FIRST LOOK: Prodrive P25 - £552k Subaru Impreza 22B Restomod | Top Gear

- Опубліковано 30 чер 2022
- What happens when Prodrive, the British racecar designer and mastermind of three Subaru World Rally Championship titles decides to build the ultimate road-going Impreza rally car? Well, we’ve been for a poke around the company’s workshops to have a look at the answer to that very question: the new Prodrive P25. It’s part restomod, part Impreza 22B homage, and all of Prodrive’s go-fast know-how in one big-winged package. The specification is sensational: over 400bhp, 0-62mph in under 3.5sec, but there’s one number that dwarfs all of that: the price. This is a half-million pound Subaru - can the P25 possibly be worth that much money? Join Top Gear Magazine’s Ollie Kew for deep dive into one of 2022’s most desirable cars.

Awesome car, but at that price absolutely no one will use it for what it was built for
Ye.
Dread to think what it will cost to insure. But if you can afford half a mil to buy the thing, I guess that won't be a problem...
Let's be honest, Travis Pastrana will have one and will be ripping it
Yes, we will
Unfortunately thats the whole point of this car. Prodrive are building this for the investors. The people who have missed out on spending 250k on a 22b
If I had that kind of money for a restomod, it’d be a ‘94 Lancia Delta Integrale. That’s my dream car, right there.
There’s one in the background 😄
037 or a Stratos for me, but I feel ya.
@@Velocitist Nah, too many mods compared to the original Integrale..design looks off to me and the huge wheels are making it look too high on its feet too. I appreciate the project but it's not for me.
100% agreed. 99.999999% of people would think you went crazy, if you explain you spent 0.5M on a Subaru. Nobody would question spending same on Lancia Delta Integrale
Amen to that. My choice too.
What an amazing car, such a shame that none of the people who get them will ever drive them like a proper rally car. Too expensive
Ikr! And who can blame them
Prodrive know what they’re doing but this car somewhat doesn’t make sense… They want a rally car for the road but at that price they will end up garage queens… And for more than Lambo or Ferrari money it does not have.that status amongst common people who haven’t got a clue
@@BrokenEyedVegan It's more than likely that those who bought the Prodrive will own a collection of cars that stroke their ego on public roads. And no doubt owners who couldn't care at all if this Subaru turns heads or not.
I saw one in columbus, OH dude took it through the Taco Bell drive threw
@@aDistantLight true, not sure about them falling apart but
For $665k I expect much more effort, like a carbon chassis, a better interior, improved lighting, and a better 0-60 time than a $45k Golf R. This is just a standard hot Subie with a big price tag.
Youll struggle to beat a DSG Golf R 0-60 in a car with a manual gearbox.
Edit: and thats why you watch the whole video before commenting!
A 22b with 40k km sold for more than $300k last year on bring a trailer. But I agree, more could have been done with that budget and still make a good profit.
Unshitboxing a shitbox is pretty difficult and very expensive. I agree that I don't understand the pricetag even still, but I'm sure they're not just pocketing a few hundred grand.
@@jackp-j1932 for $500k? Even if it was manual it should be able to beat a stock dsg r to 60, they’re not thaaat fast. Now a tuned r would be another story, some of the most built ones can beat a lot of $500k cars…
@@Fastboi69420 Its about 4.5 seconds, isnt it? Thats impressive given its over 1500kg. Im not sure which brand new manual cars can beat that, other than the very track-focused superlightweight caterhams etc
An actual Colin McRae race driven subaru sold at auction for less than this costs 😬
and one collin mcrae 22b sold for around 831k
Did he just say “up front is the turbocharger” and then point at the alternator? 😂🤣
was looking for this comment
Yeah, was that supposed to be a joke? No shot this guy doesn't know what a turbo looks like right?
He also calls the wheels, “rims”
Insanely cool car. But for 500k id rather have a 22b and then id have money left over for a friend to drive an escort cosworth for me to look at.
22b are about the same price and much harder to find, especially one thats gonna run
Me and a mate were having a discussion about these the other day, I know it couldn't happen due to safety and emissions rules but it would be amazing if say Subaru and Mitsubishi built a batch of new "old" Imprezas and Lancers with 2.0 ltr turbos, manual boxes but everything else basic, no A/C no fancy seats etc and sold them cheap, they'd sell loads.
It's possible, but only if they bought registered cars to re-do them. Emissions and safety rules are enforced mostly by build year, so technically the cars would still be old enough to pass those rules.
