Driving the Kimera EVO37: The Group B Restomod | Henry Catchpole - The Driver’s Seat
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 кві 2023
- Henry Catchpole is a rallying fan through and through, so driving and reviewing Kimera’s rally-inspired restomod, based on the legendary Group B Lancia 037, is a pretty good day in the office for him. Throw in some amazing mountain roads, a race track and the odd Martini livery and you have all the ingredients for something truly memorable
The Kimera EVO37 is the brainchild of Luca Betti and it combines the looks and layout of the 037 with an engine that takes inspiration from the Lancia Delta S4. The amazing little 2.1-litre four cylinder engine that sits behind the driver is both supercharged and turbocharged. It has been engineered by Italtecnica in Turin and in its most powerful map puts out 505bhp and 442lb ft of torque. That’s pretty wild in a car that weighs less than 1100kg or 2400lb.
As with most restomods, like those from Singer, Alfaholics and Eagle, the Kimera is a very analogue driving experience. To that end, there is a manual six-speed gearbox from Graziano, which has also featured in the Lamborghini Gallardo and Audi R8 over the years. What differentiates the EVO37 from other restomods is its very distinct rally persona. You can see this in the twin Ohlins dampers at the rear, but you can feel it straight away on the move through the steering and the way it soaks up bumps and tackles corners.
In the film we cover a lot of ground, starting at the beautiful Villa Kimera just outside Cuneo in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. Here we interview Luca Betti and discover the genesis of both the company name and the EVO37. Then we head to the beautiful Colle della Maddalena and its profusion of spectacular hairpins to drive the car on the road. Then it’s off to Turin for a visit to Italtecnica where the engine is built, before we pop over to Martini for a look at the latest, limited edition Kimera. Finally we stop off at a fun little race track to drive Kimera’s development car with shorter gearing and more power.
We hope you enjoy the film and Glenn Winhall’s superb editing and filming (aided on this occasion by Nick Wilkinson). Please do give it a thumbs up and share it with anyone else who you think might enjoy it - it really helps us to keep making content like this on the Hagerty channel.

If I had the money, I would definitely pick this over pretty much any production supercar
I would buy a modern supercar, wait 2-3 years, sell the supercar at a great profit, buy this and have money for upkeep.
@@Q-nt-Tf if you can find a seller you mean. allocation is no joek
My only issue with the car is that lack of money issue too. 👍
Over a 992 911 gt3 touring ?
Two cars for me.. The Kimera EVO37 and the GMA T.33.. One has Rally genes distilled dowb to a road car, the other has F1 genes to distilled down to a road car (everyone wants the T.50 Fancar, but the lower tier T.33 fits my aesthetic better)..
Hagerty has assembled the absolute dream team of car journalists. Camissa, Pobst, AND Catchpole!
Driving the modern Stradale?!
Camissa can be replaced.
Camissa is an odd one, I read somewhere he does drag queen events.
Ok and? He still is a good presenter and makes his Videos entertaining. What he does in his free time shouldn’t matter at all and if he’s not harming you with what he’s doing it should be not of your concern.
@@ksm1985 who cares , except you .....stop being distracted by fake news ....u will free yourself from that ego driven life
@@krusher74 cammisa's ability to make easily digestible, historically interesting, and genuinely fun videos is unmatched IMO.
The car was impressive, but everything else about this video was equally impressive. The cinematography is excellent and stood out even more than your typical high quality videos.
Did you like the chemtrailed and geoengineered skies too?
@@jimbojones101 What on earth has that got to do with a rally cars and a comment about cinematography?
Yes an excellent episode throughout 👍
I found the crossover from the Supercharger to Turbocharger volumetric curve optimisation (on this map at 4,200rpm) absolutely fascinating. - I’m sure one of the problems that this company suffers regularly is Ferrari F1 trying to poach their engineers!! 😊👌”fantastico” …
Well done Henry, this is exactly what we love you doing. 👍
that is absolutely art on wheels.
I've been following and enjoying Henry's work since his EVO days and I've come to this conclusion: he's a lucky bugger, isn't he... 😆
To be fair he does make consummate motoring films.
The man knows what he's doing. 👍
I love the casual comparison to drifting an f40 without even thinking about it. Not a great deal of people I'm sufficiently jealous of, but Henry I certainly am
well yeah that was already apparent from the f1-vs-p1 video
He has a genuine way of describing a car that people are willing to pay him for. A perk is he gets to drive some incredible cars.
