For sure twisted sick! But that is their "culture". For us in west where Christianity was the religion, there was so much fu**ed up things going on as a whole but then it evolved and became more "human". I can only hope this for other countries with "old" thinking ways.
Im NOT defending any abuse, violence in ANY WAY, NO!! Absolutely NOT! I live in Sweden and even if we now are more "civilized" than hundreds of years ago, there was some extremely bad and even hard to believe things going on, because it's so far fetched from where we're now. Maybe some countries, sadly have a harder and longer road to go for it to become more human.

Isobel Yeung is a brave and intelligent woman as well as being a phenomenal journalist. This story must have been extremely emotional for her (and her crew). We can see the pain on her face and the tears she was holding back as she was rightfully affected by the emotional stories of all these women and children who have been raped.
Not only that but just being there also put her self in danger of the same potential outcome.
Isobel goes where many other journalists won't even think of going and brings us the whole story directly from the mouths of those she interviews. Her own take is a summary of what she learns. I hope we can continue to see her for years to come but I hope even more that she never has to experience any of the horrors she's ever investigating.

Children overcome things easier. I know I did. People just feel that way about children because they feel protective over them. But adults can go through worse trauma as a result because they understand the wider implications and they have fewer supports. Older adults feel just the same way about children being hurt as they do about adults who are their children’s ages. It’s all about the experience you’re going through as an observer, rather than the experiences of individual victims. The only thing I’d say would be worse for a child is if it’s their first sexual experience, which can happen at any age.

As a Congolese young man born in Kinshasa and raised in Belgium, I feel deeply connected to the ongoing struggle in my homeland. The West's insatiable demand for smartphones and other electronic devices directly feeds into the exploitation of the Democratic Republic of Congo's rich mineral resources, turning what should be a national blessing into a devastating curse for its people. The West's involvement is not just about passive consumption; it's an active part of the problem, perpetuating a cycle of dependence and exploitation that seems designed to never let the Congolese people truly be free.
The irony of the situation is heartbreaking. Congo, a nation that once opened its arms to Rwandan refugees during their time of crisis, now finds itself grappling with external and internal forces vying for control over its land and resources. This betrayal is compounded by the complicity of Western powers, whose geopolitical maneuvers have only deepened the wounds of a country already scarred by a history of colonial exploitation.
The pain of witnessing corrupted leaders who trade the nation's future for personal gain is a constant, heavy burden. It's as if the soul of Congo has been repeatedly sold, leaving its people to grapple with a legacy of betrayal that dates back to the atrocities committed under King Leopold of Belgium. The hope that once ignited our hearts with the independence movement and the visionary leadership of Patrice Lumumba has been systematically extinguished. Lumumba, our beacon of hope and justice, was not just a leader; he was the embodiment of Congo's potential, tragically silenced by the very forces that continue to undermine our sovereignty. In the profound words of Malcolm X, Lumumba was "the greatest black man who ever walked the African continent... He had those people so scared they had to kill him." His assassination symbolized the extinguishing of the fiery spirit of resistance and self-determination in our leaders.
Amidst this turmoil, one can't help but wonder if the absence of these vast resources might have spared Congo from this cycle of exploitation and suffering. The constant, underlying anger and frustration stemming from the unending exploitation and injustice are emotions that I, and many others, carry daily. It's a survivor's remorse that accompanies the diaspora as we navigate life away from our motherland, constantly reminded of the immense potential and yet profound suffering of our people.
My greatest hope is for healing - for the land that has nourished us and the spirits that have been broken. The path to reclaiming our dignity and rightful place in the world is fraught with challenges, but it is a journey we must undertake, fueled by the memory of our forebears and the unquenchable desire for a future where the Congo can truly thrive, free from the shadows of exploitation and internal strife.

Funny how you never mentioned anything women specific. As a queer south African womyn I can tell you that lack of women centred thinking won't solve any women specific problems, yes women rights are human rights so when we speak of rights, correct things to do then we will never do right as per women. Go off then on politics that exclude women and see if there's a difference.c
