stuff' we're not told about the mining etc of the components of the batteries and the human/environmental cost associated with it. I FULLY agree we need a sustainable alternative to diesel/petrol and electric and even hydrogen are possibilities..... NGOs such as WEF and others are accelerating the need/justification for electric cars, but I think a lot more has to be done to address the underlying environmental issues surrounding the efficacy of the batteries and the recycling of them plus the recycling of the cars themselves. (Rant over) But in the main, this video and others are excellent - well done 👍
The time it took Kyle to get the charger working on the Porsche was the same amount of time it took me to fill up a Suburban with 25 gallons of fuel. We love our Tesla and the whole Tesla charge network and the rest of the manufacturers need to work more on the infrastructure and their systems connectivity than even charge speeds at this point.
Love this content keep it up! As great as the tacan speed is, that electrify America payment and charging system looks like a joke. Imagine someone who’s unfamiliar with EVs trying to simply charge. They would be trading the car in after that debacle. Really shows how far superior and advanced the Tesla network is. It simply just works and I love mine. Zero supercharging hassles in the last 5 years
I would hate having to deal with which chargers are not working, or which payment app to use or swiping credit card etc. The tesla supercharger is so much easier to use. In owning our 2021 Model Y Performance for close to a year, we haven't had any issues using tesla superchargers. Just plug in wait for the green light, then wait

Learning a lot about how charging speeds are not always what the manufacturer says they are - especially in cold weather. Good to know.
I was expecting that I skip through the video for the interesting parts. But it is amazing how the whole video is super interesting. I couldn't skip a bit.
Fun video....the challenges of CCS continue, but at least they are working once you get it to communicate with the car/app properly, so it is getting better. But, Tesla still makes road trips a stress-free event nearly 100% of the time.
it's not CCS. It's how EA does it. Here in Europe, CCS is working fine
@@zeydallahoum Good point.
@@zeydallahoum Especially that Tesla is using CCS in superchargers in Europe
@@darekmistrz4364 Tesla uses the CCS connector in Europe, but they do not conform to the spec. They don't use the communication protocol and they go way over the rated 500A at 625A and soon up to 810A. Connectors don't mean much, it's the specs that count and CCS is a terrible spec for a 400V EV. As you heard Kyle say in the video, it's fine for 800V cars like the Porsche he was driving and the Ioniq 5. Of course the connector is terrible too, just watch them wrestle with it in this video compared to the Tesla connector.
@@gregb7353 If they don't conform to spec, how do they support non-Tesla vechicles?
Loved it!!! One of the best concepts of everyday tripping!
Alyssa, if Kyle wasn’t using so much battery power leaning on the horn you’d have power for comfortable climate control! 😂😂. Keep him inline.👍😂
What a great cast of characters playing with a great groups of cars with their eyes on the prize.
Can you please make a 15 minute version of these two videos combining just saw the charging stops. Or a chart at the very end would be great
I live vicariously through these videos.
And here I am reading every single comment. Nuff said
I was hoping for a video like this ever since I bought a Tesla M3. Surprise to see your starting point is FOCO and even recognize the parking lot you were in. Shout to all EV owners in CO especially going on road trips to Vegas!!!
Awesome video! This sort of content is what makes UA-cam my go to for entertainment! The thrill of competition, along with the challenge of maximizing auto manufacturers interpretation of how electric vehicles should work. GREAT JOB GUYS! Keep up the good work. 💯
Thanks!
What a great video! Enjoyed seeing other UA-camrs and friends along on the adventure.

Hi Lori!
@@MachE_VLOG hi! This looks like so much fun. Heard you got blue cruise. What do you think about it?
@@loriallen67 We couldn't have gotten it at a better time! Literally the night before the trip! Im pretty sure Patrick responded to you about this somewhere else but ya it has been pretty awesome! What's not to love, right?!
This was a lot of fun to watch. Definitely can't wait for part 2
To Drew and Alice, ALL THE BEST!
Great and fun video👍 and you found awesome participants in each car.
I've used Tesla's superchargers at least 200 times and never had a problem once. The worst I've had was sharing A/B stalls since the station was V2.
What an awesome video! Would love more like this in the future! ⚡️
this episode was so much fun, can't to see part 2! :)
The teslas will win simply because the Supercharging network for teslas works and the others are frustratingly annoying and often fail,IMO
This is going to be your most viewed video by far. I see this hitting 1M views easy. Need more content like this with other EV UA-camrs
Can't wait for the second part!!
Would love to see this test again with an EQS, Lucid Air, updated model S long range, Rivian, and Hummer EV.
1:03:48
Wow! I think this is probably THE best depiction of the difference in charging experiences I've seen yet.