Insanely beautiful car. It has left me speechless.
I have been following this car for a few years now. It is my dream car and I don’t think anything else will change that.
Its a car for men who still have hair on their nuts , and they're wives cough up hair balls .
@@5thelementcannabisproduction Also only for men that own a social media platform it seems. I doubt anyone commenting here could afford one without selling their house.
@@armoredp whoa whoa buddy .. Not the house . We still have kids worth selling , whatever happened to that Epstein fella? I heard he pays for kids by the pound ..
That has to be one of the most beautiful cars ive ever seen.
Perfection, they looked good when they were released, this takes it to another level.
So obsessed with this thing. It looks and sounds like nothing else
It also shows you don't need a huge engine to give more than enough power. 2.2l twin charged engine is and absolute monster. There is a reason that v12/v10(and soon v8s) are gonna die. They where perfect before the modern tech made a smaller boosted engine more efficient and more powerful. The engine in the Gr yaris is a prime example. A crazy powerful turbo 3 cylinder that has as much grunt as a NA v8 from not so long ago while burning 1/2 the fuel.
@@rhyswilliams4893thanks to f1 technology
@@PosyaKisa true. Tbf f1 started with tiny engines(by racing standards) 1.5l NA engines. Then Enzo came along with his 'there no replacement for displacement' mentality. Its clearly not true because all of the most powerfully engines ever in f1 have been 2l or below and forced induction. The 2l BMW could hit 1000hp(1350 if some stories are to believed) and a 2020 hybrid engine can hit 1000hp and run for 2500+ miles at 65% thermal efficiency and doing 6mpg.
Incredible work of engineering at an incredible price. Films like these are the only time we will see and hear this beautiful machine.
Idk mate, 480k € sounds pretty much to me...
@@alexandersavic6885 its certainly expensive but for such a unique car I would say its worth it. I would buy it instead of any other super/hypercar
@@alexandersavic6885compare what you get with the kimera for half a mil to what you get for a 3 mil hypercar, a huayra for example, this is a great deal
I wish to make three points:
First, bravo Henry, you are without a doubt one of the very best at what you do both in the content and the cinematography.
Second, OMG what a jaw droppingly exquisite car! And in the Martini livery at the end…. absolutely epic!
Third, very impressed with the Italian dude’s beard 😀
Yep, more italian than linguini :D
Es la barba del Tridente 🔱 !!!

This literally brought a tear to my eye. As a young lad I watch Group B rallies over and over and again on vhs. It was like a drug , I couldn't even blink in case I missed a split second of the action. The sound of the 037 was just skin tingling insanity. The fact these guys have brought back my childhood memories in the dedicated way they have is emotional for me. I just wished I could hug them or at least shake their hands. Thanks Kimera team and thanks Henry. Words can't describe this feeling, nothing holds a candle to 1980's Motorsport. Lost forever now but never ever forgotten.
Totally agree. I expressed similar sentiments elsewhere… The sound of this 037 immediately took me back. Awesome, just awesome.
Maybe it's a sign of the times that I look at this thing and think "Half a million? What a bargain!". When I look around at the sea of mundane automated supercars chasing pointless performance numbers at the expense of the experience it's cars like this and the things coming out of GMA which haven't forgotten where the joy of driving really stems from that keep my enthusiast flame lit.
You can see he is still genuinely excited about driving.... this what great cars need.
This has got to be one of the sexiest cars ever built. Right I there with the f40. I’m a sucker for late 80s and early 90s styling and this is a winner. They power train in this also would be an absolute blast to drive. A complete edge of your seat drive through and through.
as an old rally fan i've got goosebumps. this car is a dream.
Love that Henry gets to keep making films his way, but now with Hagerty. These pieces are always a joy to watch and listen to. And this car is just so *right*.
The impressive cars aside...look at the garage !!! I just love the simple, tasteful, subtle (not flashy and crazy lightings and flooring!).... just simply stylish with substance.
I'm a simple man. I see a new Catchpole video? I watch it
Lancia. One of automotive history's underrated brands.
More like forgotten, but true.
I dont think ive been this struck in awe by a car since i was a kid. This thing is absolute perfection.
The world needs more cars like this and singer
It is so absolutely gorgeous!!!!!! My heart stopped just seeing that beautiful green color and that sound!
That Martini 7 is stunning!
Henry, you're an absolutely great presenter. You've done an amazing job at this. Really great video, everyone!!
