When I had my son 17 years ago the government (of Canada) changed our OHIP coverage so that I would have had to pay for my son's circumcision which made me think it through a little more and do some research on whether it was actually needed... after I learned the truth I decided not to get him circumsized. Even though I was pressured to follow the "societal norm" by my family I refused to follow our Christian tradition that had no actual benefit. Many people told me why I was wrong, and I told them the facts on why I was right. Only education will help people change their minds, not your anger.

Do you know how much money American hospitals make out of circumcisions? Circumcision amputates about 50% of the penis' erogenous tissue, yet people think it's not a big deal, because it's the norm and it's done in a safe hospital setting (in the west). This is an example of how culture and financial incentives distort people's perceptions, it doesn't mean we don't see each other as human, just we have blind spots. Genital mutilation is super sad, I truly hope all mutilations stop soon.
Sometimes its fear that your daughter will not be marriable and will starve as they have no other way to live. I don't agree with it at all, but lack of education really affects it. It was often the lesser of two evils. Similar to foot binding. I'm glad to see education helping stop these things.

My aunt who lived in Africa ran the local girls group similar to guides. She said the young girls who were so happy would return days later broken and traumatised. It is unimaginable cruelty.

This video was a huge reminder of just how much we take for granted. I have a cousin who was expelled from HS because he kept skipping, refused to do work, etc. All I can think of right now are these girls who'd give anything for what my cousin--and so many like him--effortlessly tossed away.
I feel you. I come from a developing country and I'm so sad to see many of my classmates throwing away their education. They don't realize how crucial the impact of these four years of high school will be on their lives and instead choose to live in the moment worrying about social media and other irrelevant things instead of thinking long term. Kids back in my home country would kill for a free education...transportation. Kids here complain about the quality of their free school lunches and free transportation to school and complain about being forced to attend school but don't realize how lucky they are not to be starving or walking 17 miles to attend school. America is such a great country and I'm grateful to have come to live here...american children need to realize this and take advantage of the resources they've been provided with.

brajamtho757 I believe the intentions behind FGM are perhaps more cruel, but your right the actual act itself is equally terrible for males and females. Either way you are removing someones body part, without their consent, and i think it's wrong. The only thing that bothers me is how the majority of people who are against FGM seem to think it's perfectly acceptable to mutilate little boys. It bothers me that people are less concerned for male children, and refuse to see the harm it does. People argue that it doesn't harm males..which is a straight up lie! i think male circumcision should only be performed if it is a medical necessity. Other than that let the boy grow up, and make his own decision. I generally put more emphasis on discussing male circumcision, as there seems to be a cultural belief that boys benefit from this act of cruelty, whereas most people are already defending the girls. However for this particular video, i was more focused on the intent behind fgm...either way boy or girl, it all sickens me.

brajamtho757 Depending on the area, yes most people think they are helping the girls, but there are also places where they do it, specifically to control the women, and make sure they cannot receive pleasure in sex, and therefore "whore around" So yes most cultures somehow believe they are helping both males and females through circumcision. However with mgm people use hygiene as the number one excuse either that or personal aesthetics, as no one wants to admit to the historical roots that circumcision has in religion. So basically boys are circumcised to stay hygienic, whereas females are circumcised specifically to deny sexual pleasure. I realize the erogenous tissue of men is mostly removed with circumcision, and they to lose sexual stimulation, but boys are not circumcised with the "intent" to remove sexual satisfaction. So even though the end result is the same, no one is trying to deny pleasure in men, though they are trying to deny pleasure in females. that is why i originally stated the difference in intent. Though once again i am saying it is equally wrong to perform circumcision on boys or girls. if an adult chooses to do so, that is their business.

Most of the purposes behind male circumcision i was aware of (hygiene, protection against sexual disease, religious sacrifice, right of passage, aesthetic appearance) Though i came across a piece written on how it was also intended to prevent masturbation, and excessive sex drive. I take it that is what you intended me to find. I was unaware that there was any real intent to prevent pleasure (though that is obviously the end result) Hopefully people are becoming more educated, and do not harm their children, in the way they were most likely harmed. Thanks for the tip, i didn't know about that piece of history.

When I had my son 17 years ago the government (of Canada) changed our OHIP coverage so that I would have had to pay for my son's circumcision which made me think it through a little more and do some research on whether it was actually needed... after I learned the truth I decided not to get him circumsized. Even though I was pressured to follow the "societal norm" by my family I refused to follow our Christian tradition that had no actual benefit. Many people told me why I was wrong, and I told them the facts on why I was right. Only education will help people change their minds, not your anger.

Do you know how much money American hospitals make out of circumcisions? Circumcision amputates about 50% of the penis' erogenous tissue, yet people think it's not a big deal, because it's the norm and it's done in a safe hospital setting (in the west).