They would sell like hotcakes. Your right, not entertainment system in the dash, no gps, no electric windows and mirrors- just lightweight, basic fun
@@danielbrealey2924 Not having atleast a simple 1DIN player with Bluetooth would make people crazy, you need the music somehow, and personally I'd still go for AC, but apart from those, less is more
The Subaru Brighton is already like thta just need to do a swap, no power windows, no traction or stability control, but it does have ac and radio but nothing else just car
“Loads”
I remember Colin , Richard burns racing in WrC really golden days to cherish.
I've thought about it extensively and would have to agree, gold mags really make the difference against the blue, so distinctly Sabaru
It'll look much sexier with high profile tyres.
I hate it when people thow huge rims onto these classics.
🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝
That's what the wrc cars looked like in tarmac spec and keep in mind it's got huge brakes as well.
I'm sorry. 500k+ for a Subaru essentially? I am a big restomod fan but this seems a bit too much.
best subaru ever
@@Miskamandariini still too much
@@aceofaces1506 ye
That’s what restomods of classic cars are like. Insanely expensive. It’s not just the 22B.
Right? This did NOT need modifications unlike older 70s, 60s sports car that restomods are more justified for.
Totally underwhelming for that amount of money
Looks stunning. Those wheels look fantastic.
Almost perfect, needs a pink grill badge. Lovely.
It looks gorgeous!! Love the gray wheels as well!! Shame it doesn’t have a manual GB, though... Hope the ones who bought it will give it the full beans for most of the time and race with it now and then, and not let it sit in another collection.
Yeah, lost me at auto.
@@1IRoyle big facts bro SMH i wouldn't waste my money, but u have to understand that most europeans are beta males lol they are basically like women 😂 if it wasn't for us real guys in the USA even porche would've ban all manuals, but real guys wasn't having it tho lol
it's an auto because anyone with the money to buy this will drive it once and then park it in their climate controlled facility. they dont want to manually change gears.

@@pauliewalnuts240 lol 😂
Seeing this makes me gutted that i cant drive but i love it its amazing its a moden 22b
Next time you have to review McMurtry
Growing up there was a lady who use to cut mine and my friends hair her name was Jenny and she had one of these cars. It wasn’t a pro drive model tho but it was a 22b. I always remember looking at it and wanting it so bad. Her Boyfreind explained to me how rare and special the car was and even let me sit in it and rev it outside the barber shop. Years later her own son petrol bombed it and it got written off. Shes passed way now but this car always has reminded me of her. I’m 33 now and this was when I was in my early to mid teens. Man time goes fast.
100% my next project car will be something similar but an Escort Cosworth!! 👌🏼
Full WRC kit
Full cage
Air con
400+bhp
Carpet, headlining, door cards
Blue tooth stereo
Coffee cup holder
Didn’t ask
prius TRD in japan.
No it wont.
Cossies aren't something you can get cheap and rip apart. They're valuable collector cars. You could literally spec a BMW M3 from factory for the price of an actual Escort Cosworth. Anyone modifying one is either a millionaire or an idiot.
Sell 1m euro
It's not a 22b "restomod" it's a brand new WRC Subaru, basically put on your livery time travel back to the 90s and race beside McRae
And remember 22b wasn't a homologation car. 22b was made to look like the wrc car to commemorate their success at wrc
Finally someone who actually gets it. The interview Henry catchpole did makes more sense of what this is.
Well, they did it so they could make rally car wider
Love the 22B. One of the slickest looking cars ever! And the rally heritage ofc omg
I ever used that car in TEST DRIVE 6.
22b never went rallying
For that Money the chassis, every single panel and wheels have to be carbon fiber like the ruf Porsche, swap a billet aluminum 6 cylinder engine and double or triple the horse power, and a Singer style interior
I was in lov with subaru all my life, i had 5 and sold 4, now i hav 1999 Gc8 jus love it
I'm getting the feeling that for 150k plus a clean chassis a dedicated Subie tuning shop could get you about 90 percent there with what's out there on the market today. I'm sure the fit and finish is amazing on this car and prob the best built Subie for the street. For turn key and Prodrive attached to this vehicle a premium is justified.
Agreed. This is ground up built too, every redesigned. People are scoffing at the price as if they could even afford it at £100k. For 25 units I think they could have doubled the price and still sold out. Stops the instant resellers too that are looking a quick buck. Happens even with larger production sports cars, look at Porsches, Corvettes, Ford GTs when they get a new model, resellers instantly add more and sell on.