This is the most beautiful thing I've ever laid my eyes on. It's like a Ferrari 288GTO shrunk down, with rally spice sprinkled over the top.
Simply put, this is the most beautiful car I have ever seen.
That's not just a car,
It is pure art!
My God. Look at it! Just look at it!! Piece of art through and through..
What a project. Luca Betti seems awesome. Very passionate.
Arguably the most beautiful (new)car I’ve ever seen so far.
This car is insanely beautiful, that last one at the end is especially epic, I know I will never get to drive one but I am glad someone is making them!
I'm a huge Lancia fan, and the 037 one of my childhood icons. I would have this quicker than I would food to eat! The Martini 7 version, or their test car, even more!
I love it. So glad to see it has a manual transmission. Now, If only I had the money. Thank you.
That is the most stunning automobile I’ve ever laid eyes on
18:47 oh my GOD, this is beyond beautiful, what an amazing looking machine and what a great homage
Saw this a couple of years ago at FOS, had a chat with the guys on the stand about the car and the European final , which we lost a few hours later, a way its stunning, congratulations to all those involved 👍
I love that steering wheel! No buttons, no dials, not even a horn❤
This is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen.
Wow. The sounds of the cars are like music. Styling is out of this world. Love it
If there is a god, I humbly thank him for Lancia people (designers, engineers) to be born. Generations later, their creations are still fascinating people like the restomod guy, Henry and even me.
the fact that i live like 20 min from Villa Kimera and that i drive on th Maddalena Pass like every time i want make me enjoy this even more
What a car and what a story! Just absolutely brilliant. It is beauty and perfection in one peace. WOW!
This looks absolutely stunning! Particularly in that green and gold spec 😮
Stunning car, Henry and his team nailed another eloquent and superbly shot and edited review. The price is insane in a good way, £450? Compared to the price of Prodrive 22B themed restomod its a bargain.
I so love this car, and Catchpole is such a good car journo!
JUST WOW! At least someone can fulfill his dreams... what a guy and what a film! Bravo!
I don't have the vocabulary to express my feelings about this car, and the quality of the production from Henry and the crew. My jaw literally dropped when he rolled out the martini livery 037. Just speechless.
Henry continues to be in a league of his own 🔥
(19:28) The cinematography this episode was fantastic.
That Martini livery on the Evo in the last part of this video, screamed, get me one! ❤
This is the best motivational video ever 😆 I'm gonna work even harder, because I NEED one of these 😁
I just wanted to thank you for this. I can only imagine how much work and effort it takes and I know that economically you could be better off doing things differently. Thanks again for your dedication
Italian makers, British presenters.
All is well in the world for 20 minuites
Thanks guys, fantastic work 🤝
thank you! thank you! i cant believe we are watching this for free!
That 07 special at the end with the blue interior and white wheels does it for me. If only I were so lucky, I'd be driving that everywhere.
1000%. I never thought I would want anything more than a Singer, I was wrong.
Rally + Catchpole = Chef’s Kiss! Amazing production quality as always! 👌
Omg that Martini spec is so beautiful!!
The 037 is stunning even if it's 40 y old, this one is perfection.. most beautiful car ever made.
Really nicely done. The car is gorgeous, the video is beautifully shot and edited, and Luca's goatee having winglets for downforce...amazing! That car, in that color, in that landscape is probably the most desirable automobile combo I've ever seen.
When I saw the Martini version of the EVO37, I actually cried. It is a perfect successor to the Lancia 037. I think it just replaced the Delta as the ultimate dream car.
18:48 OMG! That is simply perfection for the eyes. These cars are
utterly tantalizing. The cinematography was Amazing as always. Really enjoyed the trip. Thks
Choosing this car for a clip says everything about the guy, who did it!
Great work, great taste!
Kimera EVO037, MAT Stratos and RUF CTR Anniversary are possibly the most beautiful cars today and curiously both pay homage to cars from more than 30 years ago. Has the pinnacle of design been reached a long time ago?
add the Project Tornado to that list, along with the Emilia GT Veloce/Totem GT Super and the Cyan P1800, and finally the Giulia SWB Zagato
In relation to beauty and individuality, indeed.
And the Maturo Stradale!!
DLS !
I've been wondering how long it was going to take for automotive media to catch wind of this car. Its absolutely badass.
These special littel videos just made youtube so great. well done!! Great channel .... What an absolutly beautifull car.
