- The Mordaunt versus Mordaunt Scandal
Chronicle of the Times Episode 37 | 1870
In 1870, a public scandal to beat almost all public scandals of the time developed to the point where the rise of Republicanism - the overthrow of the British Monarchy - was gaining real momentum.
In high society, the case of the public divorce of a husband from his multiple cheating wife was started. One of the potential litigants named was Bertie, or ‘Dirty Bertie’ as the press referred to him: his Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales who would later become King Edward VII. This eccentric Sundays story has scandal, illicit affairs, royalty and insane asylums in the story of Mordaunt versus Mordaunt.
Hosted by Robin Coles.

YIKES!! Poor Harriet!! It takes two to tango, yet it's the woman who gets punished!! On top of that, instead of protecting her, her father insists that she is mentally ill, to protect THEMSELVES and THEIR REPUTATION!! UNBELIEVABLE!!
Charles Mordaunt sounds like a cold, cruel person!! Not only did he evict his agricultural workers for joining the union, but he shot two ponies to get back at his wife and Dirty Bertie?! To be honest, I wouldn't want to be married to him either!!
I do feel sorry for little Violet!! Poor wee mite!!
I'm VERY glad that I wasn't alive during Victorian times!! It was TRULY a man's world then!!
Thanks for sharing this ROYALLY scandalous tale, Robin!! 💕👏💖👍❤💙💞
Thank you - glad you liked! 🤗 Yes, what awful awful people she was surrounded by! Her father's treachery is just incredible. Bertie - apparently a very likable rogue, but a rogue nontheless! Thank you so much for your kind support!🙏
Nothing like a look into the past
People always have two lives, one public one private. Usually quite different.
Imagine living in a society where one would rather be considered insane than admit they had an affair?
The thing that is so very interesting is that everyone knew! It was an open secret and she was not the only person to be known as Bertie's mistress - he got around! She was the infortunate who paid the cost. What does a young girl do in her situation with no support from anyone - family or friends?
Especially in a time when being insane could land you in what’s basically a prison.
You'd think Mordaunt would have kept the whole thing quiet, many others did. Unlikely to win him any favour
Thank you!!!! I LOVE all three of your podcasts!!! Love the history and the personal stories of people from long ago. Most interesting.
Thank you- how kind!! 🙏 Really glad you like the shows!! We have some hard core fans of Vintage Voices, whhc we really enjoy making, but we admit to liking the scandals too!😁
Hi everyone! There is a known youtube issue with comments, so our sincere apologies if you have written and it hasn't come through.😔
Absolutely excellent presentation
How kind! 🤗Thank you - really glad you liked it! 🙏
Oh MY!.. Clutches pearls.. Great job Robin and team.
Thank you! Really glad you liked it! 🙏We think it is a great story representing how very fragile a woman's place could be in Victorian England. 😔
That was fascinating Thank you
Thank you - really glad you liked it! 🙌 Bertie - there are some stories about Bertie that we have in the works. Gosh, was his wife the long suffering one...🤔
Not just her parents' actions (31:20), Chronicler, but Edward's as well.
She was a clear victim - and it certainly does reek of conspiracy. 🤔Poor girl. She was unpopular with the servants at the time who found her "willful". The servents also helped to condemn her, although probably even if they had liked her they would have lied to keep their jobs. A really sad case!😔
And they say Bertie never dropped a lady so hard she bruised? This one had her life destroyed. Shame on all of them, the Prince of Wales included. Poor little Violet
Yes, her story is a tragic one. It is like she is discarded by every man whoever knew her including her father! Thank you - we very much apprecaite your support!🙏
Thanks
Thank you. 🙏
I must say that I thoroughly enjoy your videos!
How very kind! Thank you so much for your kind comment and your support!🙌 Every Sunday, we do a run down of what is comig up on both of our channels. We post this on our News of the Times channel on our community page @newsofthetimes. Thank you so very much again!🙏
This was still the time in history when a woman was more of an object of trade and show and not really allowed to behave in such a scandalous manner. I'm glad it isn't quite as bad as that today.
Us too! 👍Such a tremendously awful position she was in and forsaken by everyone. Quite sad. 😔
Any realation to Penny Mordant the leader of the houseof commons
Afraid we would not know - quite possibly!🤔
Is lord Coles any relation to you Robin?
It would be fab to say yes, but there is no connection known. 😉
It's not rare, it's called postpartum depression & affects 7 out of 10 women after giving birth.
Don't make it sound like it's an "occasional" event.
Heya - quite right!! 👍And we support that completely. That "occassional event" came direct from the papers. We report directly from the papers in all the stories we do - the good, the bad, and the plainly wrong. In this way we feel that listeners such as yourself can better gauge what things were like back then and, how far we have come, or how little we have come. Thank you for bringing this up! 🙌And we agree completely. Actually, we personally think that the father was egging his daughter on to pretend to be insane in roder to avoid a greater scandal on himself and the rest of the family. How horrendous is that? Thank you - appreciate your observation and comment.🙏
We agree completely! 👍Thart quote came directly from the papers - it is not an opinion form ourselves. All of our stories are quoted directly from the papers. In this way we all are better able to understand where we were, and how far or how little we have come. Thank you for your point and observation. Let us hope that at least in this area, the world has changed to one of better understanding.🙏

sorry - our reply is not showing here - we hope it is your end. We have been having some email / comment technical difficulties. Please be assured that we agree with you and that the comment related to this was direct from the papers at the time.