I would argue that with 150k you could even surpass this Prodrive car on all fronts. Total rip off.
The fit and finish of the car is absolutely unacceptable for the price. I hope it's just the prototype and the customer cars are better. But sagging doors, shit panelgaps, rear bench that doesn't fit properly and other interior trim pieces not fitting is just not done when asking this type of money.
the most expensive part is finding a 2 door shell.. all the rest is chump change
Very nice. I believe I would prefer a genuine 22B.
Love this video. I'd rather have an 037 but certainly wouldn't turn this down. Also, congratulations to the presenter for achieving the world record of how many times someone can say "proper" in a video. Kudos.
Awesome to see an Aussie v8 supercar in there too @1:04
The detail and expertise and pedigree that went into the development of this car is truly something unique. You can’t compare to Singer, or Alfaholics, this car is entirely different and is well worth the price tag for something this rare (Subaru-wise) Shame we’ll never see the anti lag or boost functions being used. I hope whoever owns these cars, actually thrashes them around and unlocks their potential. Incredible car.
it's 1.6 million buddy and it's not even worth a tenth of that.
@@swansmeister it"s a rally car for the road, what do you expect? This not for casual driver, this is was made for the racing driver
@@adelinogoncalves1180 Ok casual.
@@swansmeister nah, they’re right
Uh, yeah take 400k off that price and it makes sense lol This build is actually quite basic to be honest
You say to be honest as if you’d lie about it.. before you start crying. It was a joke
This is just a beautiful piece of machinery
my first car was a coupe 2.5 RS and I miss that car dearly
Lol ummmmm,,, we were doing this ourselves about 20 years ago, and to the coswoth about 30 years ago, 500+ bhp, I wonder if they know this is not enough,,, this is a £20k car mate
OOF, that dig at Suabru. It's true though, they have totally forgotten what made the brand great, specifically Subaru UK/Europe. This is the greatest Subaru we've had in years and it's not even from Subaru.
Subaru still competes in rally.
@@mikeylikesit2675 not in the wrc
This is perfect in every single way!! my heart broke when he said its not a manual. what a dream killer. I Love feeling connected to the drive with manual. I have driven so many autos at my work and it is just terrible.
Wish they'd updated the lights front and rear, just a little, with some clear glass elements or something more expensive looking to make it identifiable as the P25 from a bit of a distance. Always loved this model Impreza 🤌
Yeah was thinking that too,and also that one gear shift panel is definitely gonna catch someone,if they're not ready, lol
I'd like to think that if Colin McRae was still with us, he'd have been gifted the first one to be built.
He may have only been a driver, but he is *the* reason why the car has its reputation
Couldn’t agree more. He’s the reason I own a Subaru.
Shame he killed his son and his mate with any insurance. I can't forgive that even for a godlike talent like him.
@@anthonyasquith1121 source?
As with the Redux/Retropower E30 M3, I can appreciate the expertise that's gone into building it, but half a million is astronomical. Double the price of a 700hp Porsche 911 GT2 RS? Nah. You'd have to be one hell of a fan of the Impreza to part with that kind of money.
And that’s exactly who this car is for. The mega fans who know the deal with this car and the people who built it.
Beautiful car and I am glad.
Subaru lives on from victories of the past.
I like this guy, lots of originality
Stunning car, love the wheels
It needs the gold wheels, needs a manual box or at least a double paddle sequential instead of the single(crazy idea) and even if I had the money I would prefer to wait until a real 22B became available so I could buy it 200 grand cheaper than that thing. Oh it also needs blue bucket seats its a really cool car an all but just not half a million quid cool .
wow that shifter is very nice for an older car. These restomods are insane.
Hopefully, the only way to get a glimpse of its capabilities will be through one of your test drives. ASAP, please. Simply, beautiful.
It's a shame they will sit in storage like fine art ready to be sold in the future.
If u think about how a mint stock 22b has sold for over 300k. The price is somewhat justified. 😓
i really want of those 22b
absolutely stunning. cheers to prodrive.
Properly under-decorated for an overpriced retro job.
Prodrive wins rallies, theyre not a decoration company
@@bingoberra18 All I'm saying is this car ain't got all the bits to commandeer a rally machine's price, and is too primitive to commandeer a Singer price.