I am penniless. If I were rich, I would buy this one.
Lancia 037 was one of my favourites when I was a child !
Congratulations, Kimera EVO37 is a very beautiful gemstone
Always loved damn near all Lancia but the O37 has always been a personal favourite of mine and this thing is just a work of art. Got my lucky dip on the lottery tonight 🤞
Thank you Hagerty and Henry. This is a great car with a wonderful competition back catalogue (very well done Mr Betti and your partners).
Hopefully Stellantis will resuscitate Lancia properly (Mr Carlos Tavares, you are needed in Italy!).
There is also an massive message here for the firms still producing vanity sized cars:
(a) if you are not under or close to 1000kg (take a bow Alpine, Gordon Murray and the better 964 custom jobs), then go back to school ASAP.
(b) do you really think that a warmed up people carrier will ever be a classic car ?
When a Lotus, Porsche or Ferrari weighs as much as a fully kitted XJ6 then something is very, very wrong.
Henry, rally car, alpine roads. Perfect.
What a beautiful collection of cars in this video - they're fabulous!
Oh god, the sound! What an unbelievable sound. Thanks Henry. So when you finished the run were the brakes smoking?
We need to see Camisa in this thing
An icons video on would be awesome
@@fordcent swear
Camisa in the kimera does have a nice ring to it..
I think Hyphen drove it... I know the two of them talked about it on their podcast
His co-host from the carmudgeon Derek Tam-Scott has a video on it and they even had a podcast discussing it
Am I the only one, who is always imagining the Lancia Stradale to be a longer car, than it actually is? I'm always surprised, when the car suddenly ends, the front view somehow indicates to me, that the car will be longer. It's a beauty, though. This restomod too! Gorgeous. Really great content.
Thank you Mr. Catchpole, really really thank you!!
There are less than a handful of ultimate drives for me, the Kimera is at the top of that very short list.
3rd comment, WOW OH WOW CAR DESIGNERS NEED TO MAKE STUFF LIKE THIS!!
Never have been a lancia fan but this thing is amazing. Incredible work.
This Has to be my new favourite car ever🎉❤
This is what people want, not self driving electric cars.
and who is this "people" you're referring to lol. As much as I am your similar kind of car enthusiast I'm not under any stupid illusion that we represent the majority.
@@wiryantirta the majority doesn't matter.
Ditch the beard style, it's creepy at best.
What a beautiful machine! The yellow halo headlight provides the perfect accent to the green body color.
man, when he talks about sliding and control he got so excited! that is all you nee to know that this car its just a dream to drive.
Excellent Henry. Real journalism.
Love the yellow headlights with the circular accent around them. Awesome car.
The sound! You can hear the supercharger and turbocharger so clearly. It is mesmerising.
this is the nicest looking car i ever seen in my entire life all of it its just so freaking beautiful.
Great video, it's great when the journalist so clearly loves the car. Like Harry M with that 4.0GTS.
100000000% perfection. Absolutely perfect
This is the most animated I’ve seen this presenter. Was testing him, what a car! So many of us will never truly experience the absolute pure explosive driving mastery it took to command the beasts that were Group B Rally Cars. Mr villain beard has afforded the very lucky few the opportunity to experience the next generation of power, control and glory of the golden age of rally sport.
Simply beautiful!!!!! Wow what a vehicle and thank you for the history/background on this fantastic machine!!!
I have a lot of time for these classic restomods. So much more interesting, and pertinent in today's driving environment, than a new supercar. Hurrah ! ❤
I’ve loved this car ever since I found out about it months ago, I’m glad we’re getting to see it covered by such talented presenters!
OMG! That Martini liveried car has got to be the absolute peak of automotive cool ! My lotto dream garage now has a new occupant!
THANK YOU Hagerty and Henry for creating this. It is without doubt at the very top of my Wish List. Simply perfect in every way. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thank you, Henry, for another great review of what is already a legend. I've seen every video of this car's journey. Absolutely phenomenal. But when I saw the Martini version, it literarily took my breath away. I had to immediately rewind to get another shot of dopamine from that in-your-face entrance. My god...
So good to see you back Henry. Was starting to wonder what you were doing after the last venture. Glad to see you back and what a team you all make. I'm subscribed and looking forward to many more episodes. Love this 037 Restomod you're a lucky so and so!
Loved this car from the moment I first saw one. Just fantastic in every way
Such a flavorful engine profile, what a gorgeous reimagining. Group B for Best.