Sometimes its fear that your daughter will not be marriable and will starve as they have no other way to live. I don't agree with it at all, but lack of education really affects it. It was often the lesser of two evils. Similar to foot binding. I'm glad to see education helping stop these things.

As an almost victim, I tell you that it's not easy to voice your opinions over your entire ancestry and go against your parents. You might say that you won't be circumcised but that will mean you kiss your community goodbye. Then where will u go? To another village? They will ask u why you left your home and once they find out the reason, well no one helps u

My aunt who lived in Africa ran the local girls group similar to guides. She said the young girls who were so happy would return days later broken and traumatised. It is unimaginable cruelty.

This video was a huge reminder of just how much we take for granted. I have a cousin who was expelled from HS because he kept skipping, refused to do work, etc. All I can think of right now are these girls who'd give anything for what my cousin--and so many like him--effortlessly tossed away.
I feel you. I come from a developing country and I'm so sad to see many of my classmates throwing away their education. They don't realize how crucial the impact of these four years of high school will be on their lives and instead choose to live in the moment worrying about social media and other irrelevant things instead of thinking long term. Kids back in my home country would kill for a free education...transportation. Kids here complain about the quality of their free school lunches and free transportation to school and complain about being forced to attend school but don't realize how lucky they are not to be starving or walking 17 miles to attend school. America is such a great country and I'm grateful to have come to live here...american children need to realize this and take advantage of the resources they've been provided with.

brajamtho757 I believe the intentions behind FGM are perhaps more cruel, but your right the actual act itself is equally terrible for males and females. Either way you are removing someones body part, without their consent, and i think it's wrong. The only thing that bothers me is how the majority of people who are against FGM seem to think it's perfectly acceptable to mutilate little boys. It bothers me that people are less concerned for male children, and refuse to see the harm it does. People argue that it doesn't harm males..which is a straight up lie! i think male circumcision should only be performed if it is a medical necessity. Other than that let the boy grow up, and make his own decision. I generally put more emphasis on discussing male circumcision, as there seems to be a cultural belief that boys benefit from this act of cruelty, whereas most people are already defending the girls. However for this particular video, i was more focused on the intent behind fgm...either way boy or girl, it all sickens me.
brajamtho757 You seem upset with me...This is literally the first post i have ever made speaking about fgm, whereas i have spent over 3 years discussing the harm of mgm...i put more emphasis on males, as they seem to be more neglected on this topic. The only reason i stated the difference in intentions, is that people have a misguided belief that they are helping boys by circumcising them, which needs to be corrected.
brajamtho757 Depending on the area, yes most people think they are helping the girls, but there are also places where they do it, specifically to control the women, and make sure they cannot receive pleasure in sex, and therefore "whore around" So yes most cultures somehow believe they are helping both males and females through circumcision. However with mgm people use hygiene as the number one excuse either that or personal aesthetics, as no one wants to admit to the historical roots that circumcision has in religion. So basically boys are circumcised to stay hygienic, whereas females are circumcised specifically to deny sexual pleasure. I realize the erogenous tissue of men is mostly removed with circumcision, and they to lose sexual stimulation, but boys are not circumcised with the "intent" to remove sexual satisfaction. So even though the end result is the same, no one is trying to deny pleasure in men, though they are trying to deny pleasure in females. that is why i originally stated the difference in intent. Though once again i am saying it is equally wrong to perform circumcision on boys or girls. if an adult chooses to do so, that is their business.

Most of the purposes behind male circumcision i was aware of (hygiene, protection against sexual disease, religious sacrifice, right of passage, aesthetic appearance) Though i came across a piece written on how it was also intended to prevent masturbation, and excessive sex drive. I take it that is what you intended me to find. I was unaware that there was any real intent to prevent pleasure (though that is obviously the end result) Hopefully people are becoming more educated, and do not harm their children, in the way they were most likely harmed. Thanks for the tip, i didn't know about that piece of history.

I'm proud to say that Nancy is a friend of mine. Nancy is now grown up and going further than her Pokot community to help fight cutting of girls. I met her at the UN Women's conference in New York where she spoke fiercely and passionately. She travels and speaks at conferences around the world. Last year she spoke at a seminar in London. She is now educated and speaks fluent English.
"I'm heading to the land of milk and honey." I'm praying she makes it there.
With her attitude, knowledge and conviction? She definitely will! Some way, somehow, she WILL make it happen for herself. :) It's been 8 years since this was uploaded....I'd LOVE to see an update to this, she'd be about 22 now. I have a feeling she's not only gotten her education (or at least, is still working on it), but that she is also now one of those leading the "newer generation" of girls.