Of course, central banks of this world make sure there are willing buyers
@@kalasend I think the margin Prodrive has on these cars are much lower than anyone thinks. Just because something looks simple doesnt mean it didnt take engineers 100h to get to a design freeze of that part. And an engineer is probably £70/h, now you have 2D drawings and a 3D model of a part and its costed £7000 before youve even sourced the raw material, never mind produced it and tested it. Most of the cost of this project would be engineering man hours. And that is how a real engineering company works, and what sets it apart from Joe´s Tunershop. Now if I am a millionare I know which car I want to spend money on.
552k? What the hell? I love restomods and I have a weak spot for the '555' Impreza, but this is ridiculous...
Nice car though 😉
Couldn’t of worded it better myself 👌🏻
If you think a restomod is more desirable than a new, seriously fast car custom-built by Prodrive, well, Jay Leno is only a few mouse clicks away.
Wish you would have mentioned the higher cut fenders, mimicking the WRC car, rather than the smaller fender cutouts of the 22B. For me, it was the one design detail I was really hoping for, and I'm glad they did it!
Exactly my thoughts. Thanks. I would have liked a single exhaust pipe, too.
@@selcukcilek555 If I had the money and clout to have bought one, I would have had mine developed and built with an unequal length header. I just prefer that sound on my scoobs. I'll give up some HP for that sound! 😆
So are have Prodrive taken an existing chassis and built the new car over it or is it a brand new bespoke chassis? And the engine have they rebuilt an old engine or completely cast new engine blocks?
For that money……..I’ll take a new 911 GT3RS and have loads of money left.
Someone must be out of their mind to pay 500k for a 4 cylinder subie 🤯
Just hold your laughing until somebody offers the original buy 1 million to buy it. The people that are buying this car are not out of their mind, they are much smarter than you and I.
@@neilmcmahon nobody is going to pay 1mil for it. its just a custom subie, it will most likely lost atleast half its value in a few years. you could litterally buy 2 22b's which will actually go up in price since they are real collectible cars not just a custom made car.
Interesting to see Glen Seton's Ford Falcon racecar in the background there!
9:37 great car review. he almost sounds like tiff needell sounded like when he first did car reviews.
For everyone complaining about the price, understand that you’re paying for the rarity, not the power figures. This is what happens to collectibles.
It's still not worth it. You can get alot of other, better collectables for £500k!
The 22B is a rarity and a collectable. Not his remake.
Not to mention the cost of R&D needed to make sure it will work like a new car unlike some of those self build project under 100k.
Well just geta real one then for a fraction of the price and with a manual. The price makes no sense hence the short video, but with it being sold out it proves that people will buy anything.
@@lwenbmw4152 What R&D? There's nothing on this car that Prodrive haven't used before, it's all proven technology. This is just a money grab by Prodrive, the only research they will have done is to ensure there are buyers willing to pay that kind of money, hence they are all pre sold
I understand its built by prodrive, its got carbon body work etc etc. Despite the astronomical cost, its still a compromise. Doesn't seem that it would do anything better than a modded STI. When you buy a singer Porsche, I get it, youre paying for insane attention to detail but I just dont see the nearly 700k USD in this car. Prodrive is laughing all the way to the bank!
I ever used this Impreza 22B STi on both TEST DRIVE 6 and Gran Turismo 2. 👍
ALMOST drooling. Prolly won't ever have the experience to drive one of these beautys but Putting it in gear/1st and just reving her and listening to here purrr a few times then letting her GOOOOOO. Pull me back in the seat and holding on and taming her raw power. Hearing that boxer engine just Brapppp... think Subbie is missing on that manual stimulation that we all love as rex/sti drivers. I don't want her to do it herself she needs a good hand to steer her in the right direction!
I had a 400 wheel hp mk1 scooby back in 05,
He Didnt mention the 10mpg strangely 🤔
And mine was a 2 litre
I'd rather get a new GR Yaris and drop 20K on mods and save half a million 🙄 it'll be quicker too....
With these kinda prices at least the block should be billet and exterior carbon.
🧂
Prodrive wont do things that doesnt make sense just because it looks cool. At this power level there are better places to spend money which is what they have done. It is expensive enough already.
@@bingoberra18 At this price point everything that can be done should be done. Half a million for Subaru?! That doesn't make sense at all. Billet not only makes it stronger, but also lighter. And the weight saving with a carbon exterior is probably 100kg. Driveshafts should be carbon too. Wheels should be custom. Suspension should be Exe-Tc, Öhlins TTX, JRZ or the like. And a manual! If your really concerned about about loosing a few tenths or even seconds while shifting then this car is not for you. There's plenty faster cars out there. Especially at this price.