Really shows how convenient it is to be a Tesla owner on road trips currently
We paid for this. Other EVs are absolutely inferior.
This was such a fun and exciting video, there should be more of these with different cars! I can’t wait for part 2!
Fantastic video highlighting the differences between cars n network's. Really enjoying this video... can't wait to see how it ends...
I love this! Keep up the good work and y’all are doing great job with the long form reviews and trips! 🤘 Can’t wait for the Hummer/F-150/Rivian road trip soon!
👍🤩😎
Kyle! Finally got my wife interested in one of your videos and you end it before the finish line! Can’t wait for the conclusion!
@@4literv6 relax tesla wont give it to us
@@rudyyyxu probably not. 😐
I'd really like to see them make a performance 2dr coupe to combat the mustang/camaro/400z segment. Base it on the 3 chassis with the castings and structural pack. Use the plaid motors, sell a rwd 350 or so hp model for only 45k with a few options like track pack available.
Put real performance seats in it then offer an awd version with 600+hp for 55k. Wonder how many they would sell. 🤔
@@4literv6 Yeah my biggest complaint on track are the seats. 10 minutes into a session I get so tired from bracing
Lets Gooo!!! This was so entertaining. Patiently waiting for part 2
With the Model 3 still charging at 55 kW power, it should be a piece of cake for the Taycan. This is not just about the cars, but 50% about the drivers...
Great video, super interesting with the variety of EV’s. Looks like great fun. Can’t wait for pt 2 :). Keep it coming Kyle and team 👍
This looks soooo much fun! I wish I had my Model Y already and a UA-cam channel to do things like this😅
I enjoyed watching this video as much as you guys enjoyed filming it...
Haven't read all comments yet and it's surely been said before:
It seems you mostly arrived at the charging stations with more than 20% SOC and charged up to 100% before moving on.
That costs you about an hour on your trip.
The fastest charging happens between 0-20% SOC. (you hardly ever did that)
The slowest charging happens between 80-100% SOC. (you mostly did that)
Move your usable 80% gap down a notch or two and you will road trip way faster.
Same range, more charging speed.
Awesome video - makes me wanna road trip again :)
[edit] Just watched Pt. 2 and it seems you did ride it out then a lot more.
This was really entertaining for some reason have to be honest.
I think you guys have way too much fun with your tests. hahaha Love it!
@@GreenBlueWalkthrough you may want to check again. Between Tesla and Electrify America… there are 100s of level 3 chargers in Florida
@@89five3five as a person who lives in Orlando, infrastructure is not great yet. We have one EA station in the city proper and only a few in the area surrounding. Not to me tonight I've only seen one supercharger in the city as well. We still need more built to make it worth the while.
I felt like I was part of this trip, we need part 2 asap!!!
Did you also run that gas-powered car at the same time? I'd love to know how long it took for all cars to get there and how much it costs overall.
Really fun video but I just keep waiting for Alyssa to hit Kyle. Imagine getting yelled at for doing 29 mph instead of 30
The side by side video of plugging in a Tesla vs any of the other cars is hilarious.
Plus a tesla pre conditions the pack for you. Something the "competition" is still trying to work out year's later.
@@AllanSustainabilityFan you get what you vote for tx.
Shoutout to Patrick and Liv for representing the Mach-E gang!
Woop Woop! 💙💙💙⚡
Thanks!!! We're not the "racing" type but this was so much fun. Thanks to Kyle for inviting us! - Patrick
(Rant over)
But in the main, this video and others are excellent - well done 👍
Very entertaining video and educational. Can’t wait for part 2!
I was waiting for the high point, Kyle toasting Alyssa with a salami slice at 1:16:15. Love this trip.
perfect video for getting over boring quarantining! very nice vid
Taycan screen with the map is gorgeous! 🤩
Zero supercharging hassles in the last 5 years
Wow, lots of very specific info! Thanks for the exciting update
Wish we lived in the area and could of joined this race with our ID.4! How much fun it would of been!! Yeah!!
I wish they had an ID.4 in the race. My understanding is it should beat the Mach-E but I would have loved to find out.
The ID.4 charges so slow I think it would be an embarrassing last place
@@markrichards9792 Brand new ID.4 charge 56 kWh in 28 min now.
Kudos to video editor and to participants of "race".
Wondering is that gravity gold ioniq 5?
I would hate having to deal with which chargers are not working, or which payment app to use or swiping credit card etc. The tesla supercharger is so much easier to use. In owning our 2021 Model Y Performance for close to a year, we haven't had any issues using tesla superchargers. Just plug in wait for the green light, then wait
Amazing Race of EV,i like it.