@@jasonkillsformomy I´m not saying it is according to "my spec" either. But this price is the price that Prodrive, a motorsport company, needed to charge in order to build a run of 25 newly built cars with many special and custom parts, developed by actual professional engineers and putting it all together into an OEM kind of reliability and driveability way. I agree that any tuning company could build a sick impreza for 1/4 of this price. But those tuning companies do not work engineeringwise like Prodrive. I work in a OEM and I know what lengths a company goes to when it comes to testing and validation, compared to any tuning company who needs to keep the cost down in order to even have a business. There is no time for research and development in a shop like that, they just order, bolt on parts, and tune. If they need to fab something, it is not engineered and simulated, its just fabbed up and slapped on. If it breaks there is no spare parts. etc etc etc. This is Prodrive, its a whole other ballgame from a tuner car.
A great video because of you Ollie.
For those of you saying that it’s too “expensive”, this thing was just unveiled at the Thailand Motor Expo and with over 300% import tax this beast costs over 1.8 million USD here.
More of a road going 97 WRC than a 22B
That's why I'm shocked with all these people complaining about the price when it's the closest thing to a wrc car ever put on the road.
I could build this myself and it will still cost me less than 100K
You could theoretically build it, but it wouldn't be as polished as this is. It's not just parts you're buying it's also R&D.
Thats funny
Does anyone know if they'll make it in left hand drive or not?
Love the video, this car is a brilliant nostalgia nod! Only prob, not a 3 door (3:20)
Yeah, I thought that too🤔....he cocked up😳.... it's 2 door + boot!🤣👍😁
The issue with restomods is that there’s no real way to regulate the prices the modders charge. There’s no value here, at all. Not at that price. You’d probably have just as much fun in a GR Yaris.
The price is set by the buyers, if no one would buy it then prodrive would have to drop the price. Anyone can build that car for less than 100k but there are people out there with too much money willing to spend half a million in a 30 year old Subaru.
What nonsense, you could literally buy an original 22B for around half and have it completely refurbed. Or find a clean Hawkeye shell and have it built out by a top tier shop like say Vermont sportscar for wildly less money. Either is a substantially better option than this very confused and hilariously overpriced oddity.
If you're a true masochist Vermont sportscar sells off their former rally cars and you could have one of those street legalized with a custom interior! You'd have the experience of an actual rally car on the street right down to the ever present whine of straight cut gears in the rally dog box.
Why don't you do it then ?
Incredible! If I were absurdly rich, a 22B is definitely one of the cars I would want to buy.

if they are anything like Singer who makes modern retro Porsches, this 22b will be the best
You could build this car 4 times over for that kind of money. People have been popping sequential gearboxes in subies for years now.
Pro Drive trying to match original 22B price at the market.. so with that I think most prospective buyers will rarely use this on road and more as an investment.
Great car though and those 19' gun metal wheels I prefer over a gold one.
Also don't mind the no manual gearshift but just pull-push one paddle, left and right paddle shift has more natural feel.

Back in 2000 l bought a nearly new Evo 6 from Warrender in Bolton. Before buying it I test drove both the Evo 6 and a Subaru 22B they had for sale for comparison. At that time they were both on sale for around £25k. For me the Subaru made a better noise but the Evo was a much more exciting and rewarding car to drive all round. Residual values weren’t of interest, it was just about how the car felt., and the Evo 6 won. 23 years later it’s amazing how much people are prepared to pay for this era of rally replicas. If you’re in the market, I guess the rarity of a 22B makes it stand out. But from my experience….save yourself a load of money …the Evo 6 is a better car.
One of the original GC8 22B is currently for sale in Germany or the Netherlands (can't remember where exactly) for 340.000,-+ Euro.^^
Thinking back 10 to 15 years even a 22B you could find for around 40 -50k € (like f.ex. R34 GT-Rs ect.) for sale in Japan. The rise in prices sometimes comes crasy to me but for those
small series build types in special becomeing even more rare (because of you know... crashes, types of 'ricey tuning' of some kind and so on xD) by time, it somehow makes sence... :P
Forgot 1 came to New Zealand too
There’s 3 22B that’s for sale at the moment, since the P25 are all sold out
If in doubt, flat out.
